Update: Chocobo turned Dalamud red, not wine. So it's not an exact science, but it went the right direction, at least.

Calculator said 6x pears, 6x berries, 2x apples. Fed three pears, got the message on the first pear...and now I'm wishing I'd stopped there. Continued with 3 berries for NO feather messages, one more pear, no messages, both apples, no message. Hoping it changes even though it didn't end on a feather message, but I don't want to go with the full calculator values and overshoot. I'm guessing that since I followed to wine in the first place but got Dalamud, I was really close in the RGB values and the pears just pushed it over, I'm just hoping it sticks and doesn't mess me up too badly when the color change rolls around.

I have a hypothetical question, say I got a chocobo from Desert Yellow to Sylph Green and then to Sky Blue, would it be possible to go directly form Sky Blue to Raptor Blue or do i have to take the long way around?

I seem to be stuck in a forever loop trying to get to Ink Blue.
Tried to change it again tonight but somehow managed to stay Midnight Blue. :(
Out of frustration I fed it 4 Mamook Pears and got the change message twice. I guess I will have to see what colour I end up before I try for Ink Blue again

The above calculator http://www.ffxivchocobo.com/ is an automatic version of the spreadsheet and looks like it does a pretty good job of giving general estimates from my limited tests. Its recommendations are 2 apple, 3 pear, 3 berry which seems pretty good as it does remove a bit of red and then darkens it overall.

Long story short, ended up back at this color so I'm gonna try it your way!

this combo sent me to Loam Brown instead, but I continued to follow the calculators recipe from loam brown to soot black, so I fed 2 apples, 3 pears and 3 berries as it requested and this was the result:

The guts of this process is very simple, and that is just break the feeding down into micro feeds, and not do one massive feed. However, what is even more important, is the order in which you feed.

My whole reason to experiment down this path is that I have observed that in a very general sense, is most people recommends XYZ fruits, and the ones seeking help just feed that amount in at one sitting, or one type of fruit until they get a feather proc. What happens here is most people (myself included) just takes into consideration of the math, and not the true value of RGB or color mixing in reality. I myself made this mistake back when I was doing the apple feed, and didn't see this RGB value "wall", and kept on chasing the logic down the wrong path.

A simple example using apples, we move from desert yellow down to blood red, but once we reach blood red, we hit the wall and start to wonder why apple won't bring down the red more. The reasoning behind this is very simple, and that is, the RGB value for blood red (143, 63, 39) has already hit the wall, and any more force feeding of apples will not allow the values to go down any further. See, using apples, we are doing +R, -G, -B, and B is already at 39. If each fruit has an average value of 5 as others have determined, then how will 10 apples be able to bring B from 39 down to -9? It will not, because -9 B is not a possible value for any color. So in this case, only 8 apples has any true effect on the RGB value, and the other 2 are nullified.

To take this into actual practice, we want to take blood red to soot black, the new calculator suggests 2 apples, 10 pears, and 12 berries. So we feed the bird all those fruits, in that order ...

We end up with Currant Purple. Why? Because:

My microfeeding procedure pretty much is just to pay careful attention on the order and amount of fruits are fed to help eliminates a lot of unnecessary mistakes.

The calculator still uses the original RGB values and I have came up with my own 8th scale RGB values. With that said ...

Using the 4 pears and 4 berries, I get a 8/0/8 in Soot Black, so I did some fine tuning because I do not like seeing ranges larger then 8 and came up with 2 pears, 3 berries and 1 plum with a -2/0/-2 in Soot Black. Both are safe to feed all at once because he is starting w 79/47/31, so 20 in any direction will not knock him to the RGB wall.

Lotus Pink (255, 207, 247) is the other extreme compared to Soot Black/Midnight Blue, so yeah, the number is right. I tried doing the reset approach and it didn't save much either. Your issue here is you will be knocking on the R/B wall quite often, so you need to be extremely careful on your feeding order.

Howdy ya'll. I've been trying to get charcoal gray for one of my chocobos for a while now, and after finally breaking out of the rolanberry red-bermuda triangle, I landed on ceruleum blue. From here I tried the single feed method, only to land on turqoise green and then back to ceruleum. This color was close enough to what I wanted so I left it alone for a while till I saw this thread and the new calculator. So! I gave it a shot, with the micro feeding.

Starting Color: Ceruleum Blue
Suggested: 3 berry, 5 pear, 6 apple
Fed: 2 berry > 3 pear > 3 apple > 1 berry > 2 pear > 3 apple.
Result: Shadow Blue :C

Revisiting the calculator now says that I should feed 1 valfruit, 1 plum and 4 pineapple. Thoughts or advice on how to ensure the Charcoal grey I'm looking for? Every snack (even the first berry) had a feather proc, if it helps.

I did exactly what you recommended. The first 4 didn't proc, but everything else did. No clue where we'll be in the morning, but we'll see!

After this, all fruits gave the growing new feathers message, and I did screenshot the whole thing if you'd like to see it. I wasn't clear if the fruit needed to proc to count, or if it was part of the whole process. Hopefully a Lotus pink bird will greet me in the morning! I suspect I won't like it and we'll be working our way back to Celeste Green.

The calculator says 1 × Pineapples, 1 × Plums, 6 × Valfruit still to get to Lotus Pink. I'm not sure why so many Valfruit since all but one of the proc'd. Based on what happened last night, I'd have expected 3 plums, 1 Valfruit, however that's simply based on what fruits were supposed to get me to Lotus pink and didn't proc from the list I fed.

I would just like to point out that many users giving out recommendations early on in the Chocobo Dye thread weren't even using the calculator you got so irritated about. We were doing math manually (napkin math) to try to assist as best we could with the info we had for fruit recommendations; which had many successful turnouts.

I personally have not used any of the calculators so I can't attest to if they work properly or not but I'm trying to keep the resources section updated so that other players can choose a method to try. Chopski's seems to have a decent success rate.

Alrighty, I'll step in here. I think this is perfect time to break down how some of us were suggesting fruit feed values without using the calculator. This is the process that I use to help players obtain, or come close to, their desired plumage colour using notepad and "napkin math".

Chocobo Fruit

Plum - Lightens red hues but at the same time increases green and blue hues.
Apple - Deepens red hues but at the same time lessens green and blue hues.

Valfruit - Lightens green hues but at the same time increases red and blue hues.
Pear - Deepens green hues but at the same time lessens red and blue hues.

Pineapple - Lightens blue hues but at the same time increases red and green hues.
Berries - Deepens blue hues but at the same time lessens red and green hues.

Plum (-5, +5, +5)
Apple (+5, -5, -5)
Valfruit (+5, -5, +5)
Pear (-5, +5, -5)
Pineapple (+5, +5, -5)
Berries (-5, -5, +5)

*Note: Using the +/5 integer for easier calculations as well as the original RGB values.

RGB Estimation: 95R, 42G, 71B

Desired Colour: Dalamud Red

Napkin Math
This is based on the +/5 integer for easier calculations. Focus on getting 1 value at a time to the desired colour range (I started with G below with the first fruit set), then move on to your next value (I focused on B below for the 2 other fruit sets).

4 Apple (+20, -20, -20): 115, 22, 51
3 Pear (-15, +15, -15): 100, 37, 41
3 Apple (+15, -15, -15): 115, 22, 21 <- End RGB Value

Combined Fruit Feeding Option
After figuring out the math usually we would combine the fruits (if there are doubles) and then make the suggested feed based on that.

7 Apple (+35, -35, -35): 130R, 7G, 36B
3 Pear (-15, +15, -15): 115R, 22G, 21B <- End RGB Value

Hence the following becomes the feeding suggestions...

x7 Apple
x3 Pear

Micro Feeding Option - Suggested by AttacKat
The Micro Feeding theory (correct me if I'm wrong AttacKat) essentially takes those values and says if there are RGB walls, to avoid hitting them with large amounts of fruit, split up the fruit in a single feed (this could possibly work better for colour loopers). Basically, in this scenario we would just follow the way we calculated out the values in the above "napkin math". If you want to try to "Micro Feed" then feed it in the following order (or break it down even further if you want)...

x4 Apple
x3 Pear
x3 Apple

In either way the end value should calculate out to the same and with this small amount of fruit I don't think you'd hit any colour wall. I double checked my feeding math against Chopski's new FFXIV Chocobo Colour Calculator and it suggested x8 Apples, x4 Pears; which is pretty darn close to the above manual method.

You can choose if you want to mass feed or micro feed based on the above but either combo should result in an RGB of around 115R 22G 21B (assuming +/-5 average integer and using the original RGB spreadsheet) and should push you close, if not into, the Dalamud Red dye range; it might take some additional tweaking to hit Dalamud Red. Remember your mileage may vary.

As I noted in my microfeeding thread, that we have no idea if our RGB value are actual in game values, and that is where the "RNG" comes from. The RNG is our "error" in math terms (the difference between an approximate or measured value and an exact or known value).

You actually fall into the Dalamund Red range by the 4th apple, because there is no other valid color in game that uses R in the range of 119-143 and G(31). All the fruits following are just to fine tune the value to (127, 31, 31), as shown below:

The calculator has likely been modified to use the "Updated" RGB values that AttacKat devised. When it first launched it referenced what I call the "Original" RGB values; noted in the "Resources" section of the first post in this thread.

When I assist players, past and present, I do quick manual math and don't use AttacKat's RGB's; not to say they are wrong. Several users providing recommendations have always used the "Orginal" RGB's with the +/-5 integer (for ease of calculating) in our recommendations and have had great success assisting player's in getting to their desired plumage colour. I also believe those "Updated" values were meant to be used with a +/-8 integer based on AttacKat's original post regarding his/her change to the RGB values, so I'm not sure if the calculator has been updated to reflect that.

It would be ideal if the FFXIV Chocobo Calculator allowed players to choose their preferred RGB spreadsheet values (i.e. "Original" or "Updated").

We can't be certain if either of the RGB colour docs are correct as none of us know the EXACT RGB dye values and as such both RGB docs are a best guestimate. It just comes down to personal preference. I'll likely stick to the "Original" values for my recommendations, unless something more solid comes to light, since it's been working thus far.

Yes, I changed it the other day to reflect the 8th scale RGB values, but under Attackats recommendation I left the increment to +/-5. Which is probably why your manual calculation in the post above differed slightly as it would have probably been the same to the calculators a few days ago. I changed it purely based on the success with the new values. Seems to be more solid. But like you say there is no right or wrong at this stage, it's probably just lucky RNG. I will see about adding that option in.

Edit: Option added so you can choose the RGB scale you want now. Have also noticed that a lot of recipes are the same using either scale. But I did take a few gambles on recipes that differed for testing before I originally changed the values and they seem to be going in the 8th RGB scales favour.

I am noticing on some of your results, your allow a difference of more then +/- 5. So my question here comes down to is "what factor" are you using to determine the final fruit combo? In most cases, this will not be an issue because the RGB delta from one color to the next is huge, but I am seeing this being more problematic with those color trap/loop areas.

RE: "Lavender Blue" is the dye as listed on the MB, guess SE changed the color name on the chocobo color.

Yes, I need to figure that one out. Problem is, the calculation starts off by rounding to the nearest 10, purely because 2 fruits increase the increment by 10. eg; 1 plum + 1 valfruit = Blue +10.

Think I need to hold on to what it takes off, round that to the nearest 5 and see if collectively 1 more or less fruit would get closer to the final RGB values.

From watching the "Micro Feeding" thread it appears that there are just as many "course corrections" using that method and the 8th scale RGB's as there was when we were recommending based solely on the "Original" RGB's. Based on what I'm seeing as people post results I would not say, at this point, that it's more accurate as the side note on the FFXIV Chocobo website says.

I do believe that the discrepancies some users are experiencing to get some colours from posted feeding recommendations (on either RGB scale) is due to an internal RGB dye range (this was also mentioned in the micro feeding thread) and that I don't think everyone is at the exact same internal RGB value which adds an "rng" element to calculations for either RGB scale, hence I usually add "mileage may vary" to any feed recommendations I post.

Thanks for putting in the option to select from both. If I do any Feed Suggestions in the future it's handy to be able to double check my manual math against both scales quickly. It appears that regardless of using "Original" or "8th Scale" RGB's (when using +/-5) that a great majority of the fruit recommendations do end up almost identical to each other; I've even done a few simple manual dye calculations and checked against both calculator options and noticed the same thing.

I do believe that the discrepancies some users are experiencing to get some colours from posted feeding recommendations (on either RGB scale) is due to an internal RGB dye range (this was also mentioned in the micro feeding thread) and that I don't think everyone is at the exact same internal RGB value which adds an "rng" element to calculations for either RGB scale, hence I usually add "mileage may vary" to any feed recommendations I post.

IMHO, which RGB value we use, doesn't really matter too much, since all the methods uses the same +/- 5 factor. So there shouldn't really be too much difference other then 1 or 2 fruits.

But what is more interesting is this "range" business. As I said in micofeeding, everyone has been so busy and focused on getting to the color they want, there has not been any tracking/data logging of the range a given color has based on the fruits people have fed their birds. Since I stop paying attention to the the R&D thread after post 700th or so, there must be some kind of pattern if one exists.

I believe from the microfeeding method, we finally are starting to see that single feeding of the right fruits in the right pattern can nail the color on the spot starting from Desert Yellow, more importantly, allows the feeding to be duplicated. If we find this is true as more people applies the method, we can then move on to this "range" business, and start to include that into coloring factors when we jump from one color to the next. But I think this range is going to be a long project, especially if SE doesn't have a fixed range for all the colors (more RNG? LMAO).

You're right about the different RGB scales, the key is that we're using -/+ 5, and the difference in fruit is very minor for the majority. As mentioned it's really going to come down to personal preference as both scales have shown that course correction can be required.

Myself, Ravenguard, and a few others who were assisting player's early on in the Chocobo Dye thread noticed the " dye range"; I'm 98.5% sure it exists. It's evident in the fact that multiple players can start at the same colour (assuming all are attempting to get the same desired colour), feed the same fruits (in the same quantities/order etc.) and end up at different colours. It's also apparent when you see multiple players feed multiples of the same type of fruit but get their "feather's growing" message on different fruits (i.e. player 1 gets "feather's" message after x1 berry, player 2 gets "feather's" message after x3 berry, etc.) I'd also say this is evident in watching the players in the dark colour range feed the same fruits and dance around Soot Black. It makes me wonder if the darker dye ranges have a tighter dye range window.

Without knowing exact RGB values I doubt we'll ever truly be able to pinpoint down each dye range. Another consideration is that we can't even be sure if it takes all 3 of the RGB values to trigger a dye range or just 2 which is why we usually recommend a combo of fruits to adjust all 3 RGB values. Yay for more RNG in the math! >_<

Due to this I very much doubt that any Feed Suggestion will be able to be duplicated consistently across all players. There will be players who will try a suggestion that worked for someone else (assuming start/desired colour are the same) and it won't work for them.

Regarding "Micro Feeding", as I showed in my manual math in a previous post, whether you combine the fruits or not shouldn't really be an issue, the end RGB from all the fruits should equal the same number regardless of how it might be skipping around the dye ranges behind the scenes. With individuals stuck in colour loops, which again I think could potentially be just crappy dye range RNG, Micro Feeding might assist in breaking that loop. We were always recommending users who were stuck in the loop, or close to their desired colour range and trying to prevent a loop, to try small quantities of a single fruit type to try to avoid overshooting.

I'm curious, does anyone know where the RGB values for the FFXIV Chocobo Colors spreadsheet have come from?

I've just done a few tests using a colour dropper on some screen shots of the dye pallete and I'm getting different values.

eg; Woad Blue is stated as 41,50,74, but im getting it as 47,56,81. Any idea why this is?

I highly doubt the range is random. Possible, yes, but it's sort of a silly way to build it so I'm going to go out on a limb and say this isn't what they're doing unless we find some strong evidence to the contrary.

There's probably a single algorithm that converts from RGB > dye. The ranges would be dictated by that algorithm (whatever it may be).

And IME, I can tell you any single pixel dropper will be wrong. Even with direct capture of the Dye UI, the game still does some form of color shading and this is especially noticeable with the lighter colors such as the pinks and the light blue/greens. Just zoom up to 500%+ and see for yourself.

Updated the RGB value to 4th rounding now, so all the values are 3, 7, 11, 15 ... I used GIMP which gave me the ability to take the average RGB of an area instead of a single point, so I changed the RGB based on a 7x7 area average. You can trash my old 8th scale from your calculator if you like.

Are we talking about the same thing here or am I missing something? All these squares have solid colours in the center for me. Even the coloured circle on the companion window is a solid colour with no shading and has the same rgb value.

Okay need help. I'll actually be checking back this time btw XD okay after a lottttttaaaa work I finally managed to get to Regal purple. Still tryna get to Midnight Blue cause it looks great and its close to Soot black. Problem is I cant figure out how to get to it. Supposedly plums will get me to royal blue than apples over to Abyss than berries to Midnight BUT plums and apples are opposites so I just get juggled between Regal and Royal @.@ what do I gotta do here

RGB Estimation: 95R, 42G, 71B

Desired Colour: Midnight Blue
RGB Estimation: 20R, 21G, 49B

Note: I used the "Original" RGB values with the +/-5 integer for my calculations.

You should see at least 1, if not more, "Feather's" messages by the time you're done.

Micro Feed Option
You can break the feeds down if you want. You can do them something like the below (mimicking the manual math order) or break it down further.

x8 Pear
x8 Berries
x4 Apple
x2 Pear
x1 Berries

FFXIV Calculator Reference: The calculator generated a feed suggestion very close to the above; it just had x1 more Berry (did the manual math then cross checked the calculator).

You can choose if you want to mass feed or micro feed based on the above but either combo should result in an end RGB of around 20R 27G 46B (assuming +/-5 average integer and using the "Original" RGB values) and should push you close, if not into, the Midnight Blue dye range; your mileage may vary.
