Support Yoshi-P's efforts to bring XIV to as many platforms as possible. :)

I would jump ship to the Wii U in a heartbeat (PS3 player here). Although I don't have the lag/rendering issues most PS3 users do (SSD FTW!), it would be sweet to have use of the Wii U gamepad. Plus it would just look and play better.

I can imagine SE making good use of the touchscreen as well. Inventory management, extra hot bars, keyboard (obviously), full screen map and whatever else they could think of.

Make it happen SE.

The hardware is so similar that if we ignore any of the loopholes SE might have to jump through to release an MMORPG on the console, it should be a relatively easy feet that involves only a bare minimum of fine tuning.

That and Windows is still a Microsoft platform, and they use a lot of the kernel for X1, while I'm not positive, I would venture a guess that SE already has it up and running on the X1. I could see, based off the interview, and their talk regarding the 1st expansion, that Microsoft would hold off until the expansion is released to have it put together as one game. I hope that isn't the case.

From everything Yoshi-P has said, it looks like the ball is in MS's court.

I've been playing on PC with the X1 controller, and am loving it. Would love to take this into my living room as well.

Itd probably just be a waste of money. Doesnt Microsoft require you to pay both XBLGold and the sub to play? Then there is the whole server thing. Its really MS's fault and as much as Id like SE to have a bigger player pool, I also think the less support MS gets the better.

To be totally honest, I find myself not even supporting FFXIV on the PS3 or PS4. The reason being is it slows down development time on content as they try to get it to work on three platforms. We're not seeing what FFXIV is truly capable of because of console limitations. Adding more platforms such as the Xbox 1 or even WiiU is making that even worse. If these console manufacturers could make their consoles with better hardware, then we wouldn't have this issue.

I respect your opinion but I do feel the pros outweigh the cons. And besides 1.0 wasn't on any console and 2.0 is, and far surpasses what 1.0 could have ever been IMO. :)

I'm curious with the new Windows 10 info from the Microsoft's conference yesterday (1/21/2015) if that might have any impact on bringing FFXIV over to the Xbox One. If they are allowing for cross platform play to the PC, hopefully they will change their minds about having XIV on the system. That and that the XB1 will be running windows 10, so perhaps their will be a way we can just install the PC version directly. (that would be crazy if they let us do that)

Anyway, we haven't heard any new info about that, didn't know if there was an official position from the devs.

I love how PC people assume every PC out there is gaming worthy. A basic off the shelf PC is not going to play the game any better than a PS4. Each PC is only as superior as it's built.

That all depends on how the game is designed, where the client ends up just being a presentation layer, thus not requiring as many resources as people assume.

Even if it required more resources, the sales would make up for it in the long run to have the resources hired. With the new info, that XB1 is running Win 10, I wonder how easy it would be to have it on that platform, since they both are running Windows.

Bringing the game to more consoles = limitations, I'm not eager for another FFXI incident... u know how bad it was? let me tell you... they had to cap fishing at 15FPS for PC players because it wasn't fair on people using PS2 consoles... NO THANKS.

xbox one is fine, 360 is a huge NO. I think they should slowly flush out PS3 and keep the game PC/PS4/XONE only.

Except that SE doesn't work like this. How the game is designed isn't great in the long run (let's face it, they cut corners) and "presentation layer" doesn't actually mean much to SE. Using XI as the only other example, they made the game exactly the same across the board, with only the presentation differing with lowering the resolution. And by differing, I mean, you could turn it up to full definition or not. The difference ended up being, "How pixaltastic do I want this to look?" All in all though, it was the same look. Everyone had the same thing with an option to lower the resolution until they stopped lagging. They made the game to play on the lowest platform and didn't do away with support on it until a decade later.

On top of that issue, bugs that were platform related and were on Xbox (their least loved console) were never truly addressed. There are crash bugs to this day that make it so that Xbox players cannot do Besieged (a big battle in one of the cities).

In short, more consoles means more bugs that they decide can never be addressed.

Also, the issue that even Yoshi-P himself has said is that they are lacking in developers. This game made profit (a lot of it, in fact) and yet still SE has no plans to hire more dev. So hiring resources? Unlikely. If they want even more platforms (especially ones they themselves treat like garbage), they will use the devs they already have and work them even harder. Our content quality will go down and our functionality quality will go down.

The platforms they have are fine. Talk of the Wii-U sounds gimicky at best.

I understand where you are coming from, but you appear to be working with inside information. Otherwise the majority of your point is pure speculation.

Here are some facts:

1. FFXI was built on the PS2 framework, and later ported to PC. FFXIV was built for PC and because of that they have said it's much easier to port to other platforms. PS4 and XB1 are more PC then in any generation.

2. You are correct, SE might not hire anyone, but that is a business level decision. If there is a market, then their is an opportunity to make money, and in order to get a market it might cost money, the calculation is then, do we make enough money to justify any additional cost. I don't have those numbers or information.

3. You could be right, more consoles could mean more bugs, but your thought process after that isn't 100% all the time, and in all cases. Bugs like anything else get put into a backlog and assigned a sprint, so they might get pushed out for a while, but that is what it is.


Yoshi-P and the Dev team have stated that they use an agile development process which has allowed them to be successful and release really good content updates, all the while making an expansion to the game.

I don't know the answer to this, but what would be the different between the Windows version and the Xbox version in terms of development cost in your mind? Both are running windows, and while I have no idea if this is true, I'd bet that they have a working build internally.

All in all, this has always been an issue that Microsoft has blocked, and with them removing the Console to PC restriction I wonder if they are still pushing back on Yoshi-P and team. Who want to see this game brought to the platform. :)

Yeah, it may be easier to port but these are still different consoles capable of differing levels of graphics and backend processing. All those differences means developers have to spend specific time on such consoles rather than the game as a whole. More consoles just means more man hours behind the scenes that can be spent elsewhere.

This is a normal business model of operation, yeah, but as an example, SE had a huge demand for KH3 (actual console KH3) and sat on it for practically a decade. Knowing there is a market for it doesn't always mean SE will jump for it. Like most companies that don't actually produce a lot of games per year, they like to keep things tight, I imagine.

I've worked for a few different video game companies in the past and this is not how it worked at any of them. Testers test relevant content first and then go into standby (or become unemployed at the end of the project). On standby, they may or may not go into the forums for bugs. It all depends on what the enforced daily bug count requirement is and how desperate they are. The bigger the bug is, the more chance that it will be placed on their table and told to go fetch.

While I do not doubt that they must have a rigid schedule, this sounds more hype than anything else. It's probably safe to assume that they have a load of stuff to get done and they have to put in OT to do it. "Agile development process" is what you tell the press.

As a former tester at companies that did all platforms (including IOS), the development cost comes from how each console needs special attention. The QA testers have to be upped to be able to fully test each version on their console and the developers need to fix a bug that may not exist on any other version but one of them. This is extremely common btw. Once that bug is fixed, it has to go back into a build and then given to the testers who then have to redo the effort to see if the bug is present. If it is, then back to developers it goes. So the difference is that the more you add, the more that will be added.

All this being said, I would like this game on any console they want to put it on just that it may end up hurting the game's quality in the long run.

To be honest, cross-platform play is one of the biggest innovations I've seen in years, and a huge reason of why I'm a staunch supporter of FFXIV. I love the fact that I was able to play this character up on my crappy old PC, and when I got a PS4, I was able to jump right back into it, but with amazing graphics! And, should I ever get a super-nice gaming PC down the road, I'll be able to jump right back then, too!

As long as they don't have to create "separate servers", I'm all for them releasing on whatever platforms they like.

I think you and I are approaching this from two different real world perspectives. As someone who leads teams building multiple projects (Business application development, not game development) and you who has worked in the QA/Testing world (very important IMO) I can see and understand your point of view much better then before.

We both are making assumptions based off our real life experiences. I'm assuming that the amount of time to test an XB1 version wouldn't be so great as to delay content since like you said, QA/Testing is a whole team process. So, that is where cost would come in if that process had to be beefed up, and because it's not a revenue producing department, you could be very right that it might not be a area where they would put more people and make the overall testing process much slower.

I don't know how the office is run, so I also assume it's like my teams, where we have a backlog (bugs,user stories, tasks, etc...) that if a bug is found and reported and not break the world critical, it gets added and scheduled, sometimes scheduled months out before we can get to it. And that could continue to get pushed out as new things come into higher importance.

So assumptions aside, Yoshi-P wants to bring this game to more people via more systems, and locations, and I support him in that goal. I wish there was more I could do to help besides all the areas I'm trying. I don't think XB1 will have as big of a testing and development impact when compared to the PS3. And while we know Heavensward is coming to PS3, they have said that they would look at the player base to see if next expansion would go to that system. At that time, if not sooner, it would seem that having it on the XB1 would open up the game to even more players.

Personally I think it would make since to announce the game + expansion for the XB1 as one game, much like how XI launched on XB360 with Treasures (and other expansions packed in).

All the news we have had up to this point has been that Microsoft has been the issue with this game not coming to the platform, hopefully that is changing, or has changed. :)

This game could be so awesome on wii U game pad. Just imagine the Hud customization heaven combined with the ease of controller movement.

It's been a long while since I've posted anything on this topic, with an interview Phil Spencer gave to IGN about this topic back in September, he pretty much shot the idea of XIV coming to the XBOX anytime soon down, and shifted focus on their games collection coming this past Fall/Winter.

However, today they announced that Rocket League would allow for Cross Platform play right now with PC but with other platforms in the future. http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/14/112...play-announced

From his recent comments, this sounds like the last issue holding FFXIV back from the XB1 might finally be resolved.

Just thought I would share, crossing my fingers that we'll see this happen this year.

I would prefer them to put their effort into a glamour log than new platform.

To be fair, I can't see the game coming to Xbox One, as much as I'd love to see it (I have an Xbox One for universal Windows development purposes). Sony/Nintendo have a market towards RPGs. Xbox is essentially shooter or bust. Pretty much every single title on the Xbox One that isn't some indie attempt that fails is a shooter. It's all Xbox players want unfortunately. I doubt they'd get many more subs for bringing the game to the Xbox One. I'd say 50 more subs is being generous.

I read long ago that SE wanted to bring the game to XBOX, but Microsoft refuses to share servers with Play Station and wanted have their own servers for his version, and of course SE said no. I don't know if this is true or not. Internet is a nest of rumors everywhere...

Yep. It's not happening. How does SE define between Xbox One only and shared servers. You'd have to be able to migrate characters across between the 2 free of charge (or else it'll be a massive ripoff). We might as well rule out Xbox One at this point... :(

The issues preventing FFXIV happening on XBox are not simply the technical ones of networking or private vs.shared servers or MS Owned vs. 3rd Party servers. The Business model issues are a far greater hurdle.

Essentially it comes down to Sony not demanding to funnel the subs and MogStation Optional Item sales through the PS Store so they can take a cut of the revenue. Microsoft wants all revenue streams from Xbox products to flow through them, and they want a piece of the pie.

As for the interoperability, what Microsoft has done is open up the APIs used to enable PC/Xbox integration, and allow Xbox to see more than just XBL. There's nothing remarkable here and it will be implemented on a per game basis by developers if they deem it worth the effort.

I can see that working if someone has the Xbox version exclusively, but how would MS get their cake and eat it too if they're dealing with someone like me who has the Steam version?

Sorry, I wasn't very clear before. I was meaning how would MS get their cake and eat it too if it was released on Xbox One and I picked it up on X1 (I own the console, I'm a universal Windows developer in training), and then also played with the Steam version. I could just funnel my purchases through Steam/Mog Station correct? Then MS loses out.

They lose out because you're buying a second license for the game on an alternate platform. Yes, of course that would work since anything done with your sub and optional items impacts your account regardless of platform. Most gamers on console are unlikely to purchase a second license for a game in order to work around something like that, therefore MS would still see significant revenue flowing through XBL for FFXIV if FFXIV was on XBox.

How convenient that MS just announced they'll allow cross platform play with PSN.

Only if Devs implement it in their games, it's not a feature of XBL now or anything like that. It's done on a game by game basis and depends 100% on developers implementing it.

Technically, PS4 players of FFXIV would look like every other player of FFXIV to the Xbox One since the game servers are owned and run by SE. Before this change was announced, there was zero technical reason why a version of FFXIV implemented on Xbox One would be unable to handle cross platform play with PC, PS4 and Mac, because the game platform is SE's servers, so the client platform is irrelevant.

The reasons for FFXIV not being on Xbox One have very little to do with technical aspects of interoperation of games. Rocket League is a Peer-Peer game, so it's necessary for game clients to be able to communicate with other game clients regardless of platform. FFXIV is client server, so as long as a client can talk to the server, it can see everyone, regardless of their console or laptop/desktop computer.

If you look at a major online game such as a shooter. Currently the user populations of those games cannot talk to each other if they are on different consoles. When 360 ruled the roost in the US, this was not a problem because their userbase was very solid and had the critical mass to attract players from Playstation who wanted to play with their friends. Now the boot is on the other foot, MS is losing console users to PlayStation because it has critical mass ion the market.

Microsoft knows that the XBox One will be more viable if friends can play with friends, and keeping a closed network no longer serves their business need, now they need cross platform play to maintain sales and userbase.

Openly allowing cross platform play let's Microsoft claim that they are now open when in fact it's not a technology issue, it's always been a business issue.

FFXI & FFXIV are both clear demonstrations that there is no technological issue, and never has been.

This announcement changes nothing, that was the point I was making. Whether you understand that or not, is not my issue. You apparently are not aware of, or do not understand the issues behind SE not putting FFXIV on Xbox One, which have very little to do with technical issues of cross platform play.

Not sure why you think I'm upset at the announcement, I just feel that it's being overblown because it's nothing new, and has been possible since Xbox and PS2. If anything I'd like to have seen an Xbox One version of FFXIV, it would mean more players, and more players is always a good thing.
