Olympic games event- why not?

Greetings. There are some standard events in every mmorpg and in this game too. Today starts Olympic Games in Sochi (Russia). Why developers didnt make any event connected with this awesome sport holiday? Maybe it is not to late create some? Thank you

I think this is a great idea, but it should be filled with fun little mini games. Perhaps load up something onto the duty finder server, and allow people to queue up for the game with party members or just random strangers to compete against each other, or maybe some games where you team up together.

Well there is the Gold Saucer coming sometime in the future, which will be featuring minigames to play, but whether you can actually play against other players isn't known. Until then, there's always PvP which is kind of like a competition (even if it is fighting). ;)

The spirit of the games THIS year is ruined by the atmosphere of where it is held.
I have no problem with Olympic mini-sport events in FFXIV, and it would have nothing to do with Russia so thats a bigger plus!

Of course many of you are right, FFXIV and the Olympic games themselves have nothing to do with gays. However, any informed person knows of the atrocities targeting the LGBT community in that country. That IS an issue, i don't care what your sexuality is.

So, YES to FFXIV olympic events! No to Sochi 2014!

I don't quite know why but I have the urge to scream, "Wolverines!"

An Olympic event would be cool, but it is way too late for them to add one now. Next time, maybe.

I have to agree as well. I hate to be one of the folks who wants to make it politically-charged, but honestly, the stuff that's going on is pretty upsetting/scary to me.

Why it will most likely not happen, the Olympic committee holds an iron grip on everything related to it. If Square wanted to do an event based on it, they would have to pay a pretty large amount to allow it. The closest you could get without that is like what Blizzard did with the Chinese dragon, "Spirit of Competition" was the name they gave it. If you only skirt the topic, not use the name outright. That said, i could see Square doing it for the one that is in Japan coming up.

I didn't realise that at all, but of course it makes sense, just like the Super Bowl or any other huge competition is so bound by red tape it hurts. That's too bad :(

I think this would be awesome! ^_^

There could be a fate where Al-mingo extremists try to disrupt the games, which are being held in the Garlean controlled resort city of Silvertear Falls and PC's would have to thwart the insurgents by diffusing bombs and stuff!

Then in another fate PC's could join the Garlean riot police in cracking down on anti-Garlean protesters who have come to the games to defend their right to believe in primals.

How cool would that be???? xD

Pretty much this. You better believe NBC paid a hefty licensing fee to be able to broadcast the games.

This is not a political thread- this thread is just an IDEA. I played in a small anime mmorpg and there was an event during 2012 Olympic games, special sport costumes in the in-game store. It was nice. Is it so popular to try to find different points of the words? There is ONE point- idea of an in-game event, idea for the developers to make different, unusual events. Just read the words- dont try to see something between the word lines

I'd be happy if I never saw another FATE event again. FATEs are fun, but they get EXTREMELY boring when every single new event is a FATE or has a FATE that needs to be done for it. It's just making the devs look lazy.

Valentine event was a welcome change from FATE-heavy/FATE-oriented events one after the other.

We have, we answered your question with minimal mention of the "other issues". the last few posts were about why it couldn't be done but we would still enjoy it.

And you can just chalk me up to a Russian-law hater. I'm sure there are plenty of awesome, pro-equal rights russians out there.

You also can't hope to create a thread about this with the current climate in Russia and not expect someone to bring up the reason why the olympics are being overshadowed by political issues this year

Well, for one thing, it would be for the Olympic committee to approve, and that organization is very strict. For example, businesses around the venues (like in London last time) are forbidden by law from using words like "gold" or "summer" in their advertising, athletes are forbidden from mentioning any brand even in their tweets, etc. (#rule40)

I see, but what about in-game itself. In what jurisdiction the in-game space is? Japanese, Canadian? And how any law can forbid to use any word such as GOLD or SUMMER? Yes, there is the world Olympic Organization, but this organization can not make rules or laws on the territory of different independent countries and can not forbid to use something, connected with Olympic games

The Olympics is a protected brand/trademark, just like Iron Man or Coca Cola. SE would need to license it before they could put it in the game. Even if SE just made a "5 rings" symbol of the Eorzean cities they could face a lawsuit. The jurisdiction would probably be Japan, because "in-game" is a product created by a Japanese company in Japan.

As for "how can a law forbid...?", that's what my links were for, to show it has already been done. Also, Tokyo will host the Olympic summer games in 2020. They would be directly under these very strict rules set by the Olympics and enforced by Japan/Tokyo.

Edit: OP: It's an interesting idea, but it might be a whole game patch worth of work and be a huge distraction from the regular game. Also, I hope all goes well for the Olympics in Sochi.

Licensing issues aside, my issue with an Olympics type event is about who competes and who the teams are.
The teams would have to be the Grand Companies.
If the players are competing, then I think we need mini-game like events .. so maybe after Gold Saucer is added. Also the games would only be available to players registered with a GC.
If the players aren't competing and just facilitating organizing the games and we get cut scenes with the GCs competing .. that could work but seems less fun.

i like the winter olympics even over the summer, and im not even into watching sports. considering i dont like any of the in game events, this would be one exception, so i feel with the op /disappointed.

You're wasting your time feeding a troll I'm afraid. In his mind there is no other alternative in regard to his "issues", he's just baiting you at this point. As for myself, I enjoyed watching the opening ceremonies, and hope they go well. For the record, I'm well aware of the controversies surrounding Sochi, and I'm not saying that the issues have no merit, but it seems petty to use an event that champions the spirit of fair competition as political leverage.

There has to be a way to surface a hockey rink in that far west canyon of Coerthas. Then... round-robin time! And each 5-sentient team has to play at least one Roegadyn and one Lalafell. :)

No. We don't need every real life event to be represented in game form. It's bad enough they have a valentines event... And let's be honest Winter Olympics is like the Olympics retarded step sister.

Hey, don't hate on winter olympics. There's no argument that summer has the much slower (speed) events. Plus snowboarding. The only event that requires failing a particular type of drug test to participate. ;) Personally I like seeing unpopular sport that requires skill and athletics. I'm not a fan of basketball or golf as events, which summer has.

Though figure skating (judging, at least) is absolutely corrupt. Any "sport" where getting a higher score than the 2nd place person results in a worse place finish than getting a lower score needs to be put to a swift and permanent death. I actually watched them explain this a few olympics back.

Oh, no need to surface that Coerthas ice. Keep it pebbled and let's do some curling round-robin instead. :)

Dont compare such things. Olympic games just every 2 years

While I could see them doing a string of quests for the olympics, I would rather not, as it has nothing to do with Eorzea. If Eorzea had sports (other than PVP) I could see them adding in Eorzea Olympics.

Of course, I would hate to have to carry a torch from the Ifrit Aetheryte to Corthas to initiate the games...

A few of my FC members would have been arrested :P

An Olympic event would be cool. Blizzard did this a few times and you could earn an Olympic related pet in their games.

I prefer events that put highlight on the FF universe instead of the regular one.
