What's the point with that quite lackluster story in Endwalker?

I still find the statement from the devs about how we weren’t ‘meant’ to read her as a villain a bit amusing. It's a fair enough point and all but given the recent revelation that she might've purposely missed Emet during the sundering, I can’t I help but be reminded of the Bahamut reveal from episode Ardyn.

Bahamut playing god of causality ensured that both Noctis and Ardyn wouldn’t veer off the paths preordained for them. Similarly, I can’t rationalize why Venat would spare Emet, subjecting him to 12K years of misery and essentially forcing him to play his role as villain for any reason other than to recreate the exact conditions that led to our history as we described it to her. Whether you determine her to be good or bad, it’s hard to ignore now that the Ascians are a monster of her making.

This also unfortunately vindicated my theory that the rejoinings couldn’t have been failures as she claimed back in HW since most of them were likely orchestrated by Emet himself anyways. Calling them failures at this point is like someone setting free a serial killer who threatens to kill their child, then acting surprised when they kill their child.

Aye, and it's something the Codex is quite silent on. It'd raise an eyebrow or two otherwise.

it's that they seem to have swept the whole blasphemy threat under the rug like I was fearing despite it being explicitly acknowledged that there's still enough residual fallout from the Final Days to allow people to turn.

It also feels like they basically defused the whole Corvos situation offscreen with it being stated that the second legion's forces were utterly decimated by the Final Days by the time the Eorzean Alliance arrived.

Hopefully the remaining Garlean legions will be handled in a more interesting manner and the blasphemies might still resurface later.

I'm not so sure about that.

They outright mentioned that people were able to still turn, and IInd Legion in Corvos was taken out, meaning the region is currently out of control. Since we have 2 of our (sadly) unimportant Scion friends going to take care of it, we may get dragged into there for the new relic area in order to bring stability to the region. And since people can still turn into blasphemies...that means they aren't quite done with that plot thread just yet. In short, look forward to Corvos stuff.

Uhhh I'm not done yet but what are the chances the people that screamed "Ancients are mean and lacking in empathy look how they treat their familiars!!" are going to see the irony of-

Y'shtola creating two familiars purely for the purpose of sending them into the Void to test how messed up one would become without a scale. I'm sure there will be an excuse made, right?

That begs the question: do all familiars or magically created beings have souls? Up until Endwalker, it seemed that familiars were at best just animals, not sentient beings. But then Endwalker introduces a familiar that looks and acts like a human, and is practically unable to be distinguished from such, with the only noted difference being her low aetheric density and that she was created by a wizard. So if we recognize Meteion as a person, then do we not recognize other familiars as people because they appear and act inhuman? Would they have rights if they had a human appearance and could speak?

Do Mammets have souls? Are the mammets we see working in workshops in Ul'dah and the library in Sharlayan... are they slaves? Or what about magitek automatons? What would we consider that magitek mecha from the end of ARR that was fond of the WoL?

If darn near everything has a soul, then what doesn't have a soul?

Should regular dogs have been sent through the portal? Or should convicted prisoners awaiting execution have been sent through the portal for the test?

I think familiars/arcane constructs are generally distinguished from living things by the fact that while they can have minds, they don't possess any of the other traits typically required for something to be considered "alive" like a functioning biological anatomy (Meteion being mentioned as not being able to eat as requiring sustenance would've been a detriment to her purpose of traveling the stars), which is also one of the requisites for something to possess a soul in the first place.

It still raises an icky question of morality if those beings are still able to feel pain physically or emotionally, though...

Doesn't the star decide who/what is granted a soul in the end? Everything is an arcane entity until is is granted a soul then it can be considered "alive", no? I don't have my sources pulled up but that's what I remember off the top of my head.

It is mentioned by the Ancients that fresh creations are soulless but are eventually granted souls if their bodies are self-sustaining via the laws of nature as opposed to requiring aether infusions like those lightning sprites did.

The same principle seemed to apply to Alpha who eventually gains a soul and is able to be understood via the Echo by the end of Omega raids...which further makes me wonder if all the beings in Ultima Thule may end up the same way and thus have their civilizations truly revived.

Yeah there's a lot of sugarcoating going on with a bit of revisionist history sprinkled in here and there. It describes her as "She who has long kept Etheirys turning," but that was a best a joint effort between the two of them, not something that can be solely attributed to Hydaelyn as there wouldn't be an Etheirys worth saving without Zodiark to begin with. It refers to Zodiark as a "Manifestation of that ill-fated wish," conveniently disregarding the circumstances behind his existence as a band aid solution to a problem they couldn't reasonably be expected to fully comprehend on their own.

Though my favorite part was "However, she knew that from their imperfection-their suffering-would arise the strength to face deepest despair." Last I checked, it was the Warrior of light that carried humanity through the final days. Both we and Venat learned the truth behind the final days at the same time, but where she decides to withhold that information from her people, we go on to share it with ours, and as a result, an interesting development occurs. Sharlayan, a solitary nation primarily concerned with self preservation is shown the truth, and allows us the opportunity to repurpose their one and only chance to escape the planet come the worst case scenario into a vessel designed to send us to the edge of the universe. It was the truth that ultimately convinced a stubborn nation to give up on escape and allowed them to open their minds to new possibilities. Without the truth, Etheirys was done.

We can never know how much better or worse the ancients would've fared had they been as fortunate as us. But when considering why Zodiark exists as he does and the VERY specific purpose he serves, I wonder: had Venat actually shared the truth, would Zodiark have even needed to exist as we knew him?

I managed to get everything but the Role quests out of the way today.

I'll put my sleepy, slightly coherent ramblings under a cut for spoilers.

I was expecting the Void and Zenos' voidsent but I must admit not quite so soon. While that part may one day be interesting I found myself quite bored more often than not, with the post-Alliance raid quests making me shout at my monitor because of how long they dragged on. Several people here have mentioned how much they dislike G'raha and while I can't relate to disliking him, I definitely got a glimpse of your pain when they suggested I take Y'shtola along with. I shouted "NO!" at my monitor yet again (I did this a lot) horrified at the prospect of having to spend more than passing moments with her. You can probably guess that she is a distant last place for me in terms of Scion likeability so these quests have been an exercise in learning how not to roll my eyes so much that I give myself a headache. Some incredibly cheesy moments in writing, especially when Y'shtola tells all about how she traveled to the edge of reality and "heard, felt and thought". My poor head still hurts.

I found the Alliance raid to also be very boring, the fights were cool but there wasn't any interesting lore dropped and I remember feeling a bit angry when I zoned into the Seventh Heaven place and it was just discount Elpis. It did finalize my decision to drop Azeyma like a bad penny, though. All it took was one time of her calling us her "children" and I noped the fk out. Nald'Thal here I come, baby. The architecture and the Elpis-ness of it makes me feel as though they are going to try to connect this to the Ancients somehow and I wish they wouldn't. Just leave them alone, you've done enough damage to their story.

In closing, opening a voidgate seems like an extremely bad idea considering the presence of rampaging monsters in the world being a thing wasn't all that long ago. But Y'shtola must know what she's doing, right? After all the Matoya music plays now whenever she's thinking really hard so I'm clearly supposed to believe she's just as wise and trustworthy. I like Vrtra though, so I'm willing to help him out.

I'll try to be more insightful once I've woken up.

I skipped every single cutscene because I'm no longer interested in the story.

Unlocked the alliance raid and spammed it around 5 or 6 times. Loved the raid! It gave me StB vibes which is a good thing. My favorite was the second boss. Looking forward to the other 2 raids. Just glad to be done with all the Neir stuff. We'll see if the 3rd raid finally tops Orbonne for me.

I think the implication that despair was the dominant feeling to the point that it was drowning out what little positivity remained.

There was a small part of her collective that still wanted to cling to hope which is represented by the blue Meteia that appear; one of which is gradually blackened as it guides you through the Dead Ends.

No that doesn't make sense, since you actually need a lot of positivity to push through the bad times. If the despair increases then so does the feelings of hope and determination, remember, all emotions, there is no implication anywhere that her powers to absorb every feeling was altered or in any respect dimmer, and given that she had the mental capacity of an entire collective she should very much have been able to understand why people do choose to go on. I'm not debating that she developed a fatalistic viewpoint, what I am debating is that the concepts that enables people to power through the worst of times seemed so alien and meaningless to her. Like the concept of personal battle and triumph just did not exist. It's just weird and whiny in the end, and hilariously self righteous. They ultimately put an immature kid in a position of power with nothing but a hopped up teen emo perspective, it doesn't make for a compelling villain

Well, you just touched upon one of the core fallacies and nonsensical issues with the premise of Endwalker. The very nature of Ultima Thule and the Endsinger makes the argument that the emotional weight of an entire civilization is only has relevance in its final generation. Imagine if we judged the worth of the Roman Empire ONLY by those who were present when it was sacked. Or the Byzantine Empire ONLY after its people were conquered and slaughtered by the Ottomans. We're supposed to believe that because the natives of the Americas were enslaved, driven out and ultimately subjected to genocide by European settlers, that the older generations might as well never lived at all. That we living in the present day must secretly yearn for death just because at some point, some generation of humanity will be the last one.

This has to be true in FFXIV's world or else Ultima Thule couldn't exist.

I mean we didn't need this to make that point, because there is plenty of lore which already suffices to establish that the sundered don't give a damn about these things - less than the ancients did, for sure - but when you show up to Elpis, with soul-devouring Reaper avatar in tow, sorry if I don't take the "shock" at the petalouda being aetherically decomposed too seriously. To then have...

Y'shtola chuck a familiar in the Void, with our own character matter-of-fact-ly suggesting it depending on the option you pick... they could've had an obnoxious hypocrite Hermes ghost floating about, wagging his finger.

Even sprites basically have some survival urge according to Hermes, but then what normally functioning entity doesn't? I think referring to them as simulacra in the case of beings such as primals or summons gives a strong hint as to what the likes of constructed arcane entities (egi etc.) are - they're effectively arcane AIs, but you also get naturally occurring ones, like the sprite. It's strange that the star is so fussy about what it will put a soul into, and I've a theory that there's ancient souls and then souls for plant and animal life, and maybe gradations in between, but trying to nail down anything in this setting can be tricky, especially on a topic like this. Given that G'raha is munching down on a beef patty, from a once ensouled cow raised for that purpose, I think it's clear that Hermes's "angst" was to give him some rationale in the moment that wasn't ever going to be turned into a wider point, particularly given that Venat herself does not give a toss about it, and given the behaviours we see in the sundered. At best it was just there to stimulate his existential angst regarding the purpose of life in the face of death.

Exactly. All the things you mention are glossed over by it. As I said elsewhere, it's as close to a mesmerised fanboy's in-setting hagiography of her as you can get. The things it glosses over were all acknowledged at the Q&A, in interviews or in the actual game; and whilst I realise this is an in-game source, so may reflect someone's bias/lack of complete knowledge, it will still be taken as gospel by many, when the underlying reality is much more complex.

I'm at the point where my interest has just drained and I will probably just check in each patch to see if it's improving and if not, focus on other stuff.

Given how much story regarding the void is behind side content it makes me wonder how much they can feasibly do with it in the MSQ. People have been saying they need to start making more raids mandatory, but that's the antithesis of their goal to make the game solo friendly (and would frankly be a deal breaker for me). I've never done The Warring Triad or finished the ShB role quests. I, the player, may know the lore, but my character has never met Unukalhai and doesn't know the truth of Cyella either. Given that they're the only two survivors of the 13th that we know of (although, someone said Elidibus could've saved more?), that seems like a big deal.

It makes me wonder how much of this is just going to continue to be side content and, if that's the case, I should severely temper my expectations because I can't see another rejoining or soul merger happening in a side quest.

All the characters I liked were killed off and I've never liked the Scions except for Estinien. The HW style of storytelling I enjoyed doesn't seem to be coming back. So what incentive do I really have to stay invested in the story? Being forced to travel with what I consider to be bland party members is pretty frustrating. So pretty much the moment one of them opens their mouth I'm like SKIP :D

To be honest my favorite content in the game are the 8 man and 24 man raids and trying out different classes. So in my case, it's better for me to just focus on that and play other games when I've finished the content.

I had this same thought. I've done all the Role quests from ShB so I know the outcome and expected a visit to the Thirteenth to "fix" it, but I know a lot of people have not finished them and do not know the story of Unukalhai and Cylva at all. They can't make it mandatory that every player levels up 4-5 jobs in order to get that hidden story unlocked so how are they going to make the crux of those role quests known in the msq? They are quite relevant as we saw yesterday.

I am rather interested in seeing more of the void though I'm assuming it's going to be strictly through solo duties, dungeons, and perhaps a small instanced hub for the trial series.

For all we know there might not even be enough of the world left to base a proper expansion around and we'll end up making headway in fixing it through side content. If its denizens actually have a plan to bring their world "salvation" perhaps a cooperative effort on both ends could yield fruit.

If we are getting more Void stuff, I hope they go hard on the hellscape aesthetics and tone. Give us clouds with innumerable eyes, walls of gnashing maws, and the ground a screaming carpet of faces.

Unlikely, at least for me. Unlikely. They’ve shown this patch they’re will to just handwave most stories that don’t involve the writers’ beloved scions. Garlemald’s entire story? Destroyed off screen and the garleans are just taken to the moon. Corvos? Second legion is gone there, died to the final days. Nerva who was built up for most of ShB? Killed off and turned into a blasphemy. 10/10 writing. At least we’ve seen the writing of the new “junior writers”, and have seen it isn’t an improvement from EW.

I was always under the impression that a mature story acknowledged varied personal tastes. The developers certainly talk up the differences in perspective but at this point anyone who isn't fully aligned with the Scions is killed off, usually in a very undignified manner that ignores any positive aspects of their being. This isn't the game I enjoyed throughout ARR and HW and it's clearly only going to get worse from here on out.

Which sucks, but it is what it is - WoW went in the exact same direction. I could stick around for the PvE and PvP stuff but...to be honest, there's other options on the market that do both better from my perspective. I was excited about the new PvP mode but I can't queue for it with friends which killed my interest altogether - and I say that as one of the rare players who unironically enjoyed playing Frontlines.

Just finished the role quests and am not happy at all with the fact that they wrapped up a certain NPC's fate behind them. I thought he was going to be a major player going forward for Garlemald. Nope! He's side content.

Yeah I’ve noticed a trend of them killing off anyone remotely interesting to me and by the end of 5.0 I was getting close to fed up with it. EW was the final nail in the coffin.

Looks like I’m already done with the content I resubbed for…and it only took a day and a half lol. I was working on The Necromancer title but when you put in so much work just to get to floor 187 and dc, it’s just not worth the time investment. So now I’m out of content til the next patch.

Mm. If they're not killed off they're hidden away in side content and largely left irrelevant.

Since 6.1 didn't really add anything to justify me sticking around, I'm just going to take a break and play something else. Most of the core features advertised as new aren't going to be added until 6.2 or 6.3 which is a real shame. I do wish I could just skip cutscenes and not think about stuff but much like yourself, I'm sorely lacking for goals to pursue that aren't just a massive time sink or painful grind.

I wish it was a joke. What’s funny is they couldn’t even give Nerva a unique model. He’s just a reskinned version of the final Amaurot boss.

I'm not done playing through the patch but I just wanted to chime in and say, what on earth were they thinking? Their handling of the Garlemald situation in the role quest was little more than another attempt to moralize and hastily wrap up the loose ends they couldn't be bothered to wrap up in the 6.0 MSQ.

Sending them to the moon? Who came up with that idea?

Nerva lacking a character model that they could have easily pieced together from already existing assets? Was the person in charge of this also overseeing the Hrothgar hair project? The lack of care for a figure that the story had been building up over time simply doesn't make sense.

I'll probably post my full thoughts on the patch in another thread, but for now I just need to step away and process what I just witnessed.

Does this mean the Solus line is ended? :(

Seemingly yes. The other remaining members of the royal family perished off screen during one of the side quest chains in Garlemald concerning one of their servants. At least we've been spared the embarrassment of a Garlean royal stepping down and accepting a reversion of the country to a republic.

They really went out of their way to ensure that all of the fruits of his loins were crushed and destroyed. I just had to laugh at the screenshot I saw of 'Nerva'. Though, honestly, I think the Garleans all just moving to the Moon full-time and becoming the Lunarians: Magitek Edition away from the savages is probably the closest they can get to a happy ending. And away from the marauding claws of the all-consuming Alliance.
