This whole thread......
Interesting thoughts and points of view from all sides here. It also seems a lot of discussion on the 'morality' of the clothes. Perhaps it is important to keep a few things in mind:
Demeaning or not, is more psychological than physical (especially nowadays). If a girl puts on a 'skimpy' outfit for the purpose of trying to attract attention (i.e. the : Look at me! Look at me! I need attention!), then that is demeaning. If she puts it on because she likes it (and does not care what other people think) then that is not demeaning.
If a man forces her to put on the outfit, then that does become a demeaning act (but this is not possible here, so I'll not talk about that).
The reality is, it is up to women to decide if they want to put on that outfit, and for what reason. They have the right to choose. Therefore, the worst case scenario is that they would demean themselves. It is no longer, as the OP suggested, a situation where someone else is demeaning and objectifying women. Since they can not force the women to wear it.
Now if we want to take a step back and actually see it for what it's worth....
Did you know the olympics were originally held naked? No clothes at all?
Did you know that gladiators and spartans would go into battle wearing little to no clothes, ready to face death?
Did you know that mage's don't really need physical armour in order to call upon the majicks?
Do you know that girls in the mage outfit look more like belly-dancers than anything inappropriate?
Do you know that 'lewd'ness is a relative term applied to a situation based on ones own personal moral position. What one person/culture would say is lewd another would say is acceptable.
Please do not impose your moral and ethical beliefs onto others. Allow us to make our own choices.
The clothing items fit the era and theme of FFXIV.
Wearing it or not, is now a personal choice.
Thank you.
Shut up cat babes are hot your just jealous
Just to play Devil's Advocate. We have laws against murder and theft, for example.
You might say, "Well, as long as you're not hurting anyone, then people shouldn't have morals imposed on them." But that in itself is a moral and ethical judgement. Your argument here is philosophically bankrupt and contradictory, because you are deciding for them it is unacceptable for them to impose their morals on people, itself a moral judgement.
Now, if we want to discuss the *degree* to which it's acceptable to impose moral and ethical beliefs on people, that's another matter entirely.
Mostly unrelated to the topic at hand, simply putting things on a more solid philosophical footing as it continues.
Well, to be fair to the fans of the game that asked for "more sexy gear" and to Yoshi P. and his team, the items are only from faction leves, and to be honest, they're not even that great to take into serious battles. So don't expect everyone to start wearing them.
And secondly to support last year's summer event, which gave everyone bikinis to wear, which are essential the same thing you see before you, plus some more black garbs thrown on it and what not to differentiate the two apart.
You don't have to get the gear or look at it if you don't want to. It's not going to ruin the game's image.
There's already people running around in their underwear and swimsuits already and the game's doing great as it is, and even greater in the future when FF XIV: A Realm Reborn launches, I'm sure of it!
But in your defense, I can understand it may not appeal to you and you may not like the style or the amount of skin being shown off to appear sexy, but like I said before, they threw it in to please the fans who asked them for it. So they listened to their fans and made them happy, but equally making some others unhappy in the process.
You can't simply please everyone on planet Earth at once, it's just not possible no matter what scenario you have.
But for your benefit I can almost guarantee you that you won't see many players running around with this in mass numbers simply because it is not made for war it is made to wear around and show off to appease the fans that wanted it.
There most likely will be some new types of sexy gear in the future and much, much more covered gear in the future to come. So no sweat unsubscribing for it, but I do understand your issue somewhat and respect your decisions.
I'm kinda surprised this thread has stayed alive this long. We need gear like this cause enough people want gear like this. Its all part of keeping the players happy and stuff. We do tend to give them our money after all so I would think they would try to keep as many of us happy as they can.
Where exactly is this thread supposed to be going?
Quickly, derail it.

The internet is truly a magical place....
Incorrect.
Stereotypes exist because they are an common factor amongst a large sample size. Why the word stereotype carries a negative connotation is beyond me. A stereotype is a scientifically measurable fact, no more, no less. To accuse me of "stereotyping" is tantamount to accusing me of breathing. I'll take point to remind you that, besides #1 and #4, prejudice was neither implied or implicitly stated.
It would behoove you to work on your reading comprehension before senselessly lashing out.
I bet you believe the stereotype that pigeons have faces.

you do know that most jp fan are animated freaks- jp are sex object
Oh, an interesting philosophical debate.
You are correct, and I have considered the fact that:
By allowing the possibility of an action to occur, society and its ethical values itself can be affected. In other words, by allowing one to wear skimpy outfits, society could degrade such that everyone believes that wearing skimpy outfits should be considered normal. At this point the impact of the decision is no longer restricted to the original wearer but now has an effect to everyone else within that society.
This is a side-effect of civilization (in the sense of people living together in communities). Any decision one person makes, even if perceived to have no impact on any one else, can in fact impact everyone else. This then leads to the argument that every action one can make should only be done if the community deems it acceptable as it will eventually have an impact on the community as a whole.
So we have to decide to what extent do we wish to relinquish personal liberty & freedom in order to maintain community values. Or in fact, do we wish to expel community values in favour of differing personal view points. Or is one truly the other being manifsted in singular form but the source of which is an underlying sentiment throughout the community?
Rather than fill in 100 pages on discussion, I'll see if I can jump to the quick one liner:
Life is a constant struggle between our own personal beliefs and those of the community we live in. Sometimes the community will win and we suppress our personal beliefs (go to work dressed conservative rather than an anime character). Sometimes we win and the community will have to accept the choice we make (multiple piercings). Sometimes one influences the other resulting in a changing trend of both what the individual or the community deems 'acceptable' (everything done nowadays would be deemed totally unacceptable 100 years ago. And everything 100 years from now will probably be shock people today).
The only thing we can do is: Understand the reprecussions of the choice we make, and if the choice is worth it.
Perhaps the people of Eorzea will throw stones at women who dress this way, demanding them to wear burkas. Or perhaps they will just laugh and giggle and get over it.
In the mean time, everyone is of course free to voice their opinions (most of us live in a free world). But, to restrict what someone else can do because it imposes on your own ethical or moral belief infringes on other's personal liberty? This can only really be solved by the community (or village elders in the form of SE).
SE has decided they want this. SE is Japanese. It ain't going away ^.^;
(Btw, a stronger case may have been made if the ONLY option for equipment for women was these types of outfit... but it's not... quite the contrary).

Here's my Dr. Frank-N-Furter impersonation.
This reminds me of the dancers in beach volleyball (2012 Olympics) allegedly objectifying women. Yet they wear more than the sportswomen, there are men doing the same thing in the same dance crew on the same sand, and all of them are willing to do it, nay, they are not just willing, this is something they have worked towards for a long time. I would not say it is objectifying women (or men), but allowing people to do what they want to do and to be applauded for it.
Or perhaps you're right. Perhaps women should cover up. They have no place in today's world being able to decide what they wear, do they? That should be something decided by people who are not them.
Just imagine what would happen if men were to declare that females should cover up in public.
Conclusion: Women who don't want other women to wear what they want to wear are jealous of the other woman's body and/or insecure about their own bodies and/or horrified at the ugliness of the other woman's body and/or self rightously pushing their personal principles/beliefs onto other women rather than letting them to be their own woman.
Just let people wear what they like in video games.
at the end of the day, we all like pie
The gear says coliseum on it, that's pretty much equivalent to it being called "Show off" or "Flashy" Subligar/Loincloth etc, it does what the name implies. (Cheek-less jeans are cheek-less)
The stats are mediocre at best and are not considered elite by any standard so there is no reason to wear it other than wanting to wear it. (I find it humorous that since the gear covers little skin it comes with pretty low defense)
Male version is just as trashy. <-- Gender Equality at its finest.
Other available equipment other than Coatee sets are almost identical for both genders in game and therefore women are not forced into wearing Mythril thongs to play the game effectively. (which is tragic...)
All women should make a stand and start posting high def images of themselves posing in coliseum gear!
For freedom!
Men already posted enough. (don't post any more)
Personally, I think that gear looks cheap and stupid, and I really, really hope this isn't going to be the future direction of their gear design. I don't know about you guys, but for me the way the gear looks on my character is quite important, and having to dress like that would be a huge turn off for me. Yes I know no one is forcing us to wear something like that, but I like to wear the best pieces I'm able to get, and if those pieces would be designed to look "sexy" like this coliseum gear, I would be extremely disappointed. Luckily these pieces aren't very good, but I'm a bit worried about the direction we're going to. I don't want this game to be another Tera. :(
This is, again, my personal opinion and I know some people actually find the gear good looking and want to wear something like that.
This.
And this.
Well said. :)
I dont know what all the fuss is about. It has more material than the bikinis and underwear default armor......
Why isn't Reinhart all over this thread?
Those pidgeons are too sexy for FF14. Get them out of here!
And again, I'm not really opposed to sexy gear. I just wish the sexy gear we got would be a bit more creative.
When I saw it... I want it.. not that I would wear it in town.. around many ppl.
still I like it for a "special" duo outfit with a close "friend" lol
and for use in mix and match. though I do agree with others that posted. it shouldnt be great stuff or take the place of real armor. I think it should have been event clothes set with little protection.
I'm 50 weaver and 45 leather atm because i like clothes and mixing them =^,^=
I do hope I get this set..
SE is not making any kind of statement about women here. Its just for laughs and thats how we should all take it.
How can i get that gear ? ^_^ Is it out yet ?
For the dozens of you people saying that it's not a big deal because male characters can equip it also; you're wrong. It is not possible to be sexist against men.
And before you think I'm not serious, I assure you I am. How often do you see men offended by other men in skimpy suits? Never.
Now see how often we women get offended by such things, even in video games? Very often, and for good reason. Just look at "Tropes vs. Women" on Kickstarter. She got funded 158k $ because this is a real world problem that needs to stop.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...s/posts/242547
And like it or not, there are a lot of us who support such things and won't accept the blatant misogynist characteristics in FFXIV and other video games.
