what do you think a demolition timer on a house, is? especially funny considering that yoship said before that they'd never ever introduce such a system in the first place

Remember when they said they got rid of Veteran rewards because they didn’t want players to feel forced to pay a sub….but then the demo timer exists and contradicts that entire sentiment. Even if people bring up the argument of “oh well…you just have to sub every 40 days.” And? That still doesn’t defend the whole thing of Yoshi p telling us to play another game.
I'm impressed how much people cling to this one line and parrot it over and over.
There is a big difference between dropping your sub entirely and leaving for several months, and just keeping it running while you spread your time out over multiple games. No developer wants the first one, that's financial suicide. If the entire playerbase played a patch for 1 month and quit entirely for the other 3, the game would die.
All Yoshida meant is that unlike WoW they don't employ infinite treadmill grinds where you'll fall behind on progression if you don't play constantly. So if you want to do other things in your spare time, you won't sacrifice progress and always be behind. It doesn't mean they don't care about player retention. It's not an excuse to provide less content. It doesn't mean content shouldn't have long term and replay value.
I think the biggest issue with Shinryu was too many people not finishing their level 70 Job quests and trying to fight it without their Ultimate skill and Artifact Gear. It certainly was a rough boss for Story standards, but it also felt very fitting. If some bosses do end up being bottle necks, they might need some tuning, but few tougher fights don't really negate the need of having most of the remaining fights to keep their base difficulty instead of becoming complete walkovers.
Look at the current Crystal Tower raids, there are few mechanics with outdated markers that might pose issues or people but most bosses can't even dish out their abilities before lying in dirt. Some of the early story Trials completely lose the awe effect of not even tickling the players and just dying in record times. Dungeons are easier than ever, you can even pull some of the long ARR hallways all the way to boss and still come out at the top.
Content is fun when its engaging, if its too easy then it loses all its meaning, if it ends up too hard it can brickwall people. Previous Normal was fine as it was, the current watered down experience is sorely dissapointing. Doesn't really help that past all these expansions people still have very few buttons for large part of game. Adding weaker versions of some later skills to lower levels would also make the game more engaging.
I'm not sure I agree with this. Plenty of companies succeed on games that are one-time purchases. SE's essentially selling a new game every 2 years and likely getting even more income than that with subs between, even with people coming in a month here and there. If a single person subs for only four months in an entire expansion cycle, that's two full Once-and-Done games in a two year period. Not quite an insubstantial or game killing amount of money.
I wiped so many times in Vanaspati final boss because the Trust healers won't heal you up if you screw up the yeet mechanic and get blasted by Aetherial Charge. A normal party would have just giving me a shield, a cure, or a rez. Urianger and Alphinaud point at you and go LOL YOU SUCK and you have to start the fight over from the beginning.
The part that annoys me is that, objectively, the game does have a complexity curve. Compare Ifrit (Hard) to Ravana to Titania to Zodiark and you can see it. (Yes, I skipped Stormblood here. As much as I love Susano, he's a pretty simple fight.) More stuff is happening, more mechanics to watch out for, more to manage. But with job balance focused nearly entirely on end game, synced content gets the short end. Gear inflation and power creep has killed a lot of the fun.
The demolition timer is intended to prevent players who no longer even play from squatting on a house indefinitely. Housing is so hard to come by that it makes no sense to allow players who have left the game to keep their property forever. It wasn't specifically introduced to keep you logging in every single day. If you haven't even visited your house in over a month, you clearly don't care all that much about it. If housing is your end game, then how are you ever running out of content?
1. Please show me where I said that he told us to unsub. Let me be more clear because you got the wrong impression. If you're one of those people who played 24/7 the first week that the game came out so that you could be ready right when the raid dropped, then you've created the drought for yourself. Those of us who took our time had weeks worth of MSQ. I still haven't completed all the role quests, either.
2. I'm impressed that you know that Yoshida intended to speak out against grindy progression systems when he was replying to a player who specifically stated that he was having trouble finding the motivation to even play anymore because of the lack of content. He literally replied with this:
There was no mention of progression systems or treadmill grinds in this context. He was literally talking about content when he said this. His advice was simply to take it slower.Quote:
It's alright not to play it everyday. Since it's just a game, you can stop forcing yourself if it's hard on you to keep that up. Rather, it'll just pile up unnecessary stress if you limit yourself into playing just that one game since there are so many other games out there. So, do come back and play it to your heart's content when the major patch kicks in, then stop it to play other games before you got burnt out, and then come back for another major patch. This will actually make me happier, and in the end, I think this is the best solution I can answer for keeping your motivation up for the game.
I'm sorry, are there two threads made by the same person with the same title and same topic and talking points? Am I tripping?
You're not tripping. The OP opened the first thread in the wrong forum, and when he was told it was the wrong forum, he recreated it here. Eventually a mod realized, and instead of merging the two topics, they moved the original thread to the appropriate forum, so now we have two of them.
It may not be a substantial amount or game killing amount of money. But if every player did quit for 3 months and quoted that statement, Yoshi P would have lost his job immediately and that statement would be redacted. You do not mess with corporate profits or anger share holders.
1. If Yoshi P told the players to unsub from the game, he would have been fired. No question about that, see my above statement.
2. Do you really consider that a good answer? When some one says how do I stay motivated to play your game when there is nothing to do, you answer, go do something else and shrug it off.
How do you take content slower when it's designed to be one shot and done?
Dungeons, Alliance, Normal raids, they're all made to be beaten the first day you go in. Then there is no reward that you can't just craft a better version of. Crafting has been designed so that it only takes a few days to level, Master Recipes have been designed so that you can craft them easily the day they're released. Gathering has been made easier. None of the materials are hard to get.
The average player runs Pandemonium once for the story, runs EX a few times for the weapon then ignores it until they can farm it with Echo + buffed drop rate, gears their crafters effortlessly in a week, makes a 580 set and all they have is Savage. Dungeons are worthless.
The rest is just stuff we've done since ARR. Endless FATEs, bland side quests, roulette chores, TT cards. Even the classes have barely changed from ShB, they're just the same thing with a new button and a few traits.
It seems that you're meant to RP walk and limp through fast food content, then somehow go and enjoy things you've done thousands of times every expansion and if you don't like it, you're at fault.
Piggybacking off what Liam said above, I'll outline what my friends and I plan to do come Tuesday.
- Unlok and complete the 24-man
- Test out the new PvP mode
- Unlock and clear Endsinger
Without even factor in the MSQ, which won't take more than two hours, we'll have completed nearly everything 6.1 has to offer in a single day. Are we supposed to only do one piece of content a week just to artificially lengthen the patch?
Now, obviously, PvP and Endsinger are meant to be continuous content but even that has its limits. First and foremost, PvP has... a pretty horrendous track record in this game. And farming Endsinger 50 times won't exactly take long. Even if you only did five runs a day, you'd be done with her in less than two weeks unless you really want her mount early. I'll certainly spam the 24-man a handful of times but running the same thing over and over only has so much staying power.
Hence why the whole "stop rushing!!" argument has never held water. Even at a slow pace, the patch cycles simply don't have nearly enough content to last even a month. They're entirely dependent on you loving the content so much you'll spam it hundreds of times "just for fun". Which, hey, more power to people who want to do that. It doesn't change the fact there isn't much content to begin with.
To the people talking about finishing content quickly and "having nothing else to do" is your perspective that the game is to be completed? I'm really confused how people think there isn't enough content in the game, even repeat stuff. I have nearly every bit of loot in the gold saucer and I still go back there just cause it's fun and that's what my friends and I like to do. Last night I spent 2 hours parkouring through a housing district. What exactly do you want the game to give you?
More long lasting content spread out would be nice. Not content you do once a week for 30 mins for a piece of gear. It’s not really about perspective, it’s just about objective, but fun itself is subjective. You might find parkouring in a housing district fun, i find it a bore. I enjoy engagement.
Everything pre-EW is an embarrassing mess with how easy it is. Most fights you don't even see all the mechanics anymore, or hear the full musical theme like you used to. And even EW instances aren't difficult and are probably the easiest trials we've ever had (while they were current). Not counting savage, naturally.
Gold Saucer is not battle content. Gold Saucer is not what drew me to this game, nor does it hold much staying power over me. Parkour? I can do that in nearly any open world game. At least there's no restoration to push onto us this time around. Frontloading with nothing but fluff and crafting is what made the Shadowbringers content drought as unbearable as it was.
Give us battle content like relics and Bozja/Deep Dungeon earlier.
The parkour in housing is engagement for some. Just as fun is subjective, so is engagement.
This is why people should embrace playing multiple games. When you get bored with one, there's another waiting for you. Anything can get boring when you do it repetitively without a break.
I think that's a result of how SE syncs item level in dungeons. They really should scale it back so it's closer to what players would have when the content was originally released (though not all the way to min ilvl).
I have seen the "just play other games" "argument" spring up all the time now... and it only got pushed hard more recently (yeah, the 'just unsub' has been around ever since Yoshi made that remark ages back but not quite at this level). But I've never actually seen anyone outright state that FFXIV is their only game. Just strange and frankly, dismissive and bizarre. Are we only supposed to play the game 30 minutes a month? Is the "correct" way to play something along the lines of bouncing around the Limsa plaza flirting with 2B maid miqote or the Gold Saucer or depressing deserted housing districts?
For some people yes. There's a lot more in the game than just fighting. I understand that there is a crowed of people who only want to have battle content. It's unfortunate that the game doesn't give you what you want, but I have to ask. Do you expect one game to give you that? The only reason I brought up gold saucer and other things is because it really seems like people think there is no point in doing anything unless it facilitates end game big number fluff. I'm really not trying to sound rude, but it seems like people take "try playing other games" as an attack.
I’m not going to embrace playing other games when i’m paying a sub. I have a right to call out a lack of content or decrease in quality of content since yknow…i’m one of the people paying for it. If this was a free game sure, but it’s not, we all pay for it. Jumping around aimlessly can be done in most games.
FFXIV isn't really built for 'parkour'. Even the jumping puzzles that do exist are notorious for awkward hitboxes when trying to land at a specific angle. To say nothing of the existence of actual games built around parkour such as Dying Light providing a far superior experience for those who want to indulge in such activities in the first place.
Furthermore, it was first proposed in ARR - almost a decade ago - by Yoshi-P for players to just go and play other games. A statement echoed by many of his devout fans. Yet this far into the game's lifespan? I daresay we're at a point where the game should have more meat on the bone when it comes to each new content patch.
The fact of the matter is that a lot of us manage our free time rather well. We do play other games, we have other hobbies and we go to work. I don't think I've ever encountered a game's community with such a large group of players with an apparent allergy to getting more bang for one's buck.
I certainly think I'm getting my money's worth and no, not just by jumping around on houses. I did that on a whim. My point is that there is a lot more to the game than just fighting. If fighting was all this game had I would have quit a long time ago.
That's fair, but others did.
This image comes to mind. They don't even try to market the game as hardcore.

It's perfectly fine if someone doesn't partake of Gold Saucer but it *is* content in this game and there are plenty of players who do it and enjoy it. Crafting and gathering isn't battle content but it is content as well.
In 6.1 we're getting adventurer plates and I know people who already are talking about how much time they're going to spend getting theirs perfect. This isn't just a game focused on battle content. They put out a wide variety of things and we pick and choose what we like. But we're always going to come to a point where we run out of our first choice and either do a different type of content or amuse ourselves elsewise in the game or just take off that night and do something else.
Every patch there are literally people complaining that the MSQ is too hard.
People can't seem to:
Complete solo duties.
Play as other characters.
Cope with other players in group content.
Cope with Trusts.
For some people, yes. :^)
I've savage raided since Gordias and did ults for a bit, and I do dabble in other parts of the game. Fishing, grinding FATEs (I think the bicolor gem shop was a step in the right direction even if the FATEs themselves are not the most engaging) Eureka, and yes, running around housing districts when I'm bored because I like seeing the creativity of players. Does not change the fact it's depressing and empty outside of Limsa, unless you are right at the release of a patch...
And that's beside the OP's post, which is the idea that the average battle content itself is not engaging enough to want to partake in.
Personally, I've never had many issues with content, in fact, contrary to how active I am, I still have plenty of content to do, but then I don't exactly discard content as non-existent because I don't like it.
I would like to see the relic come around earlier, however. Between 6.2 and 6.3 it's going to look to be an extremely busy time, between relics, deep dungeon, raids, and so forth. I don't really see an issue so much with how much content, but rather than when we actually get said content. They could really do themselves a service by spreading out their releases better, which is the only feedback I have. That being said, I still don't know why they haven't adopted elements of Eureka and Bozja into the open-world zones, as opposed to just running the wheel again on gemstones and the occasional zone boss FATEs.
I don't know why people get so insulted by the "Try other games phrase" - Despite how dismissive it is of complaints, it's still very reasonable feedback. This is a game that accommodates a wide range of players, which depending on your interests can be a good thing or a bad thing. Ultimately it's just very difficult to accommodate a wide audience whilst giving everyone what they want without creating artificial longevity of content. Sometimes the developers just gravitate to a different mindset which doesn't necessarily align with your own.
The content that drew me to this game is battle content. If it has nothing to do with fighting, it is unlikely to interest me or get me to chase after a reward unless it has something extremely sought after at the end of it. This did not hold for Ishgard Restoration for the most part. This also does not hold for Gold Saucer. Gold Saucer activities are jumping puzzles and minigames, not fights.
You cannot sell me a sub on minigames alone. Thank goodness I have an army of alts and a backlog of gear to collect, otherwise there would be no justification to stay subbed beyond the first month of these earlier patches that lack relic/exploratory content.
Adventurer Plates I fully support as they are a good avenue of player expression and do not have the massive accessibility issues that Housing does, and are likely to appear at the start of instances moving forward like they will start doing in PVP in 6.1. They are not as pointless as stickers, nor are they as limited as most fashion accessories, who I remember got over 30 minutes dedicated to them in a Shadowbringers live letter once.
I am thankful that patch 6.1 will be giving me at least something long term to do in the form of the new PVP gear at the end of that grind, but I see no reason as to why things like a Deep Dungeon or the first step of a relic *must* be delayed for so long after initial launch.

Seriously? Ads like these do practically nothing to draw people in, except the Animal Crossing twitter crowd maybe. What drew me in was the cool looking Black Mage and Gaius CGI art back in ARR. I promise you that there are more people here for battle content than there are for housing that has historically always been a hassle to get into and crafting.
