Specialist System in 3.0

You need to get through Stone Vigil (around 41) to do Ixali dailies. Initially though, I just made it though the first 3 dungeons and Ifrit. It makes for a nice quick daily low level roulette, and that's when you join a GC for daily GC supply/provisioning, retainers, and chocobo.

Well, I don't think Ixali tribes will actually be too important once expansion hits.. Also, the sealants simply aren't worth the grind imo.. I just buy mine when I need it and it comes out to about 30k per oaknot.. I'd like to think of it as skipping a quest for 30k gil.

The first 20 levels worth, untill all the features like GC and retainers are unlocked. It's also worth picking up either a tank or healer for faster queing, but as you will spend a lot of time crafting anyway it's not needed per se.

As for story related gating into Ishgard, I suspect it will be required for all characters, crafters or not. So it's probably a good idea to get those out of the way if you have the time/will to do so.


Note on the alts: if you plan on leveling multiple ones for Heavensward, its a good idea to get the above features done on all of them first. That way you can do Roulettes/GC and save up leve allowances on all of them at once, which will save you a lot of realtime. The leve allowances especially is important to get started asap.


Also it's worth noting that you need to unlock each levemete you plan on doing courier leves at.

The Ixali daily turn-in is nice exp, as are the 5 other daily quests. They'll make for good exp from 50-60 once the expansion hits. Plus with the main story being a gate to Ishgard, it's worth finishing getting it done in case something nice is hidden behind them.

I had my mules still just after Ifrit when they released sealant, and got them up through Stone Vigil fairly quick. I was going to save the huge pile of quests for exp when they raise the level cap, but I'm just gonna spend some time the next couple weeks getting them caught up.

Crafting is way to hardcore as it is, a game shouldnt be that. i play a game to have fun, not punching a kitten for not able to craft a damn gear

How it goes is this: All crafting can go to up to 60. (Fishing is not bound by this and other gathering does not have any levelling.) Here's a discussion on ZAM, which has always been a pretty good source on FFXI. Apparently they upped the threshhold to 70 and the top level to 110 since I was playing. As far as the level caps unlocked by the guildmasters, that's abundantly obvious to anyone who's levelled a craft to 10 in FFXI, since you then stop levelling that skill until you go get it unlocked by the guildmaster.

lol seriously, it is NOT that hardcore, you already have the gear for manual II, you just haven't figured out your rotations.. Which is perfectly fine, just don't expect to be spoon fed everything and posting in every thread complaining about the difficulty of end-game crafting.. It's already trivial as it is, there's almost zero risk to crafting 4 star items..

I started crafting on my alt last week, I have now have 6 classes to 50, 4 geared for 4* and 4 of the Master II books. By next week I'll have all 8 unlocked and geared for 4*.

Crafting is very quick and simple, especially these days, it's actually too easy.

I for one, am glad that the end-game crafting comes with a bit of a challenge. That's pretty much what's keeping all the botters and RMT gil buyers from taking over the end-game market because you can't just throw money at the problem and be done with it.

It may make it easier, but it's not hard to make a few mil these days, even without any crafts leveled.

The Master II books that shanvhere has been complaining I got using the blue quest main hand tool, without: reclaim, innovation, inginuity 2, careful synthisis 2. Did that for 4 classes and after making 3HQ for the book, never had the 5 NQ ones needed for supra hand in. So if I can do that, it's pretty obvious they are not as "hardcore" as shanvhere is making them out to be. With all cross class skills and good gear they are crazy easy now.

In order to be 4* capable you need Artisans Off hands. Those arent cheap.
Based on your wording you also had gil for spending on 12 MDs.

Altho I'm still wondering why exactly you did the Master II books with your class main hand. Or how exactly you are 4* capable using those..

But it's no excuse for boasting that its easy and fast to level crafting...and blatently ignoring you just spend over 10 million (depending on server) to do so...
obviously for someone actually new to crafting it will not be so easy or fast.

Offhands cost like 800k, I unlocked the books first, then got Supra, to be geared for 4*

Leveling crafts is very cheap and easy these days.

Getting 4* unlocked and geared is more costly I agree, BUT it's Not Hard, like the other poster is claiming.

Also making 10mil these days is not exactly difficult, even with crafts leveled. Could easily do it in a week spiritbonding, on my server atleast.

That doesn't seem right. Imagine a long play session of 4 hours. And you're doing two of those, so 8 hours over the weekend.

How much time would it take you to create enough sets to make 10 million, and then you have to spend time melding all the pieces, how much would it cost you in base matts, how much time would it take to run Karn Hard mode full clear? There is absolutely no way you could make 10mil in gross let alone profit in a weekend sb session.

Once people have a bankroll of gill and matts they forget how hard it is to make money. If someone had no matts and 1 million gil, they couldn't turn that into 10 million over a weekend.

That's one reason we all need to be saving our pennies to go into heavansward with a huge bankroll. I'm wildly unsubstantiated guessing airships will be over 100mil.

I said week not weekend.

There's honestly nothing "hardcore" about the current crafting scene, especially if it's in regards to unlocking the recipes. It's always been about numbers, planning how many steps you need to finish a craft, how many CP you have for durability restoration/100% touches, and praying that you get goods for TotT or no fails on your 80% abilities.

Hell, even in regards to the book if the stars didn't allign, you'd straight up trade the NQ items to refund the important items to try again (demimateria, the x3 items and the GC seal item).

All crafting takes is time, money, commitment and some RNG.

By forcing specialisation similar to FFXI's style It would allow square to make it easier to be a top crafter because not everyone can be the best at all crafts, it was similar to desynthesis where you had a set number of levels above a certain threshold of which all jobs could be levelled to so you could distribute your crafts equally but then you are unlikely to make any money so it just made sense to use all your levels on one craft and get that to max whilst the others sit at cap. If you levelled another craft above the level it would take one away from the other.

Then the issue with FFXIV's crafting system is it is too easy to cap every craft and then use all the skills to make everything so they had to create barriers to the highest crafted stuff by making it quite a grind to get the higher level craft weapons and require some investment into materia to then make the market more stable. By forcing specailsation no single person can craft all equipment provided they got the gear, that means they can make the barriers to entry easier on the hardest to craft stuff as you have already made it significantly rarer by limiting each person to one craft at cap. I would assume by following this method they could make it easier for people to be a high level crafter, for instance a newcomer to the game right now would have an awful grind to get all the key jobs to cap for the skills and accumulate a decent amount of gil to buy the top gear before grinding for a lucis. Heavensward should reset this (although the grind to 50 to get all the skills will not be likely to be removed) Introducing specialisation will then allow any newcomers to not only catch up but then not have to level all the crafts to 60 ontop of the grind.

I agree 100% that 100% HQ was pretty bad. The current set up is only marginally better. FFXIVs crafting system is already better than most MMOs, but the frame work is there to go far beyond.

Blind optimism wants me to believe they'll differentiate the DoH classes more so that a GSM isn't a CRP in different clothes, though with the artisan gear even that isn't entirely true. But I'm talking about real differences that make CRP synthes require different skills and approaches to completing their recipes so that the play style between BSM and ALC would be like comparing Monk and Dragoon or Scholar and White Mage.

Crafting too me, is like playing a game of solitaire, part of the fun is that solitaire is a game that sometimes you can't win. I don't think that's necessarily bad design. In fact, I'd argue most people like slot machines and gambling against uncertain odds. I'd also point out that a synth you can't win, is just a less than 30% chance of HQ. I've gone 38 steps without a good proc before and I still came out around 20+ %.

So unwinnable is still winnable. AND even if you do NQ... in the case of 3* 4* items you still make money. You just don't make as much money.

To be fair, the 100% HQ macro part only really happens when you either

It's just that right now, NQ items (esp the offhands) are worth less than the materials used to craft it since you can't realistically meet some of the requirements for 4 stars. Same deal when it comes to combat gear or accessories (kirimu coat comes to mind). ... At least on my server, NQ stuff barely sells for 300-500k (compared to a 2.4m HQ, and each sealant costs 200k on average) unless it's strictly for glamour.

We;re also at the point for most of the important 4 star crafts that you're still at the mercy of RNG even with HQ mats when possible, due to the diluted quality pool with the demimateria/sealants/etc. The amount of quality needed is so high that you can't strike a middle point when the bulk of the increase come from BB. It doesn't happen as often considering my current gear, I'd say its 1 out of 10 crafts on average.

The quality bar is a nice idea for crafting, but it's an illusion of choice. Also, with some of the artisan gear it still comes down to chance. I've messed up at least one 4* because I got no TotT procs and failed 50% of my hasty touches.

I'm surprised Artisan off hands even sell for you. The only people that would want them can usually make them anyways. It's self-defeating.

It sells because so many people fear 3-4 star crafting.. They don't realize just how much bad luck it takes to screw up a 3-4star craft.. 4 star is almost easier than 3 stars because you can have so much starting quality from hq mats.. I see some crafters who subscribe to the idea "steady and slow wins the race", but that doesn't work in FF14 :D

The DoW/DoM items are pretty easy to do with a 50% full quality bar. The Artisan/Forager stuff is pretty easy to get some bad luck on. I'm not saying it's on par with 100% HQing Wootz Ingots, and the like, but the Ehcatl Sealants and Mastercraft Demi really cuts into your quality bar. I think the design was that the end product is really easy with all HQ mats, but the mats themselves are challenging. Think back to 2*, Darksteel Ingots were harder to HQ than the items you used them for. It's the same concept just balanced better because the Ingots and the product have the same quality and progress bar.

That supports the concept of bulk crafting things like kirimu leather (which has no HQ-possible mats). You'd only need a minimum of 7 successful touches to get a 100% HQ on a 4 star if you had 2891 starting quality. Even then you're going to have some RNG because of CP constraints and rapid synthesis, but that's a lot more helpful than having to start with 1.1k max and requiring 10+ touches.

Sadly this only really applies to the crafted body pieces, all of which aren't exactly practical except for the bard's kirimu coat.

Under other circumstances and contexts, yes, a more open-ended question is generally more conducive to conversation. However, I really just want to make sure this one specific concern is understood and addressed. Besides that, I don't believe Yoshi has given a one word answer to questions in the live letter before, so if this question is chosen, he will probably say other things he sees fit to disclose.

Frankly, I also like this type of design. It gives value to HQ mats by removing risk on the end-product. It's ok that Wootz Ingots/Kirimu Leather start with 0 quality because even if you get 3 out of 5 ingots HQ that's a massive help on the chest piece (the 2*/3* mats are pretty trivial to HQ and help immensely). The sad thing is though that people that would use these items generally don't buy them from the board, they just make them themselves.

Doesn't really matter though when most of this stuff is only purchased for glamours. The BSM i95/i110 weapons just stand out as examples of this.

That's 3* so if you're BiS and screwing that up on any kind of regular... your rotation is wrong.

For the other stuff you mention, that's because sellers have decided to sell it at a toxic price. Perhaps because the profit margin on HQ is so astronomical. If you're selling 2.4mil for a kirimu coat, how much do you make off of that? On Balmung they cost like 300k to make.

NQ is not worthless on my server. And Many items have stat caps that allow for various melds to make up for NQ vs HQ almost all the foragers' and artisan items do.

I'd assume RiceisNice was referring to these crafts when they first came out. The Artisan off hands had a tighter margin for error when they were first released and not everyone had Supras because of Mastercraft demi prices. That being said a NQ artisan off hand wasn't worth the cost of the mats used to make it. HQ Artisan off hands hardly sold at all because the people that would use them could make it themselves.

I can't speak for you server, but crafter/gatherer gears sold way better than the DoW/DoM items on my server and still do. (thought a lot more people selling them now ofc)

Your right that these people should be able to make their own if they are heading to 4*, but you would be shocked how many would rather pay someone like me to make them for them.

Sealants go for 200k on average on my server, and the HQ offhands easily sell for as low as 2mil. NQ ones sell for a little less than 500k; you don't really need to do the math to see that's a huge loss just from the six sealants alone.
