Suggestions from a new player

Hey all,*

Iv recently began playing ffxiv a couple days ago and iv made it to 18 CON so far. For the most part im having a blast, and enjoying Gridanias story line (especially cuz im CON). I have some issues and suggestions for the game. I feel that the dev team could use some feedback from new players especially since they are trying to accomidate newer players for the ps3 release.

•More tutorial quests
I felt that after the begining story line quests were completed i was just kind of thrown into eorzea without further introduction to any other aspects of the game.*

I know we have the journal map, but it would be nice to be able to track these quests by having locations tracked on the minimap and on the world map as well.

•Equipment vendors
We have the market wards, but it would be nice to be able to find equipment at non player pricing and availability. The fact that i had to travel to uldah (Since gridania is empty) to find equipment in the market wards is unacceptable.

•General chat
I know people complain about spammers in chat, but the whole in game community seems mute to me and that needs to change.

•Average level shown at camps on world map
With not much to do iv been exploring for good solo camps to level up in but i always end up reaching a place with higher level mobs. It would be nice to show the appropriate level for certain areas so i know where i could head to next.

•Solo camps
I enjoy soloing as much as i like grouping and have been soloing completely so far and intend to do so for most of the leveling process. I was soloing last night on opo's and oil bugs at lvl16-18 near camp tranquil, and was getting 500xp for bugs and 900 for opos with some down time.*I dont know how the rest of the game is but i have a feeling that most leveling is done by grouping on field mobs.*
It would be nice to have map indicators of good grind camps for your level, as well as camps without indicators for secret camp location purposes. :)

Fields of valor in select locations would be a great addition to ffxiv.

•Leve mobs
I found it so lame that often times the leve mobs would be grouped together making it impossible to tag only 1, even on solo difficult. I found myself getting wrecked at camp tranquil during these leves because i couldent take on 2 mobs at a time. Maybe im not high enough to take on those leves just yet, but i know i could complete them if i could fight 1 mob at a time.

•Random cut scene events
It would be cool if we could have random events happen to us while traveling. Traveling on foot is kind of boring right now, and i believe this could spice things up.*
Events could be anything from chocobo stampedes to garlean ambush, treasure found, quests etc

•unknown random npc quests and items

Currently all quests are marked with "!", it would be cool if npc's could be randomly set as a questgiver and jump from npc to npc once completed, this would give players incentive to interact with npc's to find that cool hidden quest. Random quest npc's that jump from location to location out on the field would be a nice touch too.*

iv always enjoyed in old school rpgs when i talked to a npc and they end up giving me a item. Little things like this keep people entertained and immersed.

•Interactive objects

Im the type of player thats likes to check everything in games when possible for that hidden item or event/area. Using pokemon as a example, while in a cave i check every boulder for that hidden nugget or potion or when in a house i check the garbage for items as well.

•Camera control

Please make it so i can left click on the screen and move my camera around while moving without turning my character.

• UI
It would be nice if a mobs element type could be shown when selected.
- A zoom out function for both mini and world maps is needed

-Area of effect button needs to stay, its to legit to get rid of.

•Linkshells
With no general chat in cities and bad LS commands i find its a bit difficult to find the correct person to invite you into a LS.*
Could a LS counter be added that allows a LS leader to post their guild as open for recruitment as well as letting players apply to said LS.

Any other new players with suggestions please post!

Meh I really don't want the game telling you which way to go for everything. We need more community talk in this game and it's slowly starting to get that way with SP grind parties and Raids.

Um solo grinding, good look on later ranks. You will more than likely HAVE to go in grind parties... unless your gonna grind 8 leves every 36 hours.

Group up is all I can say, especially for leves. You'll get them done faster and get a boost from that at the end in sp.

Finally, I will never see eye-to-eye with a MMO player that solos. It just.. meh

The journal is more than enough. Once you get close enough to the target location, it pops on the minimap.

They're bunched together because they're in a mob party. You're not going be able to tag just one.

they do have that type of camera movement. You have to be in manual control of your character's movement though. It's a trade off between autorun and fine camera control.

You can zoom out on the world map, it's not necessary on the minimap. Weaknesses of mobs should be learned not handed out, and AOE is not availale for all spells so, no, it shouldn't always be available.

LS stuff is not in the forefront of changes til they have the important things like battle system, class changes and balancing and content added in.

Im not against grouping up at all and i intend to group,as i stated i really enjoy doing it, but there are times that i just want to solo. As for finding a group it may be easier if i had a LS. If the game told me where to go id have more time to level and less time looking for a good camp.

I learned this the hard way prob wasted 500k+ gil on items and not going to Uldah and that's the place you but and sell stuff.

ITT: New players dont matter, this game is HARDCORE. L2P etc.

Edit: I found merit in most of your concerns. Most had to do with user friendliness and I agree with those. This game needs to be more user-friendly, it's a pain to pick up as a new player. This coming from me trying to get several friends to play and they couldn't make it past level 10 because the game was too much of an annoyance to play.

I know they are lol, and i know the reason why i got owned was because i was to low, but i still think grouping them up is rediculous

The enemies around a camp are usually at that camp's level range, so I'd go looking in the general vicinity of camp Tranquil if those are the current leves you are doing.

On guildleve difficulty, don't be afraid to go back and do the lower rank leves even if you have higher ranks available. If you can set the older ones at a high difficulty and complete them quickly to get the time bonus they might be more SP than the higher rank ones and a lot less of a headache. Don't forget about all your buffs before you engage, Protect + Shell + Stoneskin + Shock Spikes gives you a good amount of breathing room. If you work on Thaumaturge a little bit you can also pick up Sacrifice which gives you a nice Regen effect.

It may not have just been a low rank but may have been the way your allotment points were used or the spells and combos thereof. Also, do you have a second job started? This ALSO can help with you getting "handled" at certain times in PTs, Leves, or solo.

As for looking for NPCs with gear and such... they already have on your mini map and the full map little "sacks/money bags" indicating where NPCs are. No it doesn't tell you what they sell... that is for you to do and explore. ;)

Not to come of like a jerk but, you have to do some of the work. This is not a linear type RPG or MMORPG it's not going to guide you through everything to get you from A-B. You can use different websites to gather more info if you have difficulty locating some of the things you are asking about. If the chat seems low, start up a conversation with the other players and YOU be the one who makes the difference.

Thanks for the tips! I normally always buff up before doing anything, I will work on Thm for sacrafice (did not know this) thank you!

If i wanted the game to play itself id start a bot up, knowing more information to make decisions on how you play the game is different than having the game play itself. Im guessing your talking about the camp indicator suggestion and the quest tracking. The game already tracks the game for you just not in a clean manner. Good camps for group or solo play becomes common knowledge as you progress through the game, but only as you progress why cant i know this from the start? A little FoV book on the world map would be great! I could imagine opening up my world map and see little books scattered around indicating "Good leveling spot!" as well as areas that arent marked but are just as good.

Anyways i guess thats just my opinion and im sure they are working on making the game a little bit more user friendly. Thanks for the Map zoom info! (Scrolling using mouse wheel is better :P)

I didn't play FFXI until last week and I figured out FFXIV during open beta within a few days. I thought FFXI players were so hardcore and hate on-rail style. Maybe not. Maybe I'm just used to the old MMOs/sand-box ones :rolleyes: heck even Runescape has much less direction and on-rail than this.

That said, a lot of what OP ask for are already in game one form or another. Camp rank will determine the surrounding mobs rank and Regional Levequest will tells you what rank the Camp is. If you can't get Levequest for that Camp, it's obvious it's a No-No to go there and hit on those mobs. There isn't much grinding spot, because the game was intended to let you level through Levequest and Dungeon, grinding camp is just something players come up on their own. They will fix this soon. You don't really need map track, because the journal already track it for you and once you get close you will see the (!) on your mini-map, what else do you need? An auto-walk perhaps?

I played FFXI for 2 years and loved it and i emphesize love as i think its my favorite MMO of all time, but then i found WoW which was in its 1st or 2nd year, it didnt have as much user friendly features as it does now but the user friendly experience was still there as well as hardcore aspects. I got hooked as did millions of other players then the game started getting even more casual and even easier than i hoped for and i quit. Im not looking for "Easy Mode" im looking for "Better Mode" if that makes sense...btw i just found a group of ladybugs 20-25 i could solo for a bit...right next to an area filled with level 50 mobs lol

Cool now it makes sense. It is a rather unfriendly user interface and game at times. It's a bit more "grown-up" I guess one could say. I know I spent about an hour with a brand new player to XIV and to the FF MMO series. Even he mentioned this and he felt swallowed into this abyss of..."WTF do I do in here?!" @.@ I see the point you're making. ;)

Congrats on your find of the LBGs! You will come across those "camps" and you will also see upper level mobs in really low ranked areas. They just don't aggro. It sort of I think, enitces players to try their luck when they think they can.

I hope you find that same love for XIV as I know myself and others loved when we played XI as well. It's getting there with SE wanting our input and for the most part, creating a world we are all really growing to enjoy. :D

Most of Not all.... or are you trying to say i found a place to solo? It was right next to the camp tranquil...finding places after that may prove to be harder and still requires time i could use to level if i knew where i could go.

Hi OP. Welcome aboard! You have a lot of valid concerns regarding interface and new player friendliness.

The User Interface forum may also appreciate your support for a quest tracker. There's the journal with the map button there that will show the quest-related NPC or location, but hide all other markers, but to me, couldn't that quest objective be incorporated into my regular map? Little touch ups like that here and there. It's not like a player knows where to go without checking the journal map, so ... why not?

And I think most of the folks here don't know what it's like starting from scratch with physical level 1 with 1.18. Unfortunately, the mages are some of the tougher classes to rank up. Chances are, your physical level is lower than your mage rank, so you don't have too many points to invest into Vitality and the like. Even if you did, as you said, groups of enemies unleashing their weapon skills or spells can take a mage down pretty fast which makes soloing a leve less sexy than advertised).

Better direction after the entry missions could be desired. And the cities aren't balanced in the sense that players have crammed their retainers in unsafe and unhealthy conditions that is the wards of Ul'dah with overpriced beginner and intermediary gear. Gridania and Limsa Lominsa across the servers appears to be less than populated.

I was a crafter before leveling DoW/DoM so I had Physical Level 50 when my highest DoW was 30 so it's moot pre or patch 1.18, lol. I have zero problem killing a bunch of Fachan (deadliest leve mobs yet) with my CON, my Mage stat is only 40 INT 60 MND 40 PIE.

This is where I refer back to the "And I think most of the folks here don't know what it's like starting from scratch with physical level 1 with 1.18." Remember as a higher physical level, you have more points to play around with. You and I can pump at least 80 Vitality for that HP buffer and still have some have decent mage stats. Outfitted ourselves due to our previous time investments in crafting, connections, and/or pre-gil inflation. Use Stygian Spikes to keep that MP up longer, maybe we even have a recovery ability like Second Wind or Aegis Boon so we're not seeing red HP after getting hit by a single weapon skill.

A new conjurer in Gridania is going to have a difficult time soloing.

Lol i have no skills but Con skills so far, im guessing you dont know what its like trying to take down a 23 opo at Con lvl 17 rank 13, i could describe the fight since its like rythem to me now lol starts of with it gaining tp with ranged attacks while i can get 2-3 moves in then it unloads and spams its kick move forcing me to cure after every tp move and trying to dps it down at the same time...1 mistake and im dead

Because I didn't start from scratch, correct? And FYI, crafting wasn't going to net you as much gil as you would have liked, in fact I was bleeding gil faster than any newbie currently playing. They made crafting a lot easier/less expensive now. Even with the nerf gil reward newbie crafters now don't have to go around begging for material like I had to. Yep, begging.

Its been a while since i hit one up. But i remember the really low end stuff being pretty reasonable. there mid and "high end" items can be spendy if you are on a tight budget. But Really these npc's act as a convenience if a particular item is not being sold by any one, And they moonlight as a gill purge for the economy.

Most every thing else in your post has been pretty well covered by other posters. One thing that was not mentioned by others was about Global chat. A while back it came out that yoshida san wants to get something like this in the game. how ever they stated that there are some technical hurdles that must be jumped first before its put in.
