People built up expectations based on implications by Yoshida. You're right, there was little to go off of, but that is another issue with this situation. We were deliberately kept in the dark so that SE would have little accountability in the off chance that they had to implement their plan b - the current state of personal housing.

Yoshida did not admit to any mistake, he placed the burden on the players by suggesting that we misunderstood him when he explicitly stated that personal housing would be cheaper than grand company housing, not that personal housing would be cheaper relative to the current pricing of free company housing:

"While I cannot give a specific date on when personal housing will be implemented, I can say that prices will be completely separate from free company housing, and, naturally, far more affordable."

Ok, honey I was gonna go for personal housing IF it was any different from fc housing and was a little disappointed as well considering I worked up a few mil in a short time span and no? LIED is when you say it's 2 mil over and over then go oops i meant 20 mil at crunch time. They said it'd be CHEAPER cause people were worried about the prices THEN. Look at the date when they replied it'd be lower, then tell me about lying yeah?

Btw, it's not GC housing, it's FC housing and it is LOWER than it and honestly? all you're saying is that people assumed that it'd a certain way and I personally agree, I for one did assume it'd be separate too but that's the problem with assumptions they aren't Facts and aren't always right.

You're trolling because you're repeating the same argument despite it being addressed, for no other reason but to make people angry. Yes. Trolling.

Nobody claimed anyone was perfect. Re-read the post, actually re-read it without adding your words to it. You're trying to distract and it's not going to work. I'll spell this out for you very simply.


1) Yoshi made a statement that the JP, and NA, and EU all saw as
a) Personal housing would be separate
b) Personal housing would be cheaper than FC housing

This is not a mistranslation as the japanese players saw the same thing we did on the NA servers. Drop that now. These statements were crystal clear and unambiguous.

2) The current housing plan (sharing FC resource and FC plots) had been the plan for some time prior to the patch. This is conjecture, but knowing what I do of development shops, this sort of decision is not going to be put into place the night of the patch. It would carry too high of a risk of causing bugs. This code had been smoke tested,qa'd, and UAT'd before it was rolled out.

3) Yoshi had time to amend player's expectations and didn't.

There was no misinterpretation. There was no mistranslation. There was no miscommunication because there was no communication at all.

They said that when FC housing first came out, prices lowered since then. People were worried at the time that we'd need about 10 mil for personal housing since that was roughly if not more what a SMALL house cost which at the time was only one floor. Since then the prices have decreased and became much more affordable along with small housing also gaining a basement from the fears of some not having an airship and complains that it was too small because it was the size of what your personal rooming was currently.

Edit: and I'd think that it was a lesson learned. but never know.

I propose a solution: Free To Play.

I believe a Free To play Final Fantasy 14 could open up housing to more players. That way, some of us would not have to treat this game as a second job to make gil for a personal house.

Can you tell me what difference price will make if all the plots are sold out? They could be 4k a plot but if there are none available it does not matter. To me, they should have been a separate zone even from the FC housing or something that was personally instanced for a personal house.

Yes, but that still is FC housing. You're arguing that the personal housing prices are lower because the FC prices are lower. That's not what's being discussed. What's being discussed is that the personal housing was going to cost less than the FC housing, regardless of how the FC housing market did.



You're saying FC (old) > FC (new). Nobody is debating that.

Yoshi stated that FC < P

What we got was FC = P.

Also that the wards would be separate entirely. Which has nothing to do with the price. If you're wondering why that's a big deal, it's because FCs in busy servers are already having a hard time getting housing. With this change it gets even harder on them.

Remember the original 2.0 screenshots up to Gamescom 2012 that had the old battle system displayed? Remember the comments since 1.x about Crystal Tower being released at launch? FC summoning still not added, still no word on Golden Saucer when it was estimated by them to be added around 2.3-2.4. It's not like it's the first time these "misinterpretations" and last minute changes have occurred and certainly not the first time it's happened to housing either, what with the comment about how the cheapest FC housing option would cost "about 3 times what a new player can get by leveling from 1 to 50 through the story".

The trust was lost and not really regained a long time ago.

That's a separate issue, but I agree that it is another disappointing side effect of shoehorning personal housing in with FC housing. It's just not what we were discussing.

imo they should have been separate systems entirely, with personal housing being slightly smaller than company housing with smaller ward zones to justify lower prices (as was implied), to accommodate server issues and so as to not invalidate FC housing. Wishful thinking at this point, though.

It actually got worse. Between the Eorzea Cafe video (which, sorry folks who made it, that stuff looked really staged) and the responses at TGS, it seems that they're doubling down on it being the player's fault.

I know, i didn't say i was no longer angry... My account on FFXI is still active, the patch on this game are fun, there is a test server, they communicate on the next patch and give us exactly what they promised, i think i know which one of this games deserve my money

I'm holding out hope on 2.4. I really am. In the same way that Boston fans hold out hope for a win against the Yankees. I still want to like Square and Yoshi. They're in a bad PR bubble because, now that they've dug themselves in, they keep talking when they should just lay low and wait for 2.4 to change the subject.

It's sad that it seems like their strategy was to keep us in the dark after initial statements about housing just so that they'd have no accountability when called out about it if things changed. I don't know that they'd want to make Yoshida look like a liar, though, considering he's the darling of the community.

It would also take considerable effort to implement a separate system for personal housing, which I'm guessing is the reason we got this mess. I'm sure that more than half of the devs are currently working on the expansion, so there may just not be enough resources for it.

You have a good point there. I'm wondering if their PR people can find a way to back peddle gracefully. Had he just gone with the "Oops! We should have mentioned that" angle instead of "You guys just misread it" one, it would been so much better on him. You're right about how people think of him though. Maybe he could still mea culpa and have it all smooth out.

Yeah I'm really surprised that that post did not have more oversight. I mean it had to go through several hands before it ended up on the boards, I'm sure. It's just so dismissive of the community response, and so uncharacteristic of Yoshida, and his team. It really does feel like they knew that this was coming for a long time and had all ready prepared their defense - his day of patch post, and lack of information up until the patch notes being the most significant evidence of that. I'm not sure that they expected it to backfire as bad as it did, considering that their damage control since then has been just as bad as those first posts.

I could see him maybe addressing it in a live letter, though, unless they decide to bury any mention of the controversy going forward - which I could also see happening since it's pretty clear that they carefully hand pick a lot of the questions to respond to during those things, and it's been their strategy to avoid all discussion of atma, personal housing could suffer the same fate. Who knows, maybe they'll surprise us in a couple of patches - they do have to find a solution to the server issues after all, maybe they'll completely revamp the housing system (wishful thinking!).

Fair enough. I do get what you are talking about, Yoshi-P said one thing and something else happened. I don't see why this is such a huge deal. Have you never changed your mind about something? You don't need to answer that and I'm fairly certain any situation you would have been in is much different than the situation with the housing. There are many reasons for secrecy behind their choices and what information they divulge to the populace and many more reasons why they may have to adjust or change their original vision. While i'm not condoning the choices they made regarding pretty much all aspects of personal housing, I will defend their right to make changes without having to spoon feed us on the entire situation.

Honestly, the way the question was asked and answered specifically regarding the 850K that sounds like me answering my kids when I'm trying to suprise them with going out for dinner. And regarding your quote you keep bringing up "completely seperate from FC housing(or whatever)" How long ago was that made? I'm sure you have that link close and handy cause I don't actually recall when it was said but I do remember seeing it. Not that time is an excuse but things can change a lot during development which is WHY devs are usually tight lipped because changes can be construed as a lie once people take it as written in stone. what he said may have been his intent at the time but pushing out housing earlier he would know there will be insufficient space for personal housing so in order to "gate" it until more space can be added, the huge price would do the trick.

But again, this is all pretty much irrelevant compared to the limited space. Had it been personal instances instead of a public ward, they wouldnt have had to gate the pricing in the first place.

I won't defend them. This isn't about changing minds. This is about the reality of implementing a feature in a piece of software. The changing minds thing doesn't work for this. I have no doubt that the original plans for the personal housing rollout wouldn't work. It probably was completely untenable. Fine, cool, that happens. They had reasons for secrecy? I guarantee you they did.

Do you want me to boil down the outrage into a single, tone-deaf mistake from Square? Yoshi's response to the outcry.

He had a very simple thing to do. He could have quieted the noise down with next to no effort. Instead he chose to tell us it was our fault for "misunderstanding" when I have no doubt that even he knew why players were angry. They had reasons? Fine. Explain it to us like we're adults. Admit that it was a change in plan and don't pretend it was the plan the entire time. People would have simmered for a day or two and then it would have all gone away.

Just a mea culpa with a "I get why you're angry and you're right that it changed from December. We didn't tell you and we're sorry (or we didn't tell you because)".

That was the last thing the players saw about price and how the feature would be implemented. How else would you expect people to react? We only have that piece of information to go on. That's it. Here's the rub. I think they were trying for separate wards. This is just my own guess with what limited information we have. I believe Yoshi when he says there were resource constraints and, again my assumption, this idea was scrapped. When left with what likely was a few months of development time, needing to finish development on a new class and new dungeons and a new coil, the instanced housing just wasn't possible in the time frame they had.

You're right that that would have been the best way forward, but I think they had a way they wanted to do it and just didn't have time for the alternative. So we got this.

Yeah, the old FC housing prices were nuts. It assumed that anyone on a legacy world was, by default, filthy rich. Now it's pretty even pricing with most servers falling into group 1.

why make housing 4-56 million to make it harder for rmt ah right heck no it do not if any thing it does is to promote it and to be honest I used to like xiv even when it was crap bk in 2010 and now this game is becoming more for little kids the end game is not there have to get in a df to spend hours looking for a group who can clear the easiest content only to get hooked up with a group who want to do their own thing and not work together and pf is as bad you spend hours waiting for ppl to show but only to leave when it takes too long so I decided to give wow a try and it is better than xiv is now with xiv I feel like I am playing sims to a degree and I hate those games this game used to be enjoyable and before I get to go bk to wow ppl yada yada I used to hate wow that's what brought me to xiv but now I am leaning more towards more towards it I would play ffxi but one still needs help to clear old content like void watch ect and no one does that crap anymore so it is not fun to me and I have several 90/99's so I am not inclined to continue playing any more I understand giving players what they want but just to cave to players 5-14 and screw the rest of the mature ones with meaningful content and for ppl who claim ffxiv is making it more like wow well if they did they have a long way to go or doing a relly bad job at it and also on the blizzard forums they to have problem where when you log on but only to be logged out to relog in again and they don't have the stupid character cap on typing may be they do how ever I never got that far yet

Thank you for clarifying for me. The reason for the price being the sticking point for forum posters is not necessarily the cost but the communication. I think something the dev team could take from this is to not say anything about future development until it is released. One thing was mentioned almost a year ago and nothing since.

A year is a long time for things to change. Radio silence on the matter (and many other things that are still in the dark, like Golden saucer and FC summoning) can be both a blessing and a curse. I mean, if there is no news then we cant "misinterpret" anything. That is not the ideal takeaway but something that could solve future issues nonetheless.

i could ramble about it ad nauseum but I'm sure I would bring nothing new to the discussion and even less to making any significant change. At this point I have pretty much resigned myself to slowly building up a fortune for a house while I wait to see just how much more space they add in 2.4. if the new wards fill up as fast as they always do, I wont even bother. which is a shame. I really wanted a house... at least I have my inn room.

Mind you, even with these prices not being seemingly different... they would never reach this low with the old prices due to the cap limit of how low they were able to fall and now they will be half of this in october.

I think you're right. As much as people want details early, if the feature is still in flux and nothing is finalized, the best bet is to tell us to "stay tuned". Then if people get disappointed, it's not because something was put forward by SE, it's because they speculated and had it not turn out how they wished for it.

Good luck with it. Your server is one of the harder ones to get a small house on. Hopefully the doubling of the wards will give you a chance.
