Why not abolish the Class system entirely in favor of Jobs? [@ Devs]

They should instead rename archer to something bardish, make a new weapon type for that, change the artemis bow to artemis harp or something, then make a new archer that will turn into ranger.

Bards are an offshoot of the rogue archetype. An archetype that is known for the use of swords, daggers and bows.

Considering Thancred calls himself a bard by trade and is not obvious about it, the fact you have characters like Leliana from Dragon Age and the Axe-Lute guy from Skyrim, you seem to have a very limited perception of what can be called a bard. Again, the Edwardian Bard is not the epitome of Bard-dom. And it is good that SE decided to draw from something other than FFIV or Tactics for this version of the bard.

But people don't want FFXIV copying any concept from any other game but the Final fantasy series, therefore it must be a plain harp.

I must admit, I felt some sort of childish satisfaction using your quote for my own needs. It didn't sound any less silly when I said it however, it probably sounded worse...

You really should give it up. People share differing opinions. Get used to it. If you are unable respond without twisting their words or attacking them, mentally demonize them and enjoy your day.

Anyway, everything you proceeded to suggest had already been suggested by others before. We've long since accepted that classes are here to stay. People still feel the way they feel and should be allowed to state why. The handful of people who've been posting here pretty much all agree that an overhaul is needed and we are awaiting more information. For now, we're sharing our thoughts on the topic.

2 jobs per class wont work currently with the information we have. 1:1 seems like the best fit for the time being unless various weapon types alter abilities and traits. Since MMO's battle system is important this topic excites me :) as well as others.

Well from the videos they have shown us this far, we are seeing some additions of abilities. For example, Conjurer can now cast Water spell and Dragoon has some new flip attack thing. I wonder if they gave classes and jobs more abilities overall, or swapped obsolete ones for new ones.

If the former is true, perhaps we'll see more job specific abilities to better distinguish a class and a job. Perhaps we can get some insight during alpha / beta to better determine the direction the classes and jobs will go.

Bards are musicians that play music to boost morale - just like a computer programmer can make programs. Because I can also ride a bike and shoot a bow doesn't mean that is what a computer programmer is. (Actually the meaning of bard is just someone who can recite poetry but you know w.e)

You seem to have a disconnect between titles and other activities.

I know what a bard is. Bard in FFXIV is an archer who can sing. Not a singer who can shoot. The emphasis is key. I'm not saying a bard -cant- use bows. But the focus of the FFXIV bard is archery and not actually being a bard.

^ I agree with this.

I do know that Square has confirmed that Bards in 2.0 will use instruments now when they play their songs. Whether this is enough to make it feel like Bard is another story.

Harp, lute, their voice & flute. These are the weapons a FinalFantasy bard should have and either a sword, bow or crossbow as a sub weapon.

Music abilities can also do damage they don't only have to be buffs or debuffs.

Harms lutes flutes and voice can also be ranged weapons that use the power of song to attack, like they normally do in the final fantasy series, so they could just have instruments and have a cool musical auto attack, musical weapon skills, and continuation of musical buffs. The current skillset does not match bard at all, it is a ridiculous attempt at mixing ranger with bard, but just calling it bard.

This is why bard needs its own weaponset, instruments, and own skillset to go along with instruments, not bows and bowskills. they dont fit.
