I'd understand if that were the case (healer not taking any pre-emptive action) but when I've already shown I'm ahead of the attacks and have it covered, and they still insist on doing it, I find it annoying. Besides, if he's setting up for a Double or Triple Spark, there's no way I'm staying in CS anyway.

It's like ACNs who constantly Physik themselves when there's no need - not only are you not trusting me to do my job, you're wasting time that should be spent doing yours.

The latter case is infuriating because it kills their DPS. If they could heal the mobs to death, I wouldn't mind, but obviously that's not the case. Hence why healers DPSing = good and DPS healing = stop wasting time.

The former case I understand, but it's more irritating because it's usually an example of gratuitous Stoneskin. Unless you are doing content at the minimum ilvl (and playing with tanks who don't manage CDs correctly), that Stoneskin really isn't very helpful. I'd much rather that the tank keep whacking the boss and allow me to zap him back up with one or two big heals than have one or both of us consume an additional GCD for unnecessary mitigation.

I generally see it as subpar PLDs that have no experience with damaging tank busters and having to rely on a cooldown rotation if SS is all they are going to use. It's part of playing the tank job well, using appropriate mitigation for the situation. That is like saying a BLM should use Physick when they can to heal up damage because they have the skill killing their DPS. No, they should use the right mitigation skills for their job: Eye and/or Apoc to allow them to keep going. Same with tanks, instant cooldown while still hitting the boss.

Slow stoneskin casting time for 10% that maybe too late once it hits, which a healer can or likely already casting on you? Or Rampart instant 20%+? A lot of times we know they are even saving even Sentinel in their back pockets, but for what? Hallowed Ground is the only one saved for getting sucked in the portal.

The one does not exclude the other, a tank CD could still be used.

Comparing that to a DPS casting physick is totally off it's pathetic...

It's obvious to everyone that the PLD stoneskin is not necessary there, my point was it's not worth being mad about said tank for using it.

Just did an Alex 3.. Friend ran a parse. Whm cohealer complained of low mana and I commented I saw medica 2 a lot. Friend checked skill listing...

Similar experience recently, actually.

Doing Alexander 1 with two friends, running a parser because they were interested in their numbers. I go in as a White Mage, and I get an Astrologian co-healer.

Standard fare, buff up, Diurnal Sect, walk over to Faust and all that. I scratch my head when the Astrologian casts Aspected Helios when fighting Faust, and repeated Helios castings after that. No worries, the off-tank is able to get mobs off of her in a timely fashion, despite constantly overwriting her Aspected Helios HoTs and using Helios like once every five seconds.

The same process repeats for the Oppressor and its plainer twin, naturally. I guess it's a bit more useful to AoE heal on that fight compared to Faust, but...

Once everything's done, I get curious to see what the Astrologian's overhealing looked like.

Well, I dunno what others think, but I'd personally be very upset if I somehow ended up with 94% overhealing. If anything, I was impressed she managed to maintain her MP for so long without a Mage's Ballad, but still... :p

Well, some people hate the thought of anyone falling below 100% HP.. I can't imagine how they are in dungeons. :(

After checking through all the DPS in that run as well, my friend was horrified beyond words. Both bards were singing ballad (so they never ran out of mana, yay! ...and gimped their damage).. one of those ended as #2 DPS. The other only used Heavy Shot once, Straight Shot 5 times, and Windbite 174 times.. And the ninja never used any of his dots..

Really, we were amazed we got through with only one wipe.

I overheal too, can't explain why but seeing a health bar partially empty nags at me haha

Anyways, horror story

Ran Dzemael Darkhold the other day, A freshly minted Lvl50 tank in regular Ironworks gear and iLvl90 right hand side mostly, a silent dps and a loudmouth 'green leaf' dps haha I was playing AST

Tank and loudmouth dps wanna do a first room farm, (this was a DF Party) not a PF one, so the tank pulls everything, all the mobs on the way to the room, and everything in the room, (it's a butt tonne of hurt tbh) I do a fine job of keeping the tank alive for 1 minute while the dps fail miserably at bringing the huge mobs down, I run out of MP, tank dies, I get called a novice healer!?! apparently, I shouldn't have concentrated on tank specific healing, I should have been spamming Aspected Helios >< (definitely a I wish my fist could punch you hard in the face through your screen moments) :D

Considering the gear the tank was wearing, I find it really surprising that you ran OoM as an AST 54 (according to lodestone), regardless of the quality of dps.

Just had an awful tank for Low Level.

I wasn't healing, thank god. But this guy was a level 60 WHM main leveling up PLD, and had no idea how emnity worked. He wasn't flashing, wasn't marking, lost hate to the ACN Bane'ing and lost hate to the healer. Bitched the whole time that the DPS weren't focusing the same target as them. I told them to mark if they didn't want to lose hate and they said they "didn't want to play like a little (censored)". So I just kept attacking ones that went after our ranged so they wouldn't die. Didn't even use Sword Oath even though I pointed out they were missing it twice.

Get to the final boss, doesn't bother to pick up adds or turn off Void Lamps. Nearly wipe because it's Haukke. Managed to live because the ACN started Physicking the healer who was trying to keep themselves alive.

Ugh. That poor level 29 CNJ got my commendation. Poor guy. First run of Haukke and he gets a tank like that.

When I tanked Haukke I asked on the last boss "can you three handle all four lamps?" About half of the groups were "duh, tank shouldn't need to touch them" and about half "why do you ask, just grab one of them". Precisely the reason I asked of course, the divide in playstyles.

Not really a horror story, but I'm still lauging about it.

We were fighting the second boss on Brayflox NM (PuG.) We'd killed the Biast and the Drake was on about 40% when I saw the Machinist running around like he was kiting something. I didn't understand why since we'd already killed the add, until I saw Brayflox chasing after him going "gobbie has present for kindly uplander! shokh!" He spent the whole second half of the fight running away from Brayflox. :p

When I told him afterwards he didn't need to run away, he said "yeah you do or the goblin blus you up." I said Brayflox doesn't do that and he went "ok you don't know the strat cya f*cking noob" and rage quit.

Actually Brayflox will run to someone and the boss will do a high dmg attack to that person if they don't get away from Brayflox (and hence the boss). Maybe now ppl don't care about that (with high ilvl gear and all) but before it was part of the fight to run away from Brayflox when he run to you.

When she does Provoke, right? I do understand dodging when the drake comes over, but he kept running around the arena in circles the whole time instead of just letting her get to him and go, even when the drake was trained on me.

The three of us were busy going all out gung ho on the boss, and all I could see in the background was the Machinist flailing around trying to run away from a tiny goblin. :p

The "got angry when we told him Brayflox wasn't trying to kill him" ragequit made it even funnier.

Was healing The Aery earlier after a 30 min wait in the DF with a full party going in minus the tank. When we got in, we had a level 55 DRK. No problem there normally, since I actually find DRKs easier to heal than WARs 99% of the time. This was that other 1%.....

After he nearly died to the first two trash pulls with me having to use all my cooldowns between the two just to keep him up, I knew something was up so I checked his gear. At first glance, everything looked good. iLevel 130 equips on the left side, and while a pure STR build, good equips on the right. The only thing I noticed at first glance was his weapon being low at iLevel 90, but even then that wasn't that big of a deal. Glancing again and noticing that he had less health than our BLM though, (he was at 8k where our BLM was 8.2k), I still felt that something was wrong, so I checked again to see if I had missed something. That's when I saw it. He was wearing an iLevel 35 belt.....

Anyone who's ever played tank for any length of time knows that keeping your gear up to par is an absolute necessity if you don't want to die immediately. For comparison, and just discussing in terms of survivabilty, the belt he was wearing had less than half the defense, and 17 less VIT points than the level 50 belt you can easily buy from the vendor in Ishgard. Considering that this was a level 55 dungeon, however, most players would have upgraded beyond that through at least vendor or MB gear if they had no luck with drops. I'm well aware that a single piece of gear may not seem like much, but when you're healing a tank, those extra 50 points of defense makes quite a difference, not even counting the added health. If you're counting the health, then he was essentially 40 VIT points short if you take into account his ilevel 90 weapon as well, which equates to about another 600 HP.....

His reason for not upgrading gear that really should have been left behind well before he hit 50? He couldn't equip his level 60 ilevel 200 belt. When I mentioned that since he still had five levels to go before then, so he should probably upgrade after the run, he acted like I was the biggest idiot in the world for even suggesting something of the sort.....

The worst part of this run? He was actually a good tank when it came to getting and holding aggro, and while he didn't use his defensive buffs as often as he should, his rotation otherwise was fine. The main problem was that due to this set up, if I left him alone for more than a few seconds he was on the brink of death against every single mob he fought. I had no room to do much other than AoE heal the other party members unless I had my cooldowns ready to throw at the tank after the couple of seconds I cast a healing spell on someone else. Leveling both myself and helping friends level, I've run The Aery probably 20 or so times in the past couple of weeks, and never once have I had a tank that was so trying to have to keep alive. I guess it just goes to show that stats on gear aren't just there to make it look more appealing.....

Playing with a controller in the middle of a big pull is quite hard to stop and click off the buffs, the problem wasn't Silhouette on me (really, I dare him try and make me get aggro with the 20 seconds silhouette, Shroud and Fluid Aura are a thing) but the smokescreen on the tank just before the pull. It made my blood boil.

A1 yesterday, in DF. A message pops up "someone is new". Okay then... I thought it was my cohealer as he barely had 8,5k HP. Reaching the oppressor and then one of the DPS asked whether there is a strat.

"Nah, buddy, we're just gonna have a nap"

And then I get a quick look at my cohealer's gear, as he obviously isn't the new guy, and was curious about why he had so few HP. At first glance, nothing wrong. Then I asked if maybe his gear could be broken. No reply. And there we go against the oppressor... I basically solo-healed the entire fight, as I soon realized that YES, his entire gear was broken. He tried to spam physic, which had close to no effect at all, and ran OoM after a couple of minutes (scholar!). The fairy would have been a bit of help, if only the DPS hadn't been dying again and again due to failing mechanics for the adds (we got the multi-debuff at every wave of adds, leaving at least 1 or 2 DPS on the ground) We made it to the end, with only myself, the tanks and one DPS alive when I saw someone in channel calling for "fucking LB3 Heal"... Sure mate, that's my intent, I can do my job fine, can you please do yours in the first place ?
Finally killing the oppressor, like 3 seconds before the enrage. Adrenalin...

I was at a low level dungeon(deepcroft) and there was no tank so the summoner took place as a tank and had the black mage dps as I am spamming heals like crazy. How we got though that dungeon was beyond me but it worked.

Sohm Al run levelling my AST with a DRK who clearly had a grossly inflated idea of their ability. Didn't use Grit, used very few cooldowns, and was equipped with melded & strength accessories. I'd normally be happy with the last point, but not when cooldowns aren't being used. Still managed to get through fairly quickly with only one wipe, but not fun at all.

I think it's because of a misconception about WAR healing. Usually it's just understanding what Defiance does for healers versus Grit and Shield Oath. The latter two reduces the tank's damage taken while Defiance doesn't. Defiance raises WAR HP 25% and adds 20% healing potency. So if the warrior isn't being healed or being topped off, the healer isn't taking advantage of defiance. Either way, it doesn't really mean they are harder to heal because they have more HP overall. Some healers come fixated by how much space is between full and remaining HP on their bar and already freak out when they are only at 14k out of 20k+ HP.

As for the DRK...Weapon is actually the biggest deal. It has the biggest gain for threat management and vitality. Having an i90 in a level 55 dungeon is actually unacceptable. Aery drops i133, and the previous dungeon was i130. Shoot they could have spent some gil in ishgard merchant or the drowning knight for an i115 sword at the very least. Healers should just stop carrying these bad/poorly geared tanks through content because they keep going by and making someone else suffer.

Well, but warriors are always getting hit at least 20% harder than other thanks, so defiance does actually come into play before healing starts -- the extra HP lets them live that much longer in a game where 5 seconds (the period of time they must survive before the next heal if you spend a GCD on a DPS) can easily result in a dead tank. And if they've got less HP than DPS, well, you might as well have a DRG main tank, particularly if that DRK wasn't using grit...

Well they shouldn't have less HP than DPS in the first place. Of course I didn't even mention war mitigation skills (yes we all know it can be a foreign concept to DF warriors), as the toolbox is pretty large and full of excellent ways to be tanky while doing plenty of damage.

Even so with damage taken, warrior has the best self-healing skills of all the tanks when skills like Bloodbath, Inner Beast, and/or Equilibrium are paired up with what usually seen as an offensive skill like Berserk. Even just having instant Equilibrum 1200 potency heal every 90s is crazy good, compared to how crummy PLD's Clemency is.

Oh I agree. I just don't like the tendency for people say "Defiance doesn't do anything if you aren't getting heals" because I don't quite agree with it... namely I think the extra HP counts for more than most give credit.

Been levelling my PLD recently, and 35+... has not been kind to me. Though I was the tank, the healers went through even more trouble than I did so I think it's okay to put it here.

One was a Qarn run. I join in progress to find an exasperated healer and two silent French DPS. Despite weapons/ armour being up to par (one was a 50) the DPS output was really bad - turns out their rotations were awful - and the mobs took forever. On the first boss, the DPS kept dying to doom, and neither of them would kill the wasps so someone kept getting OHKO every five minutes or so. Second boss, they kept hitting the guardian instead of the soulstone, and in the final stretch before Adjy, one of the DPS decided to walk off during the biggest pull, fudge up opening one of the hidden doors, spawned adds, and then ran over to us with them and wiped the lot of us. Then in Adjy, both DPS ignored adds - the Sun Jurors were constantly on the healer who was desperately trying to keep herself and me alive, so I had to hold Adjy, take the Sun Jurors, pull them over to the squares, kill them, and grab Mythril Verges along the way while dodging lasers. Me and healer both walk away scarred for life.

The next two were Stone Vigil. One, I was a fresh 41 and had tried to avoid it until my gear/ level was better, but roulette was not kind to me that day. I was squishier than a fried marshmallow and the whole run took 50 - 60 minutes (I had to pull small.) Party wiped a lot. I grovelled and offered to leave a few times, but the party insisted I was fine and that I should stay (why would you do that to yourselves?!) Honestly, they were the loveliest party I've ever been put with, everyone was so supportive and patient - I can only imagine what would have happened if I'd pulled some of those LEET guys. But it must have been pretty painful for them, the healer especially was really pushed to the limit. Poor guy. orz

Next run, I'm far less squishy and things are speedier... until one of the DPS D/Cs. And another one doesn't show. And did I mention none of us were over 45? We managed to clear it (after an intense fight with Izzy, who must have flown into the air 10 times - the other two struggled avoiding attacks and when it happened at one percent to go, I nearly had a nervous breakdown.) The run took even longer than my first time, and it was so stressful... but you get a weird sense of achievement knowing you've 3 manned SV as newbies.

Still needed a hard drink after that weekend though. :p

I had a terrible time with roulettes yesterday. For high, we got into WP HM and saw the pld was badly undergeared.. level 1 pants and dex acc. She only used emotes, no typing, and couldn't hold hate.

The first boss was more of a group effort in tanking - it mostly was on me, dps would pull it off, so I'd heal, boss back to me. The tank hit the boss the whole time yet stayed last in threat.

After, the tank started doing negative emotes at my friend, and I was getting quite grumpy.. So I decided to vote kick after the loot roll. When we killed the mobs at the first stardard, the tank started hitting it while the rest of us continued.. Stopped.. Stared.. Tank had a hissy fit and quit the dungeon.

We got to the second boss and gave it a good try, but it hit too hard and oneshot the dps. Friend dropped out and joined in progress on pld, and we finished without incident (never had a second dps join). Turns out it was the other dps's first time.. What an intro. :(

Reminds me of the time I had the roulette drop me in Pharos Sirius, only for the tank to leave after the first boss. We managed to three man the run, (I was a MCH and had a BRD and a WHM as my two allies), and the sense of accomplishment at the end was practically palpable.....

In regards to your story though, reminds me of the one tank run I did while leveling my PLD for provoke the other day. Got in Tam-tara as a level 16, with the other party members being synced down. Add an AST healer who doesn't understand that AoE healing generates a lot of aggro even when you tell them that multiple times, and it wasn't a fun run.....

Kicked from a roulette for dpsing, despite no one dieing. Smn started spamming cure on tank halfway through and began harassing me saying I should keep tank hp max at all times.

As i tank, i would of stood up for you. I dont care if my HP hits 1%, as long as you dont let me die. That is if your DPSing as well. If you are doing no DPS and my HPs are hitting that low, then we got a problem.

As i tank, i would of stood up for you. I dont care if my HP hits 1%, as long as you dont let me die. That is if your DPSing as well. If you are doing no DPS and my HPs are hitting that low, then we got a problem.

As a tank, if my HP is dropping into the "OH SHIT" range because the healer is DPS'ing stuff, hey, it's all good. Hell, I'll even laugh it off if s/he slips up and lets me die once or twice cause, hey, shit happens.
If my HP is dropping into the "OH SHIT" range because the healer simply isn't paying attention and not doing a ****ing thing, then that healer is bad and s/he should feel bad.
