Tales from Duty Finder: Some make you laugh, some make you cry. Let's vent. 2.0

I had a WHM in Porta Decumana wipe us twice because
Wipe #1: They only ever cast Medica and Medica II while out in the boondocks with the BLM while tank and I were melee'ing. Tank died as a result after using invuln and so yeah.
Wipe #2: They ran away with the stack marker in phase 2, thus nuking themselves because they didn't know what it was despite both Castrum and Prae having it. This time, they at least used Cure and Cure II - the latter of which only when Free Cure proc'd.
I never saw a Stone, Aero, or Lucid Dreaming used. I only saw Presence of Mind used once. They constantly ran out of MP.
They had three of their item level 50 WHM gear equipped. Everything else was 47 and lower, including some Lv.1 jewellery.
I'm sure they were a free trial, but by the Twelve how tf did they even get to that point without learning their kit.

So I was in the Level 87 dungeon when I noticed that our DRK was dying awfully fast. I wasn't sure what was happening since I was healing on time, the DRK was mitigating frequently and properly, and the Reaper and Bard were using their AOE abilities.

Then I looked at the Bard. They weren't using any of their songs. I wasn't sure if they were just half-asleep or anything, so I asked them if they forgot or something. But nope, still refusing to use any songs until about halfway through the first boss when they FINALLY popped Wanderer's Minuet (not in sync with any burst windows, mind you). Then they went right back to not using any songs until the next boss, popped Wanderer's Minuet halfway win, and then no songs again.

I don't even think they were a bot because I think bots would play better.

Just had a WHM who did nothing but spam Cure 3 on P8 Normal. The poor AST was having a panic attack, their co-healer kept dying on top of misusing his kit, the tank was too slow to react and some DPS got caught on AoEs. And to top it all off, the tank LB'd while we could have used it to raise everyone. I'm so glad I went SMN on that thing. My poor MP bar, though.

We both just shared a singular braincell and it turns out, the braincell actually was a grain of rice

I thought they'd holmgang and heal themself up
They ALSO thought they'd hit holmgang and heal themself up
They fell REALLY low so i Bened... and it was too late

Turns out they Holmganged and it serverticked too late so they died
I had them targeted too, i just looked at it and was like "uuuh how low do they go before healing"

And i wanted to finish my holy cast before Bene... :C

At some point, keeping them dead and solely focusing on healing when its needed and dpsing yourself is the better option.
If your cohealer is garbage and keeps dying (as in, spamming cure 3...), leave them dead, don't panic and just do what you'd usually do.

You may need to heal a little bit more but Ast is perfectly capable of pumping out heals!

Next time anybody sees something like that happen, tell the healer (if you aren't the healer) to keep their mp and swiftcasts for other people that may die accidentally. I don't care how petty that comes across, but a healer panicing to keep ressing the other healer just begs for snowballing and them not having a fun time.
I certainly would keep them dead, and I usually play healer. I have better things to do.

I will try to raise new people, but i will not try to raise people that don't play the game C:

It takes a casual mention and that is it.

I am guilty of not reading that Cure 3 properly, as are countless WHM before me. It took one person to say "hey, use Cure II instead" and it was fine.

In many people's brains, it is just an automatic assumption that Cure III is more powerful than Cure II. After all, you just upgraded to Cure II from Cure I, and Cure II was more powerful. You would assume that this process continues, not give you a weaker spell.

Don't just belittle them on a forum. Every time I see somebody using Cure III (which mostly happens in early trials, since I only ever heal and don't encounter healers otherwise), I just drop a message and the response is something like "oh, I didn't realise. Thanks for telling me!"

If you are just belittling rather than helping, then leave the game.

Or, you know what? You could help them so they don't make that mistake next time? It takes mere seconds to say "you should use cure II rather than cure III. More potency for less MP". I can guarantee you that anybody spamming Cure III hasn't been told this at all. Tell them. They change their gameplay up because of that.

Cure III is an awfully named spell, and a lot of people will have fallen into that trap. I believe the French and German versions of the game call it something different to make sure that it isn't implied that it is a step-up from II.

I almost got kicked out of an alliance raid before because I asked why my co-whm was spamming cure 2. And then they told me they were fishing for free-cure. And I simply said that Cure 2 does not procc Freecure and that freecure-fishing is wasting mp.
I got passive-agressived at for implying that holy is a good button in dungeon pulls before.
I have told Whms before that Cure III is worse than cure 2 and they got extremely defensive towards me

At some point in the game, people should maybe at least consider reading their tooltips - i am the first one to point out if somebody does something horribly wrong - and i'm the one that has to listen to people white-knighting the person that doesn't want to admit they maybe use a skill or two wrong

At some point I DONT want to have to care for people that don't want to play the game, don't read what the game provides them, nor take normally said "hey cure III is bad" sort of stuff.
At level 90 you SHOULD know what your spells do, dunno why that's such a weird thing to expect.
Leaving them dead instead of panicrising after the 5th time is something everybody should do, since it saves mp, nerves and the rest of the group AND you. I'm responsible for more than one healer that keeps dying.

I don't expect anything good from people, many of them are awfully allergic to any tips and other people defend those people to the death. I've seen it all (paying attention after 3 wipes in orbonne - WOW TOXIC ELITIST - too)
Telling people in Frontlines to not fight last place often also gives sassy remarks, i have seen it all.

Also in German it's Vita, Vitra and Vitaga, the same naming convention, just the typical ra to ga instead of numbers, so also no indication of it being different from the other two. Cure II also just flatout has more potency than cure III

I'm trying to help, every single time, but people don't want help.
Only the ones who actively say they're new and ask for help take help, the rest mostly doesn't care.

I keep telling tanks that Arms length is a tank cooldown and Reprisal is an AoE so also good for trashpulls, too
I keep telling Schs to use excog and Soil, too
I have babysat uncomfortable whms into at least using one swiftcast holy per pull, keep the tank targeted and see how comfortable they are with casting more holies in a pull after the first stun. And for those people, it usually works- they see that "wow holy stun is pretty neat" so they actually at least use it 3 times in a pull until the immunity kicks in. And I will do it again. A friend of mine tries the same with Schs. More often than not it will give sass and defensive, sometimes it helps tho and then its worth it

And I AM a casual myself, yet i get so much shit thrown my way just for suggesting to maybe do something different - because being decent at a game is a crime for some people

But I guess you just meet nicer people than me because most of the ones I'm trying to help tell me i'm wrong and toxic and an elistist

It is REALLY irritating when somebody says "use holy". I even encountered somebody that had macroed it once.

I find a lot of tanks/DPS don't pay attention to their health bars. So, it sucks to have them scream "USE HOLY" when even the 2-second stun won't save a tank that is refusing to move out of the red stuff. That, and a lot of people who have screamed "use holy" don't seem to be aware that it is roughly a 3 second cast, and thus if the pack is still moving, it is pointless to use.

For the first time since couple of months… finally a party in Stigma Dreamscape that agreed entirely to skip last boss adds after I typed “Feel free to ignore adds.” as a healer.

Until then, there’s always at least 1 player that went into panic mode trying to burst the add once they saw that ‘Self Destruct’ charging.

I say „holy stuns so a swiftcast holy will make it easier for you when the tank is done pulling“ to struggling whms.

That is not demanding to spam holy, its not demanding to dps.
Holy is incredibly useful for the tank and you because of the stun.
And every healer other than ast has the luxury that they can keep the tank targeted, too
I always only mention the stun of holy

I will still try to help but if you spam cure III in level 90content with no damage going out - you‘re legit a hinderance to your cohealer.
I will try, if they don‘t listen and continue spamming heals and keep dying, my raise-priority for them will fall VERY low

And i tell people that dying happens, all good, doesn‘t matter (ESPECIALLY if you‘re new)
I have a lot of sympathy for people but at some point you should know that, even as a heal princess, you dont need to always heal.

And i can only raise so much, i rather keep the rest of the party alive

Honest mistakes are a thing but the way that post reads, it looked like that was the only thing they were using - other than dying - so i find it hard to see it as an honest mistake

And you have too much faith in others because you read the tooltip wrong
Most people that spam cures dont use thin air/lucid/assize so they straight up never read tooltips and or just don‘t care
Those are the people that get offended if you give them a tip

Nope. Definitely not. It was just how long the pulls were lasting because of our really, really bad Bard who wasn't pressing buttons to kill things faster.

Now you know how it feels whenever I see a bunch of Au Ra and Miqo'te on Bikinis. Not that aiming to heal them is hard, the party list helps. But it does make me wonder why the hell you're tanking on a bikini of all things.

I know right! I Also wonder that too! Also got 1 roe in speedo it was the most awkward moment along with the 2 guys in the party.

It's the fur. Not that it helps, but at least gives the illusion there's something covering them.

I don't pay attention anymore. I just ended up chalking it to "Eh, aether shenanigans" and barely bother looking at who's in my party. But every so often in voice chat, you do have people uncomfortable that X player is stark nakey. Especially in places with hazardous environments.

We have so many good glamours in the game. Even for the larger races, where it's hard to glamour due to stuff being stretched, there's some good stuff. Why do people insist on going into battle as Godbert? :| You're not Godbert. You'll never be Godbert.

Definitely the wrong franchise to expect anything even remotely resembling realism or practicality. It has an in-universe explanation however; Glamours are just that: glamours. It looks like a bikini, sure, but it's really an illusion, she's actually wearing 40kg of plate armor ;O

Exactly why I then posted that I don't bat an eye anymore and chalk it up to "Aether Shenanigans" xD

Still doesn't explain why people think that qualifies as appropriate glam :P then again! If it's in the game, it's because Square endorses it. So even if we're going to be prudes about it, they're not doing anything wrong. And if we can find it tasteful, all the better~

However, if people think that seeing Roes and Hrothgars naked is cringy, believe me, it's just as cringy to see anyone like that.

I think the only really bad thing would be if people start doing provocative emotes while on those outfits, right? >.º Like, legit question. It's why they blocked people who were being lewd on the Character Portraits, I assume: even if it's in the game, there's a line.

To the DNC mentor we had mostly afking in Weeping City and nearly causing us to wipe to Ozma and for some reason the vote kick failed to go through: I hope you step on legos on your way to the toilet at 3 am.

Yeah, can vouch for that. It's a hit or miss as to who will listen.

Example of someone who took it well: I was in Thornmarch because of Trials Roulette, before the changes to ARR. Got a WHM that kept spamming Cure 3. Our team kept getting blasted by AoEs, and though I was trying my best to heal while raising people as a lv 50 Scholar, we kept wiping. At the third wipe he said "I don't have enough MP to raise everyone", and I pointed out that he's using Cure 3 whenever anyone takes damage. Told him to try and use Medica 2 or just Medica to heal the party and keep a regen on the tanks. Following pull went on well, we met up in-game because we shared the same World and I took some time to explain each healer to him. He went on to clearing Savages as SCH.

Example of someone who didn't: World of Darkness, again a healer that spammed Cure 3. And I mean, proper spam, even cast it when no one but the tank was taking damage. I wasn't even a healer at the time, it was an Astro who had a hard time keeping up with everything going on, especially when the DPS stood on stray AoEs. I told the healer not to use Cure 3 because it's got a shorter range and it eats up a lot of MP. To use other spells, which are less situational. Cue freakout: saying that not only is it stronger, they main White Mage and thus knew what they were doing, and that the fault was the Astro's for not using their healing spells. I didn't even point out that they were healing when no one was taking damage, and I used emoji in chat to make sure that people didn't take it too poorly. Didn't matter.

There really is no winning it, people will get defensive rather than taking advice.

Greatest feeling in Frontline Roulette: start out from bottom rock then for whatever reason then ends up winning the match. I killed nobody, only so many assists but a win is a win! Just 11 more victories then I'll get my mount!

This is why I will not give out advice/tips unless the person in question asks or things had gone so wrong the run wipes couple of times. I'll just deal with it to the end, then maybe vent here (or any other group chats I'm in) if I feel like to lol.

I'd be fine with that if the response I got weren't "But did you say something?". Which... even if I ask "Anyone got questions" when I clearly know what the problem is, people just respond with absolute silence. So it just ends up becoming a weird loop. If I offer help, without mocking or anything, often even trying to be as polite as I can be, people get mad. If I don't, people criticise that I didn't say anything.

That, and more often than not, people generally don't ask :x they just don't speak.

To the random DRK I just had in Troia:

What did I do wrong as a sage that run? Why did you feel the need to constantly spam TBN/Oblation on me when you needed it more? Why did you spam Shirk on me when there was no need?

Was it because I missed the party once for Panhaima on the first boss and everyone spread out? Was it because I dared to come as a shield healer this time, a pew-pew one at that, and dared to dps? Was it because I dared to keep up with you and occasionally run ahead to encourage you to do big pulls? Was it because I kept putting a shield on you, aka using my kit to the best of the run, to make it as smooth and as quick as possible? Or were you more annoyed at the fact that I was also dropping shields on you to spam Toxicon? You were silent the entire run save for the emoted hug at the end.

Because I'm honestly baffled by your actions.

If they shirked the healer and it actually succeeded in giving you aggro speaks in volumes that they had no aggro and neither did the DPS.

At least you made it through that run unscathed from what it seems.

There were 3 spots where I almost pulled aggro off the tank while I was aoeing after I got Shirked. I'm just honestly baffled by the tank I had.

I don't understand why tanks get all huffy like that. I consider it a personal insult if I don't have ALL the aggro all the time. That's my job and I'm not doing it right if I don't have aggro. If they pull before I do? Great! They trust me to pull it off of them and go crazy and do W2W...in which I'll do just that.

I think the only times I've ever used Shirk is when doing Trials/Normal Raids and the other tank jumped in as soon as the walls go down. I assume at that point they want to MT so if I ever saw my aggro getting up there I'll shirk it to the MT and continue doing what I'm doing. I don't want to accidentally pull aggro when the boss is right about to do some sort of cleaving attack. If the MT goes down I'll provoke and hold them till the MT is back up in which I'll shirk my aggro back to them...unless the run is almost over in which I'll just finish the job.

Alzadaal's Legacy. Usual Tank package consisting of doesn't use dashes, doesn't use mitigations, cannot keep aggro. Sits there and tries to give advice to the rest of the party that no one asked for on bosses or in the rooms before the second boss(during those mobs they mention attacking the things in the middle that summon more adds, the whole time while being out of attacking range of them and single target comboing the pack of adds they currently have...).

Side note. As usual I didn't call them out or say anything, so if anyone has the fortune to run into them I hope you enjoy.

Confession: I've made several people get angry in Duty Finder before thanks to me being a noob tank. I keep forgetting to pop my defensive cooldowns, and it results in the healers having to work overtime to keep my sorry rear alive. It's not like I mean to make the dungeons harder; I really am just bad.

Thankfully, most people seem rather receptive to new tanks and are willing to give a hand. So as long as you admit you're new, you're fine. The real issue are people who refuse to listen and get snippy at people. So as long as you're willing to learn how to not give healers a heart attack, you're fine.
Also, remember it goes the other way. You can't do their job for them, there's only so much you can do. Healers can also be new as much as they can also be jerks. (Unless you're WAR, in which case the healer is just there to help you when you run out of buttons :p)

Friends report seeing a strange rise in deeps getting upset when the tank big pulls.

My uncle pulled all of Wanderer's Palace to the first boss because that pull is kinda fun and new Living Dead is silly. There was a Black Mage in the party (friendly after the duty so will give them benefit of the doubt) that mentioned not having to pull the whole dungeon. There was a single wipe there due to a minor misplay on the healer and tank's part (mistimed invuln + missed aggro on two mobs). Perfectly acceptable for players fresh out of ARR. That is no reason to abandon all hope into single pulls. Naturally my uncle ignored the chat and did the big pull again after understanding where he messed up and it went perfectly. There were zero wipes for the remainder of the dungeon and the healer (who is his partner) had zero issues with big pulling.

Honestly baffling, big pulling puts pressure on healer or tank, all the dps must do is push the aoe buttons so I am most confused... Why would a dps be upset with a big pull? Even a single wipe saves time over single pulling, especially if the player who caused the wipe is willing to learn. Seriously, let the new players pull it all and learn because how else are they going to get better?

Been playing with a friend, me as a Tank most of the time. He's been trying to get me to stop being so over-anxious about Party chat to make me look at it more. Got to say, meeting wholesome people everywhere.

Its probably safe to stop doing this now. Last patch they changed regen to only add agro when the spell is first cast, so its actually much less of a hindrance when pulling then it used to be. Not that im telling you, or anyone, how to play. The english language lacks the proper vocabulary to describe how little i care about how you play.

I prefer to slag myself off than others. Big sorry to the group I repeatedly wiped in Zot today. I was probably one of the worst healers I've encountered.

Long story short, pet drama this week left me exhausted and I thought it was a good idea to run a dungeon after a week of hardly any sleep.

I was so bad that I didnt even realise the tank was dead until the group was dead more than once, pressing holy as if its a range skill (I thought it was glare), and couldnt avoid a single mechanic. It was an utter shitshow and I feel quite bad about it because we spent some time with the tank trying his best to help me. You were on a losing battle, I didnt even know what buttons I was pressing half of the time.
