There using a developers build of the game, so we cant go off what there showing us here...at least to justify that statement.

I could finally watch the video!! Most of it don't look "cartoonish".. only 1 or 2 shots.
I saw the trailer finally. I don't even get why people are complaining I thought it looked decent enough.
I don't think it is cartoonish it's just the lighting. All the characters look dull and washed out like the lighting is blowing out detail in the faces so there is little shadow or detail. The current version can get like this as well in certain lighting conditions during the day.
I like the way it looks but that's just me. No issues here in my book.
I didn't see anything, I saw some picture someone posted of a video that looked fake. Until I see the video footage and what they say about it I won't believe it.
I see the link now I will watch it. Though on the video so far I see no mention of PS3 unless it says it at the end.
Different people just prioritize and care about different things. That is the way of the world.
Some people think the perfect car is one that gets great gas mileage because that's what's important to them; while other people will drive big gas guzzlers because they want power and speed.
Some people prefer fast, responsive gameplay first and foremost; while others appreciate subtle improvements in graphics quality and animation.
There is no right or wrong.
Part of the reason this forum exists is to allow players to give feedback on what is important to them. Obviously some people care about the graphics quality and are expressing their concern on what they see as a serious downgrade to the game they play.
Ultimately it is SE's decision to make, regardless of all the hate, name calling, and mean spirited comments that get posted here.
I prioritize graphics and immersion, so I am expressing my opinion here in the hopes that SE takes it as one small vote from a dedicated player who likes the level of detail that was built into 1.0.
If ARR turns out to be a big enough disappointment in the graphics department, I'll just have to decide whether or not this is still a world I want to be part of.
It does not say anywhere that it is PS3 footage and it might be lowest resolution footage. Might be showing what it will look like if you are playing on a complete crap system, or it could be the PS3 and if that is the case he actually held up to what he said. Up close it does look kind of rough but several times in the video where it zoomed out abit while fighting and riding the Chocobos it looked amazing. Also it is the type of graphics engine that will grow on your the more you play it, unless you already have top of the line hardware then you don't have to worry about all that. It's going to look better than 1.0 at high res.
It seems like most people would rather keep their big, boring, copypasta world instead of enjoying this new one.
Also if graphics aren't important why aren't people playing Eden Eternal? FFXIV is going to be like that game with better graphics.
So.... this is a screenshot with the left side image taken from the trailer released todayish "FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn - A New Adventure" and the right side image is taken from the trailer released a few weeks ago FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn - Limit Break Trailer both of are from the PC version of the game as it is the exact same footage. The confirmed a while back the new graphics engine would use far less textures and even in previous screenshots (like the paladin below, just look at the spirits within) held that cel-shaded look

I edited the post several times, sorry about that. I believe it is the exact same version of the game, not a weak pc or a ps3 version. It looks like they simply kicked up the lighting and increased the gamma.
Also, that grass is pretty bad lol
I think people questioning more on this image

less polygon/textures ?
I'm really trying to hold off getting worked up about the graphics and everything.
Some areas are really nice, others are a little cringe worthy.
I want to get into beta or alpha and see what it's like with everything turned up.
But a benchmark would be a godsend atm, max'd out graphics, med and low settings, and let us see it on our own PC, it'll also give them great real world feedback on the current level they are at if it send scores and specs and we post up..
Dammit Aion I'm trying to unsee that image atm !
lol Bad is an understatement, I will hopefully be selecting off for grass in the options unless it gets some serious love.
My point was everyone is just now making a big deal out of it and it has been the same graphics in each of the videos, that was what i was trying to prove. The old videos are just much darker and typically zoomed out. It was a strategic play on SE's part t not show off "too much"
Well, I'm sure within the Coming days ( Tomorrow even), We should be getting more Screenshots, like all the other major events we got SS tied into whatever else they showed :P.
Ok, talked it over with my friends, the problem with these graphics are, they are less grainy the faces is SMOOTH as can be, no pores or whatever. also the colors are, more vibrant? which isn't a bad thing, though, the world isn't as vibrant in colors... soo that creats a blah mesh of different styles.
The new trailer kinda crosses the border into cell shading. In some of the screens.
Why would they? Easy answer is so players who don't have a so great system will know what to expect when they get the game, we kept hearing about low end PCs going to be able to play 2.0 and some would wonder what that would look like. Though Indie has a good point with that being the same trailer etc.
I'd still go with Gramul's why?
Because... if they are showing what low end systems can do - they are showing that not only does it not look as good but it also lags.
I just want to clarify because I know some may see it as an attack on SE. This isnt (for me) a hate on SE kind of thing, I want SE to do well - so I dont want them to be showing stuff thats not going to help them out. This would be something that didnt really help them. It also casues worry if thats representive of the game in general.
As someone has stated (Wynn I think) it would be wonderful if they could just show us the best screenshots they can do - the every system on full AA full post processing ambient occlusion, dof, max vision kind of thing.
Perhaps they arent ready for that - but since they are working on a game that is being played currently. Players are far more connected to the development process then usual. They need to keep a very close line of communication to us. Like weekly if not more kind of updates.
We are chomping at the bit - but dont make us weary - we want to share the awesome news and videos and subside concerns that appear in the forums through factual developer information. Cant do that if we dont know shit lol.
What is this awful trend...
Rokien makes a silly topic. Forum community tries to turn the topic into something we can ACTUALLY discuss. This discussion usually goes well until Rokien once again opens his mouth.
Nggghffffff....
I don't know why everybody is so hung up on these minor details when that LN are looks really bland in general. I really hope they've done more than add one 3d model to it because based on what they've shown us it looks just as boring as the current version.
Meanwhile Gridania looks stunning. The dip in quality between these 2 areas is shocking even when comparing 2 stills.
I dont think too many people care but since terrain is my hobby its something I look at closely.
And total aesthetics are important, having a cohesive environment while it doesn't seem like much will mean a lot in the end.
The little things add up.
Also totally agree about the grid area, in love with it. Uldah area looks a bit conflicting its a oasis but not quite its not sure what it is.
LN I think needs more flora - and some more Z activity*. A problem i've noticed in both FF MMO's is they dont really build much in the Z axis, everything is rather planer. Grid could be the easiest to prove they are brave enough to build very Z wise (as they have a little), but it still appears they have two very flat expanses.
*I feel that they would almost benefit most from using a more Iceland (environment) influence color scheme for La Noseca (which right now is like a slightly retextured grid).
Why would you want more flora in it LN is considered a plains/plateau. Very rarely do you see more than just grass in a plains area.
