Ooooh! The new Khajiit models look interesting. Never thought ESO devs had it in them but looks like they're putting a lot of work into Elsweyr.
But back to FF14- oh... wait...?

It doesn't change my answer, who specifically makes the decision. The company as a whole is the outfit putting together and tendering the product and I maintain that they remain free to do so on terms they are willing to do so. However, the comment I quoted was about a developer's own preferences factoring in, in any case.
Reposting this from the other thread just to voice my displeasure: I literally have never posted on the official forum before, and registered JUST to voice my displeasure with the introduction of gender-locked races. It's profoundly regressive and utterly frustrating. Please consider adding male Viera and female Hrothgar. I'm so tired of hulking male races and willowy female races in games. I was ready to throw my money at fantasia to become a bunny-boy and that money is gone now.
There are certain aspects of stories that you expect to exist.
You expect a beginning, middle, and end. You also expect that if there are men, then there must also be women, and vice versa. If there isn't, there should be a damn good explanation.
For an MMO, you expect to be able to play both as a man or a woman. MMO's don't necessarily even have a beginning, middle, or end, but at the very least being able to play as a man or a woman has been a necessity from the very beginning of MMO's. It's even sometimes a feature in single player games, let alone multi player.
For the lore not to facilitate it is no excuse, because those who are putting it in the game are those who are responsible for the lore.
Even GW2 gave you female Charr, or abominations as I like to call them, but at least they exist. GW1 female Charr looked closely identical to male Charr, which was acceptable enough to me. However we don't have that here.
In the end, a player who is playing a Ronso or a Viera cannot have a straight same race eternal bond, which seems somewhat ridiculous.
I'm legitimately curious about this - who actually asked for or wanted the Hrothgar?
I would like to add to the pile of feedback and politely voice my own displeasure with gender locked races, especially after the declaration that they would attempt to limit genderlocking in the future after adding the male bunny suit items.
And not to get too political but having yet another popular mmo with a big, complexly designed, and feature-interesting muscle bound dude race with an underdressed sexy female only race is also a bit much. I really thought they were better than this.
I feel bad for Ronso. Would have been cool if they came as their own separate race, but since they've come as a "replacement" for another race's gender they'll be shunned by the greater community for taking it away.
If they just made both Viera genders and released Ronso at a later date none of this backlash would happen.

They've already made this mistake in 1.0 for those of us who have really been devout fans and witnessed firsthand with male miq and fem roe. I will log on and post every day until they add both sexes for each race and I encourage those who feel strongly enough to do the same. /day 1
Genderlocked races after this long? Didn't they learn from the disappointment with Au Ra gender dimorphism, catboys, roe ladies, all of it????
Incredibly disappointing, hoping they change their minds.
Edit 9/2019: After all the information that came out, I get it. I know why they did what they did. And I would much rather have a dev team that doesn't overwork themselves than two full new races.
Popping into voice my displeasure as well.
Gender locked races are disappointing across the board. Didn't they already fix this exact mistake in 2.0 with the Male Miqo and Female Roe/Highlanders? I can't believe they did the same thing again. If they'd come out and said 'hey we're not ready to do female Hrothgar/male Viera but we have plans to' it'd probably have done a lot to quell the storm, as it were. But here we are. In 2019 and thinking gender locked races are acceptable lmao.
The worst timeline.
Quite a lot of people have requested a playable race along the lines of the Ronso over the years. It just so happens that whenever they were brought up the same sort of scathing commentary and rage you see in response to the gender lock was thrown their way. I would have preferred them to be a bit closer to Byakko in terms of design, though I'm very happy for those who I know wanted a 'bestial' playable race. Which isn't a small number at all.
Sooooooo that person who called people dumb for calling them Ronso, but they're literally called Ronso in the alternate shard. SE employee officially trolling us with leaks XD?
Also oof on the gender lock but I guess it was one of the plausible realities so I'm not too shocked. Shocked dancer is not healer though, that took me by more surprise.. Wonder if this Gaia hammer job will turn out to be a healer?
Would hope people who wanted the gender lock undone can stay civil (and resilient), I feel that it would be plausible that SE unlocks them later. . . unless the explicit reason they're locked is because one or both of the big devs recoiled so hard they put their foot down in which case good luck :( @_@.
Would certainly be awesome to see the male Viera and female Ronso.
I had to re-read my post to make sure I didn't sound like I came in gloating.. Because I'm not happy some people are sad, but I did think it was cool they actually went through with making Ronso.
For the two clans, unlikely, but very cool if the Ronso race had a Byakko like body option (given the sliders and such- they did talk about how much advanced customization these two races will have).
Posting to also show my displeasure in this. It's such a copout on the devs end.
The room was dead silent after they announced them. :x
girls should be allowed to present themselves as powerful, and boys should be allowed to look elegant. literally the only thing sparking my interest in continuing to play was the idea of bunny boys. 100% done now. square lives in a world where boys play with trucks and girls play with dolls, and its profoundly difficult to be anyone that doesnt fall into a painfully backwards and categorically stereotypical gender archetype.
Not quite - they did cheer, but it was a bit delayed. Could be genuine excitement, could be "oh yeah, we should probably cheer now or it'll be awkward".
(I'm thinking of after the video though, can't remember what the reaction was when they showed the first picture.)
I must have missed this then, but I can understand why people would want a bestial race. However, they've effectively dumped around half of that population by gender-locking it to men only. I can also imagine they lost another chunk of that population just by virtue of how ugly they are...I'm getting more Cats the Musical as played by Roegadyn vibes rather than actual bestial qualities lol. I feel like not very many people saw the reveal and went "Oh, finally!!!! This is exactly what I wanted!" but that's just me.
You're all missing my point completely. Nowhere at all did they say "we have introduced the Ronso from FF10", this means the "wah no females" is completely irrelevant, because 14s Hrothgar are not Ronso. Lore wise, we know absolutely nothing about them other than the fact they look like Ronso and happen to share the name in an alternate shard. For all we know, female Hrothgar just don't exist in the world of 14.
Of course they would allow you to make Khimari/Fran lookalikes, this is fanservice fantasy after all. To expect anything different wpuld be idiotic.
I hope they add a future patch to fix this, gender lock it's always been a really bad idea. I want delicate boys and strong women, I want to choose what to be. I'm a girl that plays as a handsome miqo'te. Let me choose!!! D:
Yeah, I'm going to reserve my full judgement for when we get to play around with customisation options and see how they look in-game in cutscenes and such. At the end of the day, if I don't like them there are multiple playable races that I do like the look and feel of.
You're not starved for those aesthetics. You can already customise characters to look exactly that way if you wish.
Personally I'm glad that we're getting something genuinely unique in the form of a proper 'bestial' race.
