Can we please stop giving melee bad stigma?

<rant>It really sucks how every time I log in I wanna go do something like ex primals or some turn of coil, and I open up the party finder only to see a dozen or more parties for all the content I need, restricted to *RANGED* dps only; no melee allowed.

Seriously, what bs is this? Why is the entire populace just outcasting melee dps just because they can? It's depressing enough to see that I wonder why the hell we even have melee jobs in this game in the first place.

I'm not even sure where to post this, because I can't tell if it's because tons of bad melee players are running around permeating the stereotype that all melee suck and die to everything because they can't dodge, or if the rest of the world is at fault for thinking this way.</rant>

I just want to have fun guys, on jobs that are fun to play... isn't that why we play this game?

1) Open Party Finder and hit "Search for Members".
2) Put whatever restrictions YOU want on the party.
3) ???
4) Profit!


Maybe other people find it more fun to play with ranged dps?
Is what you find to be fun somehow more relevant than what they find to be fun?
At any rate, the solution is simple. Make your own groups. :cool:

Actually, I think I've never seen one for ranged only on Excal period though I have seen that before when I was on Hyperion.

Semi-true as a solution, though I've encountered my fair share of people that won't join parties that have a melee in it already too.

Only time I've ever seen this come up is when a group already has two (or three) melee and don't want a third (or fourth).... but the same goes vice versa as well.

Generally the only class specific consideration I see anymore is groups with three random DPS demanding a bard for the fourth slot.

Much more rarely I see "no smn" groups. But I don't think I've seen any 'no melee' stuff since 2.1.

Though I do agree that it's pretty dumb to avoid melee. The skill of the player matters more than the class. All content in the game has been done with full melee groups even, so the stigma is pretty baseless.

why bother risk getting "bad melee" when you can get "bad ranged" and still win quite easily? bad melee means you're 3 manning Garuda EX, bad healers (or melee) means melee has a hard time in Ifrit. all ranged, even if bad players, removes some mechanics that would make groups fail.

it's a risk vs reward. content can be done in 4 melee and maybe even done quicker. but it's much safer, easier, and may be just as quick with 4 ranged DPS in certain content (Garuda EX, Ifrit EX). there is no fight in the game that REQUIRES the (marginally) better DPS that melee provides.

just like how gear doesn't equal skill but you'd take an i80 pug over an i70 one. if i had 2 people wanting to join my Garuda EX group, a melee and ranged, i would take the ranged. why risk melee instagib WW (exaggeration) when the ranged can safely pew pew away?

The problem isnt with the melees but rather that a lot of mechanics can be trivialized by picking an all ranged group. So from a tank or healer perspective it doesnt seem worth it to get a melee, when 4 ranged still deal enough damage and equal less work for them.

In content where mechanics arent biased, like say titan ex, i very rarely see people not wanting to bring a melee.

Its probally because most drgs and monks are idiots who die/sit in aoe's, don't pay any attention to whats going on around them, and just take way to much easly avoidable damage. Most of the time I hear of a bad coil run on my server its almost always the drg or monk being a mana sink due to having to res them repeadly since they get 1-2 shoted by anything and tend to not dodge aoes too well. If you want melee to not have bad stigma get the melee dps playerbase to stop sucking so hard and it'd go away. As a tank myself and as a whm I am lving up, i'd much prefer all ranged dps over melee just for the fact there is much less risk of them dying to stuff, and for my healer, its alot less work for me. When I am on my bard I always facepalm when I see drgs/monks repeadly die to aoe's, all it takes is a little paying attention to avoid it but they seem unable to do it. I personally blame melee's complacated rotations/mechanics. Ranged dps rotations are much much simpler.

This is pretty much the reason why. Anything a melee can do a ranged can do without the necessary and complex dancing around the boss. Also have to take into account things like when bosses target a random player other than the tank for an AoE. If that target is a healer or a ranged they need to move to avoid it and maybe one other person as well. If a melee is the target then ALL melee and most likely the tank have to stop pretty much everything they're doing and run to avoid it. Also there's no positioning requirements for ranged to deal damage at max potential unlike melee that perpetually have to move from behind the mob to the flank and vice versa to be at max potential. Every MMO battles this problem, there's no real way to avoid it. Why bring 4 melee and their flaws when 4 ranged can do the same damage if not more and be safer about it as well.

Wait, that doesn't make any sense. It might almost make sense if by "ranged" you specifically mean "BRD," but it doesn't make sense as soon as you include casters. First, it's extremely rare that something targeting the melee dps will also be targeting the tank. Second, melee dps can still dps while dodging, so there's minimal to no loss of dps when they dodge. And that's not even counting the fact that different melee players might be at different parts of their rotation, and thus you might only even see one of them being targeted at a time.

Now, what you're not factoring in for ranged players is that they often have an area they have to stack in. Which means anything targeting one of them is just as likely to target several of them as it is in the melee scenario. This wouldn't be an issue, but it interrupts casting for BLM and SMN. Granted, it's fine for BRD, but I refuse to join a party with 4 BRDs.

As for your assertion that "anything a melee can do a ranged can do without dancing around the boss," no. . .just no. Let me see a BLM or SMN maintain their rotation while dodging. And if you think ranged can maintain optimal dps while dodging, good luck finding four bards who can outdamage competent MNKs and DRGs.

Is this a joke? In the what, 4 or 5 months I have been playing, no MNK or DRG has EVER outdamaged my BRD/BLM/SMN on ANY fight, even with ilvl advantages (my ranged all being i86 at the moment, vs i90 MNKs/DRGs). I consider party lucky if they land a MNK or DRG who even comes close to even with LB added to their DMG.

In my experienced a bad ranged beats a bad melee, a good melee beats a bad to average ranged, but no MNK/DRG comes close to a Good Ranged, never seen it happen.

Edit -- I've been sitting here thinking, I tend to try to elaborate when I so strongly disagree with a statement, but I've come at quite a loss on this one. So I'll just ask what fights are you using as the basis for your statement? Even with asking that there's very few fights that are so melee unfriendly or AOE heavy that they can't be at top or at the very least near the top.

Ive not seen this on Cerberus.

"Must know tactics!"

By seeing all the arguement against melee DPS I'm lead to believe that if they do our jobs greatly and stay out of aoes while maintaining our DPS then they are superior players for having learned harder mechanics while staying alive. If they have it so tough because of so many anti-melee mechanics then being a melee DPS could bring about better player skills, memory, and hand-eye coordination which makes a damn good person to have on a team. I see no fault in this and will consider us all equals.

Every fight in the game, from low level content up to and through T5. And I'm quite certain ive played with "good" melee's lol, I can see the DPS difference between my Coil Group/FC Melees vs the random server melee population (my Coil/FC members being much more capable), let alone the general disparity between high damaging melees and low damaging ones in PUGs. Regardless, pretty much all I do these days is spam EX primals after doing T1-5 Mondays, I parse everything, and as I have said, no melee DPS have ever outdamaged me, or any other good ranged DPS ive seen in any fight, be it Sastasha, Twintania, or anything in between.

*BTW, I don't hate melee DPS at all lol, I don't mind having them in a group (I do get slightly annoyed/sad face when there are 2 or more in a group - if for no other reason that the odds of more than one of them being decent are astronomically low). I'm also not saying that good melee DPS cant do decent damage, but being top? not in any fight currently in game. There is no fight where a melee can have 100% uptime (parsers track this btw), whether it be for 5 seconds to dodge eruptions, or an extended period of time, like dodging bomb batters and etc. On average, active time in parsers shows ranged at 96% plus (accounting for bosses jumping etc), vs melees generally 10% or more less.

If a melee could get the same active time on a mob that ranged do, then I'm sure they would be king, with all the enhancement they receive intended to make up for this disparity in uptime on targets. However, this is not the case, and as far as I've seen the buffs to their potency and such just does not over come this downtime.

There is such a stigma towards melee DPS because the truth is, there are many more bad ones then there are good, and its painfully obvious when one is bad, because not using their rotations properly, in addition to downtime = terrible deeps, which goes back to the ranged being the "safe" choice, a shitty ranged still has way more uptime and will thus do more dmg than a shitty melee.



I only posted because of the guy saying "Good luck finding any bards that can out DPS a MNK or DRG" ...when im my experience its the complete opposite

Giant red circles of death aren't picky about who all they affect, but they will never affect the tank if they only target ranged players. In an all melee party there's a much higher risk of the tank taking avoidable AoE damage from not being able to move in time.

Scathe, Ruin II, and Swiftcast+anything were designed as "movement" fillers to provide the same negligible losses. They may not be optimal, but they're something and better than letting a GCD go empty due to movement. Even then you only move out of the AoE and stop to continue casting so you might miss 1 or maybe 2 casts in extreme situations, but that's why those instant spells were put in the game.

Stacking with ranged isn't usually a normal tactic in any other MMO unless it's needed to handle a mechanic (like splitting damage) because of the risk of multiple people dying to the same targeted AoE. They may be relatively close, but ranged usually stay spread out in every other MMO when possible for that reason alone. Whereas melee are ALWAYS near each other because mechanically they have to be and are always at risk of being killed by the same AoE.

By "dancing around the boss" I don't mean dodging mechanics I mean the perpetual movement around the boss from back to flank in order to do max damage. Casters and Bard only require line of sight and being stationary to be able to deal max damage and one of those doesn't really affect Bard. Could 4 Bards outdamage competent Monks? Probably not since it would mean no limit break, but without that I don't see why not assuming they're just as competent and well geared.

Depends on the players behind the jobs, put My BRD/SMNx4 in a group, vs 4 of the highest DPS MNKs or DRGs ive even encountered in a group, I guarantee the combined amount of Damage my ranged are ahead of the melee by is equal to or ,much more likely, greater than the melee LB.

At the end of the day, Im not trying to attack Melee, if you really do out DPS good ranged players, that is truly awesome! I HOPE to come across some on my server that do someday, then maybe I'll play my MNK and DRG =p. I try to be open minded, so I dont disbelieve that what you say is true, I just find it hard, that after all these months, all these hundreds of dungeons and trials and coils, from friends to fc members to pugs to jumping in a spot with the "top world first everything" FCs and their "1337" players, Ive just somehow not encountered the many awesome melee dps, or that they just dont exist on my server ha. Crazy coincidence or cruel twist of fate, I dont know.

I hope to find them someday though! Their Drop rate seems to be the same as nightmare whistle for me though - 0 =(

Yes, you win the argument because you said kthnxbai? I call BS that anyone on your server makes all melee DPS parties for anything lol (whereas people actually do make all ranged groups, very successfully I might add).

Since you pointed out TEX, between melee moving to dodge landslides, plumes, having to move away from titan for bombs (while ranged are still DPSing), in you experience the melee do more DPS than the ranged?

If so, that's pretty awesome, but something I would have to see to believe.

What kind of DPS do you put out on a given fight? I'm just wondering, as everything I've heard (and seen) has been just the opposite for BRD - that they tend to have lower DPS than most classes, particularly if they are forced to sing for extended periods.

Not at all, I've seen lots of BRDs do poor damage sometimes, I have no idea how they are playing their characters. Ive never found Ballad to be an issue (usually its damage reduction is mitigated by DPS CDs anyway", it's simply stops me from leading by a mile, but has never stopped me from topping DPS charts. For example Garuda EX, I just ballad during inner circle/plume phases, always have at least BFB and usually more CDS to pop, so doesn't hinder DPS at all. Same on Titan EX, usually just a little battlevoiced towards the end, and Ifrit EX just Ballad when he jumps until after rushes, and then battle voiced after final nails if necessary. T5 after adds till conflag phase, during divebombs, and then a battle voice towards end has needed during later dread knights or final phase. Even when people die and have to be rezzed, or healers die and I have to play ballad more, it has still never dropped my DPS below other classes.

I honestly dont know what hinders a lot of bards, I just know the way I play mine and quite a few others I know find ourselves to have Top DPS, quite effortlessly.

This all seems so ridiculous, some how we all have different experiences on different servers lol? We are all speaking from what we've seen and know from our ingame time so I dont doubt what anyone says. Wish some of us with differing views were on the same server so we could put our performance where our post are and see whats what!

Saving dps cooldowns for phases during which you are singing a song that reduces your damage is a dps loss. And you don't out-dps any melee of fair skill. Just...you don't..no..

On topic: I'm not sure why people would ever want to exclude melee other than already having too many. Yes, it's true that a bad melee is more of a hindrance than a bad ranged, but at the same time, I noticed ranged don't seem to pay as much attention and get hit more often by lethal moves when they do get targeted. If you're seeing groups that exclude melee, you're probably better off finding a different group anyways. Those groups are led by the same people who stacked bards for turn 2 (though nowadays they do enrage strat [which I guess is okay if you don't have a static and are forced to pug]).

Oh, do share some parses. I personally love it when people use their personal experiences as a full measure for stacking jobs versus another. You must have a lot of faith in the melee you've partied with being fully competent and proficient with their jobs.

A competent MNK or DRG will far exceed a competent ranged in most content in the game.

For starters, why don't you start by showing me a parse of your ranged hitting 300+ DPS on a Twintania clear.

I am no dps expert, but I though it is common knowledge that after the latest patch, monk and dragoon are the top dps, while bard are the weakest ones since they have support abilities and constant damage. Of course it depends on a fight but that is the situation generally. It makes sense since melee does not have the advantages of ranged dps. Just look at the abilities and buffed GL and it should be obvious. If xEscaflownex could share some actual data it would be nice.

Lol, when did I ever say I save my DPS cooldown, I simply said they are general up, IE, coming OFF CD about the time Im singing songs, and yes, yes I do, all of them.

It wasn't really any different in 2.0. A competent MNK could still far exceed any ranged in single target. Only difference then was DRG wasn't as good.

As far as DPS ceilings go, BRD had the lowest and still remains the lowest. The high mobility of the job, however, lends to them being able to perform more consistently and reliably in content. Where content that requires a lot of movement, like extreme primals, can seriously inhibit the performance of a BLM, a BRD will barely be affected.

In my experienced a bad ranged beats a bad melee, a good melee beats a bad to average ranged, but no MNK/DRG comes close to a Good Ranged, never seen it happen.

Well, that depends on the given content. While in pretty much any case, they shouldn't be beating a DRG or a MNK, but they can often times beat BLMs or SMNs.

The thing about BRD is, yes they do have the lowest DPS ceiling, but they are also the least hindered by content mechanics. BRD is able to perform at near-full optimal capacity more than any job. That's why it makes sense that they were given the lowest DPS cap.

On the flipside, melee have the greatest risk associated with them and therefore they have the highest DPS cap.

BLM are kings of AoE destruction. On the flipside they have poor mobility and average single target DPS.

SMN are flexible and provide great support, but most of their potential lies in the ability to multi-DoT.

The only time i have seen no melee is for ifrit x. And due to fight mechanics, as a healer i understand why....

Really? I'd think Garuda X more than Ifrit X. Titan X and Ifrit X are quite fine with melee.

That being said, when it comes to PF/DF, I concede that it can be difficult to trust random players you don't know to have the competence to dodge mechanics well on melee...
