As far as I remember, that was not Koji, but the guy who also sings that deep voice part in the theme for Thok ast Thok.
I've been comparing their use of Ardbert to Wuk Lamat as well. The guy had literally nothing better to do then follow us around and talk to us yet we don't always see him in every scene. We don't have him literally following us 24/7 like a minion, we don't see his reaction to everything, he doesn't have something to say in every scene. He's not the only character Shadowbringers revolves around. Instead we have key moments with him, spaced out over the expansion. Did they realize how suffocating his character would feel otherwise? So what in the world happened in DT?
Hmmm yes no excuse for that wirecross, John Crow, not Michael Christopher. Sorry. https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...sions-of-FFXIV
And as said in theat thread
I think the way Poochie ended up has garnered a much stronger dislike than Haurchefant could have ever been in his true form. They killed him as a result. I do have strong hopes that a future event has a poochie fur rug to wipe our feet on.Quote:
Haurchefant is intended to be received as a good and true ally, but some of his comments directed at the player could, if rendered in EN as it was written in JP, provoke a strong negative reaction for some players
Exactly this! The guy literally had a part of our soul yet he didn't force himself into every scene. And he had 0 contact with people besides us. His presence felt organic because he appeared in the right scenes. He introduced some of the First's lore while developing a bond with us. That's why giving his soul to us felt well-earned and special imo.
And here's Wookie who followed us everywhere. Even after she became dawnservant, she HAD to go with us to Heritage Found. Why not Koana? If they're quote to quote "making a whole Dawnservant together", why couldn't they let us spend time with him? SE made him dirty with the Wookie simping ngl.
And let's not even talk about Living Memory where Erenville had an emotional moment with his mom. It should've been a very heart wrenching moment but the second Wookie says 'well this is the last of 'em', I felt... disconnected and empty inside. If this cat thinks they only need peace, love and understanding, she should've tried to understand how painful it was to Erenville (she also lost his 'Papa' not too long ago). Why was she even there if she can't contribute to their character development?
Benched permanently then we leave the new world unceremoniously for a new *actual* adventure and never see her again
Wonder if anyones compared her lines to any other character, i wouldnt be too shocked if she has more to say than even some of the scions despite being in 1 single expansion (+1 patch in ew)
The same writers who had a love affair with this character? We should be so lucky. To be blunt, the writers also need to be sitting on that same bench or we're going to be right back here in 8.0.
The writing problems are so egregious and numerous that this isn't just "teething issues" with the new team that can be addressed by them stretching their literary legs.
I won't say EN localization make it like super bad or anything, but it feels like trying too hard to be "different". They don't 100% change the meaning, but the interpretation of a dialogue can be different compared to JP (while DE/FR most of the time tries to stick as close to JP interpretation). It's been very long time for me, so I don't remember much and in detail, but some examples I can recall is:
1. Patronizing Amaurotine in ShB is named Charitable/Helpful Amaurotine in JP
2. Y'sthola dialogue in 5.4 (or 5.5, I don't remember) which says something like "we have seen firsthand what destruction zodiark power can cause. We should not let that happen to our star" -> in JP she said "emet selch has entrusted the planet to us, we should stop fandaniel from harming it" (paraphrasing). EN has more negative connotation about zodiark, while also doesn't make any sense because before Zodiark trial in 6.0, we have never see his power. Even when fighting Hades and Wolidibus, their strength is not Zodiark's
3. In labyrinthos when we're waiting for Ragnarok to finish, G'raha muse about the Ancients. This one I don't remember what he said (so you're free to not believe me), but in EN his tone is more judgmental about the Ancients while in JP he's more neutral and actually pitying them.
4. Old examples, but DRK HW quest. JP DRK makes it really clear that "Fray" is Fray's corpse coming "alive" due to our aether (basically meat puppet) and other people can see and interact with him. The merchant who tasked us with retrieving his products directly refer to Fray who accompany us. Meanwhile EN makes it that "Fray" isn't real and it's all in our head.
Now that you mention it, I didn't see her crying too much over her Papa's death. After the credits, she mentioned that they already had his funeral in a cheerful tone. Her main problem was... she was too busy so we didn't have the chance to talk? Girl, we spent the whole msq talking to you and you want MORE? xD
I get it, people grieve differently. But it's really weird when she cried over getting onto a ship (or something similar, it was around lvl 92 quest) than her father's death. She has an emotional level of a teaspoon. Happiness, peace, love, nothing else.

Still, I feel something like that might backfire, since we'd get reminders of our "good friend" Poochie and that would be worse than her simply being forgotten.
Poochie minion that you can't get rid of. Will remind you to go talk to Poochie every 10 seconds. If in a run Poochie pops up every 10 seconds to talk.
"Different" is definitely a good way to put it. I did manage to find a thread (not sure if it was the same thread) that talked about EW localisation so I have an idea of a few of the points you brought up. But DT definitely has had lines where I feel either the general vibe of dialogue came out completely different in EN vs JP, which then characterises people differently too, or the meaning changed but not enough to completely change the plot. An example off the top of my head would be in living memory, when you are exploring the last area with Cahciua, she brings up how Galuf's stories about Sharlayan and gleaners are what she told Erenville to try and motivate him to go see the world because he was becoming extremely pessimistic and withdrawn. Erenville apologises for being gloomy, and Wuk Lamat replies back to him straight after, but the way her reply was translated changes the entire meaning of the interaction imo
EN: If you ask me, you still have some work to do. But it's because you're that way that you're with us now, and I for one am grateful!
JP: 「ま、そのおかげで[Player Name]に会えて、今があるんだから、感謝しとけよエレンヴィル!」Well, thanks to all that you got to meet [Player Name], you should be thankful for what you have now Erenville!
The English turns the sentence around to be that Wuk Lamat is thankful for Erenville being with the group, when the original was her trying to encourage him to be thankful to his mother for her recommendations, because now he has friends like us. The Japanese line feels more like she was saying he's grown as a person since back then, but the English is saying he's still gloomy and withdrawn now but it's because he's that way that he's travelling with Wuk Lamat, which makes no sense. Honestly it feels like a typo or something, because if it said "you were that way" instead of "you're that way" it would be perfectly fine. Also, it's meant to be about how Erenville made a friend in us, the WoL- a moment where we actually have a place in an interaction without it being about Wuk Lamat's thoughts/feelings.
I get the English trying to be subtle with storytelling sometimes, but before I started reading through the JP dialogue I felt like a borderline conspiracy theorist with how much I was reading into things. Reading the JP lines and thinking to myself "oh ok I wasn't going insane" made me feel much better. I understand some people might find translating things more directly isn't as interesting to read, but there's being a bit poetic with your storytelling and then there's just straight up missing out lines and flavour...
Oh wow this thread not locked!!!!
Or they may just let it ride. Because it doesn't matter anyway.
Player input hasn't had a direct influence on the direction of this game since the 1.xx to 2.0 era. Every decision since then is based on player data, not a handful of people taking to the internet to cry about something.
Seems we reached a new low point with this.

Wonderful.
Definitely ridiculous to harass the voice actor. She's just doing her job. If you dislike the character, its down to the writers (but I shouldn't need to say this, don't harass the writers either! They're also just doing what they're paid to.) If you dislike the characters voice, yes the voice actor provided it, but there's a lot more involved than just the one person in the end result. It depends on how they were directed to act, how things were translated etc. Its okay to say I dislike the voice or character, I think these things are wrong with it. It is not okay to lash out at real people over it.
By the same token, it also doesn't help when people who like the character go and try to say anyone who doesn't like it must have an agenda based on the VA... All this does is alienate people who half the time didn't even know anything about the VA in the first place. People are allowed to dislike something and will often have a variety of reasons why.
I dislike Wuk Lamat. I don't like how she is forced on the player in virtually every moment of the MSQ and seems to take the lions share of any writing resources - with nothing to show for it. However I also didn't like her from the start as I dislike very naive and idealistic characters. I myself think the VA is fine and so have no problems with it. I found some of the crowd/random NPC voices a bit overly loud and jarring like they were in some ARR crowd scenes, Y'shtola had something weird going on with her voice that made it sound worse in quality than the others, and I found the Shaaloani voices all very over the top and loud, but I suspect that was deliberate and due to the theme they were going for. None of my likes or dislikes are things that require personal attacks against real people. I think we should all be able to agree that is unacceptable.
Might get hated for that comment, but voice-acting of DT makes me miss Elpis part of EW and ShB Emet'Selch.
She's making it up. If you actually see the context of her tweet, she's replying to someone who said they didn't like the performance and she's acting like people are giving her death threats. Disliking the performance and expressing that to her are not the same as all the crap she's pretending is getting thrown her way.
I dislike her performance of the character and wuk lamat herself, would never even think of harassing the va. thats just weird of people
Yeah, how is this surprising for literally anyone though?
"NOW?" We've BEEN like this. East or West, it doesn't matter. It seems like every tier some raid group, whether they were guilty or not, is the target of some kind of harassment campaign. Remember what happened to JoCat, harassment by the community so bad he had to essentially wipe himself from the internet? Scottzone? The public social suicide of the cheating WF team last year that was overtly supported by many people like a lynch mob?
We've SEEN this. If someone related to or frequently plays XIV told me they haven't been harassed/stalked/insulted, I'd actually be more surprised than if they have been. That's where we're at. It's prevalent everywhere, inescapable as long as people exist in those spaces. Even if people say "It's a minority of people who do that." when you're operating with a fanbase of hundreds of thousands of players, even a fraction of a percent of that number still means potentially hundreds of unhinged elements.
And it only takes one or two dedicated ones to completely crumble someone, especially without shutting down their social media. And that's assuming you take every report as absolute fact.
There I went and snagged it myself.

There's plenty of parasocial weirdos who can't control themselves and take it on to be shitheads, hell look at main character of the day what is obssed with 14 streamers
Normal people don't do it, MOST people don't do that, but if say, 200000 people see your work but 50 are obsessed with you and keep dming you, remaking when they get blocked , and keep harassing you,
It's going to feel like a whole lot, overwhelming ,
If you're a public figure it's in your best interest to not have social media at all , or lock dms and replies/@'s to selected anyways, just a handful of people are enough to really muck it all up.
You're close to being one of the weirdos
Your entire first page is about complaints about specifically about wuks eng performance, very little about problems in the narrative and thematics of the story that are weakened by the bad writing and missed potential of, example, Galool and zoralls jaja have nothing constructive to say , just wuk lamat, and just the eng version
So yes, you're another voice in the dull choir, yes, you're close to being one of the weirdos and it's probably for the best you're quarantined here
Yeah. The English performance is objectively bad and I'll make as many threads about it as necessary. Do I need to start posting about the wasted potential of Zoraal Ja or how the Skibidi pibil contest was basically rigged by her real dad? These are things I'm aware of, I just post about what I want because I only get 20 posts a day. Also I'm not quarantined here. I'm all over the Internet spreading the word of how terrible the voice acting is. (Pro-tip: A lot of people agree with me.)
If what she is claiming is true, that's of course wrong and waaay over the top.
You don't send death threats to anyone, period. It's way out of line.
That being said, I don't think the alleged fact that some weird people do this should be used as a shield to deflect any sort of criticism about her work. Which was just...not good. And that can and has to be stated without assuming the person saying it has some secret hidden agenda.
Adding to that, X or Twitter is a hellhole of weirdness, people on both sides are acting like complete idiots right now. Hell, if you even criticize the pure written character of Wuk Lamat without even going into the dubbing, you are called names and are branded as a transphobe or misogynist already. Some are even going after the other VAs and trash talk them in support of Sena. You see, it doesn't take that much for people to get super defensive and don't act better than the ones they call 'bigots' themselves.
If Sena is suffering under harassment to the degree she claimed in her post, maybe, juuuuust maybe, taking a break from this cursed website would be advised. (Which I doubt she'll do, since X is like her second home I guess)
I'm not at all excusing the behavior of the people who send messages like this or saying it's okay. Not. At. All.
But harassment of content creators or professionals is, sadly, something that comes with the job. There will always be sickos out there and on the internet not everything can be moderated. As terrible as that may be, it's sadly the truth. Our 'great', 'friendly' Community is no stranger to that, I mean just look at Zepla or JoCat. What happened there was and is not okay, either.
Maybe because her performance did make things worse?
I've played the MSQ in Japanese originally. I didn't like Wuk Lamat at all, and I was wishing she'd go away when I took off to Shaaloani yet, that was a brief respite.
And yet, in the moment Galool JaJa is murdered, I actually didn't cringe at what she was saying, and I teared up with her exchange with Galool Ja (mostly because of the boy).
Now I'm watching a friend go through the MSQ in english... and god, there were only 2 lines where I thought she delivered them in a decent way, everything else it's been hard to watch, and the moment with Galool Ja was completely ruined for me.
I am not looking forward to reaching the "Speeeeen" point.
So maybe start looking at the things people are saying rather than try to act like a highschool mean girl "shunning the weirdoes" over some hearsay.
I really dont care what a tiny minority of players do on social media, I dont care about public figures complaining about negative comments on the internet, I am not a part of your "Community" cause we play the same game, I dont know you people and you're not my friends, there is no "low" for me based on the actions of strangers.
Wuk Lamat's story is mediocre and Wuk Lamat's english voice acting is bad.
Hiring Americans is going to be such a hassle for SE... Twitter drama queens.
You're being very weird. We're talking about someone's livelihood and mental health because of harassment, and you're more hung up on spamming an opinion about a voice performance.
If you're really doing that "all over the Internet", please find a hobby and check on a therapist, because this is weird behavior. We're not talking about the quality of a game anymore, no matter how many people agree with you or not.
