Idea for a new gatherer : Poacher

At last I've started leveling gathering and crafting classes (Thank you, expensive rank IV materia for forcing me to find a way to create you on my own :p), and it's actually really fun and fresh compared to Disciples of War or Magic.

One thing that bothers me is when you need a component from monsters to make a recipe and you don't have any solution to "control" the drops. (I don't really know if ROG improves this a lot since I'm too low level at the moment)
Recently, I've also done an Ixali quest that required you to shear a crocodile in Coerthas to take its wool.

And it striked me ! We need a Poacher !
A gatherer class than can collect wool, skin, horns, hooves, meat etc...

It would need to have stats higher than other gathering classes to be able to kill monsters, but since open world monsters are not very dangerous, I don't think it would really be an "inbalance".

I think it should use Rifles, and it would have skills to cripple beasts, like bearclaw, sedative, baits for predator, etc...it could be a whole new gameplay that provides some interesting challenges for gathering high materials.

As secondary gathering points, it could have corpses. When a monster is killed, by anyone, it could stay on the field for a little time as a corpse allowing you to gather additionnal material. For that, you'd use a skinning knife as a secondary gathering tool.

So, what do you think of this ?

Essentially your DoW and DoM's are your poachers. at least thats how I get things like horns hooves, meat and such.

It's not really a bad idea, but with the way the game is currently, it'd be kinda redundant. I mean, if I need fleece for example, I just switch to DoM and go to Coerthas and kill Karakuls for an hour and get like 200 of them. But the idea of adding rare items only obtained through "poaching" could be interesting, but then i ask would it just be too much? Would I need to go and poach 1 item, then gather shards, then mine for another mat, then craft it? It starts becoming too much.

You do know that in the Black Shroud poaching is a crime punishable with death don't you?

Yes, but as I said, you don't have any control over what you loot, whereas gathering allows you to uses skills to attain this goal.

You already "poach" one item as a DoW/DoM, mine or log another mat, then craft it.

Yet, none of us were punished when our levequests required that we slay hundred of animals in the Shroud.

To be fair, that's what "leve" means - we were granted permission to do that slaying. The elementals seem to be cool with the cullings assigned by the levemetes; not so much with the illegal hunting done by the Coeurlclaws and other poaching groups.

They don't seem to have any issue with the random monster slaughtering done by adventurers, either, since an adventurer seems to be free to waltz into the South Shroud and murder hundreds of elk for horns and meat without any consequence.

An "animal part" gathering class isn't a bad idea, but actually calling it "Poacher" might lampshading the "adventurer can do no wrong" aspect of the game a bit too much. Maybe call it "Trapper"?

It would also need SOMETHING, too, to differentiate itself from DoM and DoW. As was mentioned, these jobs already do a fine job of "gathering" meat and bones. Poacher (or Trapper or whatever) would need something to set it apart; unique drops, perhaps, or guaranteed acquisition of items (rather than the RNG DoW and DoM have to put up with), or maybe even methods for obtaining items without actually having to kill (like the Ixali beard quest). Or all of the above.

There was a never implemented gathering class in 1.xx called shepherd.

The Shepherd's guild, or at least its sign, still exists to this day.

Yes, it's an alternative. After all they did the same with Thieves ;)

Your idea of something unique is exactly what I imagined. You could collect some items multiples time on a living target, and with an increased chance for high-quality material by using some skills. In fact, were I to balance the game with this new class, I'll reduce little by little the drops you could obtain by simply killing foes as a DoW or DoM to put further emphasis on the "Trapper".

a DoW/DoM retainer can collect most of the mats. ;)

Acrher guild having a hard enough time with these tbh....
