Welp. As someone who wears the crown, I try to help whenever I can. My knowledge of things stop at Savage, Extreme, and high-level crafting content, so for that, I just refer people to someone more qualified to answer their questions.
Mentors are players just like anyone else. When the Ex party goes in there clueless, gets the mechanics fed to them patiently, and they still refuse to abide by it because the sprouts wanted a frigging carry (this has happened too many times to count, mostly in Ramuh ex), no, Mentors don't owe anyone anything special. We don't pay our subs so we can do a thankless job.
Yes, if we wear the Mentor crown (which we have to when queueing for the roulette) we should be at least so helpful. But we're not saints, we're not expected to be saints, and we're certainly not getting paid to display the kind of attitude and responsibility people here expect us to.
Also, "content as intended" - some might argue extreme primals are PF material. So you know, that's a debate in and of itself and occasionally you'll see the thread pop up on the forums asking for that content to be removed from the mentor roulette. Only times I saw that sort of content be cleared was:
1. Odin, after numerous wipes
2. Ultima
3. 6+ mentors in the party carrying the remaining sprouts to victory - which is also not "content as intended"
I usually don't wear the Mentor Crown because I still feel like a noob in some content. But I do give out tips whenever I can, whether or not I'm wearing the crown. And Novice Network just seems like a Mentor-only chat since sprouts don't really chat in Novice Network so I've sort of stopped using NN. In the end, Mentors are just players, but with more experience under their belt than brand new players.
A mentor shouldn't be willing to learn. He should be willing to mentor less experienced players and to do so, he should have some solid knowledge of the game. However, given how easy it is to become a mentor, many mentors are not competent enough to offer useful advice to sprouts.
Not a single one of the requirements to become a mentor has anything to do with skill or knowledge of the game. As of now, the mentor system is only a way to let people wear a shiny crown and to fill queues faster, placing a big fat carrot (the only 2-seater obtainable by playing the game) at the end of an excruciatingly time consuming grind (2k mentor roulettes)
To the OP: don't bother with the mentor system. If you feel like you can help a player, by all means do so. But realize that the mentor status means absolutely nothing.
You didn't read any other page in this post did you? We aren't talking about the Mentor roulettes, are are talking about the mentor system as a whole.
Yeah, my posts haven't been adding anything to the discussion.
In what way was the Mentor System designed to be a "glorified queue filler" when the mentor roulettes (which was not even mentioned about at all in the original post) came much later than the Mentor System itself and Novice Network?
