The only thing that remotely resembles XI's MogHouse in XIV would be an apartment or private room within a FC House.

The reason why it is not comparable at all is exactly what you failed to mention.

In XI, a Moghouse was part of the player's inventory system of the game, which is why everyone got one for free. This isn't the case with XIV having retainers.

I can't speak for Wildstar, never played it, and of course XI we know. But what do these games have that XIV doesn't? Enough housing to fill all players who wanted one. Be it instance, inventory system, etc.

I don't care how it was done, it was done and as PocketVolcano said above, XIV is stuck in a stone age when it shouldn't even be. This game came out four years ago, it should be up to par with the rest of the gaming world but reality is reality, it behind in content like this.

Wildstar is more or less get to level 15, talk to the Protostar guy in your factions home city. That's it...you have your plot in the sky to build as you see fit. The devs even went as far as to encourage players that wanted more out of housing to level alts for another plot(s). Since alts are automatically account bound neighbors. Players could set up their alt houses and take advantage of whatever feature they wanted to on their mains. All plots are there forever. No rent, no anything extra to get to your plot (though you will have to pay for normal FABkit reactivations). Log in daily or log in a year from now. Click your "teleport to house" ability and it will all be there as you left it.

I'll add in too, devs with enough foresight to be able to see far enough to know that all players will want housing, especially when you start adding key game related features to them (gardening, chocobo coloring and training, airships, etc) and want them without being at the mercy of another player who may decide one day to take it all away, and that someday those players may need or have to take a break from the game. Be it money reasons, computer issues or just boredom from pre-patch lulls. That maybe, just maybe its a bad idea to design systems that could potentially make a possible returning player mad enough to be the linch pin in their choice to not want to come back and shower the company again with money along side telling all their friends to avoid so-and-so game like the plague.

Could it be done better? Sure. Did they made mistakes? Certainly. Do we need to tell the devs that by making a new thread on this topic every other day? Really not. I bet they're well aware of the problem - and they're trying to adress it with introducing apartments for example.
If housing is SO important to you... say thanks to Cylla here who mentioned a whole list of games that may or may not are doing it better. (Btw - I've never played WoW but I remember reading an article about one of the expansion that mention that they would be getting housing now... after... I dont know how many years)

I'm not saying that we should voice our concerns and complains about the game - but when it comes to housing thats really just wasting time and words. The devs choose to have the system this way to create lively neighbourhoods and it would have worked perfectly fine if people wouldnt have started crying that they wanted a house without being part of an FC. So in my book opening up houses to indivual players was the real mistake here.
That and not taking inflation into account when its coming to prices - my personal fix to the housing crisis is to push those prices. Currently a casual-non-crafting person can easly get the 4 millions that are required for a small house, making it "Just something else in the game they can have" - I literrally know a few people who bought houses and when I asked why their answer was "Because I could" (I visisted some of them and they look aweful... just a bunch of furniture they picked up somewhere stuffed into corners, pains me each time to see that...)
Houses were supposed to be something an FC could work on together and with the development in the market thats just not the case anymore - my FC (basically me and a friend...) bought a medium house for 18 million gil 2 or 3 months after they introduced housing. We were both 2.0 mastercrafters at that point, crafting good old 1- and 2-star items nonstop - average price was like 30k for one 1-star-item. It took us about 2 months to get the 18 millions. Today I can sell around 12 items and make those 18 millions. So I say one of the main problems with the whole housing situation is that it appears as if everyone can and should be able to buy a house when that was never the idea behing it.
The devs choose the nice neighbourhoods over everyone having a house, but failed pretty bad at getting that message out afterwards...

Personally I feel that prices have to be MUCH higher to make housing something that you actively choose to do, that you work towards - and not just something you get but never really touch because its just another thing you can do. And currently I feel thats often the case with people complaining about losing their home - specially each time I read stories in which people actually had an active sub, maybe even teleported to their house but couldnt bother to step in...

That's a floating eye in the back, and the hill was made from many of the same rocks, blown up, shrunk, and turned on all axis points. This kind of freedom is absent from FFXIV, which it should not be in the Year of Our Trump 2017.

Skybox, ground, the kind of race house you wanted, walls, floors, ceilings, trims, the music could even be changed outside and inside the house, even different tracks playing depending on the floor or staircase. My house theme was "science gone wrong" I used the Falling Into The Sun skybox. I had the Eldan music and ambient's playing inside. Outside umm..I used The DJ is in The House. it wasn't going to be forever, I just liked the song while building. It made for interesting expressions from other visiting players lol...WERE ALL GOING TO DIE BUT YAAAAAAAY PARTY!!!!!

We are not in disagreement, your example of XI just lacked details for non-XI players IMO. What XI did correctly, it allowed individuals not only personalized space, but also other avenues like gardening without restricting the individual based on housing availability. You cannot cross-breed garden in apartments and unless you have access /w a FC House you are screwed.

As a Draken, I felt War was the best theme for outside my house with a complete 180 once you stepped through the door, I turned it into an Alice in Wonderland theme buying a bunch of mushrooms cheap and making them several different sizes. I also custom made a balcony outside and a "third" floor inside by stacking bookcases! :)

Yeppp!!! I honestly can't think of another MMO that had such creative flair turned loose when it came to housing as Wildstar. I was a human Engi though I might have been part Chua lol, so I went with a destructive out of control science experiment gone reallllly bad theme. My Aurin alt was the happy sunny EVEN THE WALLS HERE WILL HUG AND CUDDLE YOU TO DEATH LIKE A SQUISHY PLUSHY theme ^.^

If people thought they were really trying to address the problem you wouldn't see threads non stop about housing.

Apartments are offensive, all they did was remodel a FC house and let people buy FC rooms. They didn't even man up and put all the NPCs or bonus items in that a FC house would have. They also have you sharing a stable with a bunch of randoms. That is a brilliant idea.

They have had years to YEARS to work on this problem. They have refused to admit they made a mistake and no fix now coming up on the second expansion. This is the same attitude we got from the dev team in 1.o. Adding more wards is also offensive, since they can't seem to count number of players.

Let us also not forget that developer resources are put into housing items each patch. If only X% of players can get housing, then housing items should only be worked on equally. Yet they have more items each patch and each seasonal event.

Every time they have a discussion about the player base. They should have to see players are unhappy with housing. Every meeting they should know they made a mistake and have to discuss a fix. Until they either design the system to grow organically per server (HAHAHA) or move the houses to instances and take down the server strain wards.

soooo its fair to let houses sit for months with out any activity in them when others could use that land ? cas thats how it was before the 40 day limit was put in place yea it sucks but hey id rather have a time limit and what not cas if im gona for longer than 40 days chances are i didnt need that house that bad anyways

So pay real money (sub) for a (debatable) big part of the game is okay , and i say this because OP would be paying only for that, but to sell emotes/mounts/clothes its the end of the world, you guys are a joke.
I understand why they put demo timer , and personally i used it to get back a few gil for a new house in shiro (since didnt had anything of value that was destructable), but it is a pretty lazy fix for a big problem, and most housing systems in other mmos are wayy better, i mean you dont have to be a genius dev to think better solutions ... i would trade the current "neighbour" feel for a instanced expandable house anyday.

And they didn't even do zones well. LOTRO has zone housing of the same sort, but they made it accessible. They automatically spawn new neighborhoods whenever all the current houses of a particular size in a given region are taken. Even once your house is locked, it's still yours and you have another couple months before you could lose it if you fail to come back and pay the fee to unlock it. If you're gone for a really long time, and actually lose the house, all the items you had in it (that's ALL of them, no destroy on removal nonsense like FFXIV has) are held by an escrow broker for you to pick up. (Originally the escrow broker only held them another couple weeks, but I believe they updated that to permanent escrow at some point.)

All of that ensures that players who have really left the game won't hold their plots forever, yet anyone who is still playing the game isn't going to lose their house for simply taking a break for a few months. Even after really long breaks, like a year or two, where you could come back and have your house gone, you simply buy another (fairly cheap and in inexhaustible supply), pick up your stuff from escrow, and you're back in business.

I'm not saying LOTRO has a great housing system. (Their decorating system is horribly limiting, with only specific places you can put items.) But they did work out how to make shared neighborhoods work.


FFXIV did everything wrong for having shared neighborhoods. By far the biggest failing is that they released it without investing in the infrastructure necessary to maintain large numbers of them. Then in an effort to address that problem they just exacerbated it by using foreclosure, which should have been only to free up plots after someone leaves for good, and instead put it on a short timer that kicks out people after even temporary absences. Not only does the shortage make losing your house a far bigger problem than it should be, since you can't rely on being able to just buy another, but the cost makes it a far bigger loss than it should be as well. People aren't going to accept losing something that took them months to save up for in the first place. Then there's the fact that many of the best housing items are destroyed if they're removed. (That one's a big problem for housing even if you don't lose your house, and yet another nail in the coffin if you do.) And even the remainder of your items aren't available for long anyway. They've both made housing into the biggest investment in the game, and at the same time ensured that you can lose it all for good at the drop of a hat. That's the kind of thing that can lose them players and subscriptions at the drop of a hat as well.

For short term players, the sort who will only play a given MMO for a few months to a couple years anyway, that's a long time to take a break.

For long term players, the sort who stick with an MMO for a decade or more, it's hardly any time at all.

I have sub time on XIV paid up to 4 year mark andon't realy see going anywhere and with XI I had sub for4-5 years for me my sub is always going as long as I continue to play even it might only be couple times a month or taking a "break" for me taking a break doesn't end my sub if I end my sub for something it means I'm done with it and not coming back.

I agree, 100%. ESPECIALLY when SE said that they would NOT be tying house ownership to a subscription.

Their entire housing system is crap.

[edit] I see folk have been mentioning WildStar's housing. Guess what we're getting in that game soon? The long-awaited Communities feature, where we will be able to link up housing plots into one massive housing structure. I see a clear difference here. In one game, they care about providing an endlessly enjoyable game feature; in the other, they seem to have decided to go with bare minimum effort and stubborn pride.

If they just made personal housing like the Mog House in FFXI I don't think this would be such a problem...I mean, with the addition of the Mog Garden..I think it's rather nice. (Or whatever its called) My FC and I have a FC house since March 2014 and that is good enough for me. I think they should add a lot more wards, and come up with something more creative for personal housing..but I don't mind the auto demolish feature, I mean if I was going to quit I would give the house to someone who would use it. If I wanted to take a break..well having an active FC is a good thing, they enter the house and keep it that way :P

This personal housing system isn't that great...you can't even share it with alts or anything. I think before addressing the auto demolish stuff, they should first fix the personal housing and make is separate..how they claimed they would.

We have a FC house and thats more than enough. And no i don't feel sorry if someone who doesn't pay his sub loses his house because he is NOT paying his sub, easy as pie. And comparing housing and relic is a joke in general...

You're entitled to your opinion but I assure you it's no joke. It's a good comparison because both take a lot of time and effort to acquire. Neither is something that can be earned over night or farming a primal for an RNG drop. You have to invest a lot of work to get them. Secondly, not everyone is in an FC with house so that's not really a good reason.

You want to know something that's easy as pie? The housing system just plain sucks. It's bad. It's not the players fault that SE locks them into subbing to keep it. It's not the players fault that this patch is such a dead drought there's literally nothing to hook the player into staying around until SB. I really don't understand why this community enjoys punishing players so much over little things. Instead of supporting the system people should just acknowledge it's bad and try to band together so we can get them to improve and fix the system. Instead, we only seem to support punishments towards players. And it's not always the player "taking a break" either. The reality is, life happens. Sometimes life bites us in the ass and makes us unable to play for some time, even when we want to play. But as I previously mentioned, this community would rather punish players for having a life outside the game and dealing with reality. I mean no disrespect, but the system is straight up unfair. I compared housing with a relic weapon because how would you honestly feel if you got a message from SE saying that you would lose something you worked really hard to get solely because you weren't online for a month? It's not even like it's several months. It's a month and a half. That's only half a patch cycle.

That's a silly analogy for the precise reason you even stated: it's not limited. The demolish policy was introduced to prevent people from sitting on plots for months at a time; indefinitely should they choose to quit the game. It's hardly surprising Square is more willing to cater towards continuous subscribers than patch loggers. Does it justify their awful housing system? No, but let's attack the actual issue and not toss around false blame. And for context sake, I have a house and am perfectly fine with demolish given the current predicament.

If you were in the hospital dying, do you really think the state of your MMO account in 45 days would be important? But I know you were just reaching for concerns. I've gone away from the game for a while before - it is why I went with an apartment for my character instead of a house.

It is probably to late to pressure them for Stormblood... but we should maybe try to pressure the devs into making an instanced housing plot - seen from the outside this plot would look generic and have no outside decorations. Entering the plot through a 'portal' would put you on an instance for it - they could then have an unlimited number of these... Maybe add them off to the side of normal plots, similar to apartments.

Incorrect.

I don't feel sorry for the OP because they seem to think that they should get special snowflake treatment just because they pay/paid a subscription. So does the rest of the active playerbase, and if they (the OP) are going to inactivate their sub for however long, they need to accept it's possible their house will no longer be there when they return. SE doesn't owe them anything, especially if they aren't even going to be an active subscriber anymore.

I honestly think it's because it has never (and perhaps never will) happen to them. So this crapola is so easy for them to say. And it's not like the OP is asking for any sort of special treatment. They're asking it be changed FOR EVERYONE. Reading comprehension, what is it and why is it so hard. [/sarcasm]

It isn't a matter of fairness. It's a matter of business. A huge pull for people to stay subscribed is housing. Housing is limited, because of smart business reasons and also HOLY MOLY that is a lot of instances and data to keep afloat on the servers, if it was infinite or significantly boosted... eesh.

Anywho, back to the point: You have a big pull for the game in housing. The game is paid for mainly by subscriptions. If you could hold onto a housing spot, WHILE remaining unsubbed, they are losing money from both ends. One end, the usubbed housing owner. The other, the discontented player(s) who cannot acquire the (now unoccupied) slot.

This is the happy medium. Honestly, I'm surprised it doesn't instantly drop upon subscription cancellation. You're essentially hoarding a luxury allocation of their ingame resources while not giving them any money in return.

They aren't doing this because they want to make the people angry, but it's just... poor business to operate otherwise.

That's the fault in your process here. The player has no claim to any assets in the game. You pay for access to assets you use, but the ownership lies in the owner of the business. It's frustrating if you lost something you invested a lot of time to, but at the end of the day the only thing you can lay claim to is your subscription. All else is in their domain, they are just allowing you access.

So because we disagree with his interpretation of how it should be changed "FOR EVERYONE", which includes us we're just not comprehending it? We have a different view on what's fair, I don't appreciate your suggestion that somehow I can't empathize or am too stupid to comprehend what their saying. If you have nothing useful to contribute other than casual insults then go elsewhere.

Implementing it for everyone is just as bad as the current system. Less people will have an opportunity for housing, and people will basically take plots and do nothing with them. I know of at least 3 people who have 3x of each plot type on some servers spread across 3 different characters.

The system needs to be changed, but as it is, the demolition timer should stay to provide an opportunity for everyone to get housing.

Well normally you wont pay a rent for a house ;) you will buy it and depending on the money you have you need to borrow money from the bank. For example our house in real life is completely paid so we dont need to pay for it anymore. So my parents are owning it and as long as nobody else is hurt through actions they can do whatever they want with that. We could for example travel around the world and leave it empty for years and when we come back its still our home. Ingame we also bought the house, we did not rent it. So if we use rl examples then we really shouldnt lose it. ;)

But lets just say we have to pay taxes in real life too for the house. So I just need to make sure that I have enough money on my account and I can still leave the house empty for years. Yet ingame we not only pay taxes (our sub) but we also have to visit the house to keep it..so in a way this is even worse than real life. If we take real life into account, paying our sub should we way enough..but at the same time FF14 is not real life so we should not be burdened with so many negatives for owning a virtual item..(also apartments exists in real life too yet somehow they are ours forever ingame..shouldn't they be exactly like housing?)
