Oh god that twitter post is weapons grade cringe, calling on other VAs to step down from roles and targetting them because of their gender identity.

Uhhh? I thought Varshahn sounded fine? Same with Zero. It was Zero's insufferable personality and constant fedora tipping that annoyed me.
This is much more people that is judgemental that makes fuss about this...
Wuk Lamat is absolutely awesome, cute as heck as well... and strange in a way that is just loveable... and even makes one go like what.. a few times.. I think she is awesome and also what this game is needing.
Embrace new things and new ways... I mean I for once don't like Alphinaud, Estinien or Emett Selch... and makes me question them, however I tolerate them and know they play a role as well that is important.
...siding with Alisaie when Alphi is drowning somewhere and she will be saying its nothing about him or something.
There was so much criticism over this, but when I played through 6.55 the thing I actually minded least was the voice acting. It was a bit awkward, but it feels like the kind of awkwardness that would be fixed by just... playing the role more. It sort of reminded me of how in Final Fantasy 10, the voice actors (VA) are really really scuffed at the start, but you can kind of tell by the end of the first act or whenever it is that Auron gets introduced, that lots of the VAs are getting into their roles and finding their footing. Out of all the things I take issue with in 6.55, the voice acting is the one area where I'm actually hopeful that it'll get better with time, practice, and feedback. Sorta saw it with all the prominent characters in 6.55. These are characters who don't get much screentime in general, let alone much voiced screentime. So I noticed Krile sounding really robotic and stilted, like the VA for her just needs to sorta warm up a bit. And I noticed it with Erenville as well. And with Wuk too. But I genuinely think this is an area where we'll see improvement over time if the VAs listen to feedback -- even if it's just from other VAs on staff.
The actual story writing leading into this, though....... idk, man. If we're going to be inserting ourselves into a steppe style tournament where the winner seizes control of a nation, I think it required more buildup than a .5 patch.
Mao agrees. If gonna be contest between differents groups Scions, Mao wants some build ups so Mao can get ready to burninate Thancred. After way hims treated Ryne for so long in ShB, Mao plannings to scortch hims butt. Now maybe Devs will give official excuse for Mao to go after hims.
Hmmm, not really. This is more directed at your general negativity here and elsewhere. How it seems to be targeting the posters themselves, rather than just the VA (which is fine if you do not think their voice work was good/fantastic).
Like someone could say one thing defending the VA, not quoting you at all or even talking about you (they could be talking about the tags in their thread) and then you'd swoop in and post something looking like you were personally attacked.
I saw a video with the english voice acting and i find it good. It do not know what is wrong. The voice actor speaks very clear and understandble.
Cheers
I am honestly going to blame it on whoever the VA director for her is. I went ahead and listened to a couple of the VA's other roles and she sounds like a solid VA. She's had another Hispanic-sounding role before and sounded just fine to me. It sounded more like a pacing issue to me in some of her lines as Wuk Lamat. That being said, I do agree that if they want a character to have a specific accent, it's usually better to have someone who has plenty of experience with it (or just naturally has it) as it can be a challenge enunciating certain words in a way you're not used to. I like her so far but do think some lines should be re-recorded. I want to hear more before making a final opinion on her voice acting in this particular role.
After finishing the MSQ her VA grew on me. I think as she gets more fleshed out in DT and more voice lines it will only get even better.
I too found the voice to a bit grating and unfitting as I was expecting a more authentic "Carribbean" accent. I was hoping for a more Jamaican type voice myself and one VA I think would do a good job at that, is Hillary Hawkins.
But I have played XIV since 1.0 and the voice acting back then was not as good as today. Lyna, Emet, Ardbert i think are my absolute favs.
I do not mean to sound disrespectful of the current voice actress, just I felt the voice didnt fit the character unlike how I found Lyna's Icelandic accent perfect :)
The voice is still terrible, and I don't appreciate people who leave transphobic tags on my topic. I also don't appreciate folks going out of their way to dismiss every criticism as being irrelevant. If a customer is unhappy, they have a right to voice their complaints.
Also I wish the forum wouldn't restrict how many times I can post a day, that'd be great.
I feel people would have been a lot less critical toward you if you hadn't suggested SE should fire/replace her (that comes off as very entitled). When I read that, that's when I immediately dismissed your opinion because that's just a really awful thing to demand.
Like, blame the director, not the actor. Arc Rise Fantasia is a good example of seemingly no direction whatsoever. Normally I'd use Chaos Wars as an example, but I think the story behind that is the English team just hired their family to voice the characters...
Absolutely this, and this is the problem with all of these "criticism" threads -- it's not criticism, it's some outlandish demand that affects another person's livlihood. She hasn't even had a proper chance to prove herself.
At best, it's selfish. At worst, it's irresponsible.
I just don't know how people can be so entitled.
The fanbase seems to have the idea that screaming and threatening gets you what you want, when in actuality it's an open and reasonable discourse that tends to garner support and acceptance. Not a total surprise given devs of this game over praise the audience, plus the prevalence of cancel culture in general.
Can anyone change the tags? I'm new to the forums so I clicked on it and it seemed like I could but I didn't want to mess with it.
I did notice the change and it's a bit sad that people can sabotage threads by editing tags - at least that's what I assume what happened, given that I read a few people pointing them out as a sort of 'gotcha'.
I really do hate that the well for discussion about this topic has been poisoned, with any criticism being dismissed as being against the voice actor's identity, rather than the performance. Truth be told, I would not have known that about the VA if I had not read the forums or had been told about it otherwise, so when I say "something sounded off but I can't put my finger on why." It isn't a dig at the VA or anything, I just had trouble putting my thoughts into words because I don't have a lot of knowledge about the subject.
To try and elaborate further on my contribution:
One of the lines in particular I have is the threat to roast the bird on a spit, which I believe many would say is one of the weakest.
I understand that Wuk Lamat is meant to be a warrior woman, and I have seen that as a point to dismiss criticism as people not liking warrior women but I do; I'm a viera, after all.
However to me, I think the VA tries too hard to be boisterous. Some of the lines are delivered in a very loud manner, and it seemed almost as if it is overcompensating for something, but as for what I couldn't say. I will have to watch through the cutscenes again and see if my impression changes.
I do like the character of Wuk Lamat, and enjoyed the interactions she has had with the others, especially Erenville. Despite her boisterous behavior, it is very clear that she is timid deep down and has some entertaining moments which I found cute. One could even argue that this overcompensation is part of her character, to put up the 'tough guy' act to appear strong which is totally fine if people believe that, and honestly I could see it but that doesn't mean that to me the delivery felt off.
Which is why I am happy that people have brought up the voice director.
I had thought about mentioning it in my initial post, but I wasn't really sure what the position was called and didn't want to make anything up for the sake of argument. I knew that VAs are instructed on how to deliver lines, as least to my knowledge.
Am I asking for the VA behind Wuk Lamat to be fired? Of course not.
All I wanted was to add my voice and say, "Yeah, something sounded off to me too but I hope that when Dawntrail releases everything is better."
Which is what was my initial post was about. There have been a few hit or miss voices in the game, some I've probably blocked out, and for good reason, but I don't intend on letting it ruin my excitement and anticipation for Dawntrail.
Only time will tell what will happen.
I immediately fell in love with Wuk Lamat, and a lot of that was due to her voice acting.
And considering how overhwlemingly positive her reception has been everywhere that ISN'T a handful of threads on the official forums, I'd say that's a widely shared sentiment.
Your opinion is still valid, but you must understand you're in the minority and so calls for a recasting come off as especially harsh and unwarranted.
Being a "pessimist" about serval things in this game (mostly job design), I don't really want to be lumped with people complaining over one VA, which honestly I think she did a good job as the VA from my perspective. The Idea that this is a big "issue" seems a bit odd... People can have valid concerns and all, I sure love ff14 hence why I complain a lot about things that I want to see improved.
I don't think everyone who dislikes the voice is automatically trying to be disingenuous but it's very obvious theirs overlap with some of those people just outright being phobic here, it's pretty easy to realise that. It certainly reflects on a lot of people here who do post disingenuous "feedback" which is sadly common. Which effects people who actually want to talk about issues that could be improved about the game.
I'm gonna assume you want me to focus on the link, yeah?
Right. It's wrong/unprofessional to demand someone be fired/replaced. If you thought I'd turn around and say "well that's different." Nah mate. I understand where Sena is coming from, but it's still unprofessional, even if it's for accurate representation.
Much like how it's wrong and entitled of Karious to demand Sena be fired for supposedly doing bad voice work for Wuk Lamat. That's something that should entirely be on the director/coach whatever.
Because it is entitled and the blame is being unfairly thrown at someone who most likely wasn't given proper direction (which also seems to be missing for Krile and G'raha. You have to admit they sounded... off this patch). When one side is saying "fire her, her voice is bad!" and another side is saying "she did a good/fantastic job," you don't just invalidate one side and immediately fire someone willy nilly (workers rights and all that). You discuss on how to improve and what could be done better next time. If people were immediately fired because a customer was dissatisfied with the service given to them, then... well, we wouldn't really have games, fast food/restaurants in general, cleaners, nurses, doctors, drivers, pilots, retail workers, etc.
And like I said, Sena was being unprofessional as well. I get where she is coming from, but it's still wrong.
If I order a pizza and its made wrong, I'm going to order another pizza. The pizzeria shouldn't make me keep the incorrectly made dish and tell me I need to give it a chance. I don't know why this is any different.
That's when you call them, provide evidence that what you ordered was incorrect (usually a photo + receipt) and then get a refund (or get a new pizza sent your way). Also note that this is something that is only affecting you personally because you're using a pizzeria as an example and not something that affects thousands of people at the exact same time (patch day).
Mind you, I'm Australian. We have consumer laws where the customer has the right to demand a refund. Dunno about America.
That's not how this analogy works.
For your analogy to work, you would have to call the store, ask to speak to the manager, and demand the person who made the pizza gets fired.
That is what you are doing. You are not asking for another pizza. Asking for another pizza would be asking for another line read.
