Duty Finder tip: How to get groups FASTER via Duty Finder:

I am reposting this due to the number of complaint threads I am seeing, again, from folks who are unaware that they are inadvertently causing their own huge delays in getting duty finder groups:

Select all four language buttons (JEDF) at the top-right corner of the Duty Finder window.


I'm surprised it took me and other folks to realize this, but there was something we were NOT doing until this weekend, which was actually preventing us from getting groups in Duty Finder more frequently, and it has to do with the server we play on.

The language setting in the Duty Finder window!

I and my Free Company are english-only speakers on a Japanese Server. So, naturally, we had our default language set to "E" only, for english. Well, it turns out this was actually hindering our ability to get groups in Duty Finder.

Once we started checking each language box, JEDF, our time spent in the Duty Finder dropped significantly. It didn't dawn on us until now that we were actually restricting ourselves from getting into groups where everyone else only had the "J" language selected. Sure, once we changed it to where we selected all languages we got into many more groups - and most of them didn't speak a lick of English, it really didn't matter much for duties we knew how to complete anyways. We've cut-and-pasted a simple phrase from Google Translator to let the rest of the group know we are English-only, a simple greeting, and if they need to give us instructions to please say our name first so we know to copy their message and translate it via Google's Translator.

Anyways. I hope this tip helps other folks. It was very surprising to us to see how significant of a difference it makes when you select ALL languages in Duty Finder.

Edit: As others noted in this thread, for best results, make sure you know the Duty fairly well before using this method to get groups faster in Duty Finder. While people should not be offended over others joining a Duty Finder group and speaking another language (it promotes socializing), some people are just downright mean about it. I haven't noticed this on the Japanese servers, but from the sounds of it, the NA/EU servers seem to have an issue over language barriers. Use of the in-game Auto-Translator is good for overcoming these, or do what I am my pals do: cut-and paste to Google Translate for more complex issues.

If people know the dungeons, what to do, and how to target during a pull, there's really not much you need to communicate. I just did a run through hat and I don't think any of the people in the group spoke english, or at least they never responded to me. Conjurer ran the whole instance with cleric stance up even after I asked him if he knew it was on he didn't respond.

Well, maybe for few low-lvl dungeons it's fine, but as the dungeon lvl goes up, more and more "accidents" tends to happen and the need for communication arises sometimes.


There use to be a thread in JP forum demanding for more "strict enforcement of language selection in Duty Finder" due to above reasons.

Well, it's important for people to know that the Duty Finder is restricted by language selection, and thereby people are creating their own really long wait times if they don't select other languages, especially the primary language of that server. I imagine D/F (German/French) people wait EVEN LONGER than 2-3 hours on a JP server, if they don't select JP. I was getting 2-3 hour waits easily before I started selecting J. Since then, I haven't waited longer than 30 mins, even during JP peak hours.

Imo... They should use the google translate API and add it to the client.

E.g.

Player A has set in their config that they speak english
Player B has set in their config that they speak japanese

Player A and Player B enter a group,

Player A has auto translate turned on so when player b types in chat, player a's client automatically google translate what they said and displays the english translation.

Though this should be something users can turn off on their end if it makes them lag.

You're using a 1-page thread (which by reading all the responses, is NOT supported by everyone who responded) is hardly very credible evidence to suggest the ENTIRE Japanese community feels the same way as the extremely tiny minority who apparently posted that message.

But, to humor you, reading the thread, it's from someone who didn't like language barriers when it was necessary to communicate what to do in dungeons to people who are unfamiliar with it, ie newbies. As my tip covered, it is only really recommended to join other language DF groups when you are quite familiar already with that duty, and barely any instruction is necessary. Furthermore, pre-communicating to everyone that there is a language barrier and to be patient with you while translating, has ALWAYS, in my experience, netted positive results, positive responses, and even very friendly attitudes.

So, judging by my own experience which is completely contradictory to the SMALL minority you quoted, I think it is quite alright to join other language duties. It has YET to be a problem for me or anyone I've played with, and none of them have ever expressed any negativity over it. Matter of fact, I've accomplished far more in JP groups than English-only groups, and I can't recall any of those JP groups expressing negativity whatsoever towards me. However, I've been in many major FAIL english groups, and lots of blaming goes around - almost always directed at the language barrier, rather than the real problem. Point here is: language barriers are rarely the problem. It's either the people themselves, or how the instructions are given.

Edit: And lastly, it's pretty obvious why SE doesn't totally restrict languages from inter-mingling: they want to promote the world to play together, not segregate based on languages. With an auto-translator built in, that much is obvious.

Oh I completely agree here :) Google Translate's API is pretty fast, too. I can imagine it getting slow if someone is trying to write a book in a single statement, but for one-liners, etc, which is most communication anyways, it's very fast.

I thought there was an auto-translate type thing in-game already? If you type "he" and hit tab it usually shows {Hello!} and can be read in multiple languages as such.

You may just be using Google Translate for fuller message but I just thought I should mention it in case it wasn't known.

Yes, it's there. We use Google Translate for everything the Auto-Translate does not cover...which, unfortunately, is way too much. It should have every monster name, for instance.

I won't be doing this primarily because I actually like to converse with people while performing a dungeon run. To joke and chatter while we spend the next half an hour or so of our time together.

It's really sad how few people will actually talk while in a dungeon. I'm not at the end-game ones yet, but even as a tank during trash with the length of the GCD I have enough time to shoot out a comment while playing. Talking builds community and all of that, and Iwouldn't want to be rude to someone and not talk because I don't know their language and queued up in their duty finder because I was impatient.

If I wanted to just run through a dungeon with suboptimal, silent bots I'd go play Final Fantasy XIII.

Actually, I do see almost all the ppl replying are agreeing with putting stricter rules. (Maybe you have better understanding of Japanese than me. in that case, please point out which ones are "NOT support"ing)
Which is, again, somewhat sad for me because I am not of Japanese origin myself.
As to the part about thread being short, JP forum tends to use "Like!"s (as agreeing) instead of actually replying same/similar thing over and over again (ofcourse, there are times when ppl do that too) so what you need to count is not actually the page numbers, but the "Like"s on each reply.
(In that sense, I would NOT think 68 as a SMALL number)


From my personal experience, I had a few problems myself with DF in different languages.
The most serious one being a English speaking person in a JP group, was trying to assure the group he knows how to do this, but the group DID NOT understand that "statement" he made.
I kinda do the translation when things like such happens, but...NOT every group will have someone who knows both languages ofcourse.



In Short: It's your freedom to do it. but keep in mind people COULD be hating you.
I love to see people from different culture working together, but just raising "another view" on this issue.

I said, "Is not supported by everyone." This means, "Of the *9* people who responded to the thread, not *ALL 9* of them were in support of it. Only some of them. Heck, maybe even 8 of them could be said to partially agree, but then some of them also said it doesn't matter if it's a duty that everyone is very familiar with anyways."

But this was just a mere aside to the fact that we were talking about a thread that only got 9 responses, from someone asking for better Duty Finder restrictions based on language. If a thread of that type only gets 9 responses, not only is this indicative that the topic is hardly an important one to the gigantic majority of JP players, but of the majority of people who even read the forums, ONLY *9* people responded. Nine. That's 1 less than 10, and 1 more than 8. I think this speaks for itself: The JP's really don't care one way or the other; they're more friendly than the NA/EU crowd, and far more welcoming.

You can make small talk in between mini boss battle, and boss, but overall the game is very fast pace and you gotta move a lot so it's too hectic to make small talk while trying to avoid monsters deadly moves.

At level 50 it doesn't matter anyways. You will want to Run CM or Ak and every time you will get "Reserving Instance" even though your group is formed and ready. You wait no matter what in that case.

Wait so 9 replies and 68 likes out of the entire JP forum base is a large number to you? You really don't have much of a grasp of scale do you?

I've done a few dungeons with everyone else in the group being JP. Sure there wasn't much chit chat, and it was obviously a first time for us as we were kind of wandering around trying to figure out where to go next, but everything went smoothly.

Auto + Google can cover most of what you need. And JP people may get angry or "be hating you" but they don't spam chat with a bunch of trash if/when it happens like the English speakers.

I've been using the all world/language groups since my first DF mission :D
Also I've suggested this exact same thing in other threads where people have been moaning about long waits in the DF lol.

EDIT: usually end up playing with JP players and other Europeans (non-Brits)

You will find it still matters. i didn't just get 50 yesterday. We experimented this after having been 50 for several weeks now. This changed our queue times dramatically in AK, CM, Garuda HM, Titan HM, etc.

Here's WHY it still matters:

Let's say there's 10 instances allowable at any given time. Currently, there are 9 JP groups running AK, and 1 Eng group running AK.
1 Eng joins the queue, eng only.
1 JP joins the queue, JP only.
6 more JP join the queue, JP only.
...one of the JP AK groups finishes, opening an AK instance slot.
The Eng-only people, having joined the queue first with 1 person, start to reserve a queue spot.
...the Eng AK group finishes, opening an AK instance slot.
1 Eng joins the queue, now 3 people waiting for 1 person.
...The JP group launches immediately because there are 7 in the queue, enough for a full group with all necessary classes.
20 JP's join the queue.
...another AK group finishes, opening a queue slot.
Another JP-only group launches immediately due to having enough already queued.
1 Eng person joins the queue, enough to fill the first Eng group, and that group launches.
There are now 22 JP's in the queue still, waiting for an instance spot to open.
1 Eng person joins the queue, Eng-only.
That Eng-only person has to wait behind ALL 22 of those JP's, who likely have the next 7 instance slots reserved among them all due to the # of tanks, healers, dps, etc in that 22.

Do you understand it? That last Eng person who joined the queue now must wait for 10 different AK's to finish before they can even be considered for an instance reservation. All because they selected ENGLISH only on a JP server. Now imagine this on a scale 100x that, and I think you may start to get a full picture.

It does matter. It matters at level 50. It matters at level 10. It matters for every Duty, regardless of your level.

a picture representation would probably make this easier to see/understand, but it really is just a matter of 1+1 math :)

Ever play FFXI? JPs are infamous for not wanting to play with foreigners. Even if the content requires little strategy in question, JPs only want to play with people who speak JP.

The DF Language setting is for LANGUAGES YOU SPEAK, not the language you want to play with.

You can do this now, but when the kick option is introduced next patch, don't be surprised if you're votekicked out of a JP group

We've covered this topic already, but thanks for adding your two cents. But to recap: It seems JP's are infamous for not wanting to play with foreigners who are rude to them. Like others who have replied to this thread and have actually enjoyed the company of JP's, but do not speak their language, we have not had a problem with them. On the contrary; they are actually quite nice and welcoming, so long as you are nice, friendly, welcoming, and enjoyable to be around.

They're used to NA/EU people who are rude, nasty, disrespectful, and mean. NOT acting that way keeps you from getting kicked out of any group. It's not the language barrier typically. It's the behavior barrier

P.S. I think you need to take a look at exactly how the votekick function is going to work :)

some people using PS3 talking would be actually difficult I would imagine . But its sad Ive levelled 2 jobs doing nothing but dungeons and I rarely have seen the same players more than once .

Suffice to say with DF there is no community .

This is what Auto-Translate and Google Translate are for :) Included in the suggestion, are notes about notifying your group that you don't speak japanese (kindly), but do use a translator and as long as people are patient and concise in their instructions, you will use the translator to translate everything they say. Most any game-driven commands, spells, attack functions, etc have Auto-Translate equivalents. I have yet to encounter a situation that wasn't easily decipherable through Auto-Translate or Google Translate. And then after I understand what they say, I will repeat an English-to-Japanese translation of what I understood, and then they reply with OK, or Yes, or <Understood>.

It's funny. I'm really starting to see a trend from responses here, and it's usually a negative response based on people avoiding proper communication. If people are proactive in removing those language barriers before they become a problem, they'll find that their gaming experience with people of different languages is quite fun and much more enjoyable than with disgruntled people of the same language.

well, i'm on a JP server so i have to be able to do dungeons with them
i use google translate a lot, that helps
if you found a good group (which is most of the times), you won't need to say anything
but there are also bad (learning) Japanese players, so those are the times we have to communicate

this is new for me, but i don't think all of them feel that way
sometimes, i also un-tick the J language in DF, but i still find them
so i assume that they're also ticking all of the languages in DF

I really hate to be that person but the whole "I'm on a PS3" thing only goes so far... You're playing a MMORPG where communication is the key point (at least it's supposed to be, you get in some groups and you'd never realize it was nothing beyond poorly played AI). For the first little bit I can understand not realizing what a PS3 player is getting into with this sort of game but after playing it for a while I would suspect investing in a keyboard for the PS3 would be on top priority.

I've actually had some really good experiences in the Duty Finder. While I've never run into those awesome people before the time spent together was great. And being able to communicate was what made it so much fun.

Sure, beating the dungeon is important, but the most fun I had was my first run through Stone Vigil with two folks from other servers. We all joked, talked and babbled away as we went through. It took us a few tries on some of the bosses but we finally beat the place (with 15 seconds to spare!) and it is something I will never forget.

Key points from that thread:

1. Some want some kind of server-side enforcement, and objections are mostly regarding practicality in implementation.
2. Many call for an official announcement to the effect of: "non Japanese speaking people, please stop trolling by ticking the J option if you can't speak Japanese", and they call for this to be listed officially as a form of harassment that is punishable.
3. Some still think "JP Group" is for Japanese only, although many also speak out and correct these people.
4. There is a bug that may result in parties with no common language. Some of them just want this bug fixed. (Which invariably mean that J-only people will never get matched with non-J people.)

In general, however, they mostly agree that ticking the J option just because one wants a faster queue is bad manners, arguably a fraudulent behaviour.

And I agree with them. Joining JEDF while you can't speak EDF is just selfish and gives no consideration to what other people may wish.

For me? When I'm on my DD classes, I gather, I craft, but I will not join JEDF.

It's really simple: If SE didn't intend for different languages to intermingle, there would be no built-in Auto-Translator, especially with phrases designated just for telling everyone you only speak a certain language, and dictating assignments/instructions in duties. If that bothers such an extremely small minority of people, they have the option of leaving if they feel they are being harassed or "bad mannered" simply because someone doesn't speak their language natively. One could make the argument that because someone doesn't KNOW what to do in the duty finder, yet joins a duty without knowing the duty, this too is fraudulent behavior - again, using the same logic being used for languages.

Your logic is flawed.

You have to purposefully tick the language to join it in that language. However joining a duty you are not yet familiar with is part of natural game progression.

And please stop with the "minority" thing, as nobody but Square Enix have the actual numbers. So there's no point bringing an assumed democracy into the discussion.

If you really need to communicate, you can always use an online translator to understand what they are saying, and then reply. Nothing in AK is that hard to begin with.

Indeed. Of all the things people are sensitive about, language barriers definitely should not be one of them. SE has done the best they can to not only accommodate those with language barriers, but also encourages it by use of the same. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being selfish.

People should not be forced to wait 2-3 hours for a duty finder group, when the average wait time for that server is 20-30 minutes because of the primary language spoken there. Saying someone who doesn't know the language, but has run that duty hundreds of times and knows every inch of it by heart, but is not allowed to group with anyone but their own language speakers, is just mean and to quote someone else: is bad manners, arguably a fraudulent behaviour.

I get that you just want to dump my own words on me, but at least make an effort to find words that would make sense in your context. :3

Point is, there are Japanese players who are bothered by non-Japanese speaking people who join with J enabled yet are unable to communicate and then cause trouble. That is the context of the words "bad manners, arguably fraudulent", in their words (obviously translated by me).

I know a lot of players on this forum couldn't care less what other people think or feel from their game time, but consideration for others and avoid doing what others don't want, is part of the Japanese culture, part of their up-bringing.

Please keep that in mind next time you do JEDF and can't understand a word of Japanese. Don't be surprised if you're not treated well and come crying that Japanese people are rude towards foreigners. Because in that case you started the rudeness first.

Fixed that for you. I get Insta-Dungeons without trying this trick at all.... it'll be a great help for my BRD though.

Since day one i use all languages ticked. I only speak E and G. I play on a japanese server.
90% of the groups i did/do are/were japanese speaking,, with the rare english speaking person in.
I had good groups, i had bad groups. I had good mannered J players, who like me, /bow at entrance and say something to greet.
I had bad mannered J players who didnt care for a /bow or any greeting and zerged the dungeon, leaving w/o coment at the end.
I had good and bad E players. Same examples as with the J.

All this "we need one language only groups" stuff is so 1936 it makes me vomit.
You have good and bad mannered people regardless of language or nationality. Most people i have encountered are good people manner wise.

Point is: You can have all facettes of behaviour coming from all countrys, G, E, J orF. Heck, one of the persons on my friends list is french and we speak english together.

You make your game and how other people see you is totally up to you, not to a language.

This worked like a charm in Phase 4, don't see why it wouldn't work now. Good OP!
