Ast was a major missed opportunity for a new healer. All that happened was the introduction of a half-cloned whm, plus their cross-over skills. As such there will always be a magnifying lens on the balance. Their created situation, so they'll get these Ast v Whm for as long as these two classes have this uneasy co-existence.

There was an opportunity for real divergence with a third healer - looked like too much work for them. Hopefully with a bigger budget the next expansion will provide real differentiation in any new healing class.

All healer jobs are overpowered. All of them, unless you're constantly riding that Cleric Stance button (and even THEN it depends on the content) - are boring.

My biggest fear for 4.0? That tank mitigation and healer throughput will continue to be scaled so high that both roles are constantly funneled into half-DPS hybrids and any new tank and healer jobs will continue to be judged on that merit (and that merit alone). If I actually have stuff to HEAL on my AST, I might be back. If content is still tuned around "put a HoT on the tank and spam your AOE deeps moves", I'll be sticking with WoW.

Hell, I might just stick with it anyway, since Legion is actually pretty good. But no matter how critical I might seem at times, I really do like FFXIV, and I'd love to feel like a healer main in this game again.

I think this is bound to happen. Isn't what you want just the entire open world?

Diadem and Eureka should be timecapped, not only should it be timecapped, it should be time sensitive. you should actively have to be completing various objectives to extend the timer in order to complete other objectives to obtain rewards.

The problem with Diadem was that it had 0 objectives after you achieve flight and that there was only 1 optimal way to obtain rewards. they need multiple varied objectives in which completing one removes another (or makes it substantially more difficult) and you have to decide which ones are the most valuable to your group at that particular time.

My biggest fear is that they don't attempt to change itemization besides increase the item level.

Everything is held back because there aren't enough good items to spread across multiple events.

I do not want horizontal progression.

I mean, people won't even spend five extra seconds to get a very slightly out-of-the-way treasure chest with a possibility of currently relevant gear.

The probability that enough of those 24 people are bad to cause a wipe and the inevitable immediate vote abandon is just too high. Short of FC content (which would be so inaccessible as to make it a waste of dev time), I don't see how they manage this. Maybe a dynamic difficulty scaling in 24-man raids? Maybe a 24-man dungeon where it's more of a race between the three parties to see who's the best rather than relying on all three parties for mechanics. I don't know.

They wont add swimming.. I just want to go swimming

Unfortunately, I know this as much as everyone that a solution is hard to find. But it is a fact that a lot of people are not enjoying this anymore. All I hear from people I know, is how annoyingly boring it has become. I can only voice how I'm not having fun with this anymore.

Many dungeons? Not really. There are a very few select ones. And the only one that instantly comes to mind is Brayflox longstop and maybe cutter's cry. And I'm being generous to include them. Because honestly only brayflox has an "open" feeling. While still being straightforward unless someone decides to check the occasional dead-end side-path.

But honestly, what I'd prefer to see is harder to kill mobs. Or mobs that can actually cause a wipe. And are not simply there so that a dungeon can last the obligated 20 mins requirement.

Again, Ozma is a perfect example of how to do it. And also shows that the community CAN overcome difficult hurdles. The reason behind wipes is also because everything in this game is too much catered to this suppposed "casual" crowd. Which in turn make people lazy whenever they do new content. Ozma still remains a boss you need to stay focused or you can cause a wipe. The game does not need to continue thinking that we can't play our jobs properly. We have tons of raids and dungeon experience behind us.
Bare in mind, that this is coming from someone who doesn't even do savage stuff. And I still want my game to be challenging.

From my perspective, the tomestone system does the opposite of what you're saying for old content. Hullbreaker HM, Anti-Tower, Sohr Kai etc. etc. are all dungeons that I never run any more, ever. There's no reason, as it's faster to get tomestones via expert roulette. Old tomestones are handed out like candy via raids, bonuses etc. Having a new tomestone come in so frequently (and new dungeons) that push these other dungeons out of expert makes old content old faster and makes it so doing that content less rewarding.

That said, allowing players to catch up can be done in a myriad of ways, and I don't think that the tomestone system works necessraily well at this, nor the best. WoW's system where you get drops in open world content quite easily that give you what you need for Heroic level dungeons that give you drops that you need for Mythic that give you drops for raids, works quite well. At no time do you feel left out of content, accessing content is pretty easy - and you can even just keep farming open world content for warforged/titanforged drops to increase your ilvl (assuming you don't feel like / want to do dungeons, or if the queue is really long). They also have rewards scale to your current ilvl, so as you gear up, open world content rewards are increased. This works pretty well at having people catch up easily, but you still won't have the best gear in a week.

So, imo, the tomestone system does all 3 of what you're saying poorly or not at all.

I also want this. Ignored or not, I prefer dungeons like this. I am always blown away when I do 2.x dungeons about how great they were (comparatively, they are still worse than dungeon experiences I've had in other MMO's). Dungeons in Heavensward, I've got to the point that I don't really pay attention to where I am or what I am doing. I just spam my rotation and chat with friends for 12-15 minutes and then leave. Having variation decreases the rate of burnout. Having multiple paths makes the dungeons more interesting at first, which reduces the point at which you start to feel bored (I'd rather feel bored on my 2nd run through than my first, even). Out-of-the-way treasure chests is an extreme poor method of implementing this, but it's still better than what we have now. I just want my dungeons to feel more life like and interesting, currently they remove all this feeling, leaving them feeling like a chore.

I also like Vydos's point about having difficult trash. One thing I like (again) in WoW, is that in a trash pack there is usually one mob with more HP and more damage that can easily wipe the group if not taken down quickly (due to some sort of skill, i.e. fearing everyone into adjacent rooms which are otherwise avoidable). It's a good idea to have your AoE'er take down the trash pack, while the ST'er focuses the individual mob and interrupts them. In this sense say a NIN could focus the mob and SMN could take down the rest of the trash.

Personally, I'd just like multiple difficulty levels. Have an extreme level of raids (Alex Normal, Extreme, Savage) and have an extreme and savage of the 24-person raid etc. I feel like they could spend some time to create an engine that automatically dynamically scales content for this. I am fairly certain that is what WoW has done (implementing 13 levels of difficulty in dungeons currently, I doubt they individually tweaked each level for each dungeon, but maybe?). I am no software developer, so maybe this is just not feasible. As a consumer, I would greatly welcome it, however.

i don't do Expert roulettes as much anymore. i cap tomes now also doing PotD and Aquapolis. i know some people that almost exclusively get them from PvP. they don't need to get rid of it as much as they need to keep adding multiples ways to get there and keep them all relevant. they should add some tomes to the daily hunt bills, make the B rank a daily and A ranks weekly.

Sastasha and Tam-Tara has extra rooms that no one ever goes into. Dzemael Darkhold has an unnecessary path and no one ever takes it.

Toto-Rak has backtracking and is the worse. Qarn has hidden rooms that people don't open and go into. Aurum Vale's first room is wide open and no one kills everything.

Biggest Fear: RDM will not be a DPS. Or RDM will be a DPS but I don't like its design.

Likely to happen but not afraid of: RDM will have too much utility/performance and be considered mandatory in raids/OP.

Biggest fear: the hint towards red mage had no merit and Red Mage (regardless of role) will not be in the game.

Other, lesser fears:
Dancer won't be in the game as a playable job (the woman in the trailer might just be a monk, can't confirm anything until SE tells us).

The supposed overhauls to systems in the game turn people away from the game.

With the raising of minimum PC system requirements those with older and/or lower end graphics cards and CPUs will be forced to upgrade their systems in order to play at a decent frame rate at least at lowest settings.

The loss of PS3 support means the loss of a chunk of the playerbase, as some do not have or are unwilling/unable to purchase a PS4 or PC powerful enough to run the game. I say this as a PC player.

My biggest fear in the future is that they will take the idea of ability pruning too far to the point that the jobs won't feel the same anymore.

That last bit is the key though. As long as something else can fill that system, this particular iteration can be replaced, and it's quite possible the replacement can do a better job in terms of those functions even while mitigating the annoyances others see in the current system.

For instance — spitball idea, mind you — you could have a sort of job- and character- specific prestige system, where you earn prestige towards specific gear through challenges, dailies, weeklies, and any typical source of tomes, both for the job you queued as or manually allocated the reward toward, and generally. The job-specific exp has weekly capping, either a hard cap on expenditures (where the remainder on a given week rolls over to the next) and a soft cap on gains, or a hard cap on gains alone as is the current system. As you acquire more and more prestige, gear costs decrease, but you're also given access to better, much (almost exponentially) more expensive gear. The character prestige, however, does not cap, and can similarly reduce cost as you progress to higher totals acquired, and can be spent on any job (just keep in mind the weekly, rolled-over per-job spending cap). Same idea, but with better alt support, and one that can potentially throw challenges, leaderboards, or whatever else SE likes into the equation. Because the gains themselves are soft-capped, although perhaps painfully so, players can still progress further with their excess time, though it would serve much more efficiently to gear up alt jobs than to continue with the one that is, frankly, being purposely held back to keep gear checks relevant.

The main thing, imo, is to simply introduce more challenges, greater difficulty, and better learning support early on. Don't baby the playerbase — just provide due support to ensure that the learning is happening. That way you still have an exciting level of mechanical complexity or intensity without a large portion of players holding the rest back. If Yoshi wasn't dead set on the game waiting until level cap to really "start", you wouldn't have players waiting until level cap to really learn (at which point they already have very low expectations and tolerance).

drg STILL having the freaking annoying animation lock/s for jumps. Seriously, why is this still a thing? The same applies for assasinate too! It's so stupid. SAM ending up as a tank. Not reducing the amount of buttons needed for rotations. In fact, it needs to be reduced imo.

The grind is all about the chase. Do people really want stuff handed to them? The grind existed long before FF MMOs. You do crap over and over and over and over again until you can do the sh*t in your sleep. You want something? You will grind. To claim it "mine"; you have no choice, but to put in the time.

I agree with Ryu. Do something other than kill sh*t will ya. There is a community and an economy than benefit greatly from your contributions. You might want to think about that Genaxx.

This is a thread to discuss fears about the coming expansion. Why are you attacking someone else about their personal fears for the game? >.>

The continuation of faceroll content: Others have already touched upon this, but it remains my biggest fear for the expansion. Dungeons have become increasingly stale not necessarily due to their linear design, but the fact there isn't any challenge or variation. They feel like a thankless chore more often than not. Xelphatol is particularly egregious. I've forgotten multiple times about the second boss' push back yet have never once died to it. I just Spineshatter dive back into the fray and it's like nothing happened. Healers typically spend more time spamming their aoe of death than being actual healers. If content is made harder initially, it'll feel that much more rewarding when you do push beyond your limits. Pulling half the room is fine once you're properly geared or perhaps even during the next patch cycle. On day one? That certainly doesn't make me feel rewarded. Have mobs that actually hurt, bring in the occasional mini-boss mob who spawns randomly, have mobs be able to break aggro to maybe catch us by surprise.

Oversimplification: Although, I am optimistic about the possible battle changes, I cannot help wondering if this may lead to buffs having exceedingly longer durations or ability consolidation having us press only a handful of buttons. Basically, making combat feel even easier.

That ideas like PotD with such tremendous potential will still be locked behind the 'casual friendly complexity is a bad word' format where we get 4 room floors with basically zero real innovation instead of an epic labyrinth with all kinds of secrets.

And being that i still really enjoy PotD.
... but you know ... it's a very real conflict for me.
I've tried out (most) all the modern major MMOs (2008-2014) and i know this is my favorite.
I do well and truly enjoy it...

But i never get that same feeling of pure immense journey that i got from FFXI every damn day.
My first steps into Xarcabard and that song playing...
Or a 10 hour fight vs Kirin one night where we were literally hanging by the constant thread of a couple people being alive out of 18 and kiting around the room desperately trying to raise someone to tilt the fight back in our favor, and yeah, i lost 50K experience from dying so many times but i got my Osode that night.
Or the first time i came face to face with the Ark Angels?
Or Valkrum Dunes.........
Or basically all of CoP.
Or running for my life for like 10 minutes across an entire zone being chased by an aggro chain of like 50 mobs trying to kill me and not wanting to die because dying actually meant something and plus it took me like an hour or two to fight my way to this far corner of the world.
The list could go on forever.

Yet FFXIV is better in so many ways, and better than all the other crap out there nowadays, and yet still so far away.
I just fear that the intense trend to veer away from such epic scope on this game will continue into 4.0 and that this game will never realise the kind of potential that comes with having at least some of that kind of thing attached to it.

I'm sorry, but whenever someone describes the difficulty of FFXI as some sort of highlight of the game, I just shake my head.

No, just no. The idea of spending hours on a boss sounds nightmarish, not "fun." Not that XI doesn't have ideas that would work in XIV, but turning basically everything into EX mode verses what we have now would do more harm than good at this point.

If that's what most players wanted, XI would be a heck of a lot more lively.

This expansion will determine the fate of this game. If they follow this ridicilous formula that only caters to a new players while punishing everyone else at the same time as not fixing the tomes this game will loose more players than expected.
That is why I had a thread about Yoshi P not listening to the players if 4.0 content remains like FFXIV then Yoshi P and the devs truly havent listened to the players.
The players already embarassed themselves during fanfest when they could ask Yoshi P for anything to improve the game but instead people are asking about glamours and hildebrand? This shows how Fanboys can destroy a community rather than helping building it up to something good.

The issue I had with that part is that you need to be REALLY careful implementing dungeons in that style. While I personally wouldn't mind a bigger dungeon (Blackrock Depths and the revamped Karazhan come to mind) with an increased reward, without other gameplay aspects keeping advancement on a leash you'd probably get tanks pulling entire rooms of trash to get AoEd down. The increased reward would thus make all other content not worth doing because you'd likely be able to cap tomestones faster with the big dungeon. If you don't increase the reward on a bigger dungeon, you make that dungeon not worth doing (see: Occulus during WotLK).

The focus should be on introducing different dungeon content. Have one be a sort of free-roam zone where you can kill the first three bosses in any order you want to unlock the fourth boss. Have one dungeon require some back-tracking in order to advance. Make another one a coliseum fight where you fight only bosses and no trash. Make another take place on a moving train. Make another a descent down a big pit where your stopping points are to fight some trash and a boss mob.

The mentioned 3.5 dungeon that'll take place on top of an airship sounds like a step in that direction.

As for me, what worries me is what the devs are planning for the battle system (I'm hoping they'll go into more detail on this as we move forward instead of release only a vague video with pretty special effects). Suffice to say, the move to HW has left me with shaky faith in the devs, specially taking into account some of the design decisions they made for certain jobs.

Spiders. I just can't handle them :(

I'm thinking it was during the Live Letter at Fanfest. They were talking about the 24 man raid coming in 3.5 and one of the battles will be a battle you fight while flying on an airship.

I'm perified that:

I see thanks for the info, i wonder if that's anything like Alexander Turn 2 and Turn 11 where there's something else to do other than dodge and kill stuff (would be nice something different and dynamic), still A11 it's pretty much just get in and out of Airship, A2 we had something to do while driving the mount.

And hunts, on HW launch lvl60 was farming tomes and hunts for the gear, was pretty frustrating even tho i got to most hunts in time.

The battle system will still feel unrefined and not live up to a potential revamp that could be. I mean the actual feeling movement, weight and animations of attacks etc.

This. Heavensward is the same as A Realm Reborn, only difference is the new (underwhelming) content like Squadrons, Diadem and Lord of Verminnion

The grind is all about the chase. Do people really want stuff handed to them? The grind existed long before FF MMOs. 38 now. If your going to be like that, well then.

One, HW was an expansion, was that a new game? Many disagree.

Two, at what point did I say I want stuff handed to me? If anything I want the game to be harder because its faceroll easy.

Three, I like grinds. What I don't like is reapeating the same thing for months and having my progress halted constantly because the developers lack the innovation to create meaningful and lasting content.

Oh and you should also take a look at my profile, I do pretty much all content. If anything I do battle content the least because it's incredibly repetitive.

Don't make assumptions about someone you don't know, it makes you look like an ass. You might want to think about that.
