First time in phase 5 of titan HM, tryied to avoid bomb and went down platform:) Then I learned the lesson "eat one bomb and shut up in phase 5" XD
First CT run, no one explained to me that you have to run behind the meteor.
Someone in Alliance chat said, "Captain NOOOOOO!" when I saw that, my tunnel vision lifted and I realized that I was definitely not where I was suppose to be. I turned around, just in time to see everyone behind the meteor and to die the most horrific and embarassing death possible, about 12 inches from the explosion.
Fortunately, everyone in the raid knew it was my first run and were forgiving. It was pretty embarassing though, to say the least.
Oh, another one would have been my first run at Demon Wall. We had it down to about 10% health and the bees both popp'ed AoE on me. I spent half a second popping Hallowed Ground (I was down to about 20-25% health) and forgot to move to the middle of the wall and avoid the Repel. The rest of the group knocked off the last 10% and we won, but, again, kind of embarassing.... that's a LONG fall.
First runs are always... interesting. :D
Doing an EX titan with my FC, I'm the OT for the first phase, everythings going smooth, the I accedently provoke the instant before mountain buster goes off. Wiped my entire FC and was so embarreses that I said nothing untill the next day.
Also went to do a garuda EX last week. The brd I always clear EX's with is use to being able to go all out when I MT. In short, forgot shield oath, he ripped agro within seconds and garuda went on a murder spree attempt, managed to salvage it up untill the third sister phase in wich one of our dps obliterated the spiny thinking it was a satin.
Another post. I was being cocky.
After hitting 10,200+ HP with Thrill of Battle and food I started running out in the open taking fulll 9,999 hits to the face and living in CT. What was that, Giants come out on atomos? Pfft you will need more than 1 hit to kill me boy! What is that Behemoth doing meteor? Hide behind what comet? Second wind and double Inner beast No problem! Oh is that an astral flare you got there? That's nice! It even leaves a dot on the floor very interesting. Then trying it again the next run and realizing that the only reason I was living was because I had food and that the WHM always had regen on me to save me from Dots. Tried it again and my HP was barely 10,040, first dot killed me after meteor and same with astral flare, took me a while to realize why my HP plumeted by 160+ points because my food ran out.
Was tanking, forgot what when I accidentally hit the power button on my surge protector with my feet. Since then moved the surge protector for my PC to the side where i can't accidentally kick it.
Haukke Manor (hm). First time in and after the update. Thought the purple AoE was something new for the BRDs....
Sorry healer! :(
The Howling Eye (Extreme) has begun.
(Moon Shadow) any scrubs here?
This is the garbage type of attitude that makes me want to quit DF groups instantly .
Tanking iron giants on king bemoth. Dps was slow and meteor started to go with the giant still at half health. So i run to the one and only comet to hide and the giant follows and 1 shots the comet and we wipe. Oops lol
Tanked the entirety of Ifrit extreme in Sword Oath. Died once to five stack breath, then again at the end.
Nobody noticed (Including me) until after we killed it.
I was not sure if I should post this as a new thread/in the DPS area, or on this.
I decided to get with this one thread.
I've been looking at the DPS threads to check out what it is like, rotations of and general pros and cons of the melee DPS roles to see if there is one that I could pick up, aside from my slowly-being-leveling BLM.
So my apology to all the melee DPS out there for which I tanked and kept the target moving around unnecessarily. I had no idea that more than half of the effective DPS damage was depending on your position with the mob or boss. And some including standing still (apparently). I truly thought it was more convenience and avoiding hits that you were either at the flank or rear of the mobs or boss.
It wasn't a face-palm moment for me - it was a head/forehead drop to the table with a thud moment.
Good thing I know this now for the future! Also really good to know now, about line AoE from melee. Didn't even know this existed. So I should also be able to help get that in order.
*sits in corner with visor down*
/sigh
Tanking is my herp in general. I'm pretty new in this game and new to tanking in general. normally I play lncr but I keep marauder leveled pretty close. I just got out of a terrible run of hatali first time tanking that. I know I'm low level and nowhere near you guys running coil in il90. I just had a really hard time holding aggro and controlling the mobs. I dont know if I should keep tanking after this. I wanted to tank because tanks are really needed but this was so bad. I died twice to bomb self destruct cause I couldn't get out of mob range. I just did everything wrong. Uhg Should I even bother trying to tank before war? Seems like I just don't have all the tools yet. Or am I just bad and should give up on tanking all together. I would start my own thread but I cant not yet anyways... not high enough or something.
Keep at it! Gambatte!
Circular AOEs can be a pain. The general recommendation is to use Legacy movement. All your movement is relative to the camera, regardless of which way the character is facing. It means no more back-pedaling out of AOEs. It also means the camera never auto-turns, so it takes some getting used to.
If that doesn't work, blame lag :p
Pick up a few levels of gladiator for flash. It will supplement Overpower, which is the main way you hold aggro now. Flash also uses mp instead of tp
Also, you can post in the New Player section all you want. Here are the general limits - forum link. There are several "New to tanking - apparently I suck" posts.
Got two for you guys.
First is in my first Haukke Manor (Hard). Got a PUG and didn't look at start beforehand, but was still doing ok. We get to last boss and we wipe. Wasn't so bad, so we were all up for a retry... Except I had all my accessories at 0% Durability after that wipe. Everyone got really nervous when I pointed it out, but we managed and beat it.
Second, was MT for Titan HM. We had trouble and were on our 4+ try. I had a small lapse in my focus after Titan jumped. I was right on edge of the red circle and didn't fell, but I tried to position myself better and walked of the edge by going in reverse. I was with a friend that time and not a word was said in the ten seconds following that event. I can only imagine the scene (from his point of view) of the Darklight-clad paladin getting ready to slash Titan, only to back away and fall to his doom.
Just so you know, early tanking as a mrd is literally "get everything in a cone in front of me, and spam overpower until my key i have it set to breaks". GLA before 26 or so is a pain as well, you lack your big emnity production. Leveling a DPS and a tank is actually a very good idea, because it makes you a better DPS overall, because you will understand how much emnity each hit produces, and be able to know your limits before you will swipe it from the tank.
I am a nub tank but the best herp-derp moment was on an Ifrit where I was DPSing as a Dragoon and the tank was either having latency issues or well was herp-derping as well and I ended up tanking Ifrit for half the fight until he died. Go go storymode Ifrit.
Thanks you guys Ill give it another shot when
Forgets to turn on Shield Oath and wonders why I lose aggro so easily.
Last day turn 5 attempts before the reset. About 15 attempts in, OT grabs adds, I pull twintania like usual. We get almost to dive bombs then my OT asks if I had shield oath up. Turns out I had no oath up, yet somehow held hate and lived through every death sentence, then we proceeded to fail miserably to dive bombs. Eventually beat it though roughly 2-3 attempts later.
The first or second time I tanked Brayflox while leveling PLD I pulled the group of mobs before the bubble boss, I didn't realize that one of the pugil patrols aggroed our healer. I saw the healer's HP drop and I went into full on WHM mode (my main job) spamming cure. I lost hate and it was a facepalm/headdesk moment for me. 3 of us died and the BLM with us managed to escape I think (somehow, I think he or she was focusing on the pugil and killed it without touching the mobs I pulled).
It was my first time tanking for a party was last night and I did exactly what Kenka said in Copperbell mines. I figured "I'm a strong tank now. I can let this bomb explode and still survive."
Wrong....
Dead wrong.
Really embarrassing :)
I'm tanking the giants in CT, on the third giant in my war. At around half his HP I notice behemoth starting to use his signature move, whatever it's called, so I automatically turn and head towards a comet to hide, it was instinctive since I had done CT many times, only half way towards the only comet left standing I realize that I had a mean looking giant I was supposed to be tanking, only I was a little too late since I had just took the giant to a mass of terrified dps/healers with distorted look on their faces looking at me, and the giant behind me who was starting to cast his frontal cleave attack, resulting in a 90% wipe. Myself obviously and deservedly included. I watched from the dirt as the rest of the remaining alliance barely managed to down behemoth, as well as the usual not too friendly comments so typical of a CT run. I figure I deserved it since I probably should have just kept the giant away and died with him, lol..
For my own CT story, it was my second run in, the first Valefors. The first run I did was just a giant Cluster bomb for me at that point on my screen (good run, just me needing to learn things). I had done Amdapor before and shoulda realized that Valefors had a back cone...but I didn't. Not sure if anyone got wiped from it but luckily someone who knew what they were doing got it off me before I took down to many.
Also, yes, I took a Self-Destruct to the face in Cutter's Cry. Learned my lesson that day.
Constantly deactivating Defiance in the heat of battle as WAR, and losing a built up Wrath I was just about to use to let rip with Steel Cyclone. I ended up having to move the ability on my hotbar it got so bad.
CT last night. First trash. We were killing all the elementals when someone wandered a little too close to the Valefor, and it walked right up to where everyone was. So I grabbed it and quickly turned its tail away from the raid. Meant to drag it away after a combo or two just to make sure I wouldn't lose its attention halfway. But I didn't even notice the poison had come up, so "a combo or two" was just long enough to kill me.
During my first time tanking King Behemoth, our first wipe wasn't a derp on my part, but one of my healers died because the OT couldn't hold aggro on the Iron Giant for some reason. Needless to say, I soon die because nobody else is healing me. The other tanks chime in that I'm 'undergeared' as an i79 WAR, but the OT took responsibility and everyone got over it.
Second time around was entirely my own derp. When King Behemoth readied his second meteor spell, and I saw the meteor explode and rushed forward to keep him in position. Unfortunately I failed to notice that, while the visual effect had happened, the comets hadn't registered the damage yet, and so I killed myself by running headlong in the blast. I explain my mistake, and get chewed out by the other tanks (although I liked this other team's healer who basically said, "Four tanks doing nothing and none of you thought to grab KB lol").
Just remembered this one from early on:
Newer tank and still to dungeon runs. Speed runs I not only had no real clue but kind of under geared. Start WP. Ask if we should try for a couple mobs or the whole thing. Someone said do the whole pull; don't stop. (Keep in mind...I was NEW and "pull" didn't mean much to me).
So, I grabbed the first set of mobs and second. Guy said, keep going, do the whole pull. I didn't know exactly what he meant, so did the "whole pull". Everything. To the first boss. After coming back alive, the BRD was frustrated and didn't want to wait so started off without the healer so went with him and again wipe. Sigh.
Totally had no clue.
First time I run Brayflox and keep eating last boss frontal attack. LNC is shouting that I should run left and right all the time to avoid it, but I still eat it and die. LNC takes over as tank...and avoids all frontal cone attacks. Rest of party takes out boss while I lie dead. Felt very ashamed.
Running Cutters and final boss isn't going well. Both DPS are down and the WHM is OOM from trying to save them. Boss is on about 5% life. WHM shouts that I should LB and kill the boss myself. I realize that I haven't even put it in my toolbar...
Running Stone Vigil and I have no idea why I'm having trouble holding agro.
WHM politely asks me 'So, what do you prefer, shield oath or sword oath?'
Realise that I haven't got either one up...
After about two weeks straight of throwing my face at Titan EX, I finally get a group together that consistently makes it past the add phase. We work at it for a couple hours, a few people say they have to leave, so we get one more try.
Titan is down to about 5-10% HP, MT goes down to a Mountain Buster. I pop Tempered Will, I tap L1 to switch to Titan to Provoke him. Instead of provoking him, I run head first right off the edge. I had let go of the damn trigger too early, so L1 just starts autorun.
I've been trying to get my first Garuda Extreme win for a week or so now and last night, I join a PF group and it's going great. I'm OT (On Chirada) and we have Garuda down to maybe 20%. The (likely) final twister phase starts and the Spiney goes to the MT. Not wanting him to have to eat 2 DWW, I grab Chirada, run to my corner and then try to provoke the spiney (in hopes that provoke would be available again so I could grab Suparna after Chirada dies). Well, while I was provoking the spiney, I lost Chirada to the bard and chaos ensued. We wipe and everyone is yelling at me. I apologize and we try again... only this time, the Satin (which I was attacking as off tank) plume in the first wave of plumes explodes and puts everyone to sleep. That oddity on top of me already being flustered from the previously screw up, I forget to switch to Shield Oath (I was in sword to help kill the plumes) as the sisters spawn. That same bard pulls hate and we wipe again. I apologize.. again, but it's really too late. We tried one more time and we wiped again (luckily, this one wasn't me...). Everyone leaves and I'm sure a lot of that PF group now hates me...
On a more happy note, I got a group of FC members up after that and I OTed my way to my first GX win. So, the day wasn't a total loss.
Used to doing BRD for FC BC statics, but needed a replacement tank this week.. Go in, everythings going beautiful, reach Cad really quickly. First attempt goes half decent, split early, had a stack on split, wiped. Second attempt I'm fully buffed, preparing for pull, pop old LB bar since its gonna vanish anyways, run toward Cad, throw a tomahawk, all the sudden my eyes glance up onto my buff bar.. And Defiance is missing from it. Before I could utter the words "OH FU-!" He was making a beeline for Eos, who decided to heal really early. One Hoody later, both healers, 2 ranged DPS, and an OT were all on the floor.A conclusion was reached within 20 minutes of entering BC, and it was something that I couldn't argue with.. "Tama is never allowed to tank on a workday again."
The other day I was using my WAR to tank some stupid treasure maps for a few people in my FC. After confidently chattering in vent that I could easily hold enmity over our i88 BLM as a i79 WAR, the first set of mobs spawn and turn out to be the set of 8 ghosts. Confidently, I swagger over to the set of mobs, not realizing that I had my second hot-bar queued up instead of my first, the intended chain of attacks was to be:
Overpower > Infuriate > Steel Cyclone > Berserk > Overpower > Vengeance > Overpower > Bloodbath
Instead, I stumble up to the mobs and do the following, while simultaneous saying "Watch this!" In vent:
Brutal Swing > Holmgang > Sprint > Nothing > Nothing > Foresight
... FAIL
Ifrit EX, last set of nails. I'm working on hitting a nail down a bit, see the MT is at 2 stacks, I run back over and we get prepped to swap.....and then I provoke the nail under Ifrit...DERP!
Crystal Tower. Spending most of the trash pulls DPSing, we get to Thanatos. I'm in Alliance B. After we get the buff, I run in to taunt Thanatos off of A's tank. After taking a few hits, the healer (one of my guild mates) in mumble wonders why my HP is so low.
It is then I realize... I never put Defiance back on.
