I dunno... "Dat s**t be dangerous!" Lol
Seriously though I wouldn't mind seeing some hi-res art.
On a curious side note, am I crazy or is the tiny pic thing a growing trend on sites? Is this a mobile device choice or what?

lol JP title for shiva blog is "Sexy!" O.o at least that's what Google says
God knows, i love the FFXIV Forums Reps!
Always good for a laugh, keep up with it!
To the angry ppl: Ive not been much into programming stuff like that, but EVEN I did knew that this wasnt the final product/coloring...
I mean... really?
Atleast i finally do understand now, why they dont show stuff to us as early as possible... because of reactions like those...
Idiot, it's a normal map Zbrush model. There's more than enough info in the blog post to indicate the model is NOT. COMPLETE. It has yet to have actual textures applied.
I'm sorry, I try so hard to be reasonable. But please. Please please please please. COMPREHEND what you READ. Do you even know what zbrush is?
Soon enough they'll stop leaking works in progress because it attracts so much negativity because people, for some reason, Think they're finished.
I bow before her majesty, queen of the aurora!
...I mean ice.
Actually, I rather like this idea.Quote:

The fact that Fernehalwes had to even come in here to reassure everyone that it's a Work in Progress is just incredibly annoying to me.
Some of the posts on here are so uneducated. If you don't know what zbrush, "high res character model" "normal maps", or WORK IN PROGRESS means, what the hell are you thinking then? "I hate the way she looks, the concept art is way better!"
Are you kidding me?
I have a feeling you people just looked at the picture and didn't even read the post. Even then it should be obvious that it's incomplete.
These are the same people that complain when we don't get any info. We don't get info because things aren't done. When we're shown things that are incomplete, The dev team gets negative responses. It's a lose lose situation for these poor guys! They just can't catch a break. It just baffles me. The work in this Shiva model is outstanding. It's a lot of work to get it to where it is now. Which reminds me. The people saying "I guess she's okay." Do you know the work that goes into this?
I just couldn't be a moderator. Fernehalwes, I commend you and everyone on the team for your tremendous amount of patience.
Thanks Ferne :) Can't wait to see Shiva in action.
To everyone else complaining about the pics...

Awesome work on Shiva guys... gave me something spiffy to update my personal blog with.
And thanks to Ferne for the comments on page 23 or so... I've since established a perfect method of ignoring the "whinging-type" of posts.
Nah, there is no reason we have to be 100% satisfied with whatever they show. Besides -most- people will be fine once they know it was a color scheme so the modelers don't burn their eyes out.
(The model detail is pretty awesome - I wonder how much of the hair detail will go into the final model... so much info could be in that lol, and the concept art is sexy chilly, I remember fighting Garuda and trying to get the "right angle" to capture her lol)
White knighters and Dark knights meeting for a beautiful confrontation... in a thread near you, every thread near you.
Model is quite good, but she should look more like shiva from FFVIII, so ... more cold blooded, azure color would do the trick. And one more thing, she needs to be more dignified (points out to Kuchiki Rukia's Sode no Shirayuki from "Bleach" series anime). Other than that, great work :)
Nice artwork, can't wait for the finished version!
I guess the next question is which tribe summons her?
I think Shiva looks amazing. Regardless of the color of her skin, and yes, it's painfully obvious she isn't finished yet -.- why is it that we all complain and complain when there isn't any news, and the second we get something everyone and their friggin' mom bites SE's head off. Be happy we get anything at all.
Just one last thing from me before I ditch this argument thread:
THIS (Shiva from Type-0) is why I was worried about the skin color.
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__...iva_Type-0.png
Sure, she has a nice tush, but her overall color scheme is simply too warm. I was worried the XIV devs were going to follow this trend, and simply had to give feedback. I know I can't rightly speak for everyone, but it's uncomfortable for fans when long-standing traditions like a cold-skinned Shiva are broken. The Double-Mint Shivacycle (in fact the idea of Transformer Eidolons in general) is the best example, as people continue to bring it up in the topic of unpopular summon designs.
Did you people honestly expect Shiva's hair to resemble tubes of clay in the actual game? I have no idea what zbrush is, or do any kind of graphical artworks and stuff, but common sense tells you that as a in-game model, that is far from what has been shown capable from alpha videos. Plenty of other signs from the pictures that it was a work-in-progress. I'm critical of some changes (crafting leve changes = ????) but the level of pessimism dripping off you people from just a picture is pathetically amusing. It's on the same spectrum of people using anime pictures for sexual satisfaction, except on the opposite end of the spectrum.
I'm not defending SE at all because this matter is entirely outside of SE's concern - it's the total bleat-as-a-sheep mentality the community has descended to I'm detesting. I'm very cautious and doubtful about some changes (shared gathering nodes? GCD? Where's the dungeon loot system shown?) but the majority here seem to find pessimism as your utmost pinnacle of online satisfaction.
Yes yes, 'it's just alpha' and 'it's just beta' are just illusions of excuses that doesn't really explain anything at all - there is ALWAYS room for feedback. But guess what - no matter how absurdly high your expectations of alpha and beta are going to be, THAT'S ALL THEY'RE GOING TO BE. Alpha and Beta versions of a game client that are in no way the final version. Trying to push an aspect during ore testing that should come only after all core system testings of a game (WHY NO MOD SUPPORT?) is pure folly. As there is always room for feedback, there is also a correct time and place for feedback.
Seriously, it's not hard to pick up signs. If you can't be sufficiently skilled enough to tell it's a work-in-progress (not just the picture but pretty much ALL aspects of the game), then I don't think you will be sufficiently skilled to navigate a game such as this. And people wonder why SE needs to include 'hand-holding' in the game...
im gland they still working on it :D SE working really hard to get things done well :)
I have to state my opinion, because it's THE right one

How I see more comments on the already clarified matter
Ty Ferne for acknowledging the confusion and taking time to explain~!
Oh perfect diva of cold ice itself...
Chill me untill i die...
Ok, let me reply to this as it is one of my pet peeves on these forums.
I am sure most people realized these pictures were work in progress. I am not an expert in game design etc. and I know just about how to install a game to my PC but even I knew it is work in progress.
But yes I still posted that I didn't like the model... because well... I didn't like it - and *shock horror* even after the "clarification" that it was work in progress I still don't like it. I think her face is somehow off even if it was green or red or made of sparkling ice.
I think it is really ignorant for people to start calling everyone who disagrees with something as trolls, idiots etc. when they just give their honest opinnion about something. Should we all just have a forum where we all say "omg it's awesome"?
I always look forward to new sneak peaks from ARR and I will keep giving my honest feedback about it. That's why I signed up for Alpha and Beta... Not to see things in advance and "ooh" and "ahh" with the croud when new pictures are released.
If I need to say something positive, I do like her body. Shiva is supposed to wear skimpy outfits (still looks a bit tera copy though) so I am fine with all the clothes etc.
Thanks to you guys, next blog post will have "Work in Progress" written in all caps, each letter a different color, rotating, font Comic Sans Serif 24 and inside a marquee tag.
This was funny, until I started crying. Yeah.... Truth be told though, I only recently started working with SVG, Illustrator, and other vector technologies recently and only for my own entertainment but I'm familiar with this type of idiocy.
On topic (and I can't believe that this is on topic), I don't mean this as a self-endoursement or bragging or anything of the type. However, I think the reason some people, including myself are getting so exhasperated over this particular incidence is that while it is perfectly alright not to know what ZBrush is (and that is exactly why I explained), it was the veritable mountain of complaints after it was explained to them by several people familiar with the process why they shouldn't be worried.
It's hard to prove credentials on the internent, but I think we did a pretty servicable job between the four of us of explaining the problem. The fact that people continued to just keep bringing up the same issues over and over after that was extremely frustrating.
Actually no a lot of people thought she was gonna be looking just like that if you read the first few comments, and this is not the first time this happened. I mean Bey had stop using big words in his post cause people misunderstanding things a real shame people gotta type more words cause the common sense factor is completely gone.
Hey guys the notes say we don't regen mp while in combat they nerfed mages so hard!!!!! man i miss that thread.
Edit: Nvm, already explained. I wish we could make a zbrush show off thread :(
<_< >_>
This is a dinosaur, my first project I have been working on. For FFXIV...yeah FFXIV dinosaurs.

I agree, that the colors looked weird and fleshy for Shiva. However like he said in the Dev Blog they were testing the normals. Meaning Normal Maps which gives the character the look of having more polygons of a higher end model than it actually has. Shiva when she is textured properly is very light in color and would make it incredibly difficult to see the gentle blending in shading of a normal map. So she is darkened in and textured in contrasting colors to make it easier to see the subtle differences in shading. This is why Fernehalwes made the comment of keeping designer's eyes from bleeding! :D
When she's finished she will look like the concept art. Despite being only work in progress she does look really good! Almost like a Elzen thats really cold but you can still see the blood under her skin and slight blue hue around her lips and skin because.... well she's ICE COLD BABY!
Indeed~
Even after all this, we will still have posts who will complain about color choices... They should just desaturate the images completely to save any further explanation or headache.
On the topic of the model itself, I was thinking that the proportions of the sculpt don't quite match the art (head is too big, legs are too small..) but then I remembered that she will be quite large in scale, and the proportions from a player's perspective should make her look almost exactly like the art.
The artists are creating a digital version of the proportion illusion found in Michelangelo's David

That's because everyone, including the reps, using logic to explain her coloring or anything else incomplete for that matter is just being a blind fanboy. We shall see after beta. In the end, Shiva will be flesh colored, the lighting will look worse than 1.0, jumping will cause anarchy in the streets, the character creation options will be extremely limited, questing will kill us all via boredom, no one will ever explore anything ever, and the animations will be uncomplete, unblended, and choppy.
Oh yeah,... that grass will probably suck too. o-o
/display sarcasm off
x-x; I feel like a little kid on the way to the toystore waiting for beta. >< "Are we there yet?"
Pretty much this, that and people labeling us as "blind fanboys" or defending "SE" or "attacking their opinions" was more irritating. Especially as a person just trying show people what normal maps are and what they do visually, due to the quote on the original blog. "(This is normal map sculpt data created using ZBrush for those of you keeping track)"
So I wanted to contribute to anyone not knowing what this meant in a visual way. (Not to brag, not to be condescending just to inform that was my goal.).
Re-linking again for anyone interested...

I do mechanical modeling so I don't have extensive knowledge of zbrush -- but I do use it. I use normal mapping all the time and often "color" my more complex models for a few reasons.
-visually separate material types (Wood, metals, glass etc... )
-to help mentally separate and simplify more complex models. (400 objects in a scene can start to make you dizzy and get lost)
-It makes me excited to see colors starting to get put on, even if they are not accurate it starts to make me feel like my model is coming to "Life"
(I'm not here to debate colors or to justify what was shown on the blog. I'm only here to give you insight into what I do and I see some of my peers do as well. It doesn't really matter if it is the case here or not, you can take it or leave it.)
Related to the actual model its self, I also don't care for the facial proportions all too much, and am curious to see how the hair will be handled.
To be fair others -were- attacking them. Though I appreciate the background on the coloring. I've only done models so simple I didn't need colors to work with - so if they had colors they were DONE or pretty much done lol.
Really was only obvious once explained - but people felt like insulting others besides that point. "So obvious cant believe it needs to be said", yes so lets go talk about a subject you know little about and I'll tell you how stupid you are being in comparison to what I know (figurative you, not you you :P).
That I read, you never did this, so like I said, definitely appreciated the kind tips - but the flip side is far from lily white and I dont think that helped the discussion lol.
Subjective. Her face looks fine. Again, it's a work in progress and it's not necessarily just going to be color changes.Quote:

You know, I won't be suprised if they don't show us any more behind the scenes stuff after this because of all the ignorant people complaining about something they don't understand- This, my friends, is why we can't have nice things.
Really though, to be fair, Ferne preceeded the set of images with
and concluded them withQuote:
(The following images are works-in-progress, and do not fully represent what will appear in-game)
in addition to providing a comparison to the concept art they're aiming for, yet people still chose to treat it as if it represented the final product.Quote:
(This is normal map sculpt data created using ZBrush for those of you keeping track)
I mean I know virtually nothing about Zbrush, but even I could reasonably gather that it was being sculpted and wasn't finished yet. Ferne didn't put disclaimers there for nothing.
That "this is a WIP" was added after Ferne responded to everyone.
And even then there is no logical reasoning why someone would -expect- those colors to be there and not be the real ones unless they were told it was so the modelers eyes dont burst - which was something I always wondered anyways (how do they look at a big gray block for so long and not cry) lol.
"It doesn't look like the concept art"
Isn't sufficient reason to think those are not the real colors
"It doesn't look like X"
Isn't sufficient reason to think those are not the real colors
"Its in alpha"
Isn't sufficient reason to think those are not the real colors
Literally - its not obvious.
People with experience in that realm may know whats going on (and a few politely described it, thank you to those people :) ), and then there are people who like to assume their opinions are facts "obvious because I feel so".
Thus, thanks (again) to the posters who take the time to explain it to the ignorant (ages 13 to whatever???), in a nice and comprehensive way.
It's comforting, though, knowing how colourful our world is. All sorts of people with different opinions and taste in it, but I'm always a bit surprised in a warm and fuzzy way when I come across, cue the heavy quotation marks, someone who "knows it all".
