Possible locations for a new MMO:
Xenogear
Chronotrigger
VII (either pre/post/during Avalanche's time frame all could work and be pretty fun)
VIII (same thing as above)
Kingdom Hearts
Dragon Quest
Final Fantasy XV or XVI or XVII
I would've said Star Ocean but, SE publishes that game and Tri-Ace is the developer so I don't think this one is a possibility.
It's probably FFXIV-2 with sailor moon outfit transformation animations and 100% more hot pants. I can't wait to girlie-run around LL!
I'm not happy at all SE making new mmo, more mmo's not always mean better 4 them ;D, I understand they need money so if this help their finances = better 4 FFXIV in the future I guess. I hope it's nothing to big and won't compete with FFXIV, just my 2 cents.
If it was developed by Level 5 and had the same appeal as True Fantasy Live Online, I would be so happy, either that or the look and feel of the Dragon Ball MMO.

To be fair, it was only a couple years after Xi's release when they started working on XIV (codename Rapture), as that teaser video was released in 05 if my memory serves me correctly.
Either way, what I am curious about is if they continue this trend then once the next MMO comes out a year later they will begin yet another MMO, since they stated they want only 3 MMOs up at a time due to manpower then is that the final days of FFXI?
Finally, I personally would love an MMO set in a more futuristic setting, or a steam punk one.
Secret of Mana Online!! Maybe?!
Well, the idea of SofM is very good to be translated to MMORPG.
You got lots of jobs to choose with, lots of crystal power to collect with, the play style and play experience is probabaly competitable directly to Diablo series.
SE has lots of game concept and models already from SOfM 1-4, espeically most of player will play it even it's in "cartoon style"
Therefore easy for SE to make the game, Easy for pc/console to run the game, Easy for player(Age10~30)to play the game,
OHOH, why not?!
Well, not quite. What they actually said was that they would at least like to see XI last as long as its number, which would be 11 years. That and at this point it would be an absolutely stupid move for them to shutdown XI as it has moved into a pretty lax development cycle and the monthly fees they obtain from end up being almost entirely all profit. The game *only* makes money for them at this point, and to be honest, when Yoshi-P talks about how FFXIV doesn't have to worry about where they get their finances from, I'm almost positive that this is because it seems most likely that all of FFXI's profit is being put into FFXIV development. Of the two, XI is by a long shot the more commerically successful product especially since its development cost was paid for years ago. That and, people who play XI really do love the game, and if SE tried to make some attempt to shut it down to push us onto their next games, there would be so many subscription fees cancelled that I can't imagine any of their games really staying afloat.
With regards to the ps2 issue, people have sung for *years* about how the end of XI is nigh, and it hasn't come. If anything, Abyssea has completely rejuvenated interest in the game, with a lot of players coming back and rerolling, as well as some new faces. I don't think they'd be all that thrilled if the game they invested so much time in suddenly turned off.
But yeah, I am slightly irked at Wada's wording saying that they plan to simultaneously operate two to three MMOs. They are doing Wakfu, XI, and XIV at the moment, with Wakfu still in beta... but if they take any of my numbered FF games off the market I'm not coming back to their MMO service lol. That and, like its been mentioned before, XIV really needs their undivided attention right now... things are starting to look good for the game, really good, and this is the first time I've been optimistic for it, but its going to take a big financial effort and push to turn back the scathing reviews and image the game has now.
Please please SE!!! Do not touch Xenogears or Ivalice with your MMO Mediocrity!!!
Please let it be a Front mission game, or a parasite eve, or DQ(God knows that series needs to do something different)
But for the god of all thats holy, do not make a xenogears or ivalice MMO, just go leave them be, dont destroy them >.<
Personally, I'd love an MMORPG based in Ivalice, it's very doable, and could do very well if done right., especially given the history of Ivalice and the multiple race.
Depending on how they want to approach this, there's room for a lot of conflict, especially conflict with the church, lion war conflict, etc. There's plenty of possibilities to do this as an MMORPG.
This seems pretty presumptuous of them.
They want three online games at once. Either way they will only ever have two.
FFXI and either FFXIV if they invest more development into it or this new MMO if they continue to leave FFXIV undedeveloped.
Well they just said that following the completion of the current roadmap for XI 2011-12, they would like to look into designing some new zones for the game, and there's even concept art they released in that same announcement that showed new areas...
So I dunno, apparently they are finding a way to work around it. They were able to fix the PS2 hard drive issue that you were referring to. The game has been bloated for years and there really isn't 40GB of content there, there is a lot of space to be retrieved by simply handling things more efficiently.
I would love to see a Ivalice MMO if done correctly of course. The world fits being a MMO to a T. I mean clans are already there(no need to make up something like linkshells) there are more races then most MMO's out there, it's based on a job system(and hell the license board from FFXII could be used for leveling if they tweaked it well enough). I mean really it would make a nearly perfect MMO for a team who knew what they were doing(give it to the FFXII team and tell them to make FFXII but online and BOOM) I doubt that's what the new MMO is(or if the new MMO is even of a scale comparable to FFXI and FFXIV cause if so it would have had to been in development for awhile and we would have already heard about it and if it's not coming out for a REALLY long time they would not have bothered saying anything about it)
I wonder when they are gonna announce it. Would be awesome if it was at E3 but who knows I doubt it.
I would never touch an Ivalice MMO, in my opinion it has some of the worst looking "races" out there. Bunny girls are meh, lizard dudes, and dogs who look like they have had multiple strokes.
Thats all my opinion of course, I'm sure there would be some hardcore Viera fanboys waiting to get there hands on a playable one. They totally need another fanservice female only race floating around so there could be massive faction wars between Mithra and Viera fanboys.
I'm just the opposite. I love the races in the Ivalice Universe.
I would buy an MMO based on the Ivalice Universe without a second thought. Though, I wouldn't be playing a Viera. Those Bangaa (lizard guys as you call them) would be my race of choice. I do like those Bangaa.
Is it doable ? Yes! Would it be the best course of action for that specific series ? Nope! SE track record is horrible when it comes to delivering sequels or games that are related to one another, now to be fair it might not be SE fault but more of a fault with Matsuno(Wish i doubt since his ogre battle series is pretty tight)
I mean how do you go from Final Fantasy the godly classic Tactics, then to Vagrant the awesome story, to Final fantasy tactics advance.... and then to AD2.... then you go up to FFXII(Awesome game, IMO one of the most complete FF tittles if not the most) and then you go to FFXII reverent wings or w/e it was called.....
Come on SE, you had a classic series born out of Tactics, you could have done a prequel with the 50yr war, and had us switch between balbanes and T.G Cid, but NO! You had us play a kiddie game in Tactics Advance <.< then you gave us vagrant story, awesome game, to then have us play another kiddie game <.<, to then give us FFXII.... and wtf happened there anyways lol
The really funny part is, if they hit the ball out of the park with this new MMO they will destroy the playerbases for XI and especially XIV. One of the biggest things Square have going for them is SE fans, they won't play 3 MMO's.
They have the business sense of a small dead newt. No matter what happens with this new MMO it's going to ravage the others.
It's funny how some of you saying there new mmo going to fail due to FFXIV failing and if Tanaka is leader of the team you wont play it. Is it me or is a company not in title for a bad release of a game? there only human and Tanaka just took the blame for the Company there no need to blame him for the stockholder/CEO for wanting the game to be release in 2010. If this game was release in Q3 of 2011 and had a beta sense Q2 of 2010 this game would have been better. But guess what? the game is pretty much is in Beta.
Why is everyone assuming the MMO would come from the old squaresoft based games? There are old Enix and Eidos series out there that are untouched. Clearly Dragon Quest makes the best choice... but why would SE Want 3 high fantasy Major MMO? Star Ocean makes much more sense to me. Also Final Fantasy Tactics/Vagrant Story Ivalice > FFTA, FFTA2, and that so called Final Fantasy game number 12's Ivalice.
Their track record so far has been horrible. FF11 was in a similar state as 14 and it took them about a year to fix it. They just had the luxury of being one of the few MMO's out there so were able to recover. FF14 is up in the air whether the playerbase will forgive that again or not. Whether its the dev's or suits fault regardless there's a failure somewhere when someone can't realize the game isn't ready.
FF11 did not even come out in NA so does not even matter if it was horrible Japan was testing it.
I think one of the interview one of them said the game not ready and we need more time but i think CEO just did not listen to there request i think the CEO is what making SE have such a bad track record that and and when einix join Square.
I think you missed his point. FF11 could afford the mistakes in their first year because it was one of the few MMORPGs available to play. Right now, FFXIV cannot afford to be in the state it is in much longer, and SE decided to take up a new MMORPG in order to make more profit off of that, perhaps using a different title than Final Fantasy because of the reputation the FF games have been given recently.
FFXIV has more competition right now as FFXI didn't, that's what he meant.
No one has mentioned this one, but what about a Grandia game? A Grandia MMO that has the same principles and combat mechanics as the other Grandia games! Being able to fuse abilities together with your teammates would be pretty awesome if done correctly (not like Battle Regimes)
Grandia, Star Ocean, even Dragon Quest have low potentials for MMO concepts. They're not popular enough in NA and Europe.
I honestly wouldn't give a **** about a grandia or star ocean MMO, and DQ doesn't fit the massively multiplayer genre well.
Mana is about the only flagship series that is truly amenable to MMO style, and it actually has a reputation that'll sell it.
Mana is a perfect model for a light, animated action-oriented microtransaction MMO, one that would make Square a lot of money.
Romancing Saga as well.
