Request for The Emperor's new boots

Hi, can we change the look of "The Emperor's new boots" only seeing their bare foots instead of wearing standard sandals? Just removing their sandals, invisible, like the other head (hat), body (Robe), hands (Gloves), etc. Except legs (Breeches) because that's forbidden to remove.

I wanted to glamour them. :p

i also want to be barefoot D:

i know, they can't change it so easy because of the different shoe models with heels and so on...

but we have seen Nanamo and Y'shtola where barefoot, i want too >.</

that would also increase the possibilitys for foot armor. we could have some nice anklets ^^/

Emperos new Boot works like the other Emperor gears.
It make it as if there is no gear in that slot equiped as if it is invisible. To make it to show not the standard (no shoes equiped) graphic would mean that it is no invisible gear anymore because everyone can still see that there is something equiped.

What we need are barefoot shoes

I'd say we shouldn't change the existing item because it does exactly what it's supposed to - it makes it look just as if you had nothing equipped in the foot slot. But, they should introduce a new item that lets you be barefoot. I don't get why this isn't an option =\

I wonder why 'barefooted' isn't the standard no-shoes-equipped look.

They could have added those sandals to the normal starting gear of each race. It's not like that naked feet are something that have to be covered like our nether regions.

As pointed out above, the reason for the sandals is indeed because of the various models with higher heels, thicker soles, etc. That said, I do agree it's a rather weird solution. I'm pretty sure actual bare feet could be done here as well - we already have completely flat shoes/boots/whatnots already, so I fail to see how that reasoning still stands tbh.

Yeah, I mean if you dyed leather sandals the same colour as your characters flesh you could probably mimic it anyway so I don't see why they couldn't implement it.

I'm not sure we actually do, though. Gear in this game doesn't replace the body part they cover (as they did in FFXI), but instead covers and surrounds it. Even the flattest shoe in the game has a sole thick enough to pad the space between the foot and the ground. Remove that, and the foot is actually hovering ABOVE the ground.

To have bare feet that avoid this problem, character models would actually have to be lowered to the ground whenever footwear was removed, which could introduce a host of other problems depending on what methods SE uses to determine how game models interact with one another.

It's for this same reason that we'll likely never see actual high-heel or platform shoes. Any footwear that changes the hight of the model is not a simple change to make. It's one that has a lot of side effects that may not be immediately plain. This is why SE is reluctant to do such a thing.

One possible solution would be to just ignore the padding, and let the bare-foot enthusiasts hover everywhere they go. It wouldn't be pretty, but I doubt it'd be a whole lot worse than the sundry clipping issues that already exist in the game...

This is probably the issue, but why *can't* they change character height? Not all characters are the same height. They already store our height somehow. Why can't they change it? I guess the game just isn't coded for it, since they need to make sure our clothes don't scale down when they have our height change, and they need to make sure our clothes don't float a few inches above our bodies and so on.


That said, they could totally have us float a few inches off the ground at all times. We're the freaking Warrior of Light! We can float if we want to! :O

I'd like to actually be barefoot while I idle in my hot tub overnight. The fact that I wear shoes in there baffles me. xD

Y'shtola and Nanamo barefoot were special models.

If they get rid of the sandals, your heels would be floating in the air. It's to accomodate for boots.

Either deal with it, or when they do let you hide those sandals, you get to deal with your heels floating in the air.

I'll take heeled boots over flat bare feet any day. Super flat boots are stupid uncomfortable to walk in.

Yes this would be a great option to have but I don't think they going to do it. Best we have that closest to barefoot is the lady's/lord's clogs.

This is really not a issue for those that really want the option.

It's always been absurd to me that you can't do this... you are at beach resorts, in baths, sleeping in bed or just going around in your house/room... in them things.

One solution would be to do something similar what DoA5 did, and do something that would extend the leg "model" so the high heeled default isn't apparent... in that games case they added a "shoe" that went over the default foot model to make a bare foot on the models... it sounds absurd but it's really quite simple, and would mean no more bathing or sleeping in shoes.

Making a "boot" of sufficient length that makes the foot model flat on the ground, while replacing with an "extended shin" or "thigh" of matching length to the point lowered by the foot that usually is taken up by the heel of sole of the shoes is essentially it... if that makes sense.

I hope this should happen, its not a big deal if the barefoot can hover above the ground.

You'd have to be a 3D modeler to understand why that would be a pain in the ass. Those guys are experts but it still is tough to mess with.

Err, have you played through the HW MSQ? As said in this thread, two NPCs have special bare foot models for specific cutscenes.

I don't believe that's actually the case here. We already have a variety of heel heights. Some are flatter or taller than others and the game adjusts to each of them. It could adjust to barefoot the same way it's already adjusting to different heels. The designers just chose for it not to.

(There are actually a couple different ways that a graphics engine could adjust heel heights and I'm not sure which this game uses. One option is to adjust our height to be character height + heel height. The other is to just shift the position of the foot, effectively lengthening our calves slightly when barefoot and shortening them when we wear high heels.)

The thing here, the overarching thing here is that the feet have always had sandals, even in 1.0 where clever players found actual nude character models (they lacked 'fine details' and males were 'flat as Ken dolls'). The sandals are about as naked as feet are going to get because they aren't shoes, they are 'surgically attached'.

Clearly it is possible to make shoes that deviate from what you said. I can, however, see how it would be difficult to make the default no-shoes feet naked, since that'd most likely require them to re-work all the currently existing boots and shoes. But it shouldn't be too difficult for them to make a pair of shoes that make your feet look naked. Apart from that whole 'make the shoes have the same colour as the shade of your skin' issue, of course ^^;

I'm curious if that actually does increase the height or if it simply compresses the character model lol. Cuz uhh... either those are 9+ inch heels (meaning your character gets taller) or that old Chinese tradition of foot binding is a thing in Eorzea.

No it doesn't, sadly lol. It just makes you look "higher" but your character still have same height.

Honestly, I have to wonder why the original makers of this game thought having those weird sandals over being barefoot was a good idea to begin with.

Maybe they will add a barefoot option in 3.2? Most likely not but one can dream.

this is super easy to fix if they implement some kind of "barefoot shoes" - instead of the ugly sandals we could wear a shoe that looks like the naked foot but is a tiny bit bigger / ticker than the actual foot. then there is no hovering and we can be barefoot o.o/ of course these "shoes" have to match our choosen skintone. but i think it's way less work than overhauling the whole character models.

Since changing the height of the character models might be a tedious task just for what they believe to be what very few people want, and taking the simple barefoot route would kinda make moving(/floating) around Eorzea look awkward, I'd like to bring up the idea of having something like...

"Glass Slippers"
With multiple levels of transparency from crystal clear to Cinderella level clarity. And, maybe if the developers can manage, will turn invisible though certain emotes such as sit and doze. Since they have relic weapons with changing animation i wouldn't imagine it be impossible for footwear.

On a side note, can we get the ability to dye our underwear/Emperors Gear? I'd like to have Pure White Emperor's New Boots that could match a pure white appearance. Since they already have dyable Leather Sandals it shouldn't be too hard now should it?
