I will concede that I get what a lot of others here are mentioning, that getting into the pure math of the situation that it shouldn't make that big of a difference. I took a look at the math, and ultimately agree, it doesn't look designed to break anyone's personal bank.
Conversely though, I'll confess that I'm not a fan of the possible change or even the fact that SE is looking at things like this. This probably stands out to newer players to the game rather than those who have already been playing for years and are financially more secure (among other things), but for many of us we're just getting to the point of either having the gil or the aetherite tickets to finally start getting around freely and not doing what OP mentioned, needing to do the "mental math" of how best to get to places.
And for anyone that's still actively exploring the game in all of it's aspects, including different zones, there is a LOT of traveling done.
So in a way, it feels like they're wanting to take something away from us that we just got. The math of the prices, I get. The aetherite tickets though? Man, I just finally got to a point where I could start collecting those and omg, such an amazing feeling! But I won't lie, the thought of those getting nerfed is annoying.
Taking things away from players is always a bad idea. It's one of the big reasons why I left WoW; they made it a trademark to give players with one hand, then take away with the other. I'm not saying this game is anywhere near as horrid as WoW, just noting something that a lot of us are likely gun-shy about and don't like the feeling of.
