Red Mage (Tank) Please!

Tanks are generally considered "boring" because the nature of their role does not allow them to possess the mechanical complexity inherent in dps. If tanking required as much mechanical skill as dps without a drastic shift in encounter mechanics almost no one would do it.

We have Bard, We have Machinist, We have Summoner, We have Black Mage for DPS
For healing casters we have White Mage, Scholar, Astrologer.

For Tank we have.. Nothing.

Also, White Mage/Scholar/Astrologer indeed do have that same role when they use Cleric Stance, however whilst they do the tank is getting his face melted ;)

Warrior is just one of many tanking playstyles though. I like the aesthetic but I don't like how it plays myself.

When you use Gauss Barrel and WM you turn Bard from Physical to Caster and change its play-style completely. Just like when you use Cleric Stance you change healers into ranged DPS casters.

I am not saying that. I am saying there are many "types" of ranged casters and casters in general for DPS, Healing roles.

None however for Tanking roles.

Honestly though, the absolute #1 reason why people don't take up the tank role in any game is because of the responsibility associated to it. In games where you move around as a group, the tank (the one who bears the burden of handling all the mobs), is typically looked at as the leader of the pack. The alpha. Just like IRL activities, practically no one wants to burden the responsibilities of being a leader. Heck, think about if you joined a simple FATE or hunt group, would you (or anyone else) actively volunteer to be leader? Probably not.

Unless this were a game like FFXI where you don't move around, have a designated puller (usually a THF, RNG, BRD, etc), and essentially setup camp for most activities, tanks will always be seen as the leader in a generic group activity that isn't already being run by a designated leader. In order to change that, you'd need to change the importance of tanks being the first to agg stuff. The boredom bit is relevant too, but is very much a side note compared. Tanks could be over-complicated to make things a lot less monotonous, but that'd also be a hindrance to the population of tanks. It's a big cluster**** situation.

Well technically, removing tanking stances turns them into DPS... PLD being the exception to that, be it in Shield Oath or Sword Oath lol.

Red Mage to me always seemed like he was the leader of the party because he understands every role pretty well.

Technically speaking, a PLD is more of a caster than a BRD or MCH. I mean this in the sense that PLD actually casts spells, as oppose to BRD or MCH which do not cast spells but have skills that take time.

that does not reinforce the position that tanking in general has to be boring. there isn't anything mechanical about WAR or melee DPS that makes one more boring than the other besides not having to move from flank to rear. and if you're saying you're okay with PLD, than you don't even have that.

It's just good to know that the likelihood of this happening is extremely slim. RDM (no matter what you want to picture it as in your head) has always been a melee/caster DD, just because people managed to forced it into a tank role in Xi by subbing Nin and exploiting broken mechanics to make RDM into a tank doesn't mean it is one.

it's really hard to get away from that without changing encounters. i'd like to see it too but i don't think they can pull it off. they didn't exactly show off their innovation skills with DRK, MCH, AST either.

XI took DRK as a DPS because of how it always worked in the FF series in general. DRK was always a DPS style job (hard hitting) but suffered in the survival department because of how their skills/spells worked... not to mention def stats being naturally low. The same is said for RDM in that, just as how XI took it, RDM was always a jack of all trades. They never excelled in any one thing to be equal to or better than the dedicated WHM or BLM. XI simply made them into a top support role, which also argued in favor of the jack of all trades style lesser BLM/WHM spells. Traditionally, this is just how it is in the FF universe. XIV altered that a bit by making DRK work as a tank, likely due to the fact they always wore heavy armors.

strictly speaking, if there's a casting bar to most of their actions they are a caster. if knockbacks and movements make them lose most of their actions they are a caster.

i guess the real test is, what happens when a BRD gets silenced, can they still use what you call "skills" under Wanderer's Minuet.

The distinction here would be between Thematically and Mechanically. "Technically" is wildly over used, but all it means is that the person is speaking to fact. The Fact is, that as you say, Thematically the Paladin is more of a caster than the MCH.

I think for sanity we (as in the average player) use the term caster to refer to non-physical damaged based damage dealers whose abilities require a cast time, so in that sense BRD and MCH as ranged dps but not referred to as "casters" on most occasions

I think what Kaurie meant was that your contradiction was about you saying hybrid jobs aren't viable in this game, and then the next moment you're saying that healers function as casters whenever they apply Cleric Stance. Ergo, hybrid jobs already exist, it's just not possible for a healer to queue as dps* unless they go in with a full group (which my FC has done while levelling 50-60 when we had two tanks or two healers in the same level range).

*) Unless you're a Scholar and switch to Summoner, of course.

I remember tanking as a NIN/BLM in FFXI whenever I was allowed to or just for the fun of it. It oddly enough was very effective in many cases. Non-stop Ninjutsu spells going along the elemental wheel weaknesses to maximize threat and damage. The primary reason people didn't bother though was because it was expensive as **** to keep up with. Dedicated tanks were clearly a lot better though when you hit 90+ for threat holding, it's just that it was a change of pace to go NIN/BLM and gear up with INT and MAB stats.

A casting tank doesn't mean "ranged"

It means spells like Blizzard II.

Ah, yes. My eyeballs grabbed onto "Ranged casting" and skipped over the "Casters in general."

It could work. Like you said, they'd likely need Black Mage as a Cross class ((Shame of you...)) and plenty of uninteruptible skills and skills that prevent one from being interrupted.

As for TOR's Ranged tanks. Basically they're Tanks that use gun. They still fight at melee range, unless the enemy is also righting at range.

Actually I was making the tank stance give you either faster caster, or interrupt protection.

While I know you didn't mean "ranged tank", Nektulos (I merely responded to the "how would such a thing work" comment, incidentally giving an example of such a thing already existing in another game), I'm slightly worried regarding the whole 'casting while taking damage' thing.

If you make "cannot be interrupted" part of their tank stance, wouldn't that take them one step toward being over-powered? I haven't played PLD much at all, so I haven't seen at what rate they get interrupted while casting Stoneskin or mini-Cures (don't know if their new, innate healing abilities have cast bars and as such would be interruptable as well). And yes, I know your suggested RDM wouldn't have access to healing -- which in itself seems like a miss, since afaik having access to both attack magic and healing magic was part of the Red Mage setup -- but I'd like to know your thoughts around this "cannot be interrupted" thing =)

Also, if 3/4 of their aggro skills (just skimmed through your proposed list, might have missed something) are their physical attacks, my concern is that there is very little time/incentive to actually use their magic, other than when off-tanking. Since holding aggro is a tank's job, elaborate side-rotations (that take longer than physical skills due to cast bar) aren't really that feasible. If you look at the current tanks, their non-aggro skills are either the "off-tank combo", or off-GCD instant skills that you throw in while waiting for GCD to tick around. Again, I'm not saying this to immediately reject your idea, but more to understand how you're thinking, maybe even help you develop it further

(And yes, I know a good tank doesn't need to focus on their 1-2-3 aggro combo all the time, and can even do stance dancing in order to do more damage, but aggro combo is still the basic foundation of a tank.)

Red Mage sounds like it'll be complicated, but SqEX has a plan already as it seems. i don't understand why Red Mage when Sage is far more powerful. I just want Necromancer and Samurai but I'll save that for a different thread.

It would be overpowered for Paladin because of how the class was made but this is a completely new job. So you can't really say its OP or UP until you play it.

I know BRD/MCH are expected to DPS...That's what their MAIN ROLE in this game makes them be even if they're a form of Hybrid.

I'm not even requesting anything at all. This is your request for a Magic Tank or some evasive tank. Which by the way, using magic to block attacks or reduce damage just sounds like PLD with a different coat of paint.

FYI - I think a RDM can cast Black magic(spike series) +White magic(stoneskin/blink/phalanx) and RDM can equip "fencer+shield".

But Red Mage is a hybrid mage - uses both white (healing) and black magic (elemental dmg).
IMO the "caster tank" I read from OP is not a Red Mage. ^^;

Eh, the way I think about it thusly. What do you call a character that outputs a non-negligable amount of damage, and also has high support/defense/healing? You call that a tank. I'm in the crowd that'd prefer more magical defenses, rather than a shield, but eh, I'll just be happy to be able to tank with a rapier in that awesome hat.

Make it a melee DPS capable of casting buff spells (oGCD) that buff themselves in certain ways. The oGCD buff abilities will depend on the route of attacks you decide to go with (like Ninjutsu, but without the server lag). Main weapon will be the rapier, of course.

1-2 combo = En-Ice: Makes all attacks (related to combo) cause Chill DoT. Applies player with TP Regain buff for 15 seconds.
1-2-3 combo = En-Fire: 10% damage boost for 30 seconds, attacks become AoE's (TP of abilities is doubled).
1-3-2 combo = En-Light: Makes all attacks cause Defence down (for 10 seconds, mob immune after) and increases Skill Speed for 30 seconds.
Enspell: Depending on the combo, Enspell will become En-{Element} and buff the player. 60 second cooldown.

There would be other skill combinations (4-5, 4-5-6, 4-6-5) to include Thunder, Water and Dark, but I can't think of them at the moment. Other abilities to think of, too. Like {Element}-Spikes, Dia, Banish, etc.

Level 1 – Combo 1
Level 2 – Dia (DoT, instant cast)
Level 4 – Combo 2
Level 6 - Blink (Evasion up)
Level 8 – Combo 4
Level 10 – Distract (target evasion down)
Level 12 – Spirit Dart (ranged attack)
Level 15 – Comrade in War (DoT on mob + party TP Regain 5 seconds. 60 second CD)
Level 18 – Temper (2.5 second cast)
Level 22 – Reraise (instant cast. Off global cool down. Sacrifice 80% MP to grant a party member with Reraise buff. Buff duration 15 seconds.
Level 26 – Combo 3
Level 30 – Banish (170 damage potency, MP cost similar to Thunder. Dia DoT's have a 5% chance in turning Banish into an AoE)

1-2 = Ice
1-2-3 = Fire
1-3-2 = Light

4-5 = Water
4-5-6 = Air
4-6-5 = Dark

RDM could be a tank fairly easy, to be completely honest, as it was a tank of sorts in the original Final Fantasy. Red Mage was definitely one of the classes you put at the top of the party list to draw most of the attacks.

As for armor, a RDM would be wearing the same gear that LNC/DRG gets, which, if anyone had paid attention to while they were leveling, is actually usable by the three tanks as well, as tank gear. Light Armor tanks have been a thing in many an MMO, based on tank stances giving them additional defense boosts to the gear they are wearing. Taken to the extremes, you have tank classes like SWTOR's Assassin tank. It wore cloth armor, but boosted their defensive stat massively upon putting on their tank stance.

Therefore, the arguments of "RDM won't work as tank because reasons!" are invalid. It very well could work as a tank, and still be a classic RDM, because you literally cannot get more classic than the very first appearance of a class, no matter what variations later installments decided to roll with. It's why DRK as tank isn't completely out of left field, because Cecil's role as DRK was to tank and take hits, long before he became a PLD. Even FFIII's DRK was rather bulky, though the Remake fixed their lower VIT stat to something more reasonable.

The point is, RDM is a special class. We all know it. It's part of why we all love it. No matter which way they go with our beloved RDM, even if we don't personally like it, it's not going to be something that a RDM has never done before. They've tanked. They've healed. They've DPSed. They've supported parties. The iconic Red Mage is a jack of all trades. It does everything. Whether the FFXIV crew focuses on making RDM do everything, or gives it an actual focus, it's still going to be a RDM. Might be a different flavor than what we were expecting/wanting, but that doesn't mean they've "ruined" RDM. Just means they went with something they felt embodied XIV's RDM.
