Tales from Duty Finder: Some make you laugh, some make you cry. Let's vent.

Instead of complaining about others, I'll post my own duty finder issues. I have a terrible habit of eating the 365 dungeon boss canisters like they're candy. I can never get out of the way. Also, on the eden prime boss, I eat those line and circle aeos like crazy. Sometimes it's not someone else. Sometimes it's all you.

There's no difference between starting a gunbreaker at 60 or skipping a paladin to 60 with a potion. You should be expected to play as if you played for 60 levels with that job.

If you need a refresher, there's a long list of duties below level 60 you can use to practice. Perhaps even start at Brayflox and work your way up through the greatest hits if you want to show courtesy to people you play with.

If just jumping into tanking the Vault ends in failure without knowing your buttons gets you kicked or berated, that's perfectly fine. If that makes you anxious to pick up tanking, that stunning lack of courtesy on your own part (going 0-60 and expecting to learn at 60) should keep you away on its own. That's perfectly fine.

We still have a surplus of tanks, so I'm not going to think twice about replacing one that hasn't put in any effort outside of the party-- especially if they're skipping.

Me, a mildly skilled healer: "FINALLY someone who GETS ME"
The very same tank: "Lol what's a cooldown"
Me: "no not like that."
*several butt clenches later*
Tank: "Good heals"
*gets one comm*

Training dummies also exist if you want to get a basic rotation down.

Just got out of a Shishui run where the whm we had did nothing but spam Cure I, pop the occasional Asylum/Cure II and one or two Assize. They came in full shire gear with the lvl 60 white cane you buy from the npc, they left with the dungeon cane at least.

Kinda glad I asked if I should mass pull or no at the start, I probably would've given that lalafell a heart attack.

Went into low level as a BLM last night and got Haukke Manor with a newbie AST; he was wearing that Jedi Knight caster armor and highest job level he has is a 70 nin. After clearing the first room, the tank decided to pull everything down to the next locked room. The healer was still trying to adjust so we wiped as a result. Tank and the other dps then decided that playing with a new AST that can't handle mass pulls is a waste of their time and quit the dungeon before the healer could even apologize. Thankfully we got another new tank and dps and were able to finish without any issue.

Finally got BLM to 72.... and their AOE rotation is so much more awesome now lol

You know, with reading all of these in here... the one thing that has really started to stand out is just how much of a free pass the DPS's seem to get unless they do something incredibly outrageous.

Tank doesn't pull big enough, they get blasted... Healer cant heal the big pull they get blasted... These two kinds of stories pop up way way more often than the DPS's not aoe'ing or standing in the fire, or constantly failing to meet dps race requirements, you know like the dps race requirement for the big pulls to succeed? Yet for whatever reason, more often than not its the tank or healer that first gets the blame for those pulls failing. Go figure.

Part of why I'm a bit more lenient on a tank or healer failing, as their failures are painfully obvious already... its the dps that get to quietly sweep theirs under the rug and try and point fingers elsewhere.

A large part of this is SE not allowing us to use the necessary tools to gauge dps's performance and handing out bans to those trying to hold players accountable for their underperformance.

True but the only way for us to know is if you see them doing single target attacks vs AoEs and that is assuming you are familiar with each classes AoEs skill and potential. Without a parser anyway.

Part of this is because of redundancy within the party.

It's pretty normal for one DPS to do well and the other to underperform. If the healer and tank are on top of things, they can make up the DPS deficit.

AoE damage is something we all have in spades, but healing and mitigation are in comparatively short supply.

It really kinda is. Just had a funny duty finder run of Eden's Gate - Descent, myself.

First attempt: markers flying everywhere, took around five minutes to get to 60%, healer lb3 extended the engagement for some more learning, wipe.
Second attempt: simple but accurate mechanics explanation before pull, fewer markers flying everywhere but DPS dying constantly to mechanics, tank deaths as healers (myself included) try to juggle and fail, almost bailed out by healer lb3 at like 24% but other healer has bad luck and I was stunlocked in the bad.
Third attempt: DPS still panic when they get markers and ignore the timer that actually tells them when it goes off, DPS dying to mechanics, after something like ten minutes of chain-rezzing its the healers turn to fail mechanics and we wipe.

I have this nagging sensation in the back of my head that not a single DPS broke 5.5k, and some were below 3. Tanks seemed to be doing their jobs minus one or two avoidable deaths, healers were mediocre but could keep up under normal load.

All I could do was smile sadly. My only regret was that someone else beat me to the abandon and ate the thirty; I wasn't going to re-queue after that slog.

Generally, you can tell if DPS aren't AOEing due to the rate at which a trash pack dies. If you have a larger pull like one of the first two in Holminster that take several minutes to die, it's fairly safe to assume the DPS aren't AOEing and are single-targeting.

Some people are going to be toxic with or without parses when you fail mechanics. Parses are just a tool. Some people use that tool to improve themselves, other people use that tool to make themselves look like a tool.

It is however an answer to people who choose to do the bare minimum of effort, counting on others to carry them. Mechanics failures are obvious. It would help a lot to have a scoreboard shown at the end of a dungeon or trial, when completed or abandoned, so that everyone understands more of what was going on.

Just got out of a Void Ark run where all three tanks failed to pick up Sawtooth during the second boss fight, so I ended up playing MCH!Tank for pretty much all of it. And I lasted most of the fight too, until our healers got distracted.

People who want to improve their performance have tools for that purpose. Every expansion has a training field for you to test rotations against. I've never said people shouldn't have parsers, but I do totally agree that if they use them to berate other players instead of for their own improvement they deserve to be banned.

Has anyone noticed an issue with the Join Party in Progress with the Eden raids? I just dropped from Eden 4 because our healer had DC'd, so I was going to try and re-queue as the replacement for the group. I dropped, changed to WHM and re-queued within about 10 seconds, but I got 2 fresh groups in my queue :( Didn't try a 3rd time as I didn't want to get locked out.

While I was initially waiting for the first group on my DNC, it had to reform 3 times - twice because of the healers, the first time I didn't catch it. So I wonder if they were also fishing for their In-Progress run and couldn't get it.

It is possible that someone managed to sneak in during those ~10 seconds I was gone, but who knows.

Met a RDM in Dohn Mheg who only spammed Jolt II > Verthunder/Veraero even for more than 4 mobs, never cast Verfire/Verstone even when they're available and not touching any of their OGCD (no Manafication, no Embolden, no Acceleration, no Lucid). At least they did melee combo on bosses but when a healer can outdps you throughout the entire dungeon something's clearly wrong. Felt sorry for the nice DRG that kept tethering him for Eye.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe if a fresh party has been waiting for a healer for significantly longer than an in-progress party that also needs a healer the DF algorithm will match you with the fresh party.

basicly if you need a 3rd party program to improve your dps..... either you forgot to examine your team mate before comparing yourself, you fail at rotation//class mechanic or you're missing alot of stats or maybe all 3.

I'm saying if you don't feel like you have anything to offer the others in your party, then don't waste their time. To do otherwise is inconsiderate.

If you need some self-confidence, or feel like you'd impose on other people due to your lack of capacity to read tooltips, then perhaps a party with people you already know would be best.

Perhaps rather than trying to queue for a dungeon you don't feel like you can handle, or are anxious about, you can queue for a lower dungeon you *can* handle. Start from Sastasha if you must.

As for who gets kicked, that's up to the party to decide. Usually the weakest link is pretty clear.

Oh that would make sense! I had always just assumed parties missing members got first pick, although now that I think about it, that could be exploited easily. :X

Now adding a new story. Tanking again gunbreaker, my healer Astrologian is still in full regular shire! Doma Castle. Another one, same thing actually better geared than the first. I was in a good mood did big pulls partly anyway with an overuse of dcd and we cleared it fine. Gave the healer a commendation.

I actively complain about dps not doing any aoe, don't worry there. I call them out too, post about them all the time. Thing about DPS is they won't aoe even if you tell them to aoe, they are literally allergic to it. Like if they used any they might need to actually go to the hospital. You can easily tell when they aren't if they don't have any threat on any but one of the mobs.

Dps most definitely, that is a player actively refusing to use their kit, this has nothing to do with skill. Just press 3 buttons and you can aoe! That should never be tolerated, a healer is different. Rather the DPS should be kicked. I don't think a healer should be kicked for not doing damage.

Exactly. you don't even need a parser to gauge a dps. Very easy to tell if they aren't doing aoe or underperforming on a boss pull, you can actually use threat as a basis now. On top of the amount of time it takes to do either of these, for example Malikah's Well last boss, it should be dead before a third crystal nail if your dps is good. I personally don't call out players for low dps though, I specifically call them out on the occasion that they are making the group take centuries to kill trash mobs because they refuse to do aoe.

multiple people have posted questions about preventive measures for too low gear in leveling dungeons for the live letter, hopefully one gets picked and we could hear a response to this issue.

A dps aoe combo is about 3 skills. 3 buttons. It should be common knowledge to wear gear that is applicable to the dungeon you are queuing up for. This literally shouldn't take a rocket scientist here.

How about learners make a practice party? If we wanna go that route.

How about that? I am not saying it is acceptable to show up in a dungeon without the proper gear or simply stand there and do nothing, but if people are trying and at least asking or revealing upfront they are still learning...give them a break.

I consider a serious offense something like falling asleep during a dungeon..guess what? *raises hand* I fell asleep during MSQ roulette last night during the Omega boss fight. Luckily I didn't get kicked but it would have totally been deserved. There are times you deserve it and others you don't. However, some of you people are really ridiculous in terms of your expectations.

I activate my trap card: mirrored argument. This card allows me to flip your argument right back to you because it basically goes both ways.

Summoner AoE :

1. Place Tri-disaster on main target
2. Spread to other targets
3. Get your Aether stacks
4. Cast Pet ability for AoE
5. Cast AoE spell
6. Cast AoE Aether spell
7. repeat 4-6
8. Enter trance
9. Repeat 1-7

Last night broke 30k dps on that, but sure as hell is more than 3 buttons :D

I obviously missed the part about people in 71+ dungeons with i130 gear, which I agree is ridiculous.

Ate a 30 on my baby alt got stuck in a Labyrinth Run with an entire party of Ahats that were being overall rude and obnoxious to the rest of the alliance both in chat and in behavior and continued to jerk people around on the Atomos part by constantly running on and off the rear pad I should have noped out when the response to hello that the tank gave was ???? off but I figured they were just having a bad day.it got worse from there, but after watching the Atomos stuff I was like.. screw these jerks I dont even want to heal them. and left

I believe there's been a slight misunderstanding here. I was referring to how he was suggesting that the DPS being bad and not using AoEs was not an excuse for the tank to compensate and make smaller pulls. I do agree with you that the DPS is at fault here, absolutely, such was my point. Allow me to link the exact list to you:

He replied to this list as saying that none of these points being an excuse for groups to put up with a single pulling tank in Bardham's Mettle, and people are fully in the right to kick said tank despite any of these reasons if they wanted to. Which is an absolute load of bull and an entirely elitist attitude if you ask me. He's basically suggesting that tanks should only ever queue for Bardham's if they're experienced, confident and overgeared, and anyone else should just go make a premade group of people willing to put up with them. Not a cool attitude to have at all. There's bad tanks, yeah, but then there's also having patience for people who are appropriately geared (Bardham hurts a lot with level appropriate gear) and / or may be still relatively new to tanking, particularly in the case of boosted tanks or Gunbreakers in general.

Or none of the three. For some that use tools like that, its about checking their own consistency. Its great and all to practice on a training dummy that does nothing to get your button order down, but that only goes so far. It could be trying to find small optimizations for specific fights. All of which take both an existing high level of play and class knowledge plus some raw data in the form of raw numbers and video playback.

@SturmChurro I know you blast all jobs equally. I know I have met plenty of bad dps along the way. It truly is amazing how many don't know when to single target or aoe, and I think its from questing bad habits plus people speed clearing dungeons like copperbell. Great dungeon for teaching target priority. Personally when i played drg as soon as there were 4 mobs I swapped to aoe, unless there was a priority one that could single handedly wipe the group. But then again I had done the potency math at the time to know thats where it rolled over for best dps.

Back to crazy dungeon stories, how many of you knew Aenc Thon could transform more than once if your groups dps was really low? I know I was flabbergasted on the run I saw him do it a 2nd time, and that was with me broiling and bioing everytime I could afford to.

Been a bit but I have an actual success story.

My casual group finally took down Titania after two runs a couple days ago. Ended up getting two more clears before people had to leave. It's crazy to see progress from just barely making the cut at 0.01% to having enough for a LB3 and then a LB 2 for Titania alone 30 seconds before enrage.

Going to start working on Innocence tonight which should be fun so I'm excited to see how it will go.

The big issue Van brings up and I totally agree is past lvl 60 content there is an expectation to be had. The goal of a dungeon run is to make it efficient as possible, which in most cases are big pulls, tanks managing aggro/cds,aoes, Healers watching their health while also aoeing (if going smoothly), and DPS aoeing/using their toolkit until two mobs are left before switching to singles. The sooner you get through the mobs the better but everyone needs to be on point to do this. A tank shouldn't have to work twice as hard to save themselves in a dungeon like Sirensong while the healer is just simply casting cure. Likewise a healer shouldn't have to work twice as hard to heal a tank if they can't manage their cooldowns/do only single target combos.

Big rule I've kept to heart is you can never unlearn things, only improve. If you still need to work on your job just queue into some lower level dungeons to practice, work on a training dummy, or just ask for help. Would never get upset over someone wanting to learn to play their job prior of the expected range. But if you queue into leveling and are placed in Bardam's for example you are expected to know how to play your job and will need to bring your game face.

Also for the love of god to anyone reading this, please read your tooltips. If I have another tank tanking for me surprised that Arm's Length causes slow I'm going to jump out of a window.

I can't actualy imagine someone who refuses to use AoE combo in the 5.0... So dumb and YET - they are exist.

Had a lvl 80 dungeon today which i did for the first time as a tank with 3 people that had a mentor sign next to their nick.
I sucessfuly dodged most of the aoes at the boss phases, i did wall to wall pulls with good cd rotations and dodging. Mentors died like 8 times total when at bosses and because of that i did almost highest dps on gnb.
Got 3 commendations after, it was one of those runs which you feel great after :p

As I mentioned a week or two back, I did encounter a tank in the 75 dungeon wearing Ironworks gear. Healer ate the penalty and both of us on DPS followed. Wasn't even worth asking.

< Still haunted by the ARR base starting sam gear samurai i had in the aery a few months back. I absolutely never want to see a tank that paper in ShB content. I will eat that penalty so fast...
