I felt that way about Il Mheg, but i didn't skip everything and say "i don't like the story here"
The way I remember the first Ran'jit fight going was him saying 'I have your measure now' or something to that effect, then immediately winning the fight the same way Zenos did, not getting a sucker punch in when our backs were turned or something. Implying he was testing us then when he 'had our measure' immediately ended the fight. The only difference I saw compared to Zenos was that our second fight was more evenly matched rather than a second easy win for the bad guy, and then was interrupted by the npcs stunlocking him.
I don't mind Alphinaud too much, since he at least underwent drastic character development, suffered for his arrogance and became a better person. Alisae never changed - she's still as arrogant as she was back in the days of ARR. I'm sure I'll roll my eyes when she miraculously finds a way to save both Halric and Ga Bu and has everything wrap up in a neat little bow for her unlike with her brother's trials and tribulations.
There's also a double standard - characters like Alphinaud and Ramza are criticised for their arrogance but Alisae doesn't get nearly as much backlash. If and when she does end up on the chopping block I hope it's painful! It's a shame she didn't go the way of her friend in Ahm Araeng.
I'll agree that he is a lot less irritating than his sister. She'd be that character I perma-benched if it were a single player FF, while I take Thancred, Y'shtola and Urianger in my party. Maybe sometimes Alphinaud and Ryne.
As for character deaths, between Zenos and Emet-Selch there were plenty of opportunities... maybe this time Zenos (again) or Elidibus will strike one down. I just hope it's not the guy who's due to disappear when it's all over anyway, i.e. the Exarch... although his present-time version might be a sensible kill, but probably off the table for the effect it'd have on the plot.
Never ever skip anything. Especially the voice-over cut scenes because that's where all the good stuff happens. The story is definitely not in the very least boring at all. But then again some individuals prefer to play the game rather than read the story. To each their own.
I'm not sure I get the Alisaie loathing I'm hearing.
I loathed Alphinaud in ARR, he was an arrogant little prick who thought he knew everything, and Elai was in a permanent state of wanting to drop kick him. But she grew fonder of him in HW - he can't be all bad if Estinien likes him - and now he's sweet but hilariously inept sometimes still. Alisaie is just hilarious. I love the way she cuts him down to size. I love her passionate conviction. Her hero-worship is also very entertaining. If I'd just had Alisaie and Yugiri with me in Doma, I'd have enjoyed myself a lot more than having to put up with whiny annoying Lyse!
But I don't believe anyone has plot armour except the PC, after they killed off my 2 favourite characters in HW. That had real impact for me. So I do get worried that other favourites will come to a horrid end. Also, to be honest, I adored Emet Selch - he was funny and fascinating and compelling - and I really longed for a final twist where he didn't have to die, even thought I knew it wouldn't happen. And that was a real turnaround for me because I couldn't stand him in SB, I was furious about the whole Emperor is an Ascian thing because I felt it was never foreshadowed, and I sulked when I realised he was going to be in ShB
I can't say I dislike Alisaie, but out of them all she is far from my favorite. She just seems...forced I guess at times. I get it Alisaie, you've got mad RDM skills and you are just so totally awesome and stuff. Good for you! (Still don't care!) And sure, we had an adventure together with the forgettable Lyse, but I still don't feel like she's my character's friend. She gets shoehorned into the action a lot and acts like we're best pals. I'm guessing we're supposed to be, but I just don't personally feel it. Then again, I feel like I would get along with Gaius just fine so...there's that. He's less about talk and more about action now. It's probably just a matter of preference I guess. Up until Shadowbringers I didn't really like many, if any, of the Scions. But now? I don't detest any of them. In fact, I actually like them all now...Alisaie is just at the bottom of the list because of the reasons I've stated. She could be a better character imo if she took things down a notch instead of running around cranking things up to 11 everywhere she went. Think that's why I like Y'shtola. She's got a relatively calm demeanor, and she doesn't need to remind everyone of how awesome she is. She just does her thing and continues about her business.
Wouldn't count on it; they both have plot armor thanks to Binding Coil.Quote:
The hope of Alphinaud (or heck, both Leveilleurs) getting killed is what keeps me going through the MSQ =P
I think your individual character design makes a big difference to how convincing certain relationships seem, or changes the mood of them. Alisaie's friendship with my character (another girl of similar age) is going to seem very different to your older male character.
I also went the whole way through Shadowbringers without picking up on the "Alisaie has a crush on the WoL" thing at all until it was pointed out to me afterwards... but now that I'm starting to play through it with my male Elezen alt, whether it's the awareness or the change of character, I'm definitely getting more of that impression when she's interacting with him. Though it was also clearer in 5.1 with my main character.
Its interesting how different one can view that. I play a female and found her "love" for the WoL to be shoved down quite a bit. Just look at all of her reactions when other characters get close to us. Thats not how normal friends behave thus I have a hard time seeing her just as that. For me she is more like Haurchefant who shows his adoration quite a bit but unlike Alisaie he was still a side character who was not with us all the time so if you did not like him like that you could ignore the few times it happened. Alisaie is one of the main cast and I really wished they would tone it down a bit..that is imo not something subtle anymore and seeing how she is underage its a bit uncomfortable..I wished her character was a bit more other than putting Alphinaud down (even though I love most of their interactions) and loving the WoL.
About plot armor. Honestly the one with the most is Ysthola and it sometimes is annoying..other characters get killed of quite easily but she takes a sword swipe from Zenos directly and with full force and somehow survives it. That is imo bad writing and a huge plot armor. Head of city states being save is imo not that bad because you can at least start to see their characters being developed over the story and not just fear that another leader is killed after a short amount of time..(horde leaders in WoW for example..) I am fine if the plot is written in a way that kills the character in a meaningful way. (Gosetsu imo should have died in that tower) I really dislike killing for the sake of it. That just creates a story where people might just not take a liking for a character anymore because they will probably die anyway.
About disliking the story: I am fine if one did not like the story. I also did not like stormblood and found ARR to be medicore. But skipping it makes the argument a bit weak. There will always be part of it that might be a bit boring. I think that its the problem with telling a game story. But if you then start to skip it all you might miss the greater parts of it too.
I feel that at this point all Scions have plot armour. Sure, some died in the past but now it's been a while, and every time you think you lost them they just come back like nothing.
I don't even like it because it takes away a lot of tension.
As for Alisae, I'm the only one who never noticed her "love" and I really can't understand why.
Have to agree, its quite interesting how many ways people take Alisaie.
Personally I find her attitude... cute for a lack of better word. Her obsession seems to be mainly with our strength (both of character and actual figthing strength) and not quite romantic. She's basically fangirling over the WoL. She might have a minor crush on us, but I don't think she's aware if she does. Given our relationship with the other Scions (or lack thereof), its sometimes refreshing to have someone like her around.
If anything I'm more annoyed with the writers pushing the Ga Bu thing on her for this long. While the lore consequences are interesting, I've found Ga Bu to be rather a hamfisted and boring plotpoint. Thus, making him a major motivation for a character doesn't leave a great taste in my mouth.
Plot armor is... fine? We are filling our dead npc qoutas decently well so quantity is okay. Having major characters die on a regular basis would just devalue the occasion. However the quality of plot armor could use some work... Y'sthola vs Zenos and Nanamo come to mind. Y'sthola vs Ranjit felt miles better because the Emet ex mahina made sense AND served a point besides just keeping her alive, so I guess they're improving.
Its fine to dislike the story (even if I vehemently disagree), but judging after skipping it seems... shallow?
"Y'sthola vs Ranjit" I actually can't make sense of how she had to almost kill herself in that occasion, and only because of Emet-Selch she was saved, while Ranjit survives completely unharmed with no explaination whatsoever. Hello, I'm so cool I can fall into neverending pits without problems.
On Alisae compared to the other Scions, i think that's what makes her seem so caring, the fact that Uri - Y'sh - Tan are basically icicles, so in comparison....but then I see Alphinaud display just as much affection if not more.
I enjoy the MSQ as long as I don't think too hard about it. Once I analyze the whole plot is easy to find all the glaring faults and how bad the writing can be at times. A good example for me is the death of certain NPC at Amn Araeng, the way everything happens is forced and make everyone involved look stupid just for the sake of appealing to my emotions.
Another problem is how, despite the odds, the good guys always end with a "perfect win".
If you character boosted and skipped story.... well its your own fault making the story "boring".
I wouldn't call it perfect, I agree. It has its fair share of writing issues that are apparent when taking a step back, but in the end it has enough positives to counterweigh them. Given the type of medium and the competition available I'd say it still pretty well written, and even if we dont consider those, its still a well above average story for a jrpg.
As for the "perferct win", what do you mean? The victory itself and how its achieved or the aftermath? I aggree with the latter. Things turn out way too perfectly for the allied factions involved after the conflict. With the prior I sorta disagree. We lose people, we lose arguments, a paralell timeline even got obliterated because we couldn't deal with a problem without future help.
That one I just hadwave away with difference between physical abilites: one being a mage and the other an inhuman level kungfu master (with a pet dragon that can fly).
I didn't notice it much either, but for some reason I get a little sister vibe from her, so I must have picked up on it a bit. I guess it's because she's young, and she looks up to you, and your strength and experience. Also, because she can be a little bit of a brat sometimes, as siblings can be.
It's also probably why I get disgusted more than usual when older people say they want to date Alisaie. GET AWAY FROM LIL SIS.
You can also stay away from lil sis T^T
In the german version in 5.1 Ysthola really makes it sound like Alisaie and the exarch are fighting over their beloved WoL and both of them react a bit embarrassed. Then all her reactions when someone like Feo Ul interacted with us. That really screamed jealousy to me. Yoshida I think also mentioned that we can look at her that way too so its kinda done on purpose. (So one can see her as just a friend and another can see her being in love with us) Overall I was fine with it until 5.1 where it was way overdone imo. I mean one could even interpret Lyses behaviour as being smitten with us (if one wants too) but it was at least imo way more subtle written. I really hope that it wont be a theme with her because I believe that she deserves more than that.
About plot armor. I agree, I do believe its fine that major NPCs have some plot armor. But Ysthola is just way too much. I just wish that they would have written that a bit different if they wanted her to survive it all. But yeah better no death than too many. You can write a sad emotional story without death quite good..heck death is a imo often cheap way to introduce some drama..but with the downside of taking out a NPC who could still be developed and often with the need to fill it gap..so you introduce another new NPC that has no built up character at that point.
Not a large opinion, but I don't like Alisae as much, like she's kool but I think her brother - I can't spell his name- is loads better. I even did his story first and then went to Alisae's, it flows much better doing his part first as his plots always hold more weight then hers. Plus he just grew up more, he once started off as a know it all but has grown into a full character and Kitkat's relationship with him feels more natural. You really see the grown he has as a character while alisae is mostly pushed into plots and to top it off she hasn't grown as much as he has. He's simply a much better written character out of the two. As far as plot armor... they are trust now and anime characters so yeah... they are covered and bathed into it, and I think thats fine. Not everyone needs to freaking die like some cheap trick to be meaniful.
The problem is that Yoshida himself has stated that they written her on purpose to be seen that way. (As in either friend or someone that is in love with the WoL) Ryne still feels more pure on that part because she does not show any kind of jealousy towards other people liking us which is shown quite a bit with Alisaie.
I am also not sure why they did that. I know younger people can fall in love with older ones, but in a game where they dont let us be teenager because they fear bad press if people use it for lewd stuff, I am a bit surprised that they made a clearly underage character into someone that can be easily seen as in love with us.
Yes, Alisae is the firey, but also quite vulnerable little sis, who demands all of your attention,
Ryne is the polite, uncertain (at first) lil sis,
and Alphinaud is that talks-too-much lil bro, who you have to admit is pretty smart, who can also draw really well.
All of them must be protected from creeps :V
Shadowbringer story is good that isn't the issue.
Though I have a issue and few friends and cousin his wife have a issue with equipment system.
The routine has never changed its not updated even though the routine hasn't change the problem is that I can beat the content using my relic gear after hitting my level cap, I do not have to farm because everyone knows that the caps on gear are lifted and you can farm them freely though why would you need to do that? if you are good enough to take on the next set of monsters and bosses you only need to upgrade your weapon and maybe a few rings.
After content is beaten all I do is quit till next expansion I got no house to worry about the content I see is not worth it, I don't care for pvp, I don't care for side quest since its a gil sync 999 teleports no thanks.
I used to play FFXI I loved the freedom to wear a weapon I wanted or gear which had its own things like multi hit I am sure people say oh go play that then sorry no thanks the game died years ago when they started rehashing monsters.
NM's were fun and hunt's aren't NM's-
dynamis was okay except the cost for hourglass
teleporting for free was the best I mean who is getting this gil
farming was fun but in ffxiv there is nothing keeping me in the zones or making gil, I simply tell my retainer to go out and make me money or spam dungeons.
abyss killed ffxi with the level 99 i believe 75 was the sweet spot
ffxiv is great I love nostalgia but there needs to have more stuff for zones that already exist equipment gain needs to change and the way we do things its becoming stale.
for some people they only defend it because they haven't done it all yet and for those who have finished and defend it they just don't want to speak out of turn but play few more years you'll come around.
it's really going to hurt when people start going to phantasy star online on their ps4's when the NA version is released in west.
im sure people will pay sub then figure why am I paying sub I dont got a house then full time for a while to let FFXIV refresh for them.
She's not real. You realise that, right? She's also a teenager - which makes the context of my post very different to how it'd be if she happened to be younger than sixteen. It's pretty creepy that you'd accuse someone of being a horrible person just because they dislike a fictional character and want them to be killed off in a fictional universe! Though if I recall correctly, it's far from the first time that you've made such comments.
Given that Alisae actively tries to kill off other characters during the story, I don't see why she should be immune to the consequences of her actions.
WOW. You guys bit into this troll sandwich for 23 pages?! The OP posted one message that was their opinion. A very unpopular opinion. How does this spawn 23 pages of discussion? Shadowbringers is the best story to ever grace an MMO. Nothing compares. You can stop posting here now.
You need to stop playing video games.
When you start believing that a video game is some how connected to real life it's time to hang up your controller and find another hobby.
So when a kid dies in video game like say tomb raider or let's see walking dead I could name more but are you suggesting those developers are sick also?
It's not real it's just to make people go damn that's unreal because it isn't real it's like a story in a book where a axe murder kills a camp full of kids but the front of the book says it's not based on a true story and no kids were harmed in this book.
then you go oh man the person is this or that sorry I just can't agree with you.
Because the same could be said for movies like jason friday the 13th or scream and other movies, in the end they are all fictional not real.
To the extent that she is actively touring with the WoL as an adventurer, she should be at risk. It's not like she's some child being forced into all this - she is a mature enough teenager to make her own decisions and accept that there may be consequences to these, including death.
Funnily enough, I seldom see this defence come up when the topic is killing off Alphinaud.
Beyond that, I agree with Zeonx as well... they're just pixels in the end.
I'd rather they not kill of Alphinaud or Alisae, I like both of them lmao
Though possibly unpopular opinion... I'm glad they haven't killed off any more of the main scions. 2 was enough for me :P
The Scions as a whole have been wonderful. This expansion really helped them shine because they actually feel like they are our friends on a journey that actually help fight. It feels like we're never alone anymore. I use to hate them all lol.
It took so long for them to get to where they are now though. :/
It sounds indeed very controversial.
And yeah, younger people can fall for older, for example, as a kid I had a crush on my sister's friend, who was 18, but sure as hell if it was returned it would have been creepy. The same way, I'd feel it equally creepy if the WoL had a thing for Alisae. Or for Alphinaud for that matter, since the WoL can be any gender and sexual orientation.
Eh, there's a difference between having a crush and "fangirling". And to me, the latter is what Alisae does. The WoL is basically a celebrity. Heck, if I was in close proximity to a celebrity I like I would be pretty excited too, bordering on giddy. That doesn't mean I have a crush. It just means I really like that person and what they are associated with.
There is subtext that she is actually crushing on the WoL. Like when the girl she was working with at the start of ShB gives her a hard time by making a pass at your character.
It's just subtext so everyone can interpret the character how they wish to of course. Same with the exarch
