Well for one, the assets already exist if an NPC is wearing it; there's just a decent chance that it doesn't function as seperate gear pieces, depending. Would I pay for something like Garlean armor, because I think it looks cool? Yes. It'd require them to model it for one or two other races though, so they won't. No, it's because SE's President - personally - hates FFXIV players and wants them to suffer, knows from internal metrics that 100% of FFXIV players say housing is their main draw of the game, and instead wants to shaft us all by funneling money out of FFXIV housing and into other games that all lose money and forces Yoshi P to go along with it. I think instanced housing is a good suggestion, and probably the only thing that would allow supply to meet demand for personal housing. As to what they could look like, well, they already have apartments - why not expand them to include an outdoor balcony, and allow players to upgrade for an appropriate gil fee to a small house interior, a medium house interior, or a large house interior? Those interiors already exist in the game, so the balcony is the only new piece they'd have to build from scratch. I feel like such a system would satisfy a lot of people, and you could have it alongside the existing wards, as it already is.

To counter shell fcs taking up multiple plots, why not put access to workshops somewhere outside of housing? For example, a door at Cid's workshop that can be unlocked with the gil cost of a small house + workshop.

I've seen both of these things suggested multiple times, but we still don't have an explanation for if/why they wouldn't work. I'm really curious to know what stops them from implementing things like this.

What I'm also right about is how little they add back into the game. There is not really a right answer to the housing system. The placard was horrendous. The lottery gets abused. Instanced houses makes it no different from your semi-deserted island called “sanctuary”. Having unlimited houses and giving them away to anyone that walks in and pays for one isn’t the solution either, although it would make pointless for those abusing the system and collecting entire wards just because.

Increasing the amount of houses one can bid, similar to the three weekly Cacpot tickets, could improve perception, in a sense, of one’s chances of success.

However exploitation is still here. It will always allows abuse by players paying multiple subscriptions and reselling the FC to whoever is willing to pay 10-1000x more than the actual plot value, then selling the gil for real money and cashing out to cover his/her expenses with the extra subscriptions. And to that, nothing much can be done: it is still a paying subscriber, regardless of where the payment comes from - including from the same bank account.

And if they truly, really, deeply want to fix this housing problem, then they have to go a much deeper rabbit hole: ask for valid government ID during account creation, so they can ensure multiple subscriptions from the very same person isn't allowed to buy more than one house in that realm. Which they never would pursue it: first, for legal reasons; second, for data security reasons; third, it would impact their revenue.

IMHO SqE has to first learn how to make the game dynamic, removing the loading when moving from zone A to B in an adjacent region, before they can tackle a more dynamic housing area with many more plots per ward, able to scale with how many houses are being demanded from players. Then the plot limits could be reviewed and more zones added into that ward, able to expand how many plots are available and therefore how many more houses are available.

That, and players learning not everything solves with the swipe of a plastic thing, and patience is a virtue.

And yes, I lost the lottery for the plots I bid on. Both personal and for the FC I’m in.

I won 2 houses (1 FC, 1 private) with the new system w/o much effort. I love the new system.

I just checked on my server and at least 3 wards in the Goblet alone were owned by a single player each. As well as several mediums and larges being available. I know you're going to fire back with "underpopulated server" yet Spriggan is one of the most populated on my data center so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯*.

This would just amount to a trick. It's not really helpful, and doesn't cover the case where you potentially win all 3, so it really is just a perception. I suppose it'd give you a shot at bidding on 2 and waiting till the last second to bid on a 3rd one, or putting all your money in on one plot, but that'd benefit the players with stupid amounts of gil over everyone else. I disagree about the deserted island feel. Just because it's not in a ward, which at this point generally serve as ghost towns anyway, doesn't really mean that it's any less deserted. You can visit other peoples islands, the difference is the fact that you can decorate it. Basically all of this is about being able to decorate; using the furnishings that exist and the opportunity to be creative with it. What the end result for that would likely be, worst case; is that if they existed alongside eachother, the people who abuse it would take up more space since they don't have to contend with the playerbase in its entirety. Which isn't great, admittedly, but at least the people who genuinely play and want to participate aren't being left out in this case. Making this kind of change and untying the company workshop from owning an FC house would also make it so there's no incentive for people to do this as well outside of just being an ass. Then you could actually define it as harassment, or griefing; at the cost of the economy of submarine rewards.

The latter part is kind of an entire engine overhaul. When they say that the fact that they don't have a persistent world because of Ps3 limitations, this is actually one of the only cases where I actually believe them. I wish it wasn't like that, but it is. I'm not against the feeling of a neighborhood, the reason I suggest instanced housing instead of anything more involved like an adapting ward is because instanced housing does exist, it just sucks in its current form. (Apartments.) Even something like a ward with plots where everyone can place a large on it wouldn't totally be a solution because the plots would still be outnumbered by the players. So, in theory, I agree with you; just like I'd agree with anyone who came up with any solution that provided everyone the opportunity to buy a house of the size they want. I just think instanced houses would be easier, since you're rarely going to encounter your neighbors anyway.

If the belief is truly that these people are really the reason none of this can work, then I think you guys should be arguing for GM action. It's still just another thing they aren't doing.

Regardless, you are right in saying that the system they started out with was very inferior and prone to abuse. Which is exactly what happened. Even if it was "legitimate", it was scummy and led to entire wards being taken over by one individual. Since then, they did implement measures to keep people from buying new houses. They deemed that players with multiple houses could keep them, they just couldn't buy any more. Right now you can only have access to 1 personal house, 1 apartment, 1 FC house and be a tenant in up to 3 other private houses you do not own (obviously). Those are the measures that are in place currently. And I'm pretty sure they were when Spriggan was implemented? I could be wrong tho, I'll leave that up to Corvus to fact check :p

As Corvus said. The Neighbourhood thing sounds lovely in paper, but it's horrible to execute. Logistical issues, network issues, you name it. There's a lot going into the assets required to making our current iteration of housing into a proper neighbourhood that can meet the demands of (for argument's sake) everyone. Even if they waited, I doubt they could prime it any better. Features we currently have would likely not be implemented. Chances are that what we'd get would look very, very differently. And that's not getting to costs and approval, because simply making this is very demanding. Especially in a growing fanbase they didn't realize would grow this much, nor in the span of time that it did! The moment you drop this concept on the table, the guys above you will ask how much it costs to develop it, and at that point they'll say it's not sustainable.

Not saying that this system is sustainable either. I mean... QED: Threads upon threads whenever housing becomes available!

What I am saying is that at some point we need to draw a line. And unfortunately, this was the line SE drew. It is possible they could have gone further. But they didn't. And this is what's led to. Past that, it's really just a matter of restrictions and implementing fair systems, which so far attempts have yielded negative results either way. Either because it was exploitable, either because it promoted an unhealthy playstyle or because it was just unfair.

If you win all three, you can only claim one; maybe when you pick them, you pick them in your preferred order. You win one of the three, other entries are forfeited, you are refunded for them and whoever was second on those you automatically abided, automatically win it, and it goes until all lotteries are end. This also adds the option to bid on different locations and wards - it doesn’t need to be all on the same ward.

On wards being deserted, I agree. There is really no incentive for one to be active on a residential ward. After you decorate it’s outside, other than the weekend RP nights, which most of the time happens indoors anyway, it is a shame it being so underutilized. However IS are a thing only because it is fresh. Give it a few more months and not even you will be going there that often anyway. Just as duties that won’t pop up on a roulette.

Everything else discussed aside of the engine overhaul goes back to how to allow one house “per human being” vs “per subscription”.

And the gil making via submarines is sort of clever, yet completely pointless. Not to diminish his accomplishment but to keep it long term is too much disposable money for something you can’t really directly recoup. But as the song goes, “mo money mo problems”, and even the big fall.

Perhaps SqE could implement a way to expand your plot, as done with the island? That would make a lot of folks happier. You buy what’s available, do a simple quest, pay a difference and expand your property. Even Animal Crossing has this :D

You're right. Though, it still benefits wealthy players more than anyone who can just afford the plot, and that's my gripe with it (unless you don't pay for the bid). They were trying to avoid giving people the option to forfeit and bait bid so they couldn't mislead other players during the bidding process. All in all, though, the lottery system isn't the solution. In the end what I think this would honestly do is just make it so that whatever house you bid on has 6 bids instead of 3. The probability still more than likely works out, give or take, unless people aren't bidding on the same house (which they might, if they want a plot in particular).

On IS, I already don't go there. I kind of maxed it because of how passively I could do it and then I got enough of the cowries to buy anything there but didn't end up wanting any of it anyway. During that launch I also took note of how little it actually impacted anything, despite being an instance tied to the housing server. In my worst case scenario, I had to make 1-3 extra attempts to enter my island. Sub 30 second inconvenience. It's part of why I'm sure an instanced house would be a non-issue. If people already aren't spending time in their wards, or even in IS to a debilitating extent; they aren't going to be sitting in their houses 24/7 for the sole purpose of making the server crash, lol

I don't know what they're doing with it. It honestly wouldn't be the first time a middle-aged adult with a lot of expendable income and no other hobbies did something like this. It happened in ArcheAge too. The practical thing would be RMT. Some people, like the ones on Mateus, iirc, just want their own ward. Not that it matters. Again, while I hate multi-boxing and having multiple accounts for the purposes of circumventing account restrictions, there really is very little you can do against someone determined to circumvent them. You put one barrier up like that and the next thing you know the guy is asking his grandparents for their driver's licenses. I wouldn't put it past the people on Mateus to do something like that either. The best thing to do is to just make it really, really expensive for people to do so and remove all the incentive. Who knows, maybe the people on Mateus wouldn't have even done it if they didn't have to have neighbors in the first place?

Unfortunately, this isn't the case everywhere; and people aren't bidding on smalls because they're inadequate anyway. People shouldn't have to move to foreign data centers to get any size house, and they especially shouldn't have to do it for a small.

I was refering back to when housing was first implemented. There may be enough now, but there were barely 25 wards per location at first.

I actually seriously discussed the idea the other guy had. They'd have to rebuild the engine to make moving between cities seamless, as well as build huge new areas considering their actual size. Every single zone in the game, from the ground up, would have to go through level design. It wasn't contrarian, and I wished it was possible. My expectations of SE are just so low that adding instanced housing is just a step above what they've already just done. It was such a lazy, rushed "fix" they didn't even handle it properly when they made the change, with all the "0 wins!"
I even said I'd actually like the dynamic idea too. Anything that gives everyone an opportunity to own the size they want is fine. Adjusting plot sizes, adjusting apartment sizes, whatever. You actually haven't said shit other than "ban rmters" which is conclusively not the reason this is a problem, and "instanced housing won't work."

Each system they introduced has its downside.

When housing was first added to the game, it was first come first serve. You log in, run the plot, and purchase it. There was no invisible timer to purchase a plot once it got demolished.
Downside: You had to race against other players and RMT.

Then they added the invisible timer in hope of reducing the number of RMT purchasing plots as soon as they become available. That didn't work. It made a lot of players result to using 3rd party tools, and programmable buttons in order to join The Placard (Savage).

And most recently, they introduced the lottery system. In hope of making it fair for everyone (This includes both the players & RMT). Yet, this still falls in favor of RMT since RMT has multiple accounts (A whole team) that can bid on plots while the average player only has few alts at most.

I don't have time to calculate the odds, but I and four of my friends managed to purchase our plots when new wards were added to the game and the system was first come first serve.

Since I am pretty sure you mean me since I did complain about my large and its yard. I never said I hated the fact I couldn't make the yard to my liking for others to see. I honestly don't give a damn what other ppl think about my house or my large(no one sees it anyway bc you know NO ONE HANGS OUT IN WARDs!!!!!). A med to a large size room(with the item cap of those houses) to call my own and use as I please. Guess you just can't understand that since it seems like you really like showing off how smart you are when you really are not. You even put words in other mouths to try to prove your point. Like this time since none of my posts about my large ever said I care what others think about my yard. If anyone wants my large they can have it bc Im hoping in the next cycle Im gone from that trash goblet location and into a med in Ishgrad or somewhere else.

True - the Large plot oposite-right my Small was snapped up, as was the one oposite-above at the top of the steps - in fact, I talked to the friendly couple who were bidding on it and were 'standing guard' (for lack of a better term) over it during the hours leading the the auction period ending! :D

However the two small plots nearest mine are still free and had no bids last time I looked (yesterday).

Been there before, 3 houses lost, with 2 of them gone to some random who just came to spam click for like 15m before getting it vs me and few other who had been there for hours. Third house was lost to a relocator.

The old panel clicking system was the dumbest one. It was unhealthy and mind numbing to those trying to do it the legit way. Then, imagine having to take a short break or receiving a call the moment the timer expired. Many have real life obligations that do not allow them to play the game without interruption and stupidly click on a panel during hours.

I feel like people only want the old placard spam back because it'll limit how many people show up compared to the lottery and better their own odds. You're right, people have lives and shouldn't be forced to stand there for hours on end and having a life doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to get a house. The new system is better for giving everyone a chance who wants one and it's 100x better just on that fact.

And it's also better at making it agonizing to go pick up your gil at the placard when you just lost, after having waited 5 days for result, to then have to wait another 4 days to even bid again, and a whole 9 days to have the next results.

The odds of winning a house at a placard as one person agaisnt 50 is better than one person agaisnt 300 in lottery.

There was something called "Prime time", you never needed to camp a placard all day long, the prime time window was about 3 to 4 hours if I remember correctly in which the chance for the plot to sell was almost maximized. The people who camped all day long were doing it wrong.

Odds are very dependant on where you are server wise. When placard spam was a thing I rarely saw over 10 people at one in my old server. On my server now, it's either 1 person bidding against me or 0. So, in my case it's better as the lottery.

Also not to mention you don't need to literally avoid eating, drinking or using the bathroom the entire time out of fear of missing the chance to click. If that's not unhealthy to you then idk lol.

Not saying its healthy, I really am not, but it was still better than waiting an entire 9 days per cycle in my opinion, in any case the new worlds and wards seem to have fixed the housing crisis pretty much, so I think at this point it's a non issue, except maybe on Balmung and some select NA worlds, lottery and new wards did their job, and the people that still dont have a house are people that react as "but i want shiro and not goblet !!" when they see a large shiro with 50 bids and a large goblet with 3 bids and decided to bid on the shiro one.

People are too difficult, people want shiro or mist, while ishgard or goblet are almost completely deserted, and yet people complain that there's no houses, it really is self inflicted at this point

Also another thing I mentioned earlier I think in this post, send people their gil via mail, remove this walk of shame to the plot when you've lost it and the person is literally decorating it as you come by to pick up your money, it's really unnecessary and frustrating

ah the need of instant gratification and the joys of having unlimited free time! I’d rather spend two minutes of my time with the new system and play the game while I wait than dumb clicking a panel for hours. Anyway, I have a family, a job, properties to maintain and finding “just” 3-4 consecutive hours at a given time to click non stop on a panel is impossible. I’m sure that’s the case of many others too.

I don’t mind collecting my money from the placard if I lost. I don’t see what is shameful about it: it’s a random draw. Not everyone is a sore loser: I’ve recently helped a winner setting up his house as he was unfamiliar with the system. Someone did the same thing with me when I won my first house too.

But as others are saying (and I myself said in an earlier post) the only reason that it was, as you put it, "one person against 50" was probably that those 50 people were able to be online at that time to spam click the placard. The other 250 people, who likely wanted a house just as badly as everyone else, simply couldn't be online to spam-click and thus lost out on even the chance of trying for that house.

Again, if the old method of obtaining a house plot were still in place I would never had been given the opportunity to bid for one due time limitations, and I probably wouldn't have bothered even if I could have; I don't find the idea of sacrificing X amount of time (and being unable to do anything else either IRL or in-game in the meantime) obsessively repeat-clicking a placard even remotely appealing.

At least the new system gives every single person an equal chance. It's just pure probability and nothing else. It isn't perfect but at least it isn't broken like before.

And if you couldn't... Goodbye dreams of housing. Or if your connection lagged... Yeah I took my odds with lottery. Was decent amount of free Houses in Shiro where nobody bid since they weren't in the prime location. All it takes is to do your research... Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how the hell I want it to look like

I think the crux is really "time"
The placard folks don't want to wait over a week to know if they lost.
The lotto folks don't want to camp a spot for (at least) 4 hours.

Both arguments have merit to them - the lotto system does not move fast enough; and the placard system requires too much time committed.

Also the lotto system still punishes folks with less free time; because those that got the time can keep checking ensuring that in the end they can bid against the least competition.

That said I think it would be nice to..
1. Make the lotto system much shorter
2. Allow you to ask your retainer to place a bid on up to 3 choices of lot; using the gil you have on them. Your retainer would automatically bid on any of those lots based on the priority (1>2>3) allowing folks to bid that do not have time; while still keeping the lotto intact; while drastically speeding up the entire housing process.
