It happened on Siren as well.
I don't know what it is but I seem to run into a lot of mentors who do halfassed jobs. I think if I see the crown next to their name I may expect a better performance from them... It might cause me to nit pick with what they do more, I don't know, but I constantly see healers with the mentor crown standing around not doing anything outside of an occasional Cure II, or a tank only using single target rotations on large pulls. I'm probably just imagining it, and I shouldn't automatically associate mentor with amazing player, but it kind of discourages me to see the "mentors" do a poor job at their job.
I am more moderate in this. As you know to become a mentor you need at least one of each class to 60 and you get one crown as mentor, it doesnt mean that their main class is healing (in your example), it may well be tanking the one that they know upside down, so judging them by their crown is kind of well not really fair on them, maybe there should be a way to remove that crown when they dont want to mentor specifically when they are not in what they are comfortable in mentoring. Just me though
Yeah, I understand all that, it's just discouraging you know? The people who are supposed to be mentoring other people dragging their feet. But like I said, I'm probably just being nitpicky and thinking their mistakes are worse than they actually are. I'm not saying all mentors are bad, just a large number I have run into are subpar at best. Maybe I expect to much from them, which is completely possible.
More good fortune today, had great first runs completing both Castrum Meridianum and The Praetorium. Mix of vets and new players in the first, seemed nearly all vets in second. Kept up even though they were speed farming runs, helped at least some, got a few comms. I'm sure at some point I will have terrible runs in those instances but having them go well for completion was really nice.
Man who cares really. I'm English and could not give a damn what someone thinks of the English player base
People getting so petty over this crap XD
Opinions are...opinions no amount of words are going to change someone's personal opinions on situations so just leave it be.
On the current subject- I've ran into all types of languages that dont play nice with others. In reality its not the language that makes that person act that way its their own stupidity. Its not E player.. J player.. F player ect... its a player in general some people just happen to run into the bad apples of the internet more than others...but EXPECTING a certain language to be bad before that person has given you a reason is stupidity in itself.
I'm sorry you have ran into the bad apples but before you generalize a whole group... sit back and think about if you were the one being generalized. You can probably see why alot of the people here are upset at what you said.
Now onto my dungeon-
I think it was yday morning get into trial roulette and Seph pops up.. ok no big deal its usually a fun fight and i dont normally screw up. We start everything going ok we get to the part where you need to get behind him to avoid dmg... "oops my bad" i was sitting on the side not the back. Ok ph2 we get to the part where he blows u back.. only.. i thought it was the pew pew part(idk why...i wanna say i was half asleep but honestly idk) and i stand back just enough where i fall.. to my death >.> yes the first time i have ever fallen on that fight and the fights just started..i felt so bad i rushed outta there with my tail between my legs.
log off and take a nap.. no more dungeons for me.
I don't think it's really nitpicking to say that an AST doing (and not doing) the things I described in my post, is terrible. And that a mentor AST doing such things is even worse for it. Personally, I'm just the opposite now: Mentor = player who's going to screw up everything. To be fair, I've met mentors who never screwed up badly enough for me to notice anything, but yeah, the crown does make it even more noticeable when a player bearing it is terrible at what they're supposed to do.
It has been said countless times before and needs to be said again: The current standards for mentor status are entirely too low. I absolutely refuse to take on mentor status myself until SE comes up with a more stringent test for it.
The problem with this is that they can't use any entirely automated method to qualify people for Mentor status, and have it keep out bad mentors. With that in mind, here's how I think the "bad mentor" situation should be handled:
- Make sure that Mentors can be stripped of their Mentorship, without having to ban them from the game outright. This would allow SQEX to permanently remove mentor privileges from people who abuse the status, without necessarily having to ban people who wouldn't otherwise need to be banned.
- If players report a Mentor, GMs should then consider whether the Mentor needs to be stripped of Mentorship, in addition to any other punishment that may happen because of the report.
The only way a higher "bar" for Mentorship would work is if SQEX used a formal application process to select Mentors, which I doubt they want to do. The above at least shows how to weed out the bad mentors that do get into the system.
--Erim Nelhah
My own take on the idea is a series of specialised trials that must be passed to receive mentor status. Trials that will test your ability to adapt to different situations, and your ability to utilise your job's basic skills. And mentor status for combat jobs should probably be more segregated, with people receiving designated "Tank/Healer/DPS Mentor" status, rather than having mentor status for every role at once.
Had a pleasant little group in Expert Roulette the other day. WHM (myself) DRK BLM DRG. (Japanese server, I'm the only English speaker, but I can read and speak Japanese well enough.)
I had just gotten home from work and was a little tired after a long day. Everything goes fine with the group, but the first boss was a bit of a durrrh for me. I spaced out when the frog magic hammers or whatever it is on the tank to give them concussion. Forgot to esuna, but healed the tank up, boss dies we move on. DRK says to me in Japanese that it can be esuna'd. I told him yeah I know I kinda spaced out. Long day at work. He laughed, said It's actually a good thing. Gave him a chance to recover his MP. We all had a good chuckle over it and that was pretty much that.
Time for a rant!
For the first time in my (almost) two years playing this game, I ran into a player that has left me literally shaking. Got my closest friend into playing the game and after getting bard to 50, she's decided to try levelling a healer for a change of pace. As someone who has all healers at 60 and plays all of them, I tanked the first few dungeons with her tonight to pass on some tips.
We got to Halatali, me as DRK, her was CNJ, and a MNK and NIN as dps. Everything goes well (really well, actually) until the first pull after the second boss. I grab the two mobs and one of the DPS pulls the first chain. No big deal, probably was hoping for a chest or bomb, but three Lightening Sprites spawn, and my friend has to panic heal (we'd been taking it easy up to this point so she could get the basics down). We lived and moved on, nothing was said, so I grab the second set of mobs (which is the same as the first set with an added snake this time), and the DPS feels the need to pull the chain again, spawning another three Lightening Sprites. We die and I ask the DPS to not pull the chain because the healer is new, but the dps said the best way to learn is through 'harsh lessons'...
We go back and forth a bit, me saying that I want to take it easy for my friends sake, and the DPS mocking my tanking skills (my tanking was fine, by the way, all my tanks are at least level 50, so I can definitely tank Halatali). I started a vote kick on the NIN based on some rude comments (she was a Mentor, by the way), which passed, and the monk told my friend and I to kill ourselves...
This is the reason I was shaking, what was the need to say something so extreme? It left us both completely disheartened. Look, if you want to tank then switch to a tank, don't force a healer that's been healing for 5 minutes to heal beyond their comfort level and then blame me and said healer for the wipe.
Think we'll be sticking to running things with out FC for a while.
@TheCarnivalBoy
I don't think healing skill has anything to do with that anymore. Incoming damage was simply bigger than the incoming heals. This is not normal, which is why we let the tank set the pace.
...I may say that, but I just got out of a Tam-Tara Deepcroft where the healer told me to "Pull everything". So I did. We had two melee, MNK DRG, so not much for AoE. Barely put a dent in his MP. I dont play a healer, so I have no clue how he does it, but that's monstrous.
Edit: He was SCH.
I'm sorry you and your friend had to experience something so awful, honestly those type players should be banned without a second thought because that kind of behaviour should never be tolerated and I hope you reported them.
Those kinds of people should not be playing mmo's or any online game for that matter but unfortunately this is the internet and they are keyboard warrior's and will say whatever they want because they see no repercussions to their actions and will simply not care at the potential harm that their words might have, its been proven many times over that words can cut deeper than any knife.
However, horrible as they are, they are merely an avatar on the screen spouting a whiny tantrum and you have to do your best to not let it get you down or you'll ultimately wind up a nervous wreck and unable to have faith or trust in other players, there are many good apples out there and I hope you find them more frequently its just the spoiled and rotten ones like to stand out but you just need to bin them and forget about them.
I recently got my PLD (and first tank!) to 60, and decided to give EX roulette a whirl. My gear isn't fantastic - just the Dravanian set with some eso gear, but I figure I'd give it a shot and see how it goes. You never improve without practice, after all!
I got thrown in with a WHM, BRD and a NIN. A quick gear check tells me they're in more or less fully-melded Eikon gear. Hmm. Oh well, it's not like they're a BLM or SMN, and provided I focus on the right adds, it should be fine, right? Oh, the naivety.
Not only were both of them the "unleash absolute hell before the tank's even finished pulling" sort, they were also the "throw up every cooldown they have and each attack a different target" kind of DPS. Add that on top of "act snotty towards the tank 30 ilvls below them for letting an add get away for ten seconds", and it made for a wonderfully pleasant run. I couldn't pull smaller either, as the WHM would impatiently run on ahead in that "pull bigger!" way so I ended up trying to hold aggro on huge mobs while the NIN and BRD nailed their own targets in between throwing up buffed AoEs. My MP bar was a sad sight.
My only payback was at the end, when in a obvious show of disdain, neither DPS bothered to free me when I got dollhouse'd. I ended up getting released automatically, but not before the NIN took aggro, got completely whaled on with Knockout and KO'd right before the end of the fight. I don't think I've laughed that hard in a while.
That was more than just mean or childish, and it should be absolutely reported ASAP. I don't care if the person was a snotty 12 year old or bitter 60 year old or somewhere in between, such behavior violates the ToS and the spirit of the game's community.
There are many times in life people have to endure abusively harsh words and callous rudeness, but this is a game many people actually play for fun, and those who forget that or who think cruelty is fun should be be firmly reminded that there limits to what they can get away with when playing with others in a game other people also pay for.
*sigh* that guy apparently doesn't realize that in low level dungeons, all healers have is basic cure spells. It's not like at high levels where you have a ton of instant heals and buffs and other cooldowns to fall back on. What you have is Cure spam and if that isn't enough you're pretty much shit out of luck. Basically, he sounds like a complete idiot to me. Or a troll. Hard to decide which.
Sounds like he was queued with the NIN and got mad that they got kicked.Quote:

Yeah, I would've been pissed too. You were perfectly justified in kicking the NIN.Quote:

Luckily players like that are a minority. The behavior should be reported, though.Quote:

Lmao. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I'll never understand the attitude of some DPS that either think that it's 1) fun or 2) that they're teaching the tank a lesson via "tough love" when they play this way. Quelling Strikes is a thing. Pulling your punches is a thing. Mechanics are a thing. Every ExRo dungeon isn't about your stupid parse; it's about working together to clear the content with the least amount of stress on everyone in there with you. If I get a low geared tank and I pull off of them despite my best efforts, I feel bad and I apologize. If I'm on healer, yeah I'm definitely one of those 'sprint ahead' types but that's mostly because that's how I'm used to having to play to keep up with the group. If the tank doesn't keep going, I double back. If I accidentally pull mobs while running ahead, I apologize. I swear, apologizing and working with people doesn't hurt a bit!
Another funny bit about your story is that since the second Dollhouse actually had a chance to go off, the DPS couldn't have been all that spectacular to begin with. Really DPS-heavy parties will burn the boss down before the mechanic ever happens. Not to mention the fact that he was a ninja, so that never should've happened if he was actually using his skills correctly. Hah. xD
Pretty much Fairies can solo heal most things early doors, for a sch its like throw up dots and see if how it's going
Remind me to just stop being a bitter grandmother next time, but seriously, if you're a dragoon and pop Blood of the Dragon only to immediately use Geirskogul and lose it, as well as never doing the Chaos Thrust combo I will find you. I will find you, and I will outdps you as AST in Cleric.
Because that's what happened in Arbo. The DRG main inside me needs a drink asap...
It was obvious they thought they could be clever and finish the boss off before the next attack, but their DPS just wasn't enough and it ended up failing spectacularly. The NIN didn't touch Smokebomb or Shadewalker for the entire run, mainly because he was trying to take aggro to make a point. Well, he certainly made it, lol. BRD never threw up QS either.
To be honest, I don't expect DPS to pull back to make up for me - I'm fine if they want to go all out and get it done quicker. What mystifies me is when they're actually surprised and turn nasty if they take aggro for a few seconds. I mean, really? What do you expect?
Funnily enough, it often happens on my NIN when I do lower level dungeons (I admit sometimes I like to try and take aggro on a monster if I'm bored.) But I never blame the tank for it as long as they're doing their job properly, it's just level/ gear discrepancy.
Other ninjas give me a headache a lot of the time. I remember when I first started Ninjaing a tank said something along the lines of, "A well behaved Ninja, I'll be damned." I just threw it off as him being coy, but as the stories above and my own experiences have shown, a lot of rude people play Ninja. Hell, when I started tanking it only took a couple of runs with them to figure out what he meant. There was even a point I dreaded having a Ninja in the party when I was tanking. I was dreading tanking for my main class, that's not a good feeling. So I would like to say, not all Ninjas are jerks who think the run revolves around them. I do admit, I like to try and steal aggro too, but only when the tank is really good and I see it as a personal challenge. I never do it to disrupt a run or prove a point.
Now that that rant is over, I had a fun Ravana run yesterday. We said our hellos and one of the healers said it was his first time healing it. One of the tanks responded with it not being a hard run. Doing a cursory glance I see a lot of people are in high end stuff and probably farmed RavEX; but even so, just saying that is a death flag. And sure enough, after Swift Slaughter I was the only one left standing. He was still at about 35% health and I decided to go for it. It was going pretty well, but then he put two of the purple AoEs on me and it did more damage then I had HP.
When I tanked Haukke Manor (which is a level 28 instance), I had a healer that was DPSing when I had to pop every cd I had to survive and even then there was no guarantee that would work either, but eventually the healer actually started casting cure and we did it easily.
Did leveling as ast this morning and got halatali with an arcanist, pld and drg. A single cure would pull hate off the tank, things were dying abnormally slow, even if it was someone's first time (no new person message). I then noticed the arcanist wasn't using a pet, the drg was only spamming impulse drive and ONLY impulse drive and the pld never used a single cooldown so his hp dropped like a rock and only did riot blade combo and just spammed flash 7-8 times for hate, even when he lost it on a single mob D:
Worst part? They all had multiple 50+s...
Did a leveling roulette yesterday as WHM. I was expecting Stone Vergil. I forgot that I'm level 44 so I should be expecting DD. It turns out I got DD, and I was seriously undergear....I was using Cutter's Cry gear and could take on Stone Vergil without problem. My failure as a WHM in training..
Haven't posted here before, but just had a run that was kinda comical and ironic.. :)
Running Lost City HM, I've only run it a couple of times sofar, but haven't had any problems with the mechanics personally (I'm sure on a bad day when I'm zoning out, that will change :B). So I get dropped in with a tank who pulls everything, which is fine, I like it better that way, faster run & more challenging (less chance of falling asleep).. except, this tank doesn't actually keep aggro on everything, even though I'm making sure to only start healing him when he's at least flashed the group a couple of times, which leads me to play catch up heal time, (but I don't mind usually, as long as I'm not dragging aggro and making the tanks life more difficult.) Not only is everyone taking massive damage, the tank is aswell, even though he's pretty much sharing the aggro with every other party member? Ok, not a big deal, I heal through it, we kill them and we move on.
We get to the first boss, the tank is aiming his shadows AoE onto the rest of the group.. multiples times, causing everyone to have to move out of his laziness, but ok.. second boss goes pretty smoothly, except the DPS killing adds before the spear but meh. Third boss, by this time, I'm kinda noticing that these guys aren't too bothered about mechanics, tank suddenly pipes up halfway through the fight and says "stand in the light" I'm currently healing his squishy ass, so I don't, but what went through my mind is -Oh, you care about mechanics now? at the end of the dungeon?..-
We kill the boss, and I say "thanks all =]" to which the tank replies, "pity you didn't listen to me healer" then he leaves, as quick as his little squishy legs could carry him. I just laughed and thought, ignorance really is bliss =P
Other ASTs who overwrite everything every fight with 50% potency AOE effects. :|
I was healing A8, and the group kept wiping. Tanks weren't mitigating damage and dps were ignoring mechanic. I decided that it was going nowhere, as we had already tried and failed 5 times prior, so i initiated a vote abandon to save us all some time.
Apparently i had stumbled into a progression group...
..Yes, a progression group in the duty finder.
Everyone was in a FC together except for me, and they were pretty enraged that i suggested that we give up. I decided to leave rather than accept the verbal abuse.
On a separate run, I had an AST who would change into whatever stance i was in before the fight started because "we're stronger when we're the same". I had to explain why that doesn't work.
Loved reading everyone's stories :) although very worried now that i'm being a rubbish Bard :( but i'm working on it! At least reading here to learn will hopefully stop me getting shouted at too much...
(wow the text limit is a bit extreme )
Just a quick couple that have stuck with me:
Me and my bf were trying to do Garuda HM recently, i'd quickly watched a video and realised I needed to kill that satin feather asap but had missed that the spiny one was to be left alone. Realised after the 1st one went down not to do it again but apparently it wasn't only me that didn't realise >.< after 1st wipe the tanks were both like "what happened? did anyone see?" then realised the spiny feather kept getting destroyed and said politely to all DPS to please not attack it.
So we start again, everyone avoiding the spiny feathers, but they still got destroyed. I still don't know what was happening (poor tank in the chat trying to remind everyone "please leave spiny feather up!"), the only thing I can think is that someone was using AoE and hitting it accidentally?? Either way, after 3 wipes and whoever was destroying not listening we all had to abandon :( still haven't defeated Garuda HM... put me right off!
2nd is just a confusing one. Can't remember the dungeon name but it was to get the last Aether current in the area with Falcon's Nest in Ishgard, said hi, ran the whole thing, thought we were fine, I had just got WM and was trying it out (so yeah... maybe it was my fault :/) but after last boss tank just goes "you guys seriously need to work on your DPS" and left. Like dude. Any pointers would have been appreciated :( After reading a load of the comments here I guess people are apprehensive when giving people advice since so many don't appreciate it, but I do! I even said at the start of the run "Hey, 1st time running this one so please let me know if I mess up!". FFXIV is my first MMO so I know I have a lot to learn.
So recently i've left my Bard to story quests and i'm doing dungeons as my WHM for a big of an ego boost. I'm only lvl 32 and the last 6 odd dungeons i've run i've had all 3 commendations so must be doing something right! :)
You can circumvent the character limit by editing your post ^^; it only applies when you post a new post, not when you edit. It's... silly and ridiculous, and clearly based on JP posts, where you can say a lot more with a lot fewer characters, but unfortunately I don't see it changing any time soon =/
As for your Bard... once you get to 60 (and presumably the end of at least 3.0 MSQ), you'll get to unlock the ingame parsing workaround (Stone, Sky, Sea) so you can practice and experiment without risking verbal abuse.
And don't give up hope on the HM primals =) It can be a bit tricky these days, with most people in DF assuming "light farming" tactics (especially on Garuda) and completely ignoring mechanics -- which kind of ruins the fun of it for those who are new, and is more or less impossible if too many people are new and/or not completely overgeared.
Ah! Thank you :) I did think my posts weren't as long as others i'd seen but just decided to split them haha >.<
I have noticed when I was running the crystal tower that the videos I watched were completely outdated and people would ignore like adds etc because most of the party are over levelled so you can do that now, which was confusing at first!
The bf has run ahead and is on the primal extremes now so i'll go back to them on my own eventually, definitely as DPS first to learn them though :P Gotta work on my BRD, I understand Mages Ballad and use that when I notice it's needed but the others just confuse me, for example i've been told not to use Foe's Requiem a couple of times (used with BLM DPS in party??).
Just about to visit Zenith and do the Nidhogg dungeon on the msq so looking forward to that :) now i've got a couple of friends with me to run dungeons I can safely test out the songs too - was on my own for a long time :(
1. In expert, had a tank who was, apparently, playing from the office. Had to randomly afk in the latter half of the dungeon and was basically pulling and standing still for upwards of a minute or so. And of course, he got the minion that dropped at the end of the dungeon @#$%
2. In 60 roulette, got partied up with 2 mentors (PLD and BLM) and a non-mentor (AST). Got ARF for roulette, tank decides to single pull each mob in the first wing. After the first hallway, the healer leaves (understandably so, we had a BLM for crying out loud) and I just comment with "I guess our healer didn't like the single pulls lol".
Black Mage responds with "Too bad for him then" and I follow the healer out of the duty. We didn't even have bonus. @#$%
