Soooo... this is something I've been considering for a while now, ever since the Warriors of Darkness first showed and particularly after finding out they were once Warriors of Light.
What if this whole thing is going to involve a "face/heel" turn for the Warrior of Light (the player)? I mean, the dialog in the trailer made several references to betrayal and switching allegiances.
What if there's a damn good reason the old warriors of light went dark? Something like maybe easing the strain on Hydaelyn or something?
Just a lingering fwelding of dread I'm having since the last time we got an in-cutscene bitch slap like this, we completely lost the blessing of light.
I actually wouldn't mind if we went rogue for a bit; we've been fighting other people's wars for a very long time now. I don't think it'll actually happen though.
Even if this doesn't pan out, I noticed the same connections (aka potential coincidences). Already, Sephirot's worshipers had temples that inspired Allag and eventually the builders of Qarn and so on through Belah'dia. Perhaps what survived through the ages was an amalgam of Meracydian themes. At the very least, the observations are solid Darksteelfoil Hattery, even if they end up completely unfounded.
Urianger's character keeps getting called into question, from rumors in 1.0 (started by the Circle of Knowing to distract Darnus) all the way up through meeting with the Ascian emissary (whereby he learned what he could and implied that he was a liar). Each time (so far), he's turned out to still be acting in accordance with what we've always been told he was: Louisoix's best, brightest, most loyal, and most socially awkward student.
I feel like if he was truly going to ally against Hydaelyn's best interests, it would have been earlier. He could have turned after Moenbryda's death when he met with Elidibus, he could have turned when confronted with the Gerun Oracles. He could have been more accepting of Li'lidibus (he refers to him as an ally "for now" while simultaneously speaking of the need for the Ascians to taste "lasting defeat"). What will have changed? Finally too much evidence for Elidibus' narrative? Was the loss of Minfilia the last straw? I wouldn't find it strange or unrealistic, but given his characterization (so far), I'd find it surprising. And if he did turn, I feel like he'd realize his mistake ere the end.
He's earned my trust for now, I think... I hope...
Of course, that all assumes I've not just chosen some very poor core assumptions about where the game is heading.
Predicting the big, general things - not my strongest area.
I hate to admit it, but I have voices muted for now. ARR had great choices for actors, but (imho, sadly) jarringly bad cuts of the lines. That drew me out of the game. And then all the voices changed. And that drew me out of the game. And now I can't even tell who's talking in a trailer. And if they changed between 2013 and 2015, what are the chances they'll change again? I'm afraid that just as I get comfortable with characters' identities again, bam, all voices will now be provided by Roy Dotrice.
I noticed, and then questioned myself whether that was accurate.
If other people are seeing it too, though, might as well whimsically theorize, right?
I'm reminded that Allag faced numerous rebellions on the home front and knew well the basics of summoning (hell, they invented summoners as a battle class, as far as we know). It's possible that one of the rebellions got involved with the eikon threat. However, the backstory has phrased it as "the beast tribes of Meracydia" over and over when it comes to the Warring Triad; ne'er a mention of the wandering races being involved. Could be a false lead; could bit a bit of forgotten history.
Hmm. Not much of value for such a long post.
Can we just talk about how the PR blurb mentions Sophia wanting to?Quote:
restore the realm to a ruinous equilibrium
Equilibrium, Kidlidbus, Primals... ruinous...
Took the words right out of my mouth.
You only have to look at the Binding Coil storyline to see that Urianger extended his loyalty to Louisoix towards his grandchildren, along with a good dose of affection. (He totally goes mother hen on them in his last appearance in that side story.) Its made clear he's an old family friend.
I have a hard time believing he'd side with the Ascians, if only because it would bring him in conflict with the twins, which in turn would be something of a betrayal of his old master. The twins are trying to fill the gap left by their grandfather after all, each in their own way. And again, they're practically family. It would take a *lot*, as in a Calamity-sized ton, for him to choose to pit himself against them.
I'm telling you, he's pretending to side with them so that he can learn their motives and then tell us what we have to do in order to stop them.
A good trailer cuts the lines/scenes in a way to make one hyped, in some cases by making one wonder "wait, is he going evil/To the enemy side?!". That is currently what I'm believing is happening with Urianger for now.
Derplander is the stand-in for the Player Character. The change to Dragoon does two things: 1.) Represents the shift to Heavensward (which also means the 4.0 trailer will have him changing to Monk.), and 2.) So if he ever appears for more then a few seconds in the trailers showing off the Edgeparty he looks sufficiently different from Edgelander so we know who is doing what. While the 3.4 trailer barely shows him he is seen atleast twice. Once very briefly when Thancred goes to meet Edgeladin's attack head-on, and then when he is shown being Holmgang'd by Edgelander. The first shot we see him as normal but he isn't the focus of the shot, the second time he is the focus of the shot but is greatly shadow'd. This might be because even with the job change SE realizes its just kinda wierd, but it also might be when our character is similarly chained up we will be cast in shadows as well.
IF Derplander actually exists in-game he won't be the Warrior of Light, but would most likely be used as evidence for the Warriors of Darkness being from and alternate Eorzea. Maybe with a little humor of us and allies thinking he is Edgelander and trying to fight him.
I never liked Urianger's 3.0 voice so I'm glad it got changed. We know Yugiri will change as well next time she shows up. Hopefully the whole cast won't change again in 4.0
As for his betrayal, there is definitely something we don't know about his dealings with Elidibus. He has always been the most enigmatic of the Scions, but he is not a bad guy.
Merlwyb and Raubahn getting recast were, I think, the biggest losses. Most other characters were good but not exceptional, but those two really just hit it home once 2.x let them improve; it helps that they were "new" voices to me (so to speak - I'd never heard either of their actors before) and as I said, hearing them improve over 2.x was quite enjoyable.
Stop stoking the flames! Back on track!
Err... I'm not expecting Urianger to betray us - he still has all that important EX Primal and Triad stuff to hand out and be involved with (until 4.0, at least), so we can rest easy. Still, with him meeting with Elidibus and that line, it has cast a shadow of a doubt.
Well... it just so happens that I've been playing lots of God Eater lately instead of my intended Yo-Kai Watch! weapon farming after a string of bad luck... and in 2 the scientist who puts together your squad and is benevolent-ish for 70% of the story eventually gets one of your teammates killed on purpose, simultaneously infecting your captain with a disease that eventually mutates him into an eldritch abomination after he quits the squad to help her develop robotic soldiers (isolating him from his compatriots who could help him).
It, uhh... it's that kind of story. But yeah, I'm kind of distrustful of others' motives right now because of that.
What is a "beast tribe"? Who's frame of reference is it that has been retold down the ages?
To make a point by example, our own history is littered with examples of European settlers referring to natives as savage and uncivilised races, human or no.
Similarly, it's quite a Garlean Thing to refer to the Ixal etc as "beastmen", implying that they are of lesser civility. This was a bit of a thematic in v1.0 that hasn't been re-explored as much as it could have.
And so I wonder, could the Allagans have referred to progenitors of the Miqo'te as beastmen? In fact, where did the Miqo'te even come from? I'm yet to see a single Allagan that fit's that description...
...except one.But they're a descendant of Allag, and have royal blood sufficient to operate the Crystal Tower, and not a Hyur.
Oh gosh, I'm heading down the rabbit hole again. Help!!!
Only got around to watch the English trailer now. Dialogue in the German one is pretty different again. Also our Masked Mystery Man seems to have the same VA as Ilbert in German

About your other post, I would say NO. There is a clear differece between Derplander and Darklander, we have talked about this already a lot of times, they arent the same person.
Another thing I want to add is why are we talking about new voice acting. This is old history guys, we already the new voice on Urianger and on eveyone else.
Arent we going to far off topic with this comments that had nothing to do eith 3.4 at all?
There is absolutely no significance whatsoever to the only non-Garlean we've met who can prove direct descent from Allag being a Miqo'te. None. Whatsoever. At all. It's a total coincidence with no bearing on the lore. And it's definitely never coming up again. Ever. These are not the droids you're looking for.
But seriously, until something happens in the MSQ to prove otherwise, the Crystal Tower (as we experienced it) is entirely non-canon, Cid and co. were simply elsewhere between 2.0 and 2.55 working on Manacutter tech, and Krile has taken on any future plot importance that aforementioned nonentity could have had in a universe where aforementioned nonentity actually ever existed.
I just hope that SE did choose the sequence of the speech on purpose so that we think that Urianger is on the other side. Because if its true than they just would have told us an important part of the patch so I still hope that he tells this to Elidibus, maybe after finding out that they nearly killed Alisae?
But its true the German trailer is quite different. No signs of betrayal and the last part is about the trade of a soul for a world. So maybe they were promised by Elidibus that if they kill us they will get their own world back? So they are kinda fighting for a good cause but the Ascians are just using them to get rid of us? I mean they catch us, tell Alphinaud (in the German trailer) to step aside and after that raise their crystal. Maybe we are the soul they want to use as a trade-in? Or maybe they want to save this world but were told that they need our soul for this? So they would do anything thats necessary to safe a world. Or one of the party members was saved and as a trade they have to end this world.
Hopefully we are not just standing there helpless. X_X Let this end with a instanced fight where nobody truly wins (three vs. five is not a good balance) and its end with departure of them..so our character would not be too strong but also not suddenly weak..
Ugh, was that scene with Papalymo holding Tupsimati a flashback, or is he returning? If the later, can't help but noticed Yda is missing... Please don't let my random speculation that Yda will be captured in some fashion... Take Papalymo instead!
Derplander and his group turning Primals against their tribes? Pretty good plan honestly... Use their own trump card against them and what will they do exactly? Faced against the Garleans, they could just pray harder... Now? Summon Titan and he kills you, dumb plan... End scene had them using Crystals of Light for something... Are they theirs, though? There's a scene with the Warrior of Light chained up by Derplander, time to lose our Blessing of Light again?! "Guide my hand, I pray you", who ya praying to there Derpy?
Who gave the Ixali steroids? Mistook that final boss for an Amalj'aa for a while... Summoning Garuda like Ultima Weapon? Wonder if that's a new form of summoning, one we could perhaps take advantage of as well? After Derplanders group is seemingly turning Primals against their tribe, you really cannot expect me not to bring up Free Company Primal Summoning, can you? As I say every bloody patch, "maybe they're finally justifying it in the lore!"
Living Flame as out referential boss this time? Every patch has had one, kinda lame though, considering we already practically had him in Gordias... Final boss looks like a tiny version of the guys from Bravely Default... I'll now find it unacceptable if he doesn't say "S-splendid!" upon defeat...
Sophia... Thank you SE... I had a long rant about content ready a few days back, but it really had little to do with lore, but I was going to mention how I wish more Trails were like Steps of Faith (pre-nerf) and/or Turn 9, Sophia potentially looks like Turn 9, where the battlefield will change to kind of tell a story? It's the best SE can probably do with "Here is a square/circle, fight in it", so I'm glad to see more going on with Sophia than Sephirot... Most of the narrative in both fights is still probably going to come from the songs though, shame... Really wish we could get more stuff like Steps of Faith... The actual fight alone told me Dravanians were dangerous, Vishap was unique and the tense atmosphere it was originally tuned to was a damn near perfect set up for Heavensward...
Alexander, likewise, looks more involved... Actually starting outside and fighting our way to the top and in? Awesome. A lot of people are shouting "It's Ark!" at that one boss, but it has a passing resemblance to Mobile Type 8 IMO... I mean, it turns into an Airship, so... It's Ark! Although going back to my non-existent rant... Yay, another case of mechanics trumping narrative! He lets us jump on him, presumably to avoid some form of attack... Slotting him in with Xandes and his ilk for now, how am I meant to take bosses seriously when they actively help us like this?
Guy in the mask is Ilberd... Seem to remember that voice from the instance where we recuse Raubahn in 3.0, it's... Distinctive...
Guessing Palace of the Dead is to Tactics Ogre what Crystal Tower is to Final Fantasy III at this point... Wont get my hopes up for it as an event though, already been told its very grindy, and while 1-50 had some interesting things to discover (namely other dead NPCs), it really didn't have a lot going on... Would be nice if you could also find some random bits of lore lying around, kinda like with Dusk Vigil and other dungeons like it... Quite a lot they could fill it with, Amdapori lore, Gelmorra, and this necromancer... Shame the actual event is barren, just the story at the end of it... Sigh, if only we could get more events that actually have a narrative in doing... Besieged was so great at that, it wasn't some lame instance in which you're told the world is at stake... You were actually defending a city, you did it to defend the city... Not once did the game need to tell you that the area was a battlefield, you experienced the fact that it was... XIVs really lacking that kind of mix between gameplay and narrative... Even Sophia, as hyped as I am for her, is mostly getting exposition via song, not the actual sequence of fighting her...
For me it looks like they are doing the same kind of summon when shiva came to life
Given the scene with Papalymo has the sepia filter normally used in flashbacks... yeah. Might explain where that damn staff went off to after we used it to blow up Nabriales.
While it does look similar, I'm not yet convinced that's Ark. It would be a damn shame for him to go from "Alexander's dark inversion" to [sub-]boss within Alexander himself. Stranger things have happened, though.
It's probably Ilberd. Masked Man does seem to have the same Cockney-ish accent Ilberd did in the one scene he had spoken dialogue in 3.0. Hardly surprising, though.
Palace of the Dead 51-100 will have story and not be so rough. I think. I remember them saying 101-200 will be the super-grindy part.
Plot twist, Ark isn't the boss! Would actually make him letting us (presumably) ride him to survive some mechanic interesting... Xandes effectively casting Float on us before casting Ancient Quaga and I find that insufferable from a narrative perspective... Obviously fights need mechanics, but... Ugh... Having Ark effectively be, somehow (Mide or something), our counter to Alexander? Fits as a Final Fantasy IX reference, sorta, and doesn't have me bashing my head against the nearest surface going "WHY IS THE BOSS HELPING ME?!"
Would actually make for an interesting fight... I don't think we have any group fights in which NPCs support us... Cait Sith follows us through Weeping City, but s/he only gets involved in a cutscene, would be quite entertaining to have such an ally actually play a role in the fight... Damn, Ravana would have been so interesting like that...
Wild fantasies though, it's probably just another dumb boss... Hopefully it's just Mobile Type 8 and they're saving Ark for something later... Would make for a pretty fitting boss for the Garlean expansion... Always kinda figured it'd be a raid like Alexander...
That's what I've heard... My issue is more that the story is just at the end... It's not woven in with the event itself, Palace of the Dead is just clear a floor, open chests, move onto the next... Having a story at the end of that is fine, I just wish there was more story going on floor to floor... They kinda did what I'm getting at, with the additional NPCs that occasionally show up, just wish there was more stuff like that going on, to make the grind more entertaining... There's plenty they could explore down there, two civilizations worth of ruins (at least), perhaps even some other adventurers found there way down there treasure hunting... Finding a corpse and it leading you to a secret on that floor? That's interesting, the breaks up the stale grind... Fighting a bomb near a wall and it blows a hole into an Amdapori library for us to discover some lore in? I'd love that...
Here's to Deep Dungeons II, I suppose...
What would be really cool is if they added Ark (Presuming that's what it is) as a Mount you could get as a reward for Savage.
About the Xande thing, he's casting Float on 3 people, the fact that we use said float to save the alliance is an unforseen consecuence (why cast it? wanting to see despair on the eyes of those 3 adventurers before ofing them himself? which is exactly what would happen if 3 squishies are left alive after everyone else bites it. Alternatively, he's been driven mad, so he's not thinking all that straight).
Granted, the actual important thing is... how is Ark saving us from Alexander? from how it looks in the trailer we leap into Ark to save us from himself crashing into the arena, essentially hijacking him with little more than our WoL powers (since those arrows seems more mechanics markers than coming from Ark). I'm still most looking forward to Sophia's story, Alexander may be my favorite summon in the series but... there's been very little focus on HIM so far, hopefully with us actually fighting him for A12 that'll change.
Ark was the counterpart to Madeen, not Alexander, since Alexander only appeared in a cutscene.
Thing is though, in the only other game Ark has been a summon in (besides the Dissidias): Final Fantasy Legends: Toki no Suishō, he was Light elemental, not dark. His attack's name being changed to divine fate.
Here's what he looked like in that game:
http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/...20150212065700
When playing it at-level, Xande's Float will one-shot anyone if they get hit by it solo. The leftover energy being usable for floating on to avoid Ancient Quaga is an unforseen consequence, much like how King Behemoth's Comets can be used to take shelter from his Ecliptic Meteor.
... really, sometimes you just have to give them a little leeway with things like that. Fights would be unwinnable if they were entirely logical; Ozma could just keep eating you until you succumb to Doomsday, Garuda could just fly around and pelt you with wind magic, there's no reason Leviathan should play with us like he does instead of just capsizing our boat, etc.
EDIT
The actual name of Zande's float attack is Imperium, just for the record.
So we almost know for sure who the final boss of deep dungeon ( PotD )
Given the apperance, the song, tactics ogre, etc.
My question, is this guy just a super powefull voidsent? Or something else?
Square owns the Ogre franchise now, and if there's any doubt in your mind that Palace of the Dead isn't a reference to it, then listen to this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc8ze7HfmZ4
This is the music used in Palace of the Dead in Tactics Ogre. It is the exact same song used during the 3.4 trailer during the Palace of the Dead segment.
It's going to be Nybeth, the reincarnated versions of Edda and the other various people from our past we encounter in the first 50 floors are strikingly similar to his dabbling with resurrecting the dead in hindsight.
I wonder if he's a surviving Amdapori WHM? We're getting to know more about the Mhachi, yet we don't know too much about the Amdapori WHM and their ability to "alter the very fabric of existence" While I don't think necromancy is that magic, I do think that Amdapor did eventually made use of Voidsent.
The demon wall minion. Then there's the Disembodied Head resonator which animates objects that has voidal properties and this was used by E-Uma-Kotor to better understand/ recreate the Guardians we fight in Amdapor guardians such as Balipu, etc.
I know what they changed him to in another game, but in IX (his only main series appearance) Ark is the dark foil to Alexander.
Both are transforming mechas; Alexander from a castle, Ark from an airship.
Alexander is the most powerful Gaian eidolon. Ark is the only known Terran eidolon.
Alexander deals light damage (presumably). Ark deals dark damage.
Alexander's attack as per series tradition is "Holy Judgment." Ark's attack is "Eternal Darkness," or for a literal translation from the Japanese version, "Dark Fate."
Alexander is earthbound. Ark is skybound.
... etc.
I'm pretty sure Ark is the current raid's Pheonix; a bonus extra primal surprise before the final big bad.
I wonder if the goal of the WoD is more of a singularity scenario. If they lost their world in a calamity, smashing all existence together, while it would thoroughly stop the cycle of life and death, it's possible they think it would bring them back with the people who died.
I wonder if Yda will make the mistake of siding with the Ala Mhigan Resistance. We know Ilberd isn't a particularly pleasant or sane person and will no doubt engage in yet more horrific acts in the name of his misguided cause. It also seems like he's...interested in reclaiming Ala Mhigo so that he can be in a position of power.
I'm assuming that it is indeed Ilberd. It seems likely - there's many signs that point to it and he's a great way for the story to move towards having the Warrior of Light see Garlemald in a more sympathetic light if he starts killing Garleans indiscriminately.
Ilberd seems a bit too confident in his speech. I do wonder what "power" he's talking about? I'd like to think it's Omega weapon. It might have been damage when it crashed into Carteneau, but sure such a machine that defeated Bahamut would have self-repairing mechanism? The entirety of Coil was recreating a Dalamud and Bahamut's body, so surely there's machines repairing it?
As for Yda and Papalymo, they sure have alot of explaining as to why they have not bothered to contact the WoL and co. They could go the simple route and just say they didn't get info or the whole ordeal wit the mask was worth more than reuniting with the WoL
It might also be an interesting opportunity to see if Illberd will go to the same extremes as Throdian. Summoning a Primal to "liberate" Ala Mhigo by tempering the Garleans, and possibly making a move for Ul'dah to specifically temper the Sultana and Lolorito (getting revenge on Raubahn by taking away his current raison d'etre as well as bring two of the city states under his rule), With seemingly opposing motives from Thordian. Acting in blatant selfishness as opposed to Thordian's feigning of good intentions. Of course it also help if when the whole "Spoken races can summon primals too" inevitably gets revealed that some of the garleans (even as high up as legati and Varis's aides) don't just up and Godwin their entire role in the story like I fear they would given preceding depictions, possibly with a character similar to Ameryc in role as well, one who wants to reform Garlemald from the inside
come to think of it, that might just make 4-5.0 a spread out rehash of 3.0 wouldn't it?
Plot twist: Mide's boyfriend/lover/whatever was turned into Ark and became part of the defenses. After we beat him up he'll regain his senses and help us get to the final area. If he survives he gets to be with Mide again.
While similar to Phoenix in Coil, Ark won't actually be a Primal here.
Also jokes about Mide riding him.
