The Market needs a listing fee or it'll never be a balanced and fair economy

Square-Enix, Yoshi-P and the other developers.

FF XIV's player economy is missing one of the most crucial elements that makes an auction-house based player economy stable; listing fees.

Without a list fee, players who are able to camp out the boards for 8+ hours a day are able to price gouge and monopolize the price of goods, making it impossible for any casual player to sell their wares for reasonable rates.

I don't want to single anyone out as doing something "wrong", because I believe they are entitled to game the system you designed for profits. But this isn't allowing other players to participate in the economy to raise money. That causes frustration, which means they are less likely to stick with the game.

A small number of players intentionally crashing markets to then buy up all the items and relist them at a much higher rate is not an imaginary thing. Players will outright admit this is what they are doing.

I have also done some experiments with items being sold at 1 gil. I've boughten them all up and then re-listed them at 50 gil each, and sure enough I sold all the stacks. But within 1 day that good was selling at 1 gil again. I dont know if it's bots or what, but it seems the market is endlessly getting crashed.

I have a level 50 Miner. Pretty much everything I mine is generally worthless at any given time of day, as there are people selling cobalt ore at 1-10 gil per 99 stack. This is true for a lot of the minable items on my server and it seems true for a lot of other gathering crafts, too.

Heck, even crafting materials items you can buy from NPCs, people are selling them for 1 gil.

You need to stop the ability for a small number of highly active players to camp the marketboards and continually undercut other more casual players. Simply adding a list price where the player must pay 5% of the rate just to list the item on the market board will address this issue. Players will no longer camp the boards and constantly undercut each other, or sell items for 1 gil. This is because they will end up not making any money at all.

I don't object the suggestion, but it is predictable that those "small number of highly active players to camp the marketboards" would still undercut everyone or list another stock right after you, and now the "more casual players" would lost 5% if they adjust the price...

They just as well be bots. Or at the very least bear the intellectual capacity of a 20th century Roomba, since they can easily get 1 gil or more just by vendorizing the items in the first place.

I don't think it'd rip off casuals.

The undercutting is largely done by the same small group of players, not everyone. It's easy to see because their retainer names are shown. They pick some good to try to manipulate the market with, and focus on it.

Let's say you're trying to sell a 99 stack of an item at 100 gil each. That's 9,900 gil total, so you have to pay 495 gil to list it.

Then someone else puts another stack up at 1 gil less. So you decide to try to relist your price and undercut by 1 gil less, too. You have to pay another listing fee of 5% of 9,898, which is 494.

If you guys keep trying to undercut one another, you're gonna end up spending more gil listing the darn thing than what you're trying to sell it for. You quickly realize that, so you stop undercutting and the market prices stabilize around values based on demand for the item and/or (in the case of crafting goods) what the item can be used to make that will sell at a higher rate.

With fee listings, players learn the best way to sell their items is at a similar cost as other players. They are no longer able to constantly undercut to get a quicker sale.

This is why listing fees exist in any MMO with an auction house system. Except FF XIV, apparently.

The point isn't to get rid of undercutting, but to get rid of the intentional market crashing that people are trying to do by relisting goods over and over again until they irritate the person and/or get them to list the good low enough the monopolizer buys the items up and then relists them at a high price. The monopolizer can no longer do that because it costs them too much gil to play that market crashing game.

Yeah there's been some occasions I bought the items and vendored them myself. But the time spent with the window constantly opening and re-opening compared to the profit made from vendoring isnt very good.

Normally, if you were sure that it would be a long while before the market self-corrected, the only thing you could do was remark and 1gil him or repost in smaller quantities than he's offering.

I'm sorry, but if "Item X" isn't selling, then move on to "Item Y"~ followed by "Item Z"

over the course of the previous week, HQ vintage Kite Shields have gone from 10-12k to....3.9k~ Why?

Because people have realised that the dungeon that drops the scarred kite shield also drops salable dungeon gear which the chest pieces are selling for between 27k-59k depending on which you get~

I'm not bitter about it~ I still farm the dungeon because it's a somewhat enjoyable dungeon (properly allows healers to dps without paying much attention to hp until after the first boss). I however have moved on to spiritbonding gathering accessories. Raptorskin Choker, Electrum earrings, Militia Braclets and 2 Aetheryte rings(for spiritbond gain) cost less than 15k in total. the materia you gain from the 5 items can easily sell for over 100k

No listing fee please~

I hear if you spam Rage of Halorne on the market board, your auctions don't get undercut.

Each server has about 18,000 to 23,000 players. And we all have 2 Retainers who can sell multiple items.

The idea that if one item isn't selling you can simply go sell a different item just doesn't work. Other than extremely rare drops like treasure map minions and high-level crafting gear / materia, most items I've seen are sold for less than 100 gil. A lot of stuff is actually being listed for 1-10 gil.

And it isn't that there isn't demand. You can list items that are needed for leve-quest turn ins, and people will still list the items for barely nothing. It's because a select few players camp the boards all day relisting their wares to undercut other people to purposely crash the markets. They drive the prices down to as low as possible, then try to buy up each other's items and relist them at a march higher rate. It can work but when a bunch of people are doing it, it really just means the prices constantly crash.

Not true.

In a market board with a listing fee, if someone lists their wares at a huge markdown from the normal cost of the item, someone who plays the market is going to buy the items up and then relist them at the true average market price to turn a profit.

That's how auction houses in other MMOs correct themselves. But it doesn't happen here because there's no penalty to just keep changing your prices.

i'm sorry... while I also get frustrated trying to sell stuff on the markets because people constantly undercut my prices... this is just a reincarnation of the argument that people who can play this game all day long should be penalized for being able to play it all day long so people who can't play it all day long can keep up. while i'm one of those people that don't get to play more than a couple hours a day if that, I don't think it's fair for people who can play all day to be held back just because I can only play a couple hours a night. and all of this assumes that this game is somehow suppose to be fair across all players. those who can play the game more often than others will be able to get farther ahead faster. just the nature of videogames in general.

In order for it to be a request to hold other players back from progress, the suggestion would need to be placing limits on how many times they can list per day or something. Which is not what is being asked for.

Instead the suggestion is to implement listing prices like every other MMO with an auction house has. Including the first MMO to have an auction house- WoW.

I imagine the FF XIV developers either forgot or didn't realize they needed a listing fee for the auction house. I highly doubt they intended the item markets to crash constantly at 1 gil per item, or for the severe amount of undercutting that occurs.

a request to hold other players back does not have to necessarily require placing limits on how many times they can list per day. your original complaint involved people sitting there for 8 hours a day watching the markets and manipulating them. thus, it can be assumed that your original complaint was only against those who sit around all day manipulating the market. a fix to stop only those that can play all day is a request to hold them back. but if your complaint is really about stopping undercutting by everyone and not just those who can watch markets all day... then you might be correct.

additionally, there is a listing fee. but the listing fee gets subtracted from the sale price of the item after the transaction has taken place. so how does having to pay a listing fee up front rather than after the transaction get rid of undercutting?

well lets think about this for a moment. if you're doing what the op is accusing people of doing, the motivation would be to make big profit. so if you have to pay 5% fee up front with the possibility of making big profit, would the 5% fee stop you? even if you relist an item 10 times, a 5% fee up front rather on the back end is going to be negligible compared to the profit you could make.

I also doubt that people actually do this where they sit around all day manipulating the market. and even if there are people that do it, I cant imagine its a rampant problem that requires something like moving the listing fee up front. all you're going to do is hurt the poor.

Lexsunfire, if you listed an item 10 times and paid 5% of the list price as a fee, that means you've already spent about 50% of the gil you originally wanted to obtain by selling the item in the first place.

There's no big profit to be had if people constantly relist while paying a penalty. Which is why they will instead accept the average price as the price they should sell their item at.

There are posts of people admitting to relisting prices specifically to crash markets and then monopolize them. I even quoted one of them in my first post.

This change doesn't hurt the poor, casual players. It actually doesn't hurt anyone, since the value of all items would increase and thus the time needed to farm items to raise money would be dramatically reduced.

Right now it is actually possible to spend more money on repairing the gear that is damaged while gathering the items, than the money you'll make selling those items you gathered. That's a broken economy system.

You might want to rethink your math. relisting 10 times at 5% will not be about 50% of the gil you originally wanted to obtain. i can tell you the math equation you're looking for is not 10*5. check your math, then we can talk about how effective your proposed listing fee would be. and i'm sure a handful of people on the forums admitting to crashing markets means this is a rampant problem.

is that a sign of a broken economy? I spend more money obtaining the ingredients I need to make something than I will in selling my final product. does that mean the economy is broken?

To achieve OP's goal, simply disallow withdraw any listing. You will have to buy it back by yourself (so it is still 5% lost).
And it will increase market trades as many players wish.. (every re-listing becomes a trade) ^^;

Seriously, by paying fee upfront, if a poor player luckily got an expansive item (ie. a blue bird), he may not have the fee to list it.
And if the market price drops after he listed the item, he may need to wait his listing to be expired. (In this case will you refund 5% fee to him?)
If a poor guy cannot make use of the MB as a rich guy, it might be another issue of "it'll never be a balanced and fair economy" as caption.

No no no no and again - NO!!! This has been discussed here ad absurdum and NEVER was proved to be an effective or improving the stability of the game's market (and argument that "most other MMOs use this" is not a prove). As mentioned already above - nothing stops YOU form updating the prices every 15 seconds if you feel "opressed" by undercutters and - if you can't play 24/7 - stop complaining. Thank God SE is not bulding to this nonsense requests about listing fees - just give up and let it be - it works fine as it is. I also don't like being undercut nor I have time and will to change the sell prices constantly but I'm pretty sure that introducing the fees will NOT improve anything, it will simply make people sick of selling stuff at all.

It is a Market Board not an Auction House. I do believe seller gets taxed and buyers gets taxed already. I don't think another fee would be wanted by some. What bothers me is that someone who lists after you ends up being on the top of the list even if they match your price. Then there's always the HQ undercutters who also undercut the NQ's just to sell their 1 HQ item. In that case I sometimes just snatch up their cheap HQ and relist it at "normal" price.

On all the servers I played in it I was so surprised that even materia prices are droping , I used to sell save aim materia with 20k+ but because of ppl keep undercuting it now its worth 3k- , since I spent alot of time SBing that price kinda worthless .

I saw items worth 5+ gil if ypu sold them to NPC but players sell it for 1gill LOL .

I play on balmung, and I feel that you might have been slightly mistaken ^^;

when I say 100k, I mean collectively (5 gained materia from gathering can equate to anywhere from 15k if you're unlucky to over 100k if you get a few lvl4s or the really popular lvl3s)

Really looking forward to after 2.2's patch goes in~ high level gear (guessing Ilvl50+ is going to spiritbond faster~ so adding a lvl1 materia+it being a HQ item will drastically speed up SB time = more profit<3)

1. Nobody is being punished. You already pay a fee when items sell, but the fee should be for listing the item. The fee structure is designed wrong.

2. Not everyone can move to the same servers, as they have population caps.

3. The problem is with the game not having listing fees.

And before you insult people, you might want to not indicate you have no life outside of playing FF XIV. These games are meant to be a hobby, not the purpose of your existence.

Firstly: The forum states WHICH server you are on~
Secondly: The values I said were specific to my server~ You need to check your own damn server~
Thirdly: Insulting people by claiming we have no life/camp the boards is going to backfire spectacularly~

See, here's the inconsistency that implies you either play more than you claim to, or you don't do as well as you claim to.

You can't watch the market prices unless you play alot. This is because the history page only shows the most recent transactions; for items that sell constantly, it'll only be the last few hours of that day.

Or there are players such as myself that are better than you and actually don't need to take an hour for...1 item~

Hey, here's an idea. Buy up all the 1 gil items. Take it over to the NPC. Vendor it. Repeat. ???. Profit. There's no need for a % cut of the sale, because it doesn't stop anyone from undercutting. They just take a smaller profit and still undercut you. Get used to it. Just take a look at the abominable market that is TOR to see this in action.

I mentioned before, but I've done this. It doesn't stabilize the market; within a few hours there will be tons of items undercut at 1 gil again. All it ends up doing is wasting my time, since on the PS3 I have to constantly reopen the stupid window for that item after buying it.

It doesn't make any money since most items sell for 1 gil to begin with. That's why it's a waste of time.

Listing fees has been discussed for many years. It does not balance an economy. It actually tips the scales in favor of rich and huge commodity players to an epic proportion.

If your looking for balance, listing fees is a no no.

@OP, I still think Rein-Yagami's posts are going over your head. Not surprising. Here's what I do. I stockpile hi-volume stuff on my retainers to sell. Everyday for about 30 minutes, I go through and check the current market values and what they have been going for. For the most part, I know the maximum and minimum values each item will sell for. If they are going on the high side at the moment I check, I will put up a maximum of 3 for sale. Any more and I feel like I have diluted my chance to sell. Plus there are other items I sell. Variety is key. This can be done on ANY server and not just Balmung lol. Doing this, I can make anywhere for 50k-200k from stuff I did last month. And it's just a continuous cycle.

@Listing Fees-If people are going to bottom out a market to control it, listing fees will do nothing to stop them. It will only make them bottom it out quicker to avoid less listing fees. And since they are actively trying to control a market, they will gladly pay the listing fees, because they have the gil to pay it and they want to keep their market. Other people who may not have the gil will be less likely inclined to try selling in that market when it recovers from getting bottomed out. I also think listing fees will inflate prices, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. If you are a seller, you want to recover your money. If you are a buyer, you have to pay more.

I'd love to hear how changing the post sale tax on the seller to a pre-sale list fee of the same amount would not help balance things out a bit. Saying something like this doesn't really mean anything without giving a bit of explanation. Quite frankly, nothing anyone against the OP's suggestion has said has made any good, logical point on why it's a bad idea, beyond "that doesn't sound good, I don't like it." Some people may be thinking they would be getting double charged to sell. That's not how it would work. It's not how it worked in FFXI and I would bet its not how it worked in WoW. It would and should be just 1 charge, but up front.

Would it fix the problem completely? Of course not. People with lots of cash will always be able to buy up all of a particular item up for sale to corner a market (which brings RMT into the discussion). But the vast majority of players will put items up for sale at a price, maybe undercut a bit, maybe try to get a bit more if supply is low. But if they are paying 5k to list a 100k item, they aren't going to sit at the Market Board, constantly checking to see if someone put up the item for a bit cheaper. People would be more inclined to have a bit of patience to wait those 7 days items stay for sale on your retainer. Maybe you decrease the time they stay up. I think it was 3 or 4 days in FFXI. Heck, you could refund the listing fee if the seller waits the full amount of time rather than taking it down prematurely. That seems pretty fair to me, actually. But this allows the vast majority of the market (see above about very rich players and RMT) to operate more on supply and demand.

And to anyone arguing that's not how it works in real life. First of all, in retail, yes it is. A distributor that wants to sell a food item at a Walmart or a Target or whatever has to pay a "slot fee" to get their product a spot on the shelving. Second of all, even in markets where this doesn't apply, I argue you can't compare the game economy to real life. Mostly just because people obviously care much much more about their real life money than virtual cash in an mmo. People aren't willing to totally hamstring themselves financially to make a quick sale in real life. You don't see two gas stations on opposite corners of each other constantly slashing their gas prices to make sure they have the lower price. They understand thats not good for business. They usually have the exact same price. In an MMO, a vast majority don' have that business sense. Many simply don't care too much. Especially in a game where in game currency doesn't get you much beyond purely vanity items like an expensive minion or housing. But thats another discussion. Many may value inventory space more than a few more gil, so they sell stuff super cheap to get rid of stuff. The point being that the economically uneducated and apathetic need some help and limits from above to keep the economy healty

OP this is not a good idea, your intentions are well placed but as one with a good amount of gil on hand I can tell you this idea would only favor me more and make it even harder for ppl with barely any gil to keep up on the market board.

for example: I post 5 items at 99 stack for x amount of gil, someone else who wants to compete on the market with me post 7 items at 99 stack for less than mine.
me having plenty of gil on hand decide ill just undercut this person to put my items back at the lowest price should this keep up my opponent will simply burn themselves out before I even feel a dent in the millions of gil I have saved, thus I maintain my market and can begin to make back any lost gil x5 within the same day effectively losing nothing and eliminating another potential competitor.

fact is this idea favors the rich and screws the poor even more not the best way to go about trying to balance things out!

Fact of the matter is, until about 3 weeks ago I didn't particularly care about massing a large amount of gil~

I run a tiny FC (myself and a irl friend+1 ingame friend)~ we got to lvl6 and can now buy a FC house (Smallest is almost 2m on balmung)

over the course of 2 weeks, playing for 2-4 hours per day I made over a million gil~ It's really not difficult guys

Shards sell fairly good, small prices but you can sell alot of them at once~
Materia sells fairly well, Gathering and Crafting sells better on balmung atm
Do the DD dungeon(lvl44) it has green dungeon loot that can be sold (only dungeon I'm aware of past halatali that has this)
Do your Duty finder Roulettes every day~ it may not sound like much, but getting the daily bonus each day will start to add up.

Hope people realise that gil harvesting isn't some dark magic that's sucking the lives of every "fair" player dry~ because it really isn't

Very true. However, people with a lot money, the time and the will to do this are in a vast minority to the amount of people just trying to sell their stuff normally. So while, like I said, rich people will always be able to corner markets (which is no different from now- a richer player with lots of money is still going to have the advantage over Joe Lalafell with 150k gil to his name trying to break into the rich guys mirror apple market. But for the economy as a whole, for the thousands of items that aren't being cornered, a listing fee would really help stabilize prices.

No, what would help is the game refusing to let you sell items on the markets for less than what a vendor would give you~
