they never promised a 360 version, so I don't follow you.

Meh, consoles by their very nature have pre-determined lifespans. In fact the lifespan of the current generation of hardware is the longest the gaming industry has seen ever! It used to be 4-5 years and that was it! This does not mean it's not worth developing for the console just because down the road nobody will no longer be playing the PS3. There is still money to be had within the years that it will still be viable.
PC's are upgradable, but notorious for having varying issues on performance because of variety of hardware that can be bought for it. They are cumbersome and difficult to troubleshoot and if it wasn't for the fact that in the last couple years they started adding HDMI to video cards you could not easily hook a PC to your HDTV and play!
Regardless, to play a PC on the sofa you have to spend a pretty penny to buy the equipment you need to make it happen!
Plus, while there are other MMO's out on the PS3 console, like Free Realms and DCUO. Neither allow multi-platforms to play on the same servers. This is still unique to Square-Enix, and I believe has done well in extending the life of FFXI. Neither the PC/PS2/360 have huge audiences still playing all to themselves. If you were to separate them into their own servers people would stop playing the MMO because there would not be enough people to play with!
But since they can all play on the same servers the community can mingle with each other and bolster the population of one server more than any one console could support! Most people can't see the benefit, but it's there and worth getting attention. If FFXI was a better MMO it would be in an even better position than it is now.
XIV on 360 would convince me not to play. The 'tards that the 360 brought to XI made my head explode.

You are yet again wrong, Last FFXI PS2 disc release: 2013 http://store.jp.square-enix.com/detail/SLPM-55298
Lol, sorry. I'm just tired of hearing that SE dropped the PS2. Se has never dropped the PS2, the extremely obsolete IDE HDD's (and no real way to maintain them on a PS2) are the problem.
Heck, SE just rebuilt the updater for PS2 to keep it compatible this year.
The JP release of Adoulin shows that if enough demand is shown in the NA, they could always bring it out.
Oh, it's one of THOSE flamewars, eh? OMG, this is gonna be good!

^^Even HE can't wait for the show to begin!
It just keeps going and going and going. Wish I could create a thread this popular.
The culture of Xbox gamers and PC gamers is very different, and sometimes those cultures can clash. It's simple as that. It's not really because of any particular strength or defect in one group of players or the other.
There's always a bit of hostility between console and PC gamers. I don't really know why but it happens.
Sometimes it's nice to be able to just kick back on the couch too instead of having to sit in the chair. Of course, I guess we could just put the couches in our room, but then we'd have to watch tv in our desk chairs. O.o
I think why bother is:
1.Because bigger families such as my own cant afford 4-5 pc's to all play at once
2. some people cant afford PC's in general
3.I want to lie in bed and play T.T
I personally would prefer the PS3 version because MMOs specifically can take up substantially longer time per gaming session and don't exactly need my computer tied up for that long of a duration if I can avoid it.
And i definitely have no desire to waste money on a 1st release PS4 that's going to malfunction as all intitial models do anymore just for this game and then hope something else decent pops up in the near future to try to valdiate the cost (considering most good titles not really show up when the console starts to be sold).
I went to some PS3 forums to tell them to sign up for the beta to try out the game. About half the people were positive said they would sign up. On the other hand the other half wouldn't sign up because they said they didn't want to try the game because its not worth trying because of the sub fee so they wouldn't even try the beta.
PS3 users are used to having everything free as far as their online goes, and some people are very stubborn/entitled about it. I remember the PSN+ announcement and how some folk tried to boycott it because it had a pricetag for continued access.
Granted, I love my PS3's free online, but hell, 360 players had to pay a subscription for FFXI on top of their Live fees and they didn't make a (huge) fuss.
The stubborn/entitled mind-set not so much the PS3 users, as opposed to the personalities that inundate the PS forums.
I check The Drop fairly consistently, and the users that post their crap on there never actually reflect the PS3 player base at all lol
Reason enough: expand to a larger target audience to boost sales and accessibility.
PC isn't very big in Japan afaik, PS3 is
Some households only have one PC and one PS3 yet multiple people wanting to play FFXIV. If it's just on PC in this scenario then one person is going to be left jealous and pissed off. Computers are expensive!!! It's no fun trying to share a computer either much less makes it impossible for those two people to play together in this situation. So yeah, I guess I'm just saying from personal experience, having a PS3 version not only makes sense but is something very muchly looked forward to!
yeah i remember reading something about ffxiv on 360 and the xbox live service along with the subscription fee were at the root of the problem as to why 360 will or will not get ffxiv. I think Microsoft even wanted a cut from SE with the subs from the 360 users not just the box sales i guess. But its whatever to me were most likely gonna have a big player base from the ps3 alone and if 14 ever gets released on xbox then we will have even more ppl.
The Wii U is certainly capable of the game, but that doesn't mean they're even considering it. And the PS3 was third place this generation. They're not going to do any better upsetting people on the PS4 leaving compatibility out. The Wii U isn't just compatible with basically all Wii games, it's also compatible with all the Wii controllers and accessories.
I also read how 360 was nixed to xbox live. I get mad with xbox live, I never really wanted it but I think it's silly I have to give microsoft another $60 a year to play my netflix when I don't have to with any other console netflix is a part of. That being said it would also fustrate me to pay them to play for 14 and im pretty sure I never needed Xbox live for my XI 360 disk.
Yea you just need silver account (free) to play FFXI, this was when MS was trying to get SE to make games for their system to they could better appeal to the Japaense market.
Fast forward to now where MS charges for everything, want to use Netflix, Youtube, or Internet Explorer, download most new game demos on 360 then you got to pay for live. SE couldn't even work out an agreement with MS for FFXIV so it can't even be released, they said it was live issues or something.
While we're on the topic about Microsoft closed online policy. Even CCP, the company that made Eve Online tried making a deal with Microsoft to develop Dust 514 on the xbox360 but they couldn't.
DQX, an MMO for the Wii and Wii-U. No PC version. No need. The Wii and Wii-U will easy last the lifespan of the game. Which will be 10 to 15 years from now. Now PC gaming, that entirely depends on if World of Warcraft is still exclusive to PCs (and of course Macs). If WoW reaches the end of it's lifespan, or more likely moves to a different platform, PC gaming will take a nose dive and PC gaming will be no more.
Anyone whose says PC gaming will never die, let's talk in fifteen years and see.
