Maybe it's maybelline~
The issue of increasing the requirement for commendations is something that SE should not have done for those who WERE ALREADY MENTORS. I have no problem with them increasing the requirement personally for new people but those who were already should have been grandfathered in, in my opinion.
My main has well over 3000 comms on her account so just getting her war/magic roles up to speed isn't that big a deal. Personally although I got the notice about it I really don't plan on renewing even when i do qualify.
I have been a mentor since Heavensward. I thought they would change the requirements in Stormblood but was surprised when they didn't. When they did announce the changes I had already met all the requirements. Play enough and you can get them.
Of course there are probably tons of people who got to be mentors much later than that and may not have had time to get the commendations yet that are being kicked out. Many of them may be really good mentors even, I get that. Standardizing the requirements makes things fair for all though and I agree with that. I didn't like the grandfathering in when it came to housing and I wouldn't have liked it here either. New requirements should apply to everyone, regardless of anything.
I haven't actually done anything as a mentor in at least 2 years I think so being removed would not have bothered me at all.
Making mentorship harder is good, now theres less crowns running around just to show off and more helpful people actually wearing that crown. Forcing you to level each job type is good too, a mentor should be a jack of all trades, knowing how it feels to play each role instead of blaming others of how they play their job, they can help and give tips on how to improve.
That's not the case in real life when there are employees for example who have health/pension plans etc (as one example) and are grandfathered in with new people either not eligible for the same benefits of they are awarded less.
It doesn't matter all that much to me but I can understand the frustration for someone who's been active in the program for years and is now told sorry you're not good enough anymore. I have absolutely no problem with them being grandfathered in. With respect to housing I have no problem with that either. People broke no rules, did what they needed to do etc, and to have that taken away would be wrong. I see a similar parallel with the mentor program personally.
The newest 24 man is always a wonderful way to get commendations as a healer. 20 raises, solo healing some raid wide damage, well timed shields or Rescues and your best outfit should do it. An added bonus is getting multiple chances to roll on collectables.
Alternatively you can work on tank achievements by doing dungeons and give your parties a fast and intense run. In your best outfit of course. People usually like it.
I like that the commendation requirements were raised tbh. A battle mentor should stand out in positive ways when doing battle content and 1500 isn't totally unreasonable. I think it sucks that they put Astrope behind mentor roulette but if that is the reason you want to be a battle mentor then you have a much bigger grind ahead of you than 1500 comms.
I feel like glamours would really have to stand out to be the thing you get commended on - though I'd love to have some way of tracking that.
I looked up how many commendations I have on my various characters vs how many dungeons they've run. For science.
Dungeon numbers are based on the count in the achievements list, which doesn't include guildhests (I try to at least do three roulettes weekly for the challenge log, more at lower levels) so the numbers will all be a bit skewed, but it's all I've got.
I also probably tend - but don't deliberately aim - to get "last man standing" commendations as everyone else rushes out the door at top speed.

Female Midlander main (does everything):
1697 dungeons
1731 comms
Female Roegadyn (everything but primarily tank):
207 dungeons
424 comms
Male Elezen (everything but primarily healer):
505 dungeons
890 comms
Male Au Ra (primarily DPS, healer):
149 dungeons
216 comms
Nerdy male Miqo'te (ACN/SCH only):
24 dungeons
46 comms
Warrior male Miqo'te (DPS/tank):
19 dungeons
37 comms
Both Miqo'te alts got started the other week in a mad flurry of PVP grinding and GATEs as I realised that yes, I do actually want Garo gear for those characters I had in mind but wasn't planning to start for ages... So their counts are definitely going to be a bit weird with lots of guildhesting to get levels up from the first-time bonuses.
It's interesting that my main has a much lower ratio of comms to dungeons - though I'll guess it's probably due to a mix of running more dungeons with friends, joining groups to grind for mounts, and having leveled more DPS classes (thus more dungeon runs with a low chance of getting commended).
It's sad I won't be able to become a battle mentor. Even after playing for over 4 years and I still just hit the 1200 comm mark. Now I'm doing collectables 50/300 though and I can earn my trade mentor crown. It does give you a nice challenge.
I really have to wonder what people are doing that say they've been playing for more than a year and haven't gotten 1500+ comms. I had over 1k before I lost my Sprout, and that was during late HW.
Some easy ways to get comms, as any role:
1 - Say hello in some fashion at the start of the dungeon. Make a macro if don't feel like typing "hi o/".
2 - Play well. Not decent, not ok. Play your job well. Avoid the AOEs, use your support abilities. Due to how many mediocre players there are, it's not hard to stand out.
3 - Be social and friendly. Talk about upcoming changes to the game you like, how excited you are for getting that item you're close to getting, how excited you are about an item you recently got. I'm pretty non-social in most settings, but I do try to get people talking, especially in Prae.
4 - Wish people well at the end of the dungeon.
5 - Be the Last Man Standing when it comes time to leave the dungeon. Sometimes people will try to comm someone and they'll leave before the comm be made. The window is already open and they'll just click another name. Be the only option and you can get that comm.
Biggest way to get comms that doesn't rely on role, though, is to be friendly and social.
If you're comfortable with playing Tank or Healer, both of those roles are more likely to get comms than DPS ever will be. A Lala will boost that chance even more. A cute/witty name for your Lala will boost it even more. I know Lalas are food, not people, but they still comms more frequently than the other races.
The problem with the comm system is that it doesn't take into account certain factors. If you run with other people, for example, there's less chances to get comms. If you use PF for whatever reason, you won't get any at all.
And sometimes people just don't care. You can be friendly explain and mechanics to new players and just get nothing.
I think it should be less about comms and more about completions, like having all the ex trials and dungeons done.
I say nothing 99% of the time unless someone says hi first, and I tend to get at least 1 commendation 3 out of 4 times.
This I can agree withQuote:

Again, I rarely say anything, 99% of the time it's just a hi or "\o" in response to someone saying hi.Quote:

See response to numbers 1 and 3.Quote:
4 - Wish people well at the end of the dungeon.
If someone is watching a cutscene, sure, you can stick around until they finish to potentially get their comm.Quote:
5 - Be the Last Man Standing when it comes time to leave the dungeon. Sometimes people will try to comm someone and they'll leave before the comm be made. The window is already open and they'll just click another name. Be the only option and you can get that comm.

The race of your character has nothing to do with getting commendations, competent players get more comms than those that stand in all the AoEs and don't make use of the appropriate skills at the proper times(AoE during big pulls, party wide buffs, etc). As long as you're making an effort, and not causing people to worker harder rather than smarter, you will likely get a commendation. This still relies on the other players decided to actually GIVE commendations, or that they are actually paying attention to what others are doing to notice the small things(or big, such as dodging AoEs).Quote:

And this is all based off of my own experience as a DPS main(since before HW), who has over 4k commendations
I'm rereading my post and trying to find where I said any of my suggestions were/are a guaranteed way or the only way since that appears to be how you read it.
I think you're being far too serious about this whole thing. Lalas are more likely to get comms, catgirls/boys and bunnygirls being a close second. I don't know why you're twisting what I've said into a claim that race matters more than skill, either. It's like you got offended by everything I said and felt the need to call me a liar.
I gave suggestions and you roll in being mad.
My Big bulky male roe get more coms than my lala... because roe is rare in my server
Tbh there are plenty of reasons, from just not doing group stuff often to playing mostly with friends to playing alts - or heck, taking breaks from the game.
I spent a year or so playing an alt and now have a few hundred comms sunk into a character I'll probably never play again. I've also taken several breaks from the game. All told, I'm sitting at 1059 comms, having started right around when HW came out. :p
At any rate I think the whole comm thing is silly. They're not much of a good measure of anything in most cases, other than time sunk queueing for stuff with randoms. I guess there's merit in that, but it says extremely little about actual group contribution or positive attitude. I've gotten 3-5 comms in groups where I *know* I did poorly, and didn't say a word, and was just probably the only dude not in a premade group. I've also given comms to the dude with the cool name because it was an awful run but they made me smile. It's a silly measure for aptitude for mentorship imo.
So in regards to earning commendations.
From experience these come super easy from solo queuing roulettes as a tank or healer as long as you don't suck at your job. DPS seem to get commendations far less frequently unless you have a good looking glamour. Also DPS tend to wait far longer for most queues so they aren't going into duties as often. Additionally if you add friends or FC mates as party members to queue together you reduce the max amount of commendations you can get in that duty by 1 for each person added.
So, if your complaint is not meeting the commendations requirement to keep your mentor crown the solution is to queue regularly alone for duties as a tank or healer since those jobs are generally in demand.
