Are there any plans to fix the 'Haurchefant' localization?

Proper JP to ENG translations for products exist all over the place. I've seen them. I've read them. I've watched them alongside people who were fluent in both Japanese and English. It's why I prefer subtitled anime because English dubs can never truly encapsulate what you get with subtitled content. There are exceptions to this rule, of course, but the brunt of it is undeniable.

It's not difficult, nor impossible for a skilled linguist to create them. There are fan-made translations of manga and anime that accomplish this, and even much of the game is already translated in this way. Hell, even Japanese dialog pasted into DeepL reads better than what I get in some localized dialog. I don't know if that just means DeepL is that good, or if it's a mark against the localizers, but your overall point falls flat.

Yes, certain things may be lost in translation, but such things are not impossible to account for and are typically dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Tone, mood, etc. ARE capable of being preserved and translated, which is why I often find myself preferring the direct Japanese to English translations of things. The tone is simpler, it's more palpable, and there's less text in general.

It wouldn't be that difficult for SE to give us a proper translation of things, either. They already do it for FR and GER, so why not English?

ok, let me be super direct here so you understand. this falls under the category of "in your dreams". you may think its not difficult and probably not but this would entail the proper team to take time away from content they currently working on to drag out old text and cutscenes. then contact the original voice actors and have them come in and redo their lines to what you want to see. then reintroduce it all into the game coding, test it to make sure the changes are fine then release it in a patch.

like do you people not think "oh hey will this take resources away from upcoming content being developed".

also even subtitles has some loss in translation. for some reason theres a bit of a loss between japanese and english. some stuff has to be conveyed differently.

I want him to match exactly how he's portrayed in the Japanese version, at least if we have JP cutscene audio enabled like I mentioned in my previous post, so that way the vision matches and is consistent across all versions of the game. I don't see why so many people are uncomfortable with this change, it's not like it'd have bothered you had the change not been made.

You would have either overlooked it or you would have simply not liked it, but we would still have that knowledge that it's a popular trope among JP culture and media which would help people to understand the medium itself and bridge a cultural gap, something that often times goes unappreciated by Western consumers of such media.

"at least if we have jp cutscene audio enabled" how new are you to this game. in game. System configuration: Other settings (red one at the bottom on the left)>change your language settings>apply and close. theres no literal need to force japanese language on the whole world cause you wanna experience him in japanese glory lol. you pay your sub. make the audio change. replay the scenes and enjoy lol.

It really wouldn't take that much time, nor resources. They already have a translated JP > ENG script (they have to), and it certainly wouldn't take them much trouble to roll that out for those who would prefer that over a localization I've worked in QA, specifically with regard to localization testing, and the pipeline isn't that complex. In fact, it's one of the simplest out there.

Do you know what you get when you change the cutscene audio to 'Japanese' in the game settings? You get Japanese cutscene animations and voiceover audio. It would be OBSCENELY trivial to implement text which properly represents that, and even more than that.

I am thoroughly bothered by the one taste of JP-Haurchefant that they couldn't dub out.

The forum is the place to send in feedback, though.

I just can't get over the fact that this myth that a direct, proper translation would be unfeasible or not viable, even after we've already established that FRE and GER are more of a 'direct translation' which works into their strengths. SE's own justification for going with a localization approach, rather than a translation approach never implied that translation wouldn't be viable, and that moving over to that approach for players who want a more 'genuine' experience would be a good thing.

I cannot tell you how much I despise what they did to this character. It showcased everything wrong with the 'localization' approach. They might as well have given the characters different 'western-sounding' names and replaced all references to JP culture with lame American ones (replacing snot bubbles with 'ZzZz', swapping Japanese foods with hamburgers, replacing Japanese holidays and traditions with American holidays, etc.)

In any case, though, this isn't really about that. That would be a proper approach to fix Haurchefant's revised dialog, to have a wholly different script for players who opt to play with Japanese audio over English.

I guarantee you would have not cared, overlooked it, or would have sucked it up and maybe taken the opportunity to learn about a popular character trope found in Japanese culture. Or just not played it, which probably would have been better for someone like you who takes such gratuitous offense to a trope in Japanese media.

They fixed him by turning him into less of a perv in English. I still didn't like him tho, good riddance.
