Samurais dont use heavy armor, it restricts their motion and attacks, at most they use chain link.

True Warrior poses alot of similarities to berserker true. Could be what they did. I wish they would rename warrior to berserker and give warrior the dps role i wish it had then.

Probably, Red Mage will be either a Healer (with Black Magic for attacking and White Magic for healing, using melee skills for MP management) or a support DPS (like they have always been for the past 13 titles).

Final Fantasy Explorers is a spin off based on Monster Hunter game mechanics. I really doubt the dev team would take anything from it as inspiration for FFXIV, intead of going for the classic titles like they always did.

That would be Mystic Knight, not Red Mage. These jobs identity don't overlap in any other games except for XI.

Actually, Samurai used a version of lamellar armor. It was indeed lighter than the plate armor of the European knight, but still pretty heavy by armor standards, with a full set weighing somewhere between 40-60 lbs. That's quite a bit of weight to be running around a battlefield in and this is displayed in much of the art of samurai sprites in Final Fantasy.

That being said, from a gameplay standpoint, it makes more sense for Samurai to be included as a DPS at this point. The tank meta is still in flux and introducing another tank into the mix would only create massive imbalance. I bet we see SAM as a melee DPS, some type of melee caster (mystic knight or red mage), and a possibly a melee pet class (beastmaster... complete with whip I hope).

If they add 3 DPS classes, you can say goodbye to Duty Finder for, at least, 6 months.

If they add a tank class then the whole endgame meta will be turned on it's head too. Unless they bring the tanks more in line with each other before then, which is plausible considering the 3.2 adjustments. BST could be a really neat tank with the ability to shed hate onto a bet through positionals, etc.

Same could be said of healer too... unless they decided to just throw classes to the wayside. FFXI PUP... I'm looking at you.

i feel red mage should be a tank, at the moment we have 3 tanks 2 are mt and war is ot by design and i feel samurai would be too much like warrior, and we already got a two handed sword tank in drk. if it were also a offensive tank as such why not make rdm an offensive style support tank more designed around magic dmg and work toward building warrior into more of an offensive style physical tank.

as a bonus samurai is already a perfect fit for dragoon gear so no need to create a new set for either job.

And FFXI is the only other Final Fantasy MMO, so what was your point again? FFXI has a different Mystic Knight called Rune Fencer which was a tank which used magical runes to block elemental damage. It is this job which is closer to the original FFV mystic knight, as they both use heavier armor and more defense-focused skills.

The only real 'borrowed' skill is Spellblade, aka 'En-[element]' which enchants your weapon to deal elemental damage. Make no mistake, the true Mystic Knight was built more to soak damage than as a melee mage.

I would like to see either Red Mage or Blue Mage put in as a Ranged Caster.

Healers, Support, and Tanks got their share of love in this expansion and if they're going to add another melee DPS through Samurai in the next expansion, I believe they can make either Red or Blue Mage into a ranged caster DPS. Whichever doesn't get the ranged treatment will probably end up being the first melee caster DPS if they pull it off right.

I highly suspect Dancer will be the first melee Support class, but I could be wrong.

Red Mage, being the most versatile class in the FF repertoire, could fit any role the game has to offer. I think it's most likely to be a melee/caster support, but anything could happen. I also wonder if it'll mean casters can use shields again.

Samurai is almost confirmed to be a dps, as Yoshi said in one of his interviews that if it was a tank he'd call it Shogun. We could use a sword dps anyway. Maybe it'll be a true dual-wielding class, with a Katana in the mainhand slot and a Wakizashi in the offhand.

Blue Mage is more likely to be a "build-your-own-class" than Red Mage, but I doubt they'll take that route because this is meant to be an accessible game. I actually think BLU could work well as a tank, given it's "get hit to learn things" history. Think Wrath/Abandon stacks, except you gain them by taking hits instead of dealing them.

I've seen some talk of Dancer being an evasion-based tank, although as a healer that sounds like something out of a nightmare. It's more likely to be a melee support, or even a melee healer.
