Astrologian Speculations! How will it fit in?

About Astrologian's LB my bet is that it will freeze or reverse time for 5s or so so that the boss / the mechanics will stop but you will still be able to move / get healed and etc (not to attack imo). Obviously my character would love to get some time based magic lol

in order to reduce the "hack" aspect of such LB and to prevent other healers from becoming useless i suspect that the next fights will have less insta death mechanics.

I mean, "time reverse LB" could save the day in Titan Ex if a healer get landslided out of the ring but it wont help in Ifrit Ex if you cant kill the nails fast enough (given that you cant attack under the LB effect) or if you cant coordinate enough to go through complex mechanics.

Read my mind Stance seems to strickly healing. While Stance two will be strickly barrier with Paladin healing potency.

I think astrological sound really interesting. Being able to take the place of a White Mage or Scholar depending on what stance you are in, healing (Tsukiyomi - Moon reader) and shielding (Hoshiyomi - Star reader). if you have a Scholar in your party you'd go Moon Reader stance to be more like a WHM. If you have a WHM in your party you'd go Star Reader to play more like a SCH. I think I remember reading somewhere that changing stances is going to have a long cool down as to not make the Astrologian over powered. I'm definitely going to have to try it out. I am really interested to see how their limit break works also.

Then I googled and it looks like the Celestial Statis LB may make a comeback, which could introduce a stop mechanic - but stop in my mind makes no difference to a stun in this game.

Time reverse sounds highly unlikely.

nope. They explained it as a "It'll be as if time stopped, and then everyone will be at full HP". Don't get your hopes high for a real time stop

Myself and a couple of FC mates theorize that only the animation for each individual class/job will be unique, but the effect will be the same. So, I imagine AST LB3 would look like they're stopping time and suddenly, everyone is revived, mended to full, etc in some epic looking fashion.

Back on topic, I'm hoping that if AST is released as a pure healer capacity (despite having difficulties leveling), it would reduce the amount of complaints there are about healers needing to DPS to be accepted >.>; Don't want to DPS, pick AST!

As one firmly in the camp of "only lazy/bad healers completely eschew DPS" I truly hope so.

Something tells me those people allergic to work will find something else to complain about, though. Today it's "But I shouldn't have to DPS, and you can't make me!" Tomorrow it will be "Don't make me use my barrier stance or advanced card buffs, I'm a HEALER."

That and/or AST who macro everything with a Yu-Gi-Oh announcement macro. I had a tank in satash HM who did this one, to EVERY SINGLE MOVE. I couldnt really heal very well due to my eyes bleeding so much..............

Unfortunately, that will always be here to deal with regardless of class/job (such as the now infamous "Foe Requiem reduces my DPS by 50%") or when you notice DRGs not using Heavy Thrust / NINs not using Huton / Tanks not using CDs, etc. There will people who are just "lazy" and do the bear minimal without regard. I just find it's more noticeable on Healers since Healers who ONLY DPS are absolutely terrible and there are more "things that can go wrong" if a healer messes up.

Reminds me of a picture I saw about how a BLM and WHM were explaining exactly what they were doing with their skills in macros so they could explain to the people how to do a proper rotation / what their abilities do in a "weird attempt to teach people how to play", I guess.

Not all healers that just heal are bad. I only DPS during the DPS check of a boss fight. I have never had a complaint. In fact I get complimented a LOT because I focus on my job. Most tanks, even undergeared ones, can speed pull with me in their party and be confident they will survive. If a party wipes while I am in the party it's because a large portion of the party missed a mechanic and got one-shot (myself included, sometimes - dodging mechanics is a different story altogether). NEVER has a party wiped because of how I do my job, and I get many commendations as a result. I have been healing MMO games since 1999, and I take great pride in keeping a party alive and kicking.

With that said, on the other end of the stick, barrier stance and mitigation IS healing, and if I choose to play AST, I WILL be VERY happy to use those stances, because mitigation IS a form of healing. ANY good healer knows this, so if I see an AST who will not bend to the party needs as a mitigation expert or healer expert, I will definitely be one of the ones voting to kick and replace. People just do not seem to get the extreme power of good mitigation. As a healer I DEFINITELY notice when the tank is using their CDs and mitigating . . . it makes it SO much easier for me to keep him alive. Good mitigation makes healing MUCH easier, and it makes the chances of surviving a HUGE lot better. On the healer end of things, I would be very happy to have a barrier AST by my side.

People are also so worried that an AST will be in barrier stance in an 8-man party and thus only 1 healer would be healing? Incorrect. Like I said above, mitigation IS healing! It's just PREVENTIVE healing as opposed to CORRECTIVE healing. You are essentially healing BEFORE the hit! I guarantee I would be able to solo heal any fight that has a barrier class mitigating the damage.

I have discussed this with my FC, and during Alex raids, we definitely plan to take advantage of as much mitigation as possible. It's making me excited to roll an AST once the class releases. And it makes me even more happy to know that any good healer out there will know and appreciate good mitigation, and know that I am doing my best to make their job REALLY easy.

Oh gods I have noticed this one a LOT. Usually it is in ST or one of the other CT raids that I see this - some healer goes into Cleric Stance and DPS's the entire fight. I end up solo healing the raid. Fortunately for the team I know my bloody job, so I keep them alive, but it WOULD be nice to have some assistance during all those raid-wide hit mechanics, instead of me running all over the circle trying to heal everyone one by one - especially since at NO time EVER will a party be entirely in range for Succor.

I always think that these are the idiots who decided in their minds, "I play a DPS class, but I don;t want to wait for the queue, so I will create a crappy healer which I have no clue how to play just so I can queue faster". The result was nothing more than healers having insane queue times on my server, and a lot of parties getting stuck with healers who absolutely can NOT do their job - ever.

People should only roll jobs they love to do, but MMO games are about patience, and so many players, at least on my server, completely FAIL at patience. If I loved playing Bard, I would not roll a healer just to speed up the queue. I'd stick to my bard, and do crafting or something else while waiting for a slightly longer queue. But hey, that;s just me I guess.

Much has been said about this already so in short:
If we are to take the part I bolded out literally you are mediocre for being lazy, especially SCH can do all what you state above while doing more than help on DPS checks.

And I wish people would stop bringing CT Raids into discussions about those topics.

Just because a Job can dps, doesn't mean it should. I'll dps when I have time on sch, sure. However, I rarely ever do because I'm too busy SOLO healing CT or keeping the tank alive in large pulls to take 2-4 GCD to dot everything up. This includes ALL my abilities can cast to <tt>. Hell, 1/2 the time I'm assisting the other two alliances keeping their parties alive because they're too busy dpsing to heal.

Healers are healers first; stop telling them to DPS if they wanted to dps they'd roll one. ;p

That aside, it does seem like AST will have little in way of damage and that would make me happy. Think of it this way. if its blocked by level 30 to pick up you'll have your chocobo that can attack crap. additionally, it could be blocked by 3.0 storyline start. So if they start at 15 (doubtful) they can fate/heist/dungeon and the same if they start 30 (more likely).

Again a CT situation........ because thats where the serious playing happens and where you really measure playerskill right? right??
Im just saying while you of course priorize healing, you do damage while there is downtime in healing.

Not doing so is lazy - thats assuming you know the fight are are not undergeared - of course.

People who think that AST will have no damage moves are either naive or idiots. All the classes are intended to be able to play solo in the open fields. If they restrict roles, you won't be able to do so. or GL soloing anything with auto attacks only.

AST will have damage spells
AST will have cleric or an equivalent of their own

AST will be able to dps and expected to do so instead of counting butterflies when they have nothing to heal/shield.

This trend of people who find that they have no "time" to DPS even as SCH referencing CT content is really strange. Again, they must have either the worst parties ever on a regular basis or are watching the HP bars of the entire raid, which usually means massive overhealing and wasted time. If another alliance is obviously struggling, sure, throw them a hand here and there, but otherwise you have to trust that their own healers will do their jobs. If the other healers (or their party members) are so terrible,let them sort it out so that the show can go on. Regardless, no other content in the game works this way, so it's not really a good benchmark for any role's performance.

Anyway, yes, obviously AST will have some way to DPS. My guess is that their DPS spells will be tied into their barrier stance unless the new Jobs are allowed cross-class skills from the existing system (i.e. they get access to Cleric Stance).

If the former turns out to be the case, it will be interesting since it would mean that AST could possibly DPS quite effectively while throwing out great mitigation, but they wouldn't be able to rapidly stance dance with healing like SCH and WHM can now (given that Yoshi hinted that there will be a long-ish cooldown on changing between tsukiyomi and hoshiyomi). I guess we'll find out in the near future how this really works.

Some of you guys in here should broaden your perspectives a little bit and liberate yourselves of the trinity thinking. I am a healer, therefore I do nothing but heal. You are primarily a healer, but you should do everything in your power to accomodate the success of the duty. As a healer, you should be aware of your surroundings, what certain things do, how much do they hit for (mitigation-adjusted or without any mitigation), what intervals do certain scripted attacks come at, what certain tank cooldowns do and so forth. If you are aware of all this, you can synergize and minmax dexterously.

On the actual topic of AST: I hope there's more to Hoshiyomi/Tsukiyomi than just being either WHM-esque or SCH-esque with a given stance up and that AST will have their own distinctive "niche things" apart from just some of the cards. (Which might also have mild overlap with the SCH in terms of mild raid buffing). Time will tell.

Heal first dps second that's how I roll but I'm sick and tired of scholars that stays in cleric the entire fight. That burns me to no end. Just roll a damn dps if that's all you do.

assuming 4 man, if the fairy is enough to heal, why not ?

Troll tower doesn't count once again. And trials (HM ones, I've yet to see a healer 100% in cleric in Ex) are such a fucking joke it doesn't matter if there is a guy solo healing

Because having the option there is better than not at all. A lot of the EX primals are single tanked/healed 6 dps. Ifrit, Levi are the two I've yet to see solo tanked and don't think are possible (titan-egi OT doesn't count) but await being proven wrong for those two.

Surprised that no one caught on sooner, considering these are huge obvious red flags but to the point. we're getting skill speed/spell speed changes. To paraphrase what beans were spilled by the devs "Haste was to OP in XI, we want to avoid that in the future". To read between the lines: We are getting the spell haste in some form. Of the 3 jobs, which can bring it to the table? The skill speed/spell speed changes coinciding with it's release pretty much confirms AST will have party SkS/SpS buffing abilities, without the change AST would be completely undesirable with most party compositions (see:SMN, BRD) with how spell speed and skill speed currently work therefore necessitates changes to how those stats function.

I'm predicting that Selene will now be referred to as a pocket AST, hopefully that will translate more usage out of Eos when an AST is present, or SpS stacking WHMs won't be getting weird looks anymore.

*disclaimer: is still speculation, so plz keep stacks of volcanic rock salt handily in arms reach*

Think I read somewhere about the AST job and how it would play, at least a little bit.

AST has two "stances", one that works similar to WHM and one that works similar to SCH. However changing the stance isn't that viable to do that often during fight. (I have no idea if that's just a long CD or some other effects)

Other than that, they can draw cards in different ways... Say drawing one card and using it will cause a standard heal, you can also continue to draw a 2nd card for a different effect and so on.

Once again, I just think I read this somewhere.. Probably the japanese interview with Yoshi-P but yeah! That's all I have to say xD

To me, DPSing is one aspect of the job that helps complete the primary role of the job.

For example.

PLD pulls a mighty amounts of trash.

PLD is currently taking 760 DPS from the pack
WHM uses Holy to help burn pack, netting two things
-7 seconds of stun (thus netting the equivalent of 5,320 HP)
-Pack dies 25 seconds faster (thus netting the equivalent of 19,000 HP)

So, with the WHM DPSing (I'd say about 6 Holy's), we've now done the equivalent of 24,320 HP for 3,192MP (7.62HP/MP)

Now, if you had to cure through those 32 seconds, you would need to cure about 24,320 damage. You get close to 13 GCDs in that amount of time.

Assume the following:
-Cure I's are about 1,100 HP/cast
-Cure II's are about 2,000 HP/cast
-You get a Freecure proc every 6 Cure I's

5 Cure I's and 8 Cure II's = 2*1,100 + 11*2,000 = 24,200 HP healed.
2 Cure I's = 266 MP
11 Cure II's = 2,926 MP
Total 3,192 MP spent (7.58HP/MP)

So, not only do you do an equivalent amount amount of HP/MP spent, you're now cutting the kill time of the pack by 25 seconds. Woo.

SO! How does this fit in with AST?

Well, if I continue with my train of thought that AST is going to be designed to deal minimal damage (a very large assumption at this time), in order for AST to stay relevant, they have to provide a buff to their party equivalent to what a WHM or SCH may contribute to their party via DPS. I would imagine these buffs to be party based in nature, because any single target buff matching the 5-10% the average healer can contribute to an 8-man boss fight would make any singular DPS buff pretty over powered in 4-player content.

Alternatively, they could give AST many different single target buffs that are fast to cast but since you'll be buffing an entire 8-man group, that'll keep them busy enough to not "DPS" while they are healing. Though this has the potential to make them inherently weaker in 4-man content because they can't "contribute" as much (though could be offsetted by the fact they have a couple of DPS abilities they can weave in when they aren't buffing a full 8-man party)

I am interested in how they'll be doing buffs. Depending on how they work, it'll change the nature of the job play style. I don't expect the healing nature to move to far from what we already see from the WHMs and SCH toolkit.

Your example seems flawed it purely relys on the tank, if you holys are going to shave off an entire 25 seconds of TTK, the pack will be dealing a whole lot more than 760dps, so for the sake of simplicity lets say that is after mitigation by the tank and falloff. To net you 6 holys you need 18s(15s w/ PoM), that translates to 13680 (11400) minus the 5320 from stun mitigation that's 8360 (6080) damage to the tank in that timeframe.

Or... the people who think Healers are lazy are way too comfortable in their FC that they never play with PUG's. I can assure you that the amount of time that there is time DPS is rare, and only if you get a good party where the Tank stuns all the AOE's, and the DPS don't take damage. The reality is that the Tank is just as DPS-happy as bad healers, and takes massive amounts of damage that they probably could have avoided. There are people on the forum who actually say they do this on purpose (stand in the AOE's) because they believe healers are lazy.

If a player stands in an avoidable AOE, they are bad at that role, and should probably be called out on it if keeps happening.

As mentioned repeatedly. The people who think Healers are lazy, don't play with PUG's often enough. The 24-man Raids are the only places where they will regularly encounter bad players.

Ugh, I'll go over this again but broken records...

A healer that refuses to DPS is not Lazy. There is no content in the game that requires the Healer to DPS in a party. When you start calling healers lazy for not DPS'ing, you are calling DPS and Tanks' who don't self-heal, lazy as well. You get more DPS out of the party by letting everyone do their job than trying to get everyone to DPS inefficiently.

These are bad healers:
- The healer that switches to cleric stance and never switches out of it*
- The healer that constantly casts healbombs (eg Medica II) and then Holy's**
- The healer that stands around doing nothing, jumping, dancing, or otherwise being obnoxious when there are healable targets.

By all accounts if a healer has enough time to be a clown, they should be doing something more productive.

* It's easier for the SCH to pull this off without being a detriment, but a WHM who does it, is playing inefficiently on purpose.
** I've yet to see anyone do this and not immediately attract all the aggro. Any healer that opens with Medica II without there being party-wide damage, is playing poorly on purpose.

From what I'm reading the AST's stances will alternate between something similar to WHM and something similar to SCH, and speculation suggests it will be "healer mode" where the cards will cast spells that work like Cure I/Cure II/Cure III, and "support healer mode" which would be like casting Protect/Shell/Stoneskin/Regen/Medica II and other Heal-over-Time, and perhaps other time-based support magic that hasn't been shown yet. We don't know enough yet, so let's speculate back on what would make the AST preferable to WHM/SCH

It's flawed because Holy only gives 4 seconds of Stun and then is reduced by 50% for each consecutive Holy. So 4+2+1, so you get a maximum of 7 seconds, but the cast time is 3 seconds, so you only benefit from the initial stun.

1. CT raids keep coming up, hence the continued commentary.

2. I can't speak for everyone, but I rarely have FC people with me for anything but Coil.

3. Yoshi needs to hurry up and throw us another bone so that we can return to discussing AST.

7 seconds is a very long time.

Stoneskin and Regen are for safely setting up the initial Holy. Failing that, there's Swiftcast.

It's flawed in the sense that I've intentionally skewed that scenario where it shows about equivalent HP/MP balance comparing DPS mitigation versus raw healing output and omitted a few more assumptions. For the majority of the time, the HP/MP efficiency should favour outright healing versus DPSing as a healer - though it is kinda hard to beat 0 MP consumed on SCH when Fairy and Lustrate can heal an entire instance.

Additional, to maintain that kind of damage output in the above scenario from a WHM, you will most likely need a Divine Seal'd Medica II and Regen. This HoTs would partially counter balance the oncoming damage since you would get something in the realm of 700hp/tick with my above scenario, so around 4,200 HP back in the 18 seconds. Then you'd have Benediction to fall back on as well if that was up, so you would build your chain-Holy around that scenario.

Shaving 25 seconds off total kill time isn't unreasonable, though might be a high end estimate depending on the group tier. For example, here's the final two packs of trash in Keeper of the Lake.

Total DPS is 1,382.22 over 90 seconds is 124,399.8 damage. If you remove the WHM from the equation, the total DPS is 909.1. To meet the same damage, your group would need about 137 seconds, which is 47 more seconds (23.5 second per pack).

Overall, healing will net a higher HP/MP efficiency. However, if you're sitting on so much MP anyway, why not go burn some to help the group along? Just know how not to overextend.

That's the beauty of healing - adapting to the scenarios given to you and building yourself around them.

Agreed after one adds a bit that "the Healer is only DPSing." It's possible to maintain high Cleric's Stance up time at little detriment to the party, but that's both dependent on the skill of the healer and tank.

There are a few variables to attest to this. I can personally do this with little repercussion to this with my party or myself and not get any hate as the tanks tend to know "OVERPOWER/FLASH SPAM TO HOLD HATE". Of course if you're doing this for single targets... well, yes, you are terrible.

I feel the cards will provide a buff will be independent from the restorative spells. These restorative spells, I feel, should be affected by the stances that Yoshi-P seems to be touting. I expect spells to be similar to Cure, Cure II, Medica, Succor, Adlo, Esuna, and Raise and the buffs to be more unique. It would be interesting if the card buffs themselves would be affected by stance, but I get the feeling they won't. Would like to be proven wrong in this regard, however.

If you time it right, you benefit of full 7 secs stun, because holy triggers with a delay. Why am I even answering this....

Hello everyone!! I'm a bit new to the game but got back into it when Ninja was introduced and I learned about the new heavansward expansion coming out! I am STOKED for astrologian! In real life i'm a tarot cards enthusiast so I am excited to see a class that uses cards and astrological magic. I'm hoping for some cool offensive spells to go along with healing and defense spells. I don't know too much about healing since I've been a Rouge/Ninja since day one but I'm hoping to work on my Arcanist and become a scholar and work on my healing! Very excited :DDD

I would like to see a healing zone-type play from AST - drop a circular healing zone (think Healing Wind from the Tales series) that ticks for 450 potency healing every 3 seconds on everything inside it while you apply adlo-style shielding and buffs to the party. ASTs to me sound like they'd have the predictive/preventive play of SCHs as I think of them as starseers and fortune tellers.

Exactly, and the animation could be a nice "radiating energy" thing with particle effects flowing upwards. Green for healing, flashing yellow when the dispel effect. Do want!
