Never played that game. How did they handle it?

People have been asking for that too, it just seems to fall by the wayside a lot compared to other stuff people want.
Personally if I could have an apartment with an inside the size of a medium or large, and have an indoor garden that I can actually use to crossbreed, I'd be set. I like the look of some of the housing areas, the views are nice and I do want a yard I can decorate, but like... not needing to roll the dice to get a house in the location I want and not needing to worry about auto demolition sounds a lot nicer to me.
You could buy a deed for a certain plot of land. It could be small, medium, large, extra large let's say... Then you would go around the world and find an empty spot but it had to be far enough away from the city and the portals and of course couldn't overlap with trees, dungeons etc... So let's say you do find a spot, you can claim your lot. Then you would either hire people who were carpenters or you would do it yourself and build your house by gathering wood, turning them into usable lumber etc... The life skill jobs were incredible in that game. But, the odd of you finding an empty plot of land was very low. Here's the kicker... It was an open world PvP and you had the good world and the bad world. The bad world was like an outlaw world for red players but they could go to the good world (law abiding) and grief people which was so common that you were likely to die if you set foot out of town. BUT it was a full-drop loot PvP. Meaning 100% of what you had on you could be looted. Say you see someone die, you could loot their corpse too! There was karma but still... A small price to pay for end-game gear. Anyway -- Once you do loot someone's corpse, you could also loot their deed. In act, you could also break into people's houses as I remember. It was very, very hardcore like that. This was the norm in MMORPGs until WoW came out. In contrast, it was super casual and almost nobody from other MMOs would want to play WoW due to how it held people's hands so much. But WoW did do the MMO industry a favor by introducing the game to people who normally would never play MMOs and also made it more casual. I don't miss worrying if I'm going to lose all my loot stepping outside of town or losing my house.
Dang, that IS pretty hardcore. Glad we left those grindy mmo style ages ago. I can understand being a pvp server u could drop ur loot but ur deed? thats a bit harsh.
Oh, I never said I didn't own a house. I do own my own house but I recognize the system is just bad as it is. Im glad you agree though =3
I wonder if Island Sanctuary are the compromise to the desire, it will obviously not satiate everyone and people shouldn't sell it as instanced housing to others*, but it may please the sense of home base and can potentially have far more interesting progression mechanics than the current housing system (which may endear the system more to some people). I really hope the island system is going to be a good content. . . *I know there was a tweet that basically said it is instanced housing, but as far as I can tell that was a misunderstanding that was never clarified later.
As for the general desire, *pulls out ancient necromantic horse drum sealed with the finest salts*, BANG BANG BANG. Yes please of course. There are a million reasons why I think instanced housing systems can, and are, much better than wards.. and very few, very limited, reasons why I think wards are interesting. For example I do actually believe the FC only wards might be interesting, but as FFXIV has already said themselves they didn't expect so many wanted houses.. Which to me means that maybe there should have been a system just for FC and then a system just for players. There is a lot of history in this issue and so I don't say it like "wow SE no brain, brrrrrrr goes the wheels". Initially the game wasn't as nearly as popular as it was now, and they added FC housing, but players really wanted to have them too so they opened that up. Given the price and not as many players the system, and most servers, was 'fine'. But as the prices dropped because the barrier to entry was quite high, and as more players joined the game, it became obvious the system was non-sustainable (I mean when the system was first added I was already saying that, many, many, years ago.. but at least there are a series of logical steps that got us to that moment).
Also on the point of Yoshida's preference from what I know he was a huge fan Dark Age of Camelot which had pretty much exactly the same housing system as we have here, so I imagine some influence on his preference is coming from that. Though I still strongly believe that an instanced system would have been a far superiors option for the game and the general audience that it sustains, and that perhaps FC could have had a different system if they wanted to create a nice community feeling as was definitely the original desire of the system (it's just not sustainable/realistic for single player housing while also coming with a lot of cons, imo). Such system in and of themselves could also be considered instanced solutions too, like Wildstar did have community (5 plot) systems where you could create huge cities in effect.
Would have been so cool if we could have had our house in the city, or in the Azim Steppe, the water temple, Amarout, etc... If we had the ability to use the place objects where and how you want and what scale you want... man.. the creativity would have been insane. Already people are pretty good with the system (though some are using a third party tool to get around the limitations of the default system, which to me just means SE should consider removing those (collision based restrictions)).
Yes, I'd love apartments of different sizes
