Yes and no, vishap is only around 50 meters large, so yoshi p is talking about a mob 4 or 5 times bigger than vishap. SoF is also an instance, whereas a fate is open world, think about how bad a hunt is on ps3, now imagine that the hunt is a sky battle with a mob the size just described, starting to look like less of an excuse when you look at it like that

I think we all agree Vishap is big enough. And I think we all agree "The Steps of Faith" would be the second worst open world FATE ever. The worst being the one you are suggesting. My point is, it's wouldn't be fun. People don't do FATEs we have now. The reason why were not getting it is it's bad game design.

I'm trying to imagine a beast four to five times the size of Vishap. It could eat you and you'd be in a full size dungeon! And flapping it's wings would force everyone on the map to the next area! :p

I don't understand your point, I actually think it would be really cool, thanks for the patronising comment. The point of the quote is more about how as technology advances, hardware will need to be considered to do more things in the game, whether you like it or not, the Ps3 is a hindrance to the design of the game, and the freedom that they have with it

Your right, I've been a bit of an arrogant prick here. I'm sorry.

Remember, somethings only cool the first time or two you see something. After that it quickly becomes stale. And open world content requires people to drop whatever they are doing and then go out of their way to participate. FATEs are basically just reward experience and some gil. Occasionally a minion or achievement, which only need to be obtained once. There's little incentive to do them.

Presently the team lacks the freedom to design content intended for 8K resolutions. There are always limits.

It's your job as a developer to work within the limits given to you to create your vision. You can get hardware to do whatever you want with the right software.

I don't deny what you said, but in that scenario, wouldn't the devs still be bound to keep the game more or less the same across the board as they have been doing now? I don't think they would suddenly have two versions of the game to maintain for the sake of having a "better" game on PC.

Alot of people would rather the game drop consoles period. Screw having 2 versions.
Folks on the forums are just a vocal minority.

Going with the situation that they say made 2 versions...

Positive outlook:
If SE were to be vigilant and serious...
They'd optimize the game to the platform's specifications improving UI, load, graphics.
All while somehow managing to deliver content at the same time, and in equal amounts, while staying on top of issues with stability patches, hotfixes, & etc.

Negative Outlook:
Realistically, 1 version would become the favored version. As it either:
A. Brings in the most money.
B. Has the most players.
C. Is easier to develop for.

Now for having 2 versions being kept the same...
Yes and No.
Yes, the game would need to have the same content in terms of gameplay.
IE: Zones, Jobs, Story, let's just say Content.
And
No, the game versions could differ. Mainly in terms of features.
1 version (pc) being more versatile could get access to Add-Ons, Improved Graphics, performance enhancement, and maybe custom UI that's just naming a few things.
For the sake of argument I'll say Wii U.
Where as a Wii U version could assign Inventory/Map to the Gamepad.

As for "dropping support" of PS3...
Technically the developers are not required to supply stability patches. However most do as they don't want their game to be pulled off say the PSN or XB Marketplace.
Now if they did drop PS3...the real question would be...if PS3 would still be allowed to connect to SE servers even if patches, hotfixes, expats stopped rolling out for it.

Personally...if they could hire more folks and reoptimize the game into multiple versions: PC & Console; they could give players the best of both worlds.
But the cost behind that would be extreme.
Better off waiting for the next FF Online title.
They "could" do it...But unless this game does spread to more than just Playstation...I don't see SE investing in that.
The day Wii U (Listed for the sake of conversation), Nintendo NX, X-Box One (not holding my breath there.) get a version...well...then they may want to start fine tuning the game for every platform.

What exactly is a mediocre PC in your eyes? The current minimum specs is 2GB of Ram and a duel core. That is an ancient setup. If hypothetically that was increased to quad core and 4GB of ram, in this day in age (or let's say next year when the expansion comes out) that's still not a top end requirement (the so called PC master race outgrew that kind of set up years ago).

Put it this way, I'm only echoing the devs opinion that to keep ffxiv fresh and up to date, it needs to keep up to date with new gen mmos and needs the freedom in terms of hardware in order to compete.

I have access to teamspeak - but unless I consider the fight needs it(as in maybe a3s) I'll just say I won't join - have before and will in the future.

Now here's the fun bit... I play on PS4 - before that was on PS3 - I was doing all the raids and stuff and without voice chat. It's all dooable without.

It doesn't matter what you play on. The game works great on all systems. You don't require voice chat for like 99% of the stuff. It can make it easier at times but not required.

And as for the PC players prefer to team up with PC players and console with console - other than a few cases this just doesn't happen.

My experience is people will play with who they want to play - be it skill, friends, even in game race matters more than on what are you playing on...

Maybe it's just your server that has this issue. But my own experience is that nobody really ever gave much of a ... about what anyone was playing on.

Yes, in a way. Otherwise not really.
The game has lower graphics with low-res textures, reduced polycount etc. and the world isn't seamless like in 1.0. As for why FFXIV 1.0 was broken it wasn't at all only for the high graphics (although it was a factor), but because of how poor the engine and how poorly optimized the game was, pretty much releasing an unfinished game.

Moving to 2.0 and 3.0, I think there has been mention that consoles (particularly PS3) actually do hold them back on creating some concent and concepts they plan on implementing in the game and try to shift it to accomodate PS3 players or just scap it.

Console players however are still a large part of their players, meaning if they actually discontinue console compatibility (PS4 including) then they would definitely lose a lot of players, and a lot of money. Though we don't actually know how much people are playing on the PS3, but if it's a small amount that's considered safe to neglect them to discontinue, then there's a good chance they will soon. I think it won't be for long since the game doesn't really run that well on PS3 anyway (like less than below average) and that the PS3's era has ended (or ending).

Yes mostly UI elements though some other things as well. I used to be on PS3 now I'm on PS4 and the first thing I noticed was that the UI on the PS4 is the same as on the PC so there really isn't a limitation there.

The high quality graphics and such and high poly - you know you've got problems when a single plant in a pot has a higher poly count vs the player model(1.x reference). But I don't mind if they do release optional high quality textures to PC users. Knock yourself out if you want.

Why not a seamless world that's completely unique? Every MMORPG out there seems to be able to create a seamless world without copy and pasting (excluding the instanced based ones).

That moment when you are in a duty group with a person playing on PS3 and they lag behind, and cannot follow or do their share. It's kind of a torture. For everyone.
On the other hand, I wish I could design my character kind of like in ESO. That was amazing. You still keep your race features (like a certain face shape) but you have sliders for almost everything on your face.. Ahh..

However Japanese developers are warming to the PS4 and as more games are made for their home market, more Japanese gamers will transition to the PS4. I'd hope, as I am sure would SE, that PS4 hit's critical mass in Japan this year and starts to replace the PS3 quickly thereafter. That will open the way to dropping development of the PS3 client.

Go back and read my posts, I pointed out that I have a laptop PC that's not terribly old. It's a full blooded 4 core i7 with hyper threading (shows as 8 cores), 8GB of Ram, and an nvidia mobile GPU. I'd consider that a decent PC for pretty much anything. As far as this game is concerned though, it barely meets the same game performance as the PS3 does thanks to the comparatively poor GPU. If they boost the game requirements a bit more it will not be the CPU or RAM that prevent people from accessing the game it will be the on-board GPU that they can't trade out. Desktop users have the flexibility to put down a hundred dollars or more for a new graphics card. Users of laptops, Mac books, and many consumer PCs lack that flexibility.

I'm fully aware that you can't cater to low end hardware forever, but with an MMORPG, you almost lock yourself into supporting hardware that becomes low end over time due to power creep.

Why would that be the case? unless they alter the character and gear models so much that the PS3 client can't display them, as long as PS3 players never leave the 2.X & 3.X zones, their client never need know that anything in 4.X exists. If you locked down the PS3 client, and put it into containment so there were no changes except fatal bug fixes, would you suddenly stop being able to launch the game and access the games you already paid for? I don't think so.

The game runs server side, the client only handles the local processing. As long as the PS3 player stays within the existing 3.X and 2.X, nothing changes for them. Even if the game on the server supports a new client for 4.0, and that new client adds capabilities that the PS3 client lacks, it won't alter the performance of the PS3 in ARR or HW content.

no they wouldnt need to make exclusive servers. with they way they do expansions, you are mainly just buying the rights to go to the new area. all they have to do is make that right not buyable on ps3.ps3 would still get the data for items so they would display when partied with people from new zones, but wouldnt be able to get to the zone.

The answer is two-fold;

Graphically and performance wise, Consoles hold the game back. The game is made with weaker visuals to accomodate the consoles. This is something that's ok to disagree on.

However; the consoles also help the game. You'd be a fool to ignore the Console crowd of FFXIV, regardless of your distaste for them. They bring in extra money, and that's good for the company that is Square Enix.

Still, given the option, assuming there would be no dip in quality (heh), I would choose not to have PS3/4 players. No disrespect to them - there's just too many without a keyboard or who use excuses of their console as a shield and excuse. I'd rather people be on a unified platform.

PC players with controllers and PC players on less than ideal PCs are gonna get you for this.

You want a unified platform? OK, which CPU and GPU are you going to lockstep people into? A unified platform is a platform that is the same for everyone (just like a console), rather than the current situation where the game scales to the hardware you have. You're actually advocating consoles by asking for a unified platform.

That's known already since they've already mentioned they won't be discontinuing during 3.x but in a future expansion, and that by discontinuing I meant what you've exactly said. When it happens then they won't have PS3 in mind for future updates.

Dropping PS3 doesn't mean they should only focus on improving the graphics, but it would give them more opportunity to improve on the accessibility and convenience of the game, like improving the game's UI and other interfaces for example, and to develop content they had in mind that somehow couldn't have happen because of the PS3 holding them back.

PS4 isn't even holding the game back at all, and it would be ridiculous if they ever did discontinue it so early in its life. I never had the idea that it was actually a hindrance and just included the PS4 in my statement because we're talking about consoles in general, not just PS3.

Fun fact.... My friends often think im a pc player and my fc..... And i always have to remind them im on ps4 and they are always suprised, and im always the last bugger to die in raids and often carry players around lol

People who use console for an excuse for there own screw ups needs to stop, i have ran into a few of this people and i do bite them for it

There are a lot of players and even world firsts who use controller set up to win, controller is just as fast as mouse and keyboard, but players need to get it in there head that it a prefured style, for me controller is better because i hate mapping key to keyboards and using mouse D:

And those consoles players who take for ever to type.... Please get a usb keyboard it makes things a lot easyier to comunicate

I litterally use 36 buttons on AST with controller without changing tabs

8 = L2

8 = L2 +R2
8 = R2 + L2

You can say the same thing about PS4/PC only bringing much more profits than PS3 users because of how it's a next gen game and the major improvements that couldn't be done on a PS3. Everybody who has a PS3 is most likely going to get a PS4 anyway so it doesn't really effect anything long term.

This whole PC vs Console is absurd...

Back when FFXIV 1.0 was released, it was the PC version that failed.
Yes, the PS3 cant run as much as a PS4 and PC. but they already said that PS3 wont be around forever. The PS4 runs better then most PC... And crying because the PS3 wont allow for giant airship battles, and open world fights... Firstly, everyone would do them for a month, then never touch the content again unless forced to via relic... Second, just as people have stated before, not all PC are the most expensive super computer, so when console is removed, and now its because lower grade PC are holding the game back, what do u want them to do? remove those PC? increase the requirements to play the game? thats alot of money you want removed so you can what? have your butt back? have a giant dragon everyone can ignore?

When you say without a keyboard, you mean specifically for typing yeah? If not, well... I'm on PC and personally, I prefer to use a controller, since that is what I've been using for XIV ever since I started on the PS3. I refuse to use keyboard+mouse, as I'd become a terrible player (it's a completely different 'controller' I would have to learn and I can not be stuffed to learn something I'd use to play one game).

Both; and more realistically this arguement has always been lame, and now using "controls" as a way to argue for either side is even lamer.

Single player games don't have to worry about rendering and processing as much stuff on screen as an MMORPG, so there are more resources available for other things. Personally I think FFXIV's graphics are fine, except that it could benefit from having texture settings. (e.g. Low (PS3-like), Medium (Current), High (Better than current) )

The PS4 runs the game with the equivalent of High PC graphics, excluding shadows to some degree, tesselation and all that fancy stuff, it can also easily achieve 60fps. It can achieve even higher, but the console would overheat.

TL;DR PS3 sucks, PS4 no problem.

i think you got the wrong idea of what i was trying to say,

ofcourse ps4 can handle it but there is no way that it is going to be with DX11 like i said before it is a Microsoft software and either they have to improve somethings on the ps4 version or nothing at all but i can say that i am pretty sure

DX11 WILL NEVER BE ON PS4

i was talking about the DX11 the intire time not that there is or is not a possibility for there functionalities to be in the ps4 version
its just a microsoft software cant be used for a game thats on a sony console it wont be allowed
square can how ever update it if they ever want to do such a thing and the possibilities are there but just not with DX11

I don't think console are holding this game back, just look at how 1.0 turned out it was only crappy gameplay that caused the game to fail.
