Classes

Actions will undergo major revisions, along with both the underlying mechanics and conditions.

By major revisions, not only do we mean the tweaking of effects and potency of existing actions - we will work from the ground up to redesign and reassign actions based on clearly identified class roles.

We will also make a number of changes as part of our reexamination of how actions are equipped and the character requirements for doing so. First, actions learned by each class will be set to the action bar by default when playing as that class. Also, we will be making some actions settable on any class, while other "class-defining" actions obtained at higher ranks will be usable only by that class.

Jobs

The job system - that series-defining trademark - will be implemented in FINAL FANTASY XIV (details such as specific jobs TBA). Quests to unlock each job will become available once you have reached a certain rank in the corresponding class.
Rather than being advanced versions of classes, we would like players to think of jobs as specialized playing styles optimized for partying. While playing as a particular job will render you unable to equip certain actions of other classes, you will be compensated with access to exclusive actions, which can be acquired through quests.

In practice, players will find the existing classes effective when playing solo or in certain party setups. Jobs, however, will shine in party situations where specific skill sets are demanded. Now, you didn’t hear this from me, but there are also rumors circulating that quests for obtaining job-exclusive equipment are also in the pipes.
We at the development team are currently hard at work on the job system, and expect to have details to share with you soon.

As clearly identified class roles, you aren't going to limit the roles to 'DPS', 'Tank' and 'Healing' are you?

What is happening to the 'pick up this type of item and you become that class' idea?

Do we have to complete quests to unlock the normal classes? Or is this only talking about the 'Advanced classes'?

As an example, am I correct to think that Conjurer's advanced classes would be Black/White mage?

=O While the 'Advanced' classes are more specialized, I really hope the original classes remain useful =)

The whole make your own class thing will still be there, they'll be more for solo or casual parties. It says so in the last paragraph.

What I got from the blueprint was that the classes will still be there and still be useful. However, what its also saying is in a party situation you can bring a class such as conjurer to heal, but it will probably be more beneficial for the entire party to have the job "whitemage" instead. (not emphasizing there is a whitemage job yet just using it as an example.)

So the classes are still there and still have a use, but it might be the maximum benefit for a party to use a job over a class. Advancing into a specific job might help a party more. So doing said quests or what ever required to unlock jobs would be a good idea if you plan party play along with leveling classes.

Jobs more for high end stuff such as dungeons and end game things. Casual parties can be leveling parties. I really would dislike this game if ppl started requiring "jobs" for lvl up parties. End game idm, but leveling should be fun (where most ppl make end game a job, and not that much fun )

I'm seriously hoping Jobs are not limited to what class unlocked them. It doesn't sound like they are but its not specified either.

Also I'm wondering if jobs have their own level or if they are simply a Title that grants bonuses and extra skills.

=D Ahh, okay so Conjurer is sort of the 'Red Mage' with it's own twist. But if you just want to heal/deal damage then you can switch to an advanced role?

I would hate to HAVE to pick Advanced roles for dungeons =[

I understand that you would need a 'healer' but it would be nice to have someone who can heal as well as deal damage =)

You could probably take on a dungeon while being a class, but it'll probably be more beneficial to do them if you have a specific job.

I think it will be like this
1- you can solo with pug ( because you can use other classes skill such as cure, stoneskin, shockspike...etc )

2- you can join party with pug but you will be better as monk
monk = you will no longer able to use cure or stoneskin but you will be able to use strong action.
( who care since in party you should have con or thm right? )

Basically, how I see what they explained is that the jobs will be more specialized in the sense of less customization by taking other classes abilities while getting specific ones.
This explains why the classes will be more usefull for solo play (you can use many more skills from others classes) while jobs will be more for party (lancers won't be able to use cure of shell/protect, for example) for a specific role.

I think you meant it the opposite way around, as jobs will probably specialise better in their chosen streams, so jobs will be more useful than the class. (unless I'm getting confused. o.o)

I have that same question... I like that jobs are unlocked via quests, and that exclusive skills and gear are unlocked that way as well... I do hope that jobs have their own level tied to them, sure it's something else to level, but it's also something else to level.

My hope is that when playing as a job you get JP (job points) and can use those points to further enhance that job, but we will see. Ether way, this is very exciting stuff. :)

I just hope they had enough time to plan this through and implement it well. What will irk me the most is if the storylines/cutscenes for the new job quests are bland and uninteresting, like most of them were in XI, the ones pre-ToAU at least, or the more recently added quests in XIV.

Ya my mistake there thanks for the catch. I think in party situation it will be more beneficial to use a Job over a class.

I'm guessing that where your class is defined by the weapon you have equipped, your job can be defined by the skills you are limited to/have set. For example, you could have an Archer/White Mage (FFIV anyone?) who can heal, while dealing ranged damage, a gla/Dark Knight, or a mrd/Drk who can do high damage at the expense of his/her life, or a pgl/Ninja who can use poison claws and cast ninjutsu.
