I Agree, just take that crap back out of the game and take the whole equipment durability thing with it, its just a poor attempt at a gil sink and craft encouragement.

So would you rather SP loss instead?
Personally, I would.
So tired of people saying "So stop dieing".
It's not really as simple as that. I solo my leves now, mostly because since update not many others care to bother with them and everyone is spamming the dungeons. Anyways, go out and try to solo these leves. Lots of these leves can range from very easy to very hard with just a one star difference and sometimes you just get stuck in a situation where there is no way out of it.
being a smart arse and telling people not to die is like telling people they should not take on any challenges and just try everything the easy way. I can do my leves on 1 star and get 50sp per kill and a very bad bonus. But I think everyone would agree that that is not very fun.
heck, I have to now go through hordes of aggro mobs just to gather or do a field craft leve. I could see having to be careful and watch myself, but its a bit crazy to have a truck load of aggressive mobs literally dumped right on top of gathering spots. Sometimes death just happens. It doesn't mean you are a bad player.
Raise now makes it so you don't incur durability loss... you only get this from return... have some patience and/or stop being so damn anti-social and ask someone for a raise (Outside your LS too)
So now someone is antisocial because they don't ask for a raise when they are out in the middle of nowhere soloing? Ya lets have everyone wait on you hand and foot and spend what little anima they have or walk for 45 minutes just to raise you. I also have more respect for my LS mates then to ask someone to waste their time and come raise me every time I die. Last 10 or so times I have died, I could have stayed dead there for hours and never seen another person, so its kind of hard to ask people outside of LS if I don't see anyone that can be asked.
It's still not the games fault you are dying tho. YOU the player keeps trying to do the leve on more stars than you can handle.
It's like saying its Gravity fault you keep jumping out of 3rd story window and keep breaking your bones. OMG wtf Gravity why do you keep hurting me.
I try to endeavour not to die just to not incure the death penalty, or at least have a friend nearby who can quickly come over and raise my arse off the floor. Else, I try to die in awkward places just to make people have a weird moment....

I think it's silly that you can get raised with no penalty (rebirth)
But if you return, you get double penalty (gear damage and weakness)
If they want to make return damage your gear, fine, but weakness on top?
Even with FFXI's originally brutal exp loss, weakness only applied to raise.
People seem to forget there is way too much gil in the game, repair is the only real money sink atm. Crafters are easy to find to repair your mats if you're not a cheap skate. Also be willing to carry dark matter for your gear - increase chance you'll find someone to repair it if you have it available. Lastly - please pay attention to how much dark matter costs and offer at least 1k above that - or any crafter will just laugh and not repair your gear.
I for one like this much better then sp loss, if you had to spend a day sping your lvl 50 because you lost most of that xp to Darkhold? Bah - leave those days back in FFXI.
The death penalty in this game is a major joke. So much so that I am finding it hard to keep from busting out laughing watching you all complain about it.
You know what? He's right.
You can get gear repaired to 100% willy-nilly by offering 6k and standing in front of the repair NPC for an hour.
We need harsher penalties.
I believe losing 10% of your stats permanently should suffice.
ya, god forbid anyone want to challenge themselves. And as I said, even on a doable difficulty, sometimes stuff just happens and you die. Who the heck is blaming the game? Just because I don't like what the penalty is doesn't mean I'm blaming anything. The penalty isn't much of a big deal to me, I just don't like it. Maybe I am just to old to think its fun to have to repair 11 pieces of gear at the same time.
Yo, you noticed no one liked your comment, harsher penalties? Yea ok. How about this, Lower the degrade rate to like 2-3 instead of 5-7 everytime. That right there cuts repair costs by half cause no one will be looking for repairs after 5-6 deaths.
With the introduction of this new 45 dungeon everyone and their mama is dying left n right trying to complete this dungeon. The idea some of you had was not wearing your good armor? lol ok wtf is wrong with you people. I can see it now evryone (and their mama too) having 2-3 sets of armor now lol wtfe
I think this is fine, in the future however, they should reduce the amount of durability loss for higher level items because i can imagine some grade 6 darkmatter costing like 10k a pop a 15k to put up repairs.
Here's my personal story - tried out the 45+ dungeon for a day and when I was finished all of my gear was at 0%. The next day I spent over seven hours waiting around in Uldah for all of my gear to get repaired. I offered appropriate dark matter or up to 5k for rewards, and shouted for assistance every 5-10 minutes or so.
Maybe it's just me, but going out and fighting to get back SP from an exp loss death penalty would have taken less time and been a hell of a lot more fun than wasting all my play time standing around in town. The repair NPC won't repair jewelry and was charging up to 30k per item, which is still far too much for a 75% repair.
Maybe the solution is to reduce or remove the penalty for special events like the instanced raids. I rarely die on normal content, but things like this that are meant to take you many tries to clear are just punishing with the current system unless you have every craft at a decent level. I know in certain FFXI events the exp loss penalty was waived.
I completely agree! I've been doing the 45 dungeon since it came out pretty much non~stop. I shudder to even think about how much I've shelled out for repairs @ 7-8 k each. I wont low ball the crafters, but trying to get someone to repair my stuff is a pain sometimes.
This is what is what like in XI. Most people here are XI vets, so now we have them telling us to go the f home because that's how you should play, get used to it. I didn't want to believe it in beta when people were saying XI players would ruin this game, but there we go.
It's great to see so many perspectives on the subject. Admittedly, it's not the worst thing in the world...but considering that Leves have been focused on being for solo play more or less, it seems that this durability penalty will be felt most significantly by the lowbie, by new players.
No option in the matter, return when getting attacked by an add, or by doing a leve against a mob family that youre not particularly strong against. The weakened status, and the time limit alone should be penalty enough imho....No one likes to fail leves when you only get 8 per 36 hours. And newbies wont be invited to many parties, and may not have begun crafting skills yet, not to mention by the time they notice their weapon is severely damaged, they cannot change class to do a repair even if they had the skill. Changing class is a penalty during Leve...maybe a repair NPC out at the lowbie Crystals?
There has to be a better happier mid point...between no penalty and penalizing the solo player with durability loss.
