SE, Please do somthing about the boring gear stats.. Please just read first...

Seriously, more variety? Every piece of gear has basically a little more of the same stat from the last. You have nothing you work hard for gear wise.

Where are the gear stats? Make gear worth it, every other MMO has this?
+ Poison Resist
+ Elemental Resist
+ TP refresh bonus
+ Mp refresh bonus
+ Bonus to mp on sunny days?
1% of autoattack damage is converted to hp!

Seriously, do somthing, make a Little horizontal gear progression, people like to actually work for gear that isn't replaced in a day. I160 gear? gone in less than a day...

Yoship's reasoning is this would make some people or jobs desirable over others.

really? you can choose who you want in duty finder? Your going to kick someout out of party finder because they don't have tp bonus?
Sounds like an excuse.

What about those games that square are known for, almost all final fantasy's have some type of job combined ability's.. Skill chains, triple attacks.. be unique, give people a reason to chain ability's together. make being in a party fun..

after the 3.0 story, ffxiv feels like another repeat of endgame 2.0.. weekly kill, get vertical loot, wait a week... repeat. Give us a 100 floor randomly generated dungeon to explore.. somthing to do in the meantime. I believe you did that with a few other final fantasy games.

I know what people are going to say, If you don't like it, leave.. etc.. etc.. Yeah, I know. I get it. I don't want to leave, I just want them to make the game more enjoyable. Right now it feels like your on a boring vertical gear grind. Fates are terrible.. terrible..
Why can't we make Exp parties where we set up camp and pull monsters again? It feels like monster placement in the overworld is just there to slow you down from running to quest points. Can we give the mob placement an actual reason to be there, maybe XPing on them?

This. We had it in 1.x and lost it in the transition to 2.0.

Give relics job-specific bonuses like -pdt for Paladins or Cover Duration+ or whatever.

Give Ifrit weapons enfire bonuses.

Give some mage gear refresh+.

Something that means that ilevel is not the be all and end all stat.

Edit: iirc Yoshi said this was something they would look into after 2.0 released. Perhaps an update on this?

someone wasn't around when you needed a paladin to stun ifrit and a summoner/blm to lb nails.

people literally dropped duty over it, so yes if people choose to use useless stats they will be kicked/harrassed/shuned

Seriously, even if you have to cut back on the stats on weapons, example. "give ifrit weapon enfire bonus"
Cut back on the damage from the weapon itself and give it to the bonus..
let's say you'd create a weapon with 200 damage..
give the weapon 190 damage with a 10 damage enfire bonus.. even if you fool the player. The player doesn't realize they arn't even getting a bonus.. cripe, make the enemy engulf in flame after you hit it and call it enfire bonus. I don't care. just.. do something different.. lol

I'm just using those for examples.. I assume that SE can come up with better idea's then me :)

Also with a chance of 25% to trigger the enfire bonus. A bonus that is non-stop active is not really a bonus.

Little extra effects I will like to see on primal weapons

Ifrit: 10% chance to do a AoE auto-attack damage (fire spread out)
Garuda: 10% chance to speed up movement speed by 20% (wind speed up)
Ramuh: 10% chance to stun the enemy (stunned by lightning)

They could at least get rid of accuracy entirely. There is no point to it and with it removed people could play more style they wanted (skill speed all, crit all, det all, etc)

And with that, the race for gears begins...

Gear gets some degree of interesting stats to aim for? Check.
Those stats don't force you to wear that gear for the next ten years like in Final Fantasy XI? Check.
Additional grinding content to further enhance and specialize your Jobs, like Final Fantasy XIs Merit system? Check.

Certainly seems like a perfectly simply solution to giving gear unique stats without making certain gear vastly superior because of those bonuses... I mean of course it is, it's an idea taken directly from the best Final Fantasy game. Just do it Yoshida. It has plenty of room for additions going forward as well; Bards AF1 body could have "Enhances Ballads", AF1.5 could have "Enhances Ballads II", and the upcoming AF2 "Enhances Ballads III". Would add an extra level of thought going into encounters as well; "Do I need this set for this fight?", etc. which I'd certainly enjoy. Only issue I'd perhaps have is grinding to unlock stuff, but as long as it is streamlined and not stuck suffering at the hands of the RNGesus (like Materia, I swear 99% of my hate for SBing comes from Convert giving me trash) I don't think I'd mind too much.

They are busy making it looks pretty ;)
The funny thing is, they probibly spend alot of money on gear design. This would actually have people hold on to particular pieces of gear because of the bonus they give for at least a little bit, Might even save SE some money on gear design since they wouldn't be putting so many models out so much >.>

OP has some valid points and I can understand where he's coming from but I dont think stats are what this game needs to give it variety. I think just giving more things to do besides grind for gear in raids would be nice. I would like to see some more open world stuff happening and some open world dungeons would be pretty cool as well.

What worries me is that Yoshi's philosophy is to play safe. Is this what we have to look forward too five years down the line? Grinding for tombstones of generics for our ilvl 560 gear just so we can then enter the next raid in order to get our hands on the ilvl 565 gear?

I totally agree with you, open world stuff would be awesome. Open world dungeon you can go down into, with monsters that require a party to kill that is NOT a fate with a boss that drops a piece of unique gear that isn't just an ilevel upgrade would rock..

I see people going, oh, i need to get gordian stuff next, because it's ilevel 190 over 180, then i'll just glamour it to look like my current.. Off the top of your head, without looking, can you tell me what stats the gordian black mage chest piece has on it? do you care? no, because it's the highest ilevel. you know it has Vit, you know it has Int.. that's all that matters.. ;)

It would be foolish to think people are just going to eat up the exact same thing year after year. That simply isn't how humans work...

People are fine with it now because this game really isn't that old, but eventually the constant copy and paste approach to progression in this game is going to hurt the game in the long term. Heck, if I asked people who I got to try this game why they stopped, I think I can safely say the the gear progression system in this game will certainly be one of the top reasons. It is one of the most frequent complaints I see leveled at this game, from people who quit and people who are still playing, and sadly Heavensward did nothing to change that, so far...

People will eventually get tired of the same thing year after year, if the developers don't spice things up it's going to have a negative impact eventually.

It doesn't really change anything aside from having more "trap" gear. Someone will math out the absolute optimal pieces and everyone with sense will aim for that. People that fail to meet those criteria will be shunned.

i don't know the individual player so i couldn't say.

and yes the stats do matter it's why we have bis. do i know it? no but i also don't play for bis.

if you see a player in all tome gear or all raid gear they are weaker then someone who finds the best gear (secondary stats)

That's why I think this is such a perfect solution. Final Fantasy IX nailed this problem 15 years ago.

You have your BiS lance; Dragon's Hair, but you also want to go out and get a Kain's Lance or Holy Lance, because honestly, what chump doesn't get Freya the Dragon's Crest ability?

I've never once seen a player get kicked for having tome gear of the same ilevel over raid gear. even not being BiS.. I have seen people getting kicked for lying about completing a duty and/or not knowing their rotation.

I certainly think it would be possible to add special effects to weapons while still maintaining balance between classes. Maybe don't even put these special effects on endgame weapons for now and just have them on low level stuff like the dungeon gear for regular dungeons. That was people who are leveling (where starts aren't that influential anyway) can have fun with it. This would be very cool and useful for things like primals where using the ifrit weapon on shiva might deal extra damage... I'm not saying it should be godly damage, but maybe equivalent to like 20 ilevels stronger than it usually is (which is still weaker than the best gear you could take into the fight, but for someone who just got to this point in the story its a nice boost just for a single fight). In that example, its not like people would kick you for not having the ifrit weapon, just like people don't currently kick those who don't have hive weapons.



I definitely like the idea of more horizontal progression, even if its just having the choice between using chest armor with either +crit OR +accuracy... I remember in other MMOs I would spend quite a bit of time figuring out which pieces of gear I wanted to go for... I want the chest from Dynamis, the head piece from Sky, the legs from Sea, and the hands from this Notorious Monster. Its not always as fun when you put all your eggs in the same basket, like all the FFXIV endgame content has been. Back in FFXI, every expansion had its own endgame with different, comparable loot. I think that was a much better design.

I do miss WoW tier set bonuses sometimes, but each tier was usually hit or miss. I'd never want back an XI system where some outside event like weather can affect stats though. I'm okay with world mobs as they are, I'm just waiting on the HW fate changes.

3.0 feels as if they did nothing but work on the looks to promote the game and have nice cutscenes. Contentwise it offers nothing new at all. It is even shocking that they dared to give us the same stuff as in 2.0 only with different looks. And charge for it like a full new game. (even though - looking at the way content updates lost their drive in 2.0, they basicly used the subscription money to work on 3.0 mostly). It is quite a rip off and im very sensitive about upcoming updates.

not being kicked doesn't mean it's not important, other than raids you can get away with any items.

i was just replying based on how you said people only look at ilvl which isn't true. some people do (i do) but that doesn't mean bis doesn't exist/isn't important.

WoW did it in vanilla and no one was a fan, seems to work better in a single player game like monster hunter. The adding skill or attributes to skills can be fun sometimes if done right, but the problem is that adds a second layer of balance that at this time still needs to be worked out. I might be fine with change on what secondary stats you can get form different gear (so come out with three dungs and one give det, one crit, etc.) So that you can mix and match secondary stats form dungeon gear (as long as it is not random and yes maybe someone will come out with the "best" but it is fun to collect all the gear). I just do not think anyone likes game breaking stuff or reqs. for gear like you need at least this much poison resist to tank this dung. (I think people are already fed up with accuracy caps and needing this much accuracy to continue).

Because in addition to carrying around gear for 12 Jobs, i absolutely want to also be carrying 3+ sets for each of the 12 Jobs.
Because we don't ALREADY have a buttload of crap to store.

The problem all these threads seem to miss is that if we had for example, 20 unique stats and random job specific bonuses, then the math folk would simply do as they did for WoW and every other MMO (XI *only* got away with it because you could change gear in combat) and math out the best stats to make the best possible DPS and then all other stats are junk.

Hell, as a Warrior in WoW during early Lich King, i loved my crit/haste build. It wasn't the greatest DPS, but it was incredibly fun. Yet i was not allowed to use it in raid content because full Strength+Armor Penetration was statistically superior in every way.

You need to realize that if you have 100 unique stats to mix and match with, all of those need to be 100% on par with each other. Thus removing the "fun" because it doesn't matter what you wear, your DPS/healing isn't going to change.
If one stat gets even 1% ahead of the other stats, everything else is junk.

Except you don't carry the gear around... Did you even read the suggestion I linked?

You get the gear, Spiritbond it (or whatever, really, they could do anything to make it work), then you unlock the trait on the gear permanently in a menu similar to the Additional Actions in the Actions and Traits menu. Do whatever with the gear afterwards.

I guess you'd perhaps need to carry it around to Spiritbond it, but that shouldn't be a length process (since RNG should be cut out). Really though, all I'm seeing is an argument for why they need to improve the inventory in this game... That's something they just need to do anyway...

Well now you've confused me. You're for Materia offering "interesting stuff"?

I can check your gear and see what Materia you've melded. I cannot check your own personal menu and see what stats you've unlocked/set. So you'd shoot down the suggestion no one but yourself can really check because people will be elitist, but you're for the one which people can actually out right check by examining you? That seems backwards to me, sorry.

As far as balance goes, individually I do not think these things would be particularly powerful or anywhere close to required. They would just be bonuses for people who want the bonuses, just like getting full raid-tier gear even though you cleared the raid without it to get it, except unlike such gear (and materia) elitist pricks wouldn't be able to examine you to determine whether you even have that 0.5% bonus. Something extra for the developers to worry about balancing, sure, but personally I'd rather my subscription fee go into doing interesting "new" (how new is it when its from a 15 year old game?) things, than just copy and pasting the exact same progression system from 2.0 update after update.

Again though, these are optional traits. Nobody would really be able to check you have them and kick you as a result... It's not like Swiftcast or something, where people can observe you never using it or check your Black Mages level to see if you even have it. Nobody would really be able to discriminate based on such traits. I mean perhaps someone with a parser could, but that's already against the rules so /shrug. Perhaps something like Auto-Life, but that's OP single player tier and I really don't think anyone would suggest we get something like that.

But, your already required to get the higest ilevel for raid? Why not make that highest ilevel stuff interesting gear stats.. your still going to have to get something..
You know. I have a pair of boots that work on every job from getting them in 1.0. they give you a increase in running time bonus in cities, and i still use them to this day, I throw them on and i can sprint longer in town. luckly, se didn't remove the bonus.

Which Enhancements do you balance around?

I made a post a long while back about using Materia to modify our skills directly, Sort of like what the WoW Glyph System was originally supposed to do but ended up being generic damage/duration/cooldown bonuses.
The short version of it is basically change Materias to offer changes to the way our Skills work.
To throw an example, a Materia that causes Umbral Ice and Astral Fire for a Black Mage to flip effects, Allowing a Black Mage to use Blizzard the way they now use Fire.
Or a Materia that causes a Monks Auto Attack speed to skyrocket, but reduces the damage dealt accordingly so that its a visual change more than a power bonus.
Essentially, small, mostly playstyle changes that make our Jobs feel a bit more personal in HOW we play them without altering the base mechanics of what they do.
The Egi Glamour system talked about by Yoshi is one such system that lets us alter our Jobs visually without the need for attendant Balance modifications.

Unfortunately, the majority of people would just consider needless complexity along with extra work they have to do to get the gear. Probably the same reason no mobs have any elemental resistances like they did in XI...

Accessibility sometimes acts in the direct opposite interest of complexity and making you actually think. This is one of those times. Most people don't wanna think that hard about their gear, the vertical progression gear treadmill is what they are accustomed to, again a product of WoW. Casuals pay the bills, so most of the time, devs need to cater to them.

You cant meld the majority of endgame armor and weapons. Only crafted items which are usualy 20 ilvls behind the rest.

Okay, I read that post and honestly that's a great idea. Not specifically for us as players but for SE's wallets. Force players to grind equipment XYZ = sub fee's. If people enjoy it it's a bonus.

Well, I expect them to be marginal enough to ultimately not really matter, just like optimal gear ultimately doesn't matter when it comes to clearing content, just like optimal party set up doesn't, just like food doesn't really matter.

People who want every single advantage would care, people who just like that sort of thing would care, people who are "casual" perhaps wouldn't and it wouldn't really impact them in the slightest. Fights would continue to be balanced around a lower iLevel than what people will eventually farm them with, with Healers not DPSing, without food, etc. Mechanics will still be the biggest priority and knowing your rotation would still be the biggest boon to any Job. All this would be is an additional piece of food for those who obsess over such things to obsess over. It would perhaps require some additional balancing, but if they keep the bonuses small enough it wouldn't be anything serious, there shouldn't be a case where you're required to have "Enhances Ballads", for example.

Just like food and optimal gear, it would just be something to speed encounters along, rather than a requirement.

I imagine it would only force those of us with some form of OCD who'll have to unlock every single trait, though personally I'd probably enjoy that so obvious bias is obvious. Final Fantasy IXs AP system had a limit to how much you could even set, so they out right have a cap on how much of a benefit such a system could provide, meaning they can make it just as marginal as food and other stuff. I'd like to think it would just be something there for those of us who'd enjoy obsessing over some tiny percentage bonus by looking at an encounter and adjusting accordingly.

There is also the fact that, for some of the more "important" ones, you can perhaps remove the actual need to go out and grind; If you're a Bard, chances are you'll be getting the AF2 gear in a few weeks. If that had Enhances Ballads on it to unlock, like the suggestion... suggests.... You've already got that then.

Just saying that SE's biggest audience is casuals and a more complex gear system, regardless of how little it matters (which in the end all be all why should SE spend money on something that does not impact there game beyond power gamers?) it would be a new reason that a casual would find fault with the game. Most do not raid more than once or twice and would probably not effect them, but then you would see countless I cannot get X gear cuz no one runs it anymore treads. Gear being easy to jump back into like the treadmill is good for casuals and intermittent players. It makes it easy to catch up and get back to content.

In no way I am saying these are bad systems I love FFTA and love the system of learning skills through using a weapon, but it works better in a single player game where having every skill is not going to be held against you (but the combos you get by mixing skills from different jobs so fun). The same with the idea of resistances which is fun in monster hunter where the lure is the grind of killing monsters to make armor from them. I am ok with the tier buffs, but as someone said they are hit and miss. I think the only way to make materia work is to make crafting more relevant. Make it so I can grind the law tomes or I can craft/have crafted gear that I can customize more.
