I would like to point out that this argument is a generalization and is probably wrong for most dpsers. I'm willing to bet it is NOT why most people play dps. I personally like to play dps because I don't know ALL the fights in ALL the dungeons/trials/raids/whatever to confidently roll up into the fight with people that DO know them.

but there's big diff between botanical scythe and combat/war scythe. like there's a difference between PLD weps and NIN weps, even though many of them are same size.

Yeah the big difference is that combat/war scythe doesn't exist. And the few "examples" don't look like a grim reaper scythe...it looks like a curved bladed spear.

What if they made Red Mage play like Black Mage...you use up all your magic then use melee auto attacks to fill your mana bar back up. OR it could be a healer that does the same thing. Off heals of course...to fit the whole "I'm 90% DPS 10% emergency healer" thing SCH have going on or whatever.

That would be cool yes?

You just said you don't play tank because you don't want to make a mistake and get blamed.

Yeah. A lot of people who mainly play DPS overall have little to no responsibility compared to Tanks and Healers.

Which is why the devs are possibly considering the negative effects to the DF if SAM is a dps instead of a tank.

It can easily be stated the possible effect of your Tank population leaving to level a DPS class would also be a negative. You only need to recall the roving NIN F.A.T.E parties scouring the maps as to what happens when a DPS job is front and center of a content patch. The DF ques don't lie, there were a sever shortage of tanks then...

One thing I want to add to the argument about the whole "it won't make more people" tank issue. That's not necessarily true, one thing to keep in mind that as new classes are added, some people might actually make the switch if they really like the gameplay. It's an anecdotal example true enough but I'll share anyway, a good friend of mine never liked tanking, we played WoW together for years, but once the Death Knight was released he fell in love with the class and really got in to tanking on it. Then as he played the class more he developed a real love for tanking as a result, had that class not been added, he would have never made the switch.

I'd say there's no way to know for sure, if they do add Samurai and it's a tank, there may be folks that try it out anyway and they could end up liking the gameplay or playstyle so much that they make the switch. Is it guaranteed? No, but it's not impossible either.

Even with the argument that we absolutely and desperately need more tanks to make queues easier for DPS and assuming that it is an absolute necessity to do this,
I still think that Samurai as tank is a bad choice, even if it's popular. As i said, i don't doubt that some people will switch to tank full time on the long run, I don't think it will be a significant amount.

Rather than that, I still think the idea i mentioned of a Runefencer / Red Mage type of tank to be way more efficient for this purpose. I know it might sound weird when i bring up Red Mage for this,
but at least in my opinion the concept of a magical tank that works with putting up barriers to mitigate damage, in a similar fashion as to the Scholar's Adloquium shields sounds really interesting.
These wouldn't necessarily be cooldowns, but abilities that can be triggered upon weaponskill execution, since they are jack of all trades, after all. Offensive abilities could also be an alternative instead of defensive shields.

The reason i think this path to be way more efficient is because it would bring something entirely new to the tanking lineup, something that would also be interesting for people interested in caster-type gameplay.
We already have 3 melee tanks that are only capable of attacking with physical attacks.
All pretty much all of them rely on block / parry procs besides defensive cooldowns, War is most interesting even in my opinion with Inner Beast being a form of mitigation that doesn't rely on a cooldown really.

Adding such a tank that relies on magic for defense and offense would contribute more to adding more career tanks in the long run in my opinion.

The idea of a RDM/RUN tank just doesn't sound entirely new to be honest. Those classes use swords and magic, yeah, but so do PLD and DRK. If we look at the big picture and assume that SE doesn't intend leave them where they're at, we can assume that they'll continue to get refinement into their FF-stereotypes.

I think a dual-katana wielding SAM brings much more variety to tanking classes.
