I was being sarcastic lmao. Being against the TOS does not make something illegal. SE is not the government lmao
I was just pointing out the stupidity of your analogy

When you pay for a service you shouldn't have to view advertisements... If they want to make money maybe they should go crack some FTP games and advertise stuff there... People that defend these people saying that they do it for the money and need a place to sleep... What a crock, the people doing it aren't there to make a dollar they are there to make millions of dollars...
I wonder how they survived 10-15 years ago, before MMOs were commonplace.
Not nearly the same thing. You pay for cable, aka the service of bringing TV channels to your TV, not for the channels themselves. If you do pay specifically for certain TV channels, they usually do not show advertisements. Sort of like how you pay for internet access but still have to deal with advertisements on free news sites, but don't need to deal with advertisements on web pages or services you pay to use. FFXIV is one of those you pay for.
You know that the $20 someone pays for their gil doesn't return to the farmers but their bosses who run the operation. The average farmer/accountjacker/spammer(which are likely bots running off a script)/whatever make next to nothing.
While some of the gil comes from farming as well, most comes from getting keyloggers into the end user's account and then having the compromised accounts getting stripped. Why take the effort of leveling up and finding spots to farm when you can let your potential customers do it for you, then rob it back from them.
I see some crazy transactions in the auction house that look like gil delivery. It will be one item that is normally selling at an established price and all the sudden you see it going for an insanely high amount from the same retainer repeatedly. Also STF is posting regular reports on the amount of accounts banned/gil removed, at the lodestone. Most recent report was this week.
lol your alleyway comment made me think of Uldah, the alley connected to the adventurer's guild with the wine bottles on the ground and refugees begging for gil.
No, when you pay for something you at least should be reasonably assured you shouldn't be bombarded with adds that don't help to fund the content you are using.
TV for instance, even cable as a person below says, the adds pay to run the service. However these spammers use a lot of hacked accounts, and those fresh accounts don't do much to really keep the service running. Even more so because a lot of the gold comes from hacked accounts. How many people get hacked and then quit the game at that point? If anything these adds hurt SE.
