Idea: Glamour Catalog

Once we obtain a new unique-untradable gear, it will be added to our personal Glamour Catalog so we can glamour everything we used to own, without having to carry them around or keeping it somewhere in our limited inventory & retainer spaces, even if we lost the gear, it will be in the catalog forever.

That would be soo nice :o
It would hurt the market if you were able to put it into the catalouge without binding it, so I'd be fine with that. If I can't resell it, that's okay. Just no more carrying hundreds and hundreds of outfit pieces around.

The idea is nice, mind you, I would be for it but it's just too big of a step from what we have been doing thus far.

Not only that, You could just farm every piece of gear from every dungeon, and never have to do it again(bad). That's not very MMO at all, grinding is pretty fun and time consuming.

Realistically, how often do people redo content AFTER they already got the gear they like but maybe threw it away months later? How often does such a situation actually happen? How often do people actually throw away gear they spend so much time on obtaining on?
We grind to get it once (which takes ages and hundreds of runs anyway until you have full sets), then we usually put it on a retainer and store 175 pieces of clothing there per retainer, so we can glamour freely. All the catalouge would do is free up that space.
The catalgoue is solely for glamours. It's not like the actual gear is in there - meaning if you start leveling a new class, you still need to gather any gear you want to wear again.

I like the Idea.
Glamour shouldn't waste any normal inventory slot.

My guess is they are going to make attach this feature to the retainer or make it a inn/housing feature. They may have issues with it being directly attached to our character (or however the excuse goes).

They could design also it so we need to use a glamour prism to register pieces to the Log. That way the piece would be bound to the user once it is registered (no selling it back once used). I'd imagine that would give the economy a temporary boost too, and give a use for all of those lvl 52-60 crafted gear pieces.

and while we're on the topic of glamours, when are they going to ease up on the glamour restrictions?

This could also actually increase the gil spent on glamor overall. If I had access to every gear I owned to glamor at a click of a button, I would be pretty much inclined to change my glamor more often = creating or buying more glamor catalysts. Other than having to figure out which retainer I stored it in...

Yoshi touched on this a while back and agrees that it would be a nice feature, but with how often game saves char data, it would add a fair bit of data to each character as to what they've unlocked and haven't. He did say however that if need be, they may save the data on client side, but then that also runs into issues for ps3/4 players since their save data can only be so large.

You get my Like! This would allow me to desynth all that stuff clogging my Armory that's too great a glam to get rid of.

The real reason this won't happen is because more retainers = more profit for SE. Memory wise it's not an issue especially considering client side storage.

Honest question here - how different can the character data usage be if people are storing 100 physical items in their retainers vs. storing 100 images of glamoured gear?

Sure players could 'collect all and be done with the dungeon' but I think people would actually play the low level dungeons more if they could actually get to keep the gear in a glamour catalog.

With how the game currently is, I rarely bother to do a dungeon more than I have to (once for story and a few runs for EXP), which is a lot less then the amount of runs it would take to collect each piece of gear from that dungeon.

I know I often don't even bother playing sometimes because I've had no choice but to throw away so much I have worked for because of inventory limits... :(

Well, considering it wouldn't be either/or, it would be more ^^; Just because they shoved all their retainer-hogging glamour gear into the glamour log it doesn't mean they won't use the freed-up inventory space. It'd just mean they'd store something else in those slots instead -- gear they intend to use while levelling classes/jobs, crafting ingredients, non-key key items (like atma stones, zodiac glass, air current compass, gear upgrade items, beast tribe items for unfinished beast tribes, etc), non-currency currencies (tokens, oaknots), etc.

Of course, a lot of people who currently employ all 8 possible retainers merely to store glamour items would be able to stop renting a few of those... which is also probably something SE would be against *rolls eyes* Something that's highly reasonable, as they are a business trying to earn money/revenue, but still very annoying.

All that said, I'm very much for the introduction of some sort of glamour log -- or the possibility to store more kinds of items in the armoire. The latter would provide the same possible storage ease-up, since the armoire as far as I know only saves the item ID to the list of what stuff is there, instead of the whole array of item ID, dye, condition, spiritbond and materia that has to be saved for inventory slot items.

Aaahh, that all makes perfect sense. Thank you for spelling that one out :) My simple mind was thinking of only the gear itself, swapping the physical for a glamour image, didn't take into account all of the other bits.

Also, to the point of storing glamour data versus storing item data. I don't code, but I would think it would drastically decrease the overall amount of data stored per character. With real items, they have to store soulbound status, damage, materia, dye, etc. Make it a simple glamour log entry and it would just be YES or NO to whether a character has access to a piece of gear to glamour.

Heck, I would be okay with cutting back on retainer / inventory tabs if it meant I had a glamour catalog on the summoning bell (or even the aesthetician bell!) just because I quite literally have a retainer filled to the max with two things: glamour and materia. I wouldn't stop paying for that extra retainer, because I like the ventures. I would just cram it full of crafting materials, or even BAIT for that fishing job I barely touch...

I support this, but it's probably the 10th thread I've seen and supported with the exact same idea. :)

The day you throw out that Foestrikers Tabard is going to be the same day you realize what a cool looking piece it was and off you go and help out some newbies in Sastasha a couple times. In some cases I'm sure they'd certainly appreciate the guidance or just a shorter queue to get in.

If there was zero reason to ever do an old dungeon again the queue times would be drastically lengthened, and for DPS queues it's already a fair stretch of time. Time and time I see this idea pop up and every time I repeat the same response. You gotta stop thinking of your own glamours for a moment and instead think about the game as a whole.

This data limit is pretty lame for a game in 2015.
If the PS3 is the problem, don't implement it there.
I can't understand the problem really, sounds more like a lame excuse.

You can get up to 6 additional retainers at the mog station now. 2+6=8

Not sure how its a data size problem as even if there were 1000+ pieces it's simply a 1/0 own or don't own and whatever other attributes you wish to add. Few kilobytes it seems to me, unless I am missing something. I'm not a programmer though.

At any rate, this is needed. I especially agree with the image examples a few posts down.

You seriously think players just delete gear and constantly rerun old dungeons and if that got taken away the queue times would be longer? You really think this happens on a daily basis and is a major factor for keeping queue times lower?

It might only result in a few extra kilobytes of extra memory per character, but multiply that by the millions of characters saved on the servers, and it could easily add up to several extra gigabytes.


Depending on how SE handles there servers, this could either be a non-issue for server strain, or cause their servers to crash. Most servers on a server farm only run at about 10% of what they're capable of, running them higher costs more in terms of electricity used, extra cooling, and possibility for a spike in processes to crash the server.

This is all moot though if they decide to store glamour log locally, would just depend on if PS3/4 could handle the increased save file size.

Ri-goddamn-diculous. Insane. Mindless. Pointless. Makes no sense whatsoever.
They should have changed that to like 2-3 minutes LONG ago, or even add flags to special items that trigger a save, so that those """poor""" crafters don't end up losing their shinies.
But honestly, I'm appalled at the fact that with how often this too comes up as "reasoning", nobody seems to see how glaring an issue it is.

Something along the lines of the op suggestion is needed, hands down. It is common place in other games and se needs to catch up.

FFXIV has some very cool aspects and pushed out a great game overall when they relaunched, but most concepts/ ideas are basic..bare minimum...a good start so to speak but not polished and nowhere complete.

Glamour being one of those.

As someone already replied to you with something similar to what I was going to say, I'll just add something else.

Unsync and undersized... if I am going to go back to ANY dungeon from ARR, for glamour specifically, then I am not going through DF, and literally everyone I know isn't either... and I can bet most (yes, most, not all) other people would do the same. Whether it's solo or just with one other, if they're really craving that one dungeon drop from an ARR dungeon, for glamour, then this is how they get it nowadays.

You no longer have to repeat "time and time again" that response now. Grats.

I'll always support a full cosmetics system in an MMO as long as it's not tied too heavily to RMT. Out of the games I've played, I still think Lord of the Rings Online did is best and should be the standard all other MMOs should shoot for.

I lost count how often this idea has been brought up but it appears to be in vain... nevertheless signed, this is needed!

To the ones saying "buuuut the amount of data stored..!!", I say:
The point is that the catalouge simply knows if you own the glamour rights to item xy or not. Things like dye, condition, spiritbond, etc. all do no longer have to be kept track of.
So in a way, it actually reduces the amount of data per character because I don't think I'm wrong when I say that most players have a pretty big stash of clothes stored somewhere (retainer or inventory) solely for glamour purposes. These items would be gone.

Also, like other said already, if I want glamour items from dungeons below 50, I just run them by myself and maybe with a friend for lvl 50 stuff. No newbie is gonna profit from me hunting for pretty lvl 15 armor anyways so it's not like a glamour catalouge would change that.
It could actually help the general ingame economy though - if all that's stored in the catalouge is the basic appearance of the piece, you still need prisms and colors, and assumingly a lot more than now, because more players would re-glamour their outfits if it wasn't such a hassle to do it like it is now.

However glamour options exist within places you cannot go undersized, to which you'll need to run with a party. The tabard example was just the first item that came to mind as I was making the post.

The catalouge would actually have a positive influence on that.
You need to run content many times to get all the items you want, especially if 7 other people are rolling on it (heck, it took me 2 full years to finally get the lvl 15 dps body despite hundreds and hundreds of runs).
So you'd have people doing content again they ignore now, like Crystal Tower. To anyone who still wants to clear that content, it is helpful if others are trying to fill up their catalouge. And even if some people don't come back because they filled up their catalouge completely (which, like I said, would likely take years with everyone else also rolling on items!), the situation wouldn't be different from now where people only revisit old content if they get anything special for it (exp, tomes, etc.).

That, Atoli, is actually a really good point. People do love collecting things. Having a checklist to fill out may prompt some users to go and run dungeons they'd otherwise not. Throw on some glamour hunter achievement and the achievement hunters will be doing the same!

And them specific places aren't getting queue pops, if you're referring to the CT, ST and WoD raids, as of right now what little pops they do get are all that are actually wanting to do them still.

Everything else can be undersized, unsync or solo managed, aside from Coil's case in which it's PF centric. What remains from the previous mentions is what keeps that stuff active, and that is... people leveling their classes.

So again, next to nobody is running content for glamours via DF.

You know I 200% agree with this topic, but then again how would SE sell retainer service lol?
