I mean, if you're going to give criticism, don't be disingenuous about it.
It's something I wish FF14 did. They spend so much time and resources on creating these zones, to be rushed through the MSQ.
There are people out in those zones every day. I am there every day, i see them out and about....so Im confused...
Loads? Besides hunt trains and maybe farming a fate for a very specific reason... what else? Unless you're gathering you very rarely go out of your hub, and even then...
I enjoy most of FFXIV instanced content, but the open world of this game is easily one of the worsts I've ever touched and seen. The zones are beautiful, but there's little exploring involved and very few incentive of doing it. Since I started playing this very rarely I see people roaming around the map, only at relics first phase, events that involves fates or a specific boon of new players because the map is just a tool for the MSQ, not because there's something interesting to do there.
You can point the strong parts of the game, but this isn't one of them. The game is built around instances, besides a few content that's hardly impactful (like doing 3 quests per day on a beast tribe). And sometimes even then they're inside another instance (leves, maps).
Even leveling in the open world isn't a thing tbh, besides doing early hunting log. If you're leveling your second job you just spam roulettes/dungeons/palace of the dead.
Seems to me that some people are putting some of the "I miss hardcore grinding outdoors, forced to be with other people who are also having to hardcore grind", like FFXI, EQ, type stuff, in with a sort of "dang those kids back in my day we used to walk up hill both directions to get to school" sort of fist shake.
It's fine to miss that sort of stuff but that's the sort of stuff I'd never want to do again XD. Also I don't see a strong relationship of casual players and lack of desire for open world content, casual players also like the open world. Or just to speak on those solo players destroying the game (more generally 'casual'), that makes up a /huge/ % of the playerbase so if you had decided not to welcome that group then the funding to the game, and thus the ability for the game to be so large, would be significantly impaired. We're stronger together, but if we had to get to brass tacks then.. "casual players are more important than hardcore" I think is a fairly accurate statement, even if we should NOT get to that point. The game is better with diverse options, and supporting diverse players.
On the theme of adding to the open world my two gil: 1) Chocobo hot and cold married to archelogy 2) mega-leve in the form of a sort of madlib quest that covers multiple steps and regions that you can spend a very large chunk of your leve tokens on for major rewards, and a free gil in 3) revamp the hunt log (that we have in-game already) to actually have to deal with hunts, and make some tweaks to the hunt system itself to further encourage both the active first come first serve hunters and the passive "I just want to hunt big beasts in the open world" group. A huge aside 4th would be a huge change in squadron system to be more like a military type of content for your GC, creating, defending, supply outposts, forward bases, stronghold assaults, chocobo caravans, etc (as well as going through dungeons, but they're remixed a bit as in the story you're coming through them again after you already cleared them out).
I think that some people just enjoy grinding. At the end of the day all the repetitive tasks we do are grinding in one way or another, and it can be quite relaxing. It doesn't need to be a "back in my day" situation, nor something only nostalgic. There's even MMOs and games that work all around grinding, and many enjoy it. I personally go back to Ragnarok Online every once in a while in private/low-rate servers and level up in a chill way, even try some guild wars, I always meet new people this way and have a nice time - of course like all vanilla servers it gets stale after a while since it's a content I already know a lot about. I try weird builds, or grab an afternoon to grind for a card with randoms or friends, and it's always a nice way to kill time.
But yeah your suggestions are pretty good! Particularly I don't believe that FFXIV will ever work on it's open world, it does well it's instanced content and that's ok. It'll keep throwing a fate here and there, but that's mostly it. It shouldn't try to tackle every aspect that a game can have, however, sometimes it stings for a bit when I see all these pretty zones being used only as a storytelling tool and not engaging. As someone that really enjoys this type of content and find that it can have a great social aspect and possibilities of party-play, I miss it a ton, but I go to other games for it. I play this for the JRPG above all else, and it does it well, so I stay and enjoy what it is, but can't pretend that it actually does some other things well too just because it is a game I enjoy. Open World is definitely one of them.
Yeaaah. After playing GW2 and the whole map exploration thing I really miss this type of thing. It could even have lore bits, or upgrades related to exploration as well. Maybe more ambitious fates that are more similar to the events. Even BDO gives you an incentive to explore the world and do side-quests quests, like better attributes, or knowledge points, so you can gain energy and craft more. There's also the fact that certain parts of the map have their own particularities. It's nice to walk through trade paths too! Also afaik you can do story quests with your friends which makes the leveling process with friends really fun, unlike ffxiv.
After finishing the story, unless I'm looking for a hunt train (which is... eh), doing a beast tribe, or gathering something specific, I'm hardly going into the maps for anything at all. And everyone that plays with me also doesn't. It's literally sit in your hub and queue for stuff. That's actually a complaint that almost all of my friends have. I mean, I guess that's some sort of content since something exists there but personally, to actually think this is good and engaging... that's borderline bad taste imo.
Nice way to say things that other people like don't matter. Hunts give a currency to get their own set of rewards and eventually mounts. Even if you don't like how the community has interacted with them, they are content that matters. Additionally getting S ranks to spawn is not something that falls under "mindless zerg".
Side quests provide XP for leveling alternate jobs, they also provide more story. Sometimes they unlock some other bit of side content as well, though not in this particular instance.
There's a gamestone system for the ShB zones to rank each of them up. You can't rank up Tempest without being in Tempest.
Also like sidequests, Fates themselves offer XP and some of them are pretty darn cool. There's a particular chain in Rak'Tika that I like which feels very unique.
Hunts give a currency, for rewards that haven't been updated in 2 years. Which also doesn't change the fact they are nothing more than a zerg. And yes, even S ranks are a zerg. "Side quests provide XP for leveling alternate jobs". Lol, yeah, people just do bozja for experience.
That really doesn't matter. Hunts aren't meant to be updated throughout the expansion. They are meant to drop on release and just exist. There's plenty of criticism about that system, but they are still content that a lot of people enjoy. S ranks can take hours to spawn. They are not zerg. The existence of Bozja does not invalidate previous methods of leveling. You know there are people that don't like Bozja just like there are people who don't like side quests, right? Be glad that SE gave plenty of methods to level how you see fit.
Now that being said, I'd really enjoy for the relic quest of a given expansion to be tied more to the existing content of that expansion. But that's just not what they are doing right now. As a result of that we get more tools, which I think is a good tradeoff if there must be one.
You can't zerg a spawn. And the point I was trying to make with the hunts not being updated is more to do with that not being something that SE has done to my knowledge. It's likely something that they don't consider a big enough issue to resolve. Either way, we get new hunts every expansion. Again though, there are plenty of criticisms with how hunts work, but that still doesn't mean they don't matter nor does it mean that they aren't a reason to go back to a zone.
Can't think of an MMO that covers every little thing...
We got VR chat and second life that are purely user driven without gameplay.
Minecraft is technically an mmo based around building.
FFXIV, WoW, GW2, ESO and so on are so called theme-park mmos with various attractions scattered here and there.
Only thing needed for the mmo part is that a decent amount of players can play together, and if you find a lack of communication, at least in the open world of FFXIV then maybe you could try out GW2 instead since that's their strong point, while FFXIV seems to have a stronger focus on RP especially with the housing.
I agree. I wish we'd get more reasons to go outside. The FATEs in ShB were a nice enough idea but poorly fleshed out. FATEs offer nothing of value. No strategy and no noteworthy mechanics other than don't pull too much. That's why I vastly prefer CEs from Bozja where you actually do stuff and I hope we get something similar in the overworld.
Compared to WoW it seems like a lot more goes on outside in FFXIV, not that that is saying much in modern WoW.
You have to actually unlock all the trials and such through quests. And BLU skills and stuff. And Gold Saucer and house areas are sort of "outside world" to me, they always have people.
Seems like it is just FATEs that lack in rewards, I think they got targeted for nerfs a few times too. At one point they were one of the fastest ways to level and grind groups were up 24/7. This may have been superceded by PotD since it was before that came out.
Pretty much everyone else has already covered it, but it's largely a mix of both game design and social trends. The game is definitely designed less around (forced) social interaction than a lot of MMOs in the past, but that's not really a FF14 only thing and more of just a modern MMO thing in general. It's still more social than some but there's no question it's not a situation where you have to chat and ask for groups outside of dungeons, etc. It's also a truth that many people, even in FCs, have moved their interactions off of in game chat and into voice and discord channels. That's just the natural course of how the technology has progressed.
As for me, I'd say that I generally like where FF14 is in this regard. If I want to chat in game, I can and sometimes do. If I don't, I don't have to. If I want to chat with my FC, I can do so in game but we also have an active discord too. FF14 strikes the right balance for me of being an MMO I can comfortably play by myself but while still supporting robust social elements if/when I want them.
I like the choice to be social or not. Sitting around grinding for hours listening to someone chatter about things is not my idea of fun. Seriously let's go backwards.. not. You can't force spontaneous interactions. The old way of MMOs is gone and trying to force people into what you feel a MMO should be will not work. Like I said leave barrens chat in WoW, usually there are two or three people who dominate global chats and it gets out of hand really quickly. Attention seekers keep on seeking wider audiences and personally I don't want to be subjected to their nonsense. If you are having trouble finding social interaction in this game then maybe it's a you problem because there is plenty of it to be had. I have seen this topic on every MMO I have played in the past 15 years. Always the same arguments chicken little the sky is falling because no one talks to me!
I find it interesting you keep pointing out this 'fact' when you yourself are speculating yet tell me I shouldnt do that, you're insinuating that people are just talking on discord or other platforms instead without actually knowing they are.
Funny enough, I was in Zadnor majority of today levelling my summoner and I organized full groups in Zone 3 and fascinatingly, only came across 2 people who were talkative out of the many people who came and went without so much as saying a word. The group's I organized were a fate spam, so there were plenty of times we were standing around in zone 3 waiting and yet, I found myself mainly talking to myself bar the very few exceptions.
I never said that anti-social people were bad for MMO's - I'm not sure why people are low-key attacking me because they can't accept the fact that there's been a social change in online games. Is it denial? Is it because people can't handle a single bad thing said about Final Fantasy? Or just simply unobservant? Me, an individual who loves talking to people & getting to know others noticed this change and it's considered a controversial topic to many for a reason I have yet to understand.
I see this more of a online rpg with multiplayer aspects. The problem with this game is that we are focusing too much on what's going on in the hot bar. Constantly pushing buttons like Street fighter. Had the battle system been more like 11, people would probably communicate waaaaaay more in between. There is no communication in this game. You can literally get through everything without typing a single word for help from others. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing... But come on now.... Building memories from the adventure with others is what makes mmos special. Even a simple sub job quest in 11 felt more impactful with help from friends... Chatting it up while at it. Final fantasy xiv has its upsides... But to not even need to talk during dungeons.... Man I dunno. That's just sad
You know what I digress... Maybe saying this is not a mmo is wrong.... Let's call it mmo-lite
Heck.... Even xiv 1.0 had more social interaction elements when doing exp parties and dungeons. Whether we all want to agree with it or not.... Yes... Xiv 2.0 plus improved on several issues... But something special was lost.
The main reasons u see this imo would be people either just looking to complete their in game goals as efficient and fast as possible or people being shy or introvert by nature.
One other thing would be people getting afraid of someone reporting them cause they said something someone don't like, most peeps don't pay their sub just to see it get banned for some random conversation or words they said, so if social interaction with strangers could result in that then they probably do the socializing on a 3rd party app like discord, etc.
Me personally, if I'm not sleepy when I'm in game, then I'm a chatterbox , I never shut up and I love interacting with others, the social experiences I've had in this game is one of the reasons I still play after 8 years.
Doesn't bother me, since I rarely talk to others in RL unless it's needed to conduct some business, such as ordering in a restaurant.
I mean, in your opinion, sure. But for me, that's not accurate at all. I don't know a single thing about the story, as I skip through every bit of dialogue and cutscene that is thrown at me. And I've never played any Final Fantasy game before.
I enjoy the content. I enjoy the dungeons, trials, the mostly reasonable grinds. It's the only MMO I've been able to play for more than 10 minutes before getting bored. It's not disgustingly grindy like a lot of MMO's, which I can't stand.
As for the social aspect, I play this game with my spouse. I'm not using it to make friends. I don't need to make friends because I already have someone who I do everything with. And even when we don't do content together, if we're working on different things, or he's playing a different game, I still don't talk. Unless I need to tell someone a mechanic they don't understand or something. The most vocal players really don't seem like people I would get along with.
I'll talk to FC members if they start conversations, but otherwise I usually stick to myself. I don't want to be forced to talk to people. I don't want to have to ask around for someone to run a dungeon with me. That seems like an incredible waste of time, and honestly, dumb.
Sure, it's an online game. You play with real people. But that doesn't mean I have to talk to every single one of them. And just because no one is talking in shout 24/7 doesn't mean there's no social interaction in the game.
You don't have to grind mobs or what not. It's a matter of having the option to do so. I really don't understand how people can defend this design of sitting in a city, hitting a queue button and calling it a day; when we have all of these great zones they spend time and money on, to just sit there in the dust. The game has issues. Putting head in sand does nothing to improve upon it. It has so much potential, to be the next WoW, yet his cut short of dumb design choices.
Eureka? Bozja?Quote:

Again, i see people out in the world all the time doing all kinds of things...so with all due respect, your experience and mine are diametrically different.Quote:

BTW you never answered me..lets say we run into each other in the world...what would we discuss?
Bearing very much in mind that as a perfect stranger, anything beyond the game boundaries is absolutely off limits.
Bozja ever hear of it or Eureka? They have ques in WoW and in almost every MMO out there if they have a duty finder. Hey try ESO if you want to que and do other things. So if I am chatting in my FC or on Discord you say that is nothing of substance while I'm waiting on the q? Why do you want this game to be WoW? I mean log out of this game and log into that one. Chocolate=/=Vanilla I have come to the conclusion you are not serious with your comments. I wasn't going to answer you but I just wanted to point out your answer was nonsense and very inflammatory and on purpose I am sure. Oh and please answer the questions posed to you by others. If you don't like FFXIV there are other games and that is a fact.
Some play with controller, some feel lazy, some ain't in the mood and the list goes on.
