Its not that hard to make sense of. You just check what number the square you are on is and then move up, down, left or right and depending on what number changes you will know. I dont remember on the top of my head.

The numbers of letters are limited
I say use X,Y or Signs (like an Arrow Up Sign, a Car Sign, a Clock Sign) and Numbers
Signs aren't limited like letters
It can be 15,45 or 24,Tree
It's not a language problem. It's an ambiguity problem which even Japanese players are having trouble with. Refer to the thread that announced the X:_Y:_ addition from the Japanese forums.
But like I already said in my post you've quoted, and then left out. I personally don't really care since it's works 99% of the time now (post <pos> patch), and it isn't really broken.
However, what irks me is that people don't understand that this is an ambiguity issue. Not language issue, nor an education issue, nor is it an intuitive issue.
If you want to throw out snide remarks that's fine, because the ambiguity is somewhat amusing and ridiculous. However, at least be correct in your initial statements before you poke fun of the issue.
Butbutbut, I like making assumptions about other people on the Internet and how they are in real life based off of how they post. :(
But yeah, I'm pretty damn sure EVERYONE knows how the x, y coordinates work, but the ambiguity at the moment is the big issue. SE realized this, and they're fixing it. This isn't as braindead obvious as what captainpicard wants, but IMO it's good enough.
I have never had an issue reading the map, or knowing where to go.
X will always be the first number, which is the line running left to right.
Y will always be the second number, which is the line running top to bottom.
If someone tells you to go to (30,28) then it's 30 across and 28 down...
I don't see the issue with the grid system or mapping being done this way, it's the basis of the X,Y axis and it has never changed that I know of in all of my years.
Both then again I work in game design and I use the XYZ axis a lot, so its just natural for me to think in those terms.
To me this map system is easy, never really thought much about it. :)
Sorry that you're having issues with it OP, but it's an easy thing to learn and I don't agree with you that it does need changing.
I always thought that X,Y coordinate system were pretty much standard anywhere and I always scratched my head when it was done any other way.
The continued assumption that I don't know what the coordinates mean is tired. I clarified from the outset I know what they mean.
As another person earlier in this thread stated, its a matter of ambiguity for the 1% that don't know. Its a matter of clarity for the people that screw up and switch numbers in their head from time to time. Its a matter of ease for those of us that are too tired to think straight at times.
Letter-Number leaves no question about it.
number-number always leaves a margin of error.
That is the bottom line.
You can continue to "think" there is nothing ambiguous or unclear about it and thats fine for you, but it doesn't change the facts, i.e. there are issues.
