agreed it's kinda hard to review anything with a quick glance. you would think that actual review sites would have a group of people that played the game for a decent amount of time before making reviews on something. it's like if movie critics watched a preview and then wrote about the entire movie.

I understand time is limited to punch out a review, but the mere fact of not telling people how long you played a MMO review is tantamount of reviewing a retail game and saying.

"I never actually played the game all the way through. Hell I can't remember if I got past the title screen it's all a little hazy."

LOL It had some roman numbers or something on the title screen then I made a cat person. Here's why I hate it.

It's not like anyone is even debating the score, hell the game probably deserves a lower score considering how scathing her review is.

But the timing is so horrendous it's sparked ALL CAPS RAGE within some people, myself included.

@#$^% probably doesn't even know whats in the patch either.

Patch 1.18 wouldn't have made a difference.

The MMO community at large isn't exactly a fan of auto-attack anyway, so it might have only meant an even worse review.

oh i do agree the timing was horrid. i will not take up for that. the only thing i look at the timing on that review was they hated the game and wanted to get in a few extra kicks before the update came out. it was an obvious way to hit back as se and say look at 10 months after release this and this is wrong and briefly mention that in a few days that is changing. to me that person felt it was their last chance to really hit the game with a bad review.

it may be after the update there may be people that hit the game alot harder with them, but i think this one in particular hated the game so much they didn't want to take a chance the game was drastically changed for the better after.

if the update drastically makes me enjoy the game better i will be right along everyone else attacking it as it is incorrect, but right now i guess i am in a wait and see mode. i voiced my concerns i have had when things were stated about how i was worried they would be implemented. all i can do now is wait and see and hope the people that voiced concerns were heard and if any changes needed to be made with the way the new stuff was implemented it headed off troubles before people visit the game again after waiting for so long.

The problem isn't that those arguments aren't legit, some are, some are somewhat footed in reality but extremely overdramatized and tainted by hyperbole (which is a big problem in itself). The problem is that the review is extremely lacking in adressing the game's positive points, and that the patch can easily introduce some relevant new ones.

The patch may or may not improve the game, no one knows. What *everyone* knows is that the patch will include some very sizeable changes and addition that will make the game objectively different. Which means that for better or for worse that review will be irrelevant and potentially misleading in four days.

The score is no matter, what matters are the contents, and that review describes a game that won't be fitting that description in four days (mind you, it doesn't really fit that description even now due to the lackluster adress of positive points and the widespread use of hyperbole on the negatives, but the difference will be even bigger in four days).

oh i agree. they should have pointed out what has been improved. that is a given.

that's why i just stated that they should have people actually play a game and not kill a few mobs and think they know the game. if i gave a review although most wouldn't agree with it on here i could go from the day after release until now. i didn't make it into closed beta regretfully. it also took one day for my bank to get the info from click and buy to be able to sign in which is why it was day after. they pointed out everything they seen as a flaw still, but because they had not been playing the game they could not tell you anything that has improved.

this is why i stated the thing about movie critics writing reviews after just seeing the previews. if they haven't actually seen the movie they would not have a clue about how it was as a whole, but just how it was shown to them in that brief time frame.

10 months IS fair enough. Also, EVERY single patch so far has been the same thing with the community. "It's the patch that's going to fix the game!!!" And then it's an epic failure. "They're adding quests!!!!" "Wow, great, a few quests that serve no real purpose and haven't changed the game."

Repeat for just about everything in every patch.

That's exactly why I'm saying that this review is a prefect example of poor journalism. Add to it the horrible timing and you end up with a trainwreck of epic proportions.

One of the main advantages of the internet is that it gives a voice to everyone. One of the main disadvantages is that it opened certain jobs that before required a specific education (that includes education on integrity and professionalism) to people that simply should do something else in their life.

I'd be surprised if she even knew there is a patch in a few days, honestly... considering confirmed and coming changes are "rumors".

ya know, honestly, that review gives me more hope in this patch than i had. it's kinda strange reasoning so bare with me and see if you catch what i mean.

believe me i had very low expectations on it to be completely honest. this was an obvious hate fest on the game and it was rushed out. it's not a suprise that it was right before this major update. this seemed to me to be that last kick someone could get in before they felt they were going to be kicked back. that made me feel that they actually have worries that the update may take the game, that they hate, in the right direction and it would be their last opportunity to knock it down.

it makes me wonder if it is legitimate fear or just wanting to get the shot in just in case, but it made me feel the update will be better accepted than i was afraid of by talking to my ls and other friends. very few of them expect alot of improvements, but it makes it seem as though this person is afraid they will be great for the game.

that's why i say it makes me bring my hopes up on this update as this hate piece just so happened to come in the same week as the first of 3 major patches that we all hope will make the game start moving towards a success.

i personally believe they not only knew when the changes were coming, but they neglected to mention them in hopes of turning more people away. i believe they quoted "rumors" to make people believe that the changes may not be coming in an attempt to cause farther downfall.

Oh so its ok to create magical review dates that conveniently make a game look bad even tho it wont even be the same game that is reviewed? That must be what they planned. Wait some odd days before major patch and revive old hatreds towards to game in an obvious attempt to keep new and old players away. Hate SE much?

Exactly, I hope it didn't come across like I was somehow defending the terrible review. I was more pointing out that if confirmed and well known coming changes are rumors to her, what isn't possible.

Oh some people are definitely afraid to see this game improve. They spent so much energy and words hating on it, that seeing it taking a steer towards success would probably have a disastrous effect on their warped ego.

How is it not going to be the same game being reviewed? MMOs change. Any MMO player reading a review on an MMO will realize this. The author probably stated "rumors" in reference to how everyone thinks every patch is the miracle patch. They mention the introduction of quests, the community claims content has arrived, patch installs, community is unhappy.

People at this point in time are pessimistic. SE has to prove themselves before people start reading too much into the promises. That's perfectly fair with their track record, and the very fact that tons of people in this thread have stated that the review was fair should be a big red flag for some of you.

Did it come at a bad time? Yes. However, if this patch hadn't been delayed twice, then this review wouldn't have come at such a bad time.

Don't kid yourselves into thinking that this review is what's going to hurt the game. The game is already hurting and you should be glad that they've said they will re-review it later this year AFTER the patches and that it got a higher score than quite a few previous reviews.

Edit: Also, it's kind of hard to say the author hates SE if you actually read the article.

Honestly the hope is that this particular writer won't be allowed to taint the name of journalist anymore. Considering that they didn't review the game at launch, reviewing it four days before a major patch promising another review later simply doesn't make the slightest sense. Just wait for relevant changes to be made and then post a review. They already missed the train to review the game in it's launch state.

Reviews like this increase the amount of pessimistic thought processes. The reason, and main reason, why this review is crap is because it failed to mention anything Yoshida and crew said is coming in the 1.18 patch in 4 days. No one is kidding themselves by thinking the review will hurt the game. anyone that doesnt keep up with these forums and reads that crap review will get an automatic negative image on the game, ESPECIALLY since she calls the changes coming in 4 days as 'rumors'. She intentionally wrote that first paragraph to aid in deterring newcomers, the rest is just old crap. who wants to start playing based on rumors? The author may not hate SE, but defiantly hates this game.

Exactly. She only mentions they did the graphics right, everything else stinks. She hasn't played the game enough to give a proper review on it. Didnt you notice the RANK1 PUGILIST with STARTER GEAR in her pictures.

Most of what she said is a gross hyperbole. Hyberbole is a misrepresentation of reality.
She missed most of the positive aspects of the games. Presenting the negatives but not the positives when reviewing a game is a misrepresentation of reality.

I can care less about the review say i can care less if this become the next big thing in MMO history. I really don't care if FFXIV win WoW or not i just want to play a game that is not wow-clone. Everything yoshi-p talk he sound like he making this into a wow-clone then i saw the dungeon video and it does not remind me anything like wow. I hope jumping and now swimming wont remind me like wow too -.-

True, Guildleves aren't quests. Guildleves wish they were quests. The truth is, they were the only form of content, for the most part, that the game released with. So you can forgive people for thinking of them as quests. In fact, I'm sure SE themselves have called guildleves a questing system at some point. Just because players abuse them as a quick form of levelling doesnt mean they aren't quests.

For all we know the changes coming in patch 1.18 could turn out to be totally non-functional. I'm certainly not holding my breath.

People who aren't die-hard fans aren't going to nitpick her every word like you are anyway. They are just going to glance over the article and take in the general gist of what it's saying. And generally speaking you can't fault the article.

They're not? What are they then? Just because there are different types of quests does not change the facts that leves are indeed quests.

This is the only issue I have a problem with in that review. Not her use of the word rumor in another place, but strictly for the auto-attack implementation. Using "rumor" to address the "overhauls" actually can be justified since it depends entirely on how drastic these changes actually are. It could be another example of SE hyping something and then it's a massive let down, just like when Yoshi announced quests being added and people acted as if the game was going to be changed drastically. Obviously it would not be in the literal sense of the word, but how the phrase is often used.

Who cares at this point. Theres like 30 thousand of us still playing. The game is in the bargan bin for 15 buck. Its not like this review is really gonna tear down the image the average MMo player has of this game and the 30k of us still playing arent gonna quit because of the review either. Seems like a bunch of people getting worked up over something that doesnt even matter.

Clearly reviews are made for people that haven't played the game or else they would be pointless, like most of you are seeing it in this thread. If we look at it from a new player point of view that's not a final fantasy fan they would agree with everything the review said. And for those of you that are saying she only played to level 10 can you honestly say you haven't seen everything the game has to offer by then?

Why is it, that in nearly every single post, you bring up WoW? This only makes you look ignorant along with making you look like a biased fanboy. Nobody is even talking about WoW, and it doesn't even -sound- like Yoshi-P is making it into a WoW clone. Despite your lack of MMO experience, WoW didn't create those features.

Lol. Generally speaking there are tens of ways you can fault that article. Extensive use of hyperbole, choice of pictures that indicate that she played a couple hours top, misrepresentation of reality, a lot of positive aspects of the game missed, the functionality of the UI bunched up with the aesthetics of the game and used as an excuse to lower the graphics score (LOL!). This review is a trainwreck, but it's not surprising that some rabid haters defend it.

They'd bend over twice to defend anything that says something negative about this game, no matter what it is.

"Nitpicking" would indicate an active effort to find some at least partly hidden small details. The enormous flaws of this article are so blatantly evident that skimming through it once is enough to evidentiate what example of poor journalism it is.

LOL: Reviews are made for everyone, especially long after the release of a game. They're for the new player, they are for the veteran, they are for the dood that left the game and is on the fence if to come back or not. Any kind of article is made for everyone that spends his time to read it.

if you play only to level 10 (and it's doubtful that she even got there), there's a ton of things you haven't seen. A large part of the story (including path companions), class questlines, NMs, all the sidequests but the most basic, 90% of the game's abilities (and with them 90% of the combat gameplay) and so forth.

Please, let's be serious.

Sure, let's do that. As the other person mentioned, the content is the same whether you're rank 5 or rank 45. You're still gonna be doing leves to get SP, and it's gonna be the same kind of gameplay, expect you'll be somewhere else. And come on, are you really saying he missed out on the best part of the game because he didn't do the 4 main scenario quests that are so lame I wanted to shoot myself after doing them? Only the last one was cool, and that's because the cutscene was awesome.
Crafting doesn't change one bit whether you're rank 3 or 39. The current sidequests do give us some lore but come on, that's like saying a book is awesome cause it has pages. MMOs are supposed to have those things, period.

Your "conspiracy" theory is what's hilarious. Don't you think if they wanted to be evil reviewers out to get Square Enix (I'm not even gonna try to figure out how you understood that), they would have reviewed the game sooner to tear it apart when it was even worse? If anything, they're the only people who gave the game a chance with this 10 months wait.

I'll say it again, reviewing it 3 days before the major patch was a bad idea, but jesus christ everything he says is true, never mind the fact that he's not aware of everything 1.18 will bring.
Before you label me as a FFXIV hater like you did with the people who didn't agree with your point of view, I suggest you ask yourself why I would spend my time playing a game I hate.

I'll say it again, I think this review was written like 6 months ago when things like "Auto attack" was a rumor! Someone then left it on their "To publish" desk and were all like.

"Oh shit! This is $4.00 ripe for the pickings from MMORPG.com!"

maybe you misunderstood me everything that yoshi-p have been doing sound like wow then when you really see it like the dungeon video it become something new and fun that i know SE can do that what i said sorry if you misunderstood me.

not being a fanboy i don't dislike wow and i know wow don't make the features but when you talk to anyone who know about mmo and you say jump,swim,dungeon they first game come to mind is wow that what i meant not that ffxiv becoming like wow.

Except that Trion has had hardly any "junk to get fixed". That's the difference.

They launched with a mostly complete and stable game, had relatively few bugs and such to deal with, and have mostly been able to move forward with content releases as planned. Rift is chugging along in pretty much the manner FFXIV should have been.

SE had an update path planned out as well, the difference is theirs was based on a game design that has since had to be pulled and completely revised. In the face of all that was wrong with the game, the worst thing they could have done was "stayed the course" and continued on with their planned update schedule anyway.

It's like setting out on a cross-country drive, your entire trip mapped out with specific stops planned along the way. Barely hours after you set out, you realize the route you mapped out is closed down due to severe flooding in a couple states along the way. So, you have to now go back and plot out an entirely different route, scratching a number of planned stops off the list in the process.

SE has been in the process of plotting an entirely different route via their efforts to review, revise and redo major aspects of FFXIV's design. Starting with 1.18, it seems, they're finally setting out on the new path they've plotted.
